Microbial fuel cell (MFC) research is a rapidly evolving field that lacks established terminology and methods for the analysis of system performance. This makes it difficult for researchers to compare devices on an equivalent basis. The construction and analysis of MFCs requires knowledge of different scientific and engineering fields, ranging from microbiology and electrochemistry to materials and environmental engineering. DescribingMFCsystems therefore involves an understanding of these different scientific and engineering principles. In this paper, we provide a review of the different materials and methods used to construct MFCs, techniques used to analyze system performance, and recommendations on what information to include in MFC studies and the most useful ways to present results.

This research employs econometric analysis on a cross section of American electricity companies in order to study the cost implications associated with unbundling the operations of integrated companies into vertically and/or horizontally separated companies. Focusing on the representative sample average firm, we find that complete horizontal and vertical disintegration resulting in the creation of separate nuclear, conventional, and hydro electric generation companies as well as a separate firm distributing power to final consumers, results in a statistically significant 13.5 percent increase in costs. Maintaining a horizontally integrated generator producing nuclear, conventional, and hydro electric generation while imposing vertical separation by creating a stand alone distribution company, results in a lower but still substantial and statistically significant cost penalty amounting to an 8.1 % increase in costs relative to a fully integrated structure. As these results imply that a vertically separated but horizontally integrated generation firm would need to reduce the costs of generation by 11% just to recoup the cost increases associated with vertical separation, even the costs associated with just vertical unbundling are quite substantial. Our paper is also the first academic paper we are aware of that systematically considers the impact of generation mix on vertical, horizontal, and overall scope economies. As a result, we are able to demonstrate that the estimated cost of unbundling in the electricity sector is substantially influenced by generation mix. Thus, for example, we find evidence of strong vertical integration economies between nuclear and conventional generation, but little evidence for vertical integration benefits between hydro generation and the distribution of power. In contrast, we find strong evidence suggesting the presence of substantial horizontal integration economies associated with the joint production of hydro generation with nuclear and/or conventional fossil fuel generation. These results are significant because they indicate that the cost of unbundling the electricity sector will differ substantially in different systems, meaning that a blanket regulatory policy with regard to the appropriateness of vertical and horizontal unbundling is likely to be inappropriate.

The Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is a class of fuel cells that is capable of generating very high levels of power at high temperatures. SOFCs are used for stationary power generation and as Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems. In spite of all the beneficial features of the SOFC, the propagation of ripple currents, due to nonlinear loads, is a challenging problem, as it interferes with the physical operation of the fuel cell. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the cause of ripples and attempt to eliminate or reduce the ripple propagation through the use of Active Power Filters (APF). To this end, a systematic approach to modeling the fuel cell to account for its nonlinear behavior in the presence of current ripples is presented. A model of a small fuel cell power system which consists of a fuel cell, a DC-DC converter, a single-phase inverter and a nonlinear load is developed in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The extent of ripple propagation, due to variations in load magnitude and frequency, are identified using frequency spectrum analysis. In order to reduce the effects of ripple propagation, an APF is modeled to remove ripples from the DC fuel cell current. The emphasis of this thesis is based on the idea that small fuel cell systems cannot implement large passive filters to cancel the effects of ripple propagation and hence, the compact APF topology effectively protects the fuel cell from propagating ripples and improves its electrical performance.

Wind generation in highly interconnected power networks creates local and centralised stability issues based on their proximity to conventional synchronous generators and load centres. This paper examines the large disturbance stability issues (i.e. rotor angle and voltage stability) in power networks with geographically distributed wind resources in the context of a number of dispatch scenarios based on profiles of historical wind generation for a real power network. Stability issues have been analysed using novel stability indices developed from dynamic characteristics of wind generation. The results of this study show that localised stability issues worsen when significant penetration of both conventional and wind generation is present due to their non-complementary characteristics. In contrast, network stability improves when either high penetration of wind and synchronous generation is present in the network. Therefore, network regions can be clustered into two distinct stability groups (i.e. superior stability and inferior stability regions). Network stability improves when a voltage control strategy is implemented at wind farms, however both stability clusters remain unchanged irrespective of change in the control strategy. Moreover, this study has shown that the enhanced fault ride-through (FRT) strategy for wind farms can improve both voltage and rotor angle stability locally, but only a marginal improvement is evident in neighbouring regions.

A Three-Phase Nine-Switch Converter (NSC) topology for Doubly Fed Induction Generator in wind energy generation is proposed in this paper. This converter topology was used in various applications such as Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Uninterruptable Power Supplies. In this paper, Nine-Switch Converter is introduced in Doubly Fed Induction Generator in renewable energy application for the first time. It replaces the conventional Back-to-Back Pulse Width Modulated voltage source converter (VSC) which composed of twelve switches in many DFIG applications. Reduction in number of switches is the most beneficial in terms of cost and power switching losses. The operation principle of Nine-Switch Converter using SPWM method is discussed. The resulting NSC performance of rotor side current control, active power and reactive control are compared with Back-to Back voltage source converter performance. DC link voltage regulation using front end converter is also presented. Finally the simulation results of DFIG performances using NSC and Back-to-Back VSC are analyzed and compared.

In developing countries high rate of growth in demand of electric energy is felt, and so the addition of new generating units becomes necessary. In deregulated power systems private generating stations are encouraged to add new generations. Finding the appropriate location of new generator to be installed can be obtained by running repeated power flows, carrying system studies like analyzing the voltage profile, voltage stability, loss analysis etc. In this paper a new methodology is proposed which will mainly consider the existing network topology into account. A concept of T-index is introduced in this paper, which considers the electrical distances between generator and load nodes. This index is used for ranking significant new generation expansion locations and also indicates the amount of permissible generations that can be installed at these new locations. This concept facilitates for the medium and long term planning of power generation expansions within the available transmission corridors. Studies carried out on a sample 7-bus system, EHV equivalent 24-bus system and IEEE 39 bus system are presented for illustration purpose.

An isolated wind power generation scheme using slip ring induction machine (SRIM) is proposed. The proposed scheme maintains constant load voltage and frequency irrespective of the wind speed or load variation. The power circuit consists of two back-to-back connected inverters with a common dc link, where one inverter is directly connected to the rotor side of SRIM and the other inverter is connected to the stator side of the SRIM through LC filter. Developing a negative sequence compensation method to ensure that, even under the presence of unbalanced load, the generator experiences almost balanced three-phase current and most of the unbalanced current is directed through the stator side converter is the focus here. The SRIM controller varies the speed of the generator with variation in the wind speed to extract maximum power. The difference of the generated power and the load power is either stored in or extracted from a battery bank, which is interfaced to the common dc link through a multiphase bidirectional fly-back dc-dc converter. The SRIM control scheme, maximum power point extraction algorithm and the fly-back converter topology are incorporated from available literature. The proposed scheme is both simulated and experimentally verified.

The amount of reactive power margin available in a system determines its proximity to voltage instability under normal and emergency conditions. More the reactive power margin, better is the systems security and vice-versa. A hypothetical way of improving the reactive margin of a synchronous generator is to reduce the real power generation within its mega volt-ampere (MVA) ratings. This real power generation reduction will affect its power contract agreements entered in the electricity market. Owing to this, the benefit that the generator foregoes will have to be compensated by paying them some lost opportunity cost. The objective of this study is three fold. Firstly, the reactive power margins of the generators are evaluated. Secondly, they are improved using a reactive power optimization technique and optimally placed unified power flow controllers. Thirdly, the reactive power capacity exchanges along the tie-lines are evaluated under base case and improved conditions. A detailed analysis of all the reactive power sources and sinks scattered throughout the network is carried out in the study. Studies are carried out on a real life, three zone, 72-bus equivalent Indian southern grid considering normal and contingency conditions with base case operating point and optimised results presented.

The paper explores the biomass based power generation potential of Africa. Access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is about 26% and falls to less than 1% in the rural areas. On the basis of the agricultural and forest produce of this region, the residues generated after processing are estimated for all the countries. The paper also addresses the use of gasification technology - an efficient thermo-chemical process for distributed power generation - either to replace fossil fuel in an existing diesel engine based power generation system or to generate electricity using a gas engine. This approach enables the implementation of electrification programs in the rural sector and gives access to grid quality power. This study estimates power generation potential at about 5000 MW and 10,000 MW by using 30% of residues generated during agro processing and 10% of forest residues from the wood processing industry, respectively. A power generation potential of 15000 MW could generate 100 terawatt-hours (TWh), about 15% of current generation in SSA. The paper also summarizes some of the experience in using the biomass gasification technology for power generation in Africa and India. The paper also highlights the techno economics and key barriers to promotion of biomass energy in sub-Saharan Africa. (C) 2011 International Energy Initiative. Published by Elsevier Inc. The paper reports the operational experience from a 100 kWe gasification power plant connected to the grid in Karnataka. Biomass Energy for Rural India (BERI) is a program that implemented gasification based power generation with an installed capacity of 0.88 MWe distributed over three locations to meet the electrical energy needs in the district of Tumkur. The operation of one 100 kWe power plant was found unsatisfactory and not meeting the designed performance. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the technology developer, took the initiative to ensure the system operation, capacity building and prove the designed performance. The power plant connected to the grid consists of the IISc gasification system which includes reactor, cooling, cleaning system, fuel drier and water treatment system to meet the producer gas quality for an engine. The producer gas is used as a fuel in Cummins India Limited, GTA 855 G model, turbo charged engine and the power output is connected to the grid. The system has operated for over 1000 continuous hours, with only about 70 h of grid outages. The total biomass consumption for 1035 h of operation was 111 t at an average of 107 kg/h. Total energy generated was 80.6 MWh reducing over loot of CO(2) emissions. The overall specific fuel consumption was about 1.36 kg/kWh, amounting to an overall efficiency from biomass to electricity of about 18%. The present operations indicate that a maintenance schedule for the plant can be at the end of 1000 h. The results for another 1000 h of operation by the local team are also presented. Electrochemical oxidation of sodium borohydride (NaBH(4)) and ammonia borane (NH(3)BH(3)) (AB) have been studied on titanium carbide electrode. The oxidation is followed by using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and polarization measurements. A fuel cell with TiC as anode and 40 wt% Pt/C as cathode is constructed and the polarization behaviour is studied with NaBH(4) as anodic fuel and hydrogen peroxide as catholyte. A maximum power density of 65 mW cm(-2) at a load current density of 83 mA cm(-2) is obtained at 343 K in the case of borhydride-based fuel cell and a value of 85 mW cm(-2) at 105 mA cm(-2) is obtained in the case of AB-based fuel cell at 353 K. An analysis of the energy budget for the general case of a body translating in a stationary fluid under the action of an external force is used to define a power loss coefficient. This universal definition of power loss coefficient gives a measure of the energy lost in the wake of the translating body and, in general, is applicable to a variety of flow configurations including active drag reduction, self-propulsion and thrust generation. The utility of the power loss coefficient is demonstrated on a model bluff body flow problem concerning a two-dimensional elliptical cylinder in a uniform cross-flow. The upper and lower boundaries of the elliptic cylinder undergo continuous motion due to a prescribed reflectionally symmetric constant tangential surface velocity. It is shown that a decrease in drag resulting from an increase in the strength of tangential surface velocity leads to an initial reduction and eventual rise in the power loss coefficient. A maximum in energetic efficiency is attained for a drag reducing tangential surface velocity which minimizes the power loss coefficient. The effect of the tangential surface velocity on drag reduction and self-propulsion of both bluff and streamlined bodies is explored through a variation in the thickness ratio (ratio of the minor and major axes) of the elliptical cylinders.
