The stability of fluid flow past a membrane of infinitesimal thickness is analysed in the limit of zero Reynolds number using linear and weakly nonlinear analyses. The system consists of two Newtonian fluids of thickness R* and H R*, separated by an infinitesimally thick membrane, which is flat in the unperturbed state. The dynamics of the membrane is described by its normal displacement from the flat state, as well as a surface displacement field which provides the displacement of material points from their steady-state positions due to the tangential stress exerted by the fluid flow. The surface stress in the membrane (force per unit length) contains an elastic component proportional to the strain along the surface of the membrane, and a viscous component proportional to the strain rate. The linear analysis reveals that the fluctuations become unstable in the long-wave (alpha --> 0) limit when the non-dimensional strain rate in the fluid exceeds a critical value Lambda(t), and this critical value increases proportional to alpha(2) in this limit. Here, alpha is the dimensionless wavenumber of the perturbations scaled by the inverse of the fluid thickness R*(-1), and the dimensionless strain rate is given by Lambda(t) = ((gamma) over dot* R*eta*/Gamma*), where eta* is the fluid viscosity, Gamma* is the tension of the membrane and (gamma) over dot* is the strain rate in the fluid. The weakly nonlinear stability analysis shows that perturbations are supercritically stable in the alpha --> 0 limit.

Recent results and data suggest that high magnetic fields in neutron stars (NS) strongly affect the characteristics (radius, mass) of the star. Such stars are even separated into a class known as magnetars, for which the surface magnetic field is greater than 10(14) G. In this work we discuss the effect of such a high magnetic field on the phase transition of a NS to a quark star (QS). We study the effect of magnetic field on the transition from NS to QS including the magnetic-field effect in the equation of state (EoS). The inclusion of the magnetic field increases the range of baryon number densities for which the flow velocities of the matter in the respective phase are finite. The magnetic field helps in initiation of the conversion process. The velocity of the conversion front, however, decreases due to the presence of the magnetic field, as the presence of the magnetic field reduces the effective pressure (P). The magnetic field of the star is decreased by the conversion process, and the resultant QS has lower magnetic field than the initial NS.

Due to extremely low off state current (IOFF) and excellent sub-threshold characteristics, the tunnel field effect transistor (TFET) has attracted a lot of attention for low standby power applications. In this work, we aim to increase the on state current (ION) of the device. A novel device architecture with a SiGe source is proposed. The proposed structure shows an order of improvement in ION compared to the conventional Si structure. A process flow adaptable to conventional CMOS technology is also addressed.

A two-dimensional finite difference model, which solves mixed type of Richards' equation, whose non-linearity is dealt with modified Picard's iteration and strongly implicit procedure to solve the resulting equations, is presented. Modeling of seepage flow through heterogeneous soils, which is common in the field is addressed in the present study. The present model can be applied to both unsaturated and saturated soils and can handle very dry initial condition and steep wetting fronts. The model is validated by comparing experimental results reported in the literature. Newness of this two dimensional model is its application on layered soils with transient seepage face development, which has not been reported in the literature. Application of the two dimensional model for studying unconfined drainage due to sudden drop of water table at seepage face in layered soils is demonstrated. In the present work different sizes of rectangular flow domain with different types of layering are chosen. Sensitivity of seepage height due to problem dimension of layered system is studied. The effect of aspect ratio on seepage face development in case of the flow through layered soil media is demonstrated. The model is also applied to random heterogeneous soils in which the randomness of the model parameters is generated using the turning band technique. The results are discussed in terms of phreatic surface and seepage height development and also flux across the seepage face. Such accurate modeling of seepage face development and quantification of flux moving across the seepage face becomes important while modeling transport problems in variably saturated media.

Electric current can induce long-range flow of liquid metals over a conducting substrate. This work reports on the effect of the substrate surface roughness on the liquid metal-front velocity during such a flow. Experiments were conducted by passing electric current through liquid gallium placed over similar to 170 nm thick, 500 mu m wide gold and platinum films of varying roughness. The ensuing flow, thus, resembles micro-fluidics behavior in an open-channel. The liquid-front velocity decreased linearly with the substrate surface roughness; this is attributed to the reduction in the effective electric field along the liquid metal-substrate interface with the substrate surface roughness. Faraday-type electromagnetic flow meters are employed for measuring the flow rate of liquid sodium in fast breeder reactors. The calibration of such flow meters, owing to the required elaborative arrangements is rather difficult. On the other hand, theoretical approach requires solution of two coupled electromagnetic partial differential equation with profile of the flow and applied magnetic field as the inputs. This is also quite involved due to the 3D nature of the problem. Alternatively, Galerkin finite element method based numerical solution is suggested in the literature as an attractive option for the required calibration. Based on the same, a computer code in Matlab platform has been developed in this work with both 20 and 27 node brick elements. The boundary conditions are correctly defined and several intermediate validation exercises are carried out. Finally it is shown that the sensitivities predicted by the code for flow meters of four different dimensions agrees well with the results given by analytical expression, thereby providing strong validation. Sensitivity for higher flow rates, for which analytical approach does not exist, is shown to decrease with increase in flow velocity.

Medical image segmentation finds application in computer-aided diagnosis, computer-guided surgery, measuring tissue volumes, locating tumors, and pathologies. One approach to segmentation is to use active contours or snakes. Active contours start from an initialization (often manually specified) and are guided by image-dependent forces to the object boundary. Snakes may also be guided by gradient vector fields associated with an image. The first main result in this direction is that of Xu and Prince, who proposed the notion of gradient vector flow (GVF), which is computed iteratively. We propose a new formalism to compute the vector flow based on the notion of bilateral filtering of the gradient field associated with the edge map - we refer to it as the bilateral vector flow (BVF). The range kernel definition that we employ is different from the one employed in the standard Gaussian bilateral filter. The advantage of the BVF formalism is that smooth gradient vector flow fields with enhanced edge information can be computed noniteratively. The quality of image segmentation turned out to be on par with that obtained using the GVF and in some cases better than the GVF.

The way in which basal tractions, associated with mantle convection, couples with the lithosphere is a fundamental problem in geodynamics. A successful lithosphere-mantle coupling model for the Earth will satisfy observations of plate motions, intraplate stresses, and the plate boundary zone deformation. We solve the depth integrated three-dimensional force balance equations in a global finite element model that takes into account effects of both topography and shallow lithosphere structure as well as tractions originating from deeper mantle convection. The contribution from topography and lithosphere structure is estimated by calculating gravitational potential energy differences. The basal tractions are derived from a fully dynamic flow model with both radial and lateral viscosity variations. We simultaneously fit stresses and plate motions in order to delineate a best-fit lithosphere-mantle coupling model. We use both the World Stress Map and the Global Strain Rate Model to constrain the models. We find that a strongly coupled model with a stiff lithosphere and 3-4 orders of lateral viscosity variations in the lithosphere are best able to match the observational constraints. Our predicted deviatoric stresses, which are dominated by contribution from mantle tractions, range between 20-70 MPa. The best-fitting coupled models predict strain rates that are consistent with observations. That is, the intraplate areas are nearly rigid whereas plate boundaries and some other continental deformation zones display high strain rates. Comparison of mantle tractions and surface velocities indicate that in most areas tractions are driving, although in a few regions, including western North America, tractions are resistive. Recent experiments on fermions in synthetic gauge fields result in systems with a spin-orbit coupling along one spatial axis, a detuning field, and a Zeeman field. We show theoretically that the presence of all three results in interesting and unusual phenomena in a system of interacting fermions (interactions described by a scattering length). For two fermions, bound states appear only over a certain range of the center-of-mass momenta. The deepest bound state appears at a nonzero center-of-mass momentum. For center-of-mass momenta without a bound state, the gauge field induces a resonance-like feature in the scattering continuum resulting in a large scattering phase shift. In the case of many particles, we demonstrate that the system, in a parameter range, shows flow-enhanced pairing, i.e., a Fulde-Farrell-Larkin-Ovchnnikov superfluid state made of robust pairs with a finite center-of-mass momentum. Yet another regime of parameters offers the opportunity to study strongly interacting normal states of spin-orbit-coupled fermionic systems utilizing the resonance-like feature induced by the synthetic gauge field.

We propose a light sheet based imaging flow cytometry technique for simultaneous counting and imaging of cells on a microfluidic platform. Light sheet covers the entire microfluidic channel and thus omits the necessity of flow focusing and point scanning based technology. Another advantage lies in the orthogonal detection geometry that totally cuts-off the incident light, thereby substantially reducing the background in the detection. Compared to the existing state-of-art techniques the proposed technique shows marked improvement. Using fluorescently-coated Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells we have recorded cell counting with throughput as high as 2,090 cells/min in the low flow rate regime and were able to image the individual cells on-the-go. Overall, the proposed system is cost-effective and simple in channel geometry with the advantage of efficient counting in operational regime of low laminar flow. This technique may advance the emerging field of microfluidic based cytometry for applications in nanomedicine and point of care diagnostics. Microsc. Res. Tech. 76:1101-1107, 2013. The influence of the flow rule on the bearing capacity of strip foundations placed on sand was investigated using a new kinematic approach of upper-bound limit analysis. The method of stress characteristics was first used to find the mechanism of the failure and to compute the stress field by using the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion. Once the failure mechanism had been established, the kinematics of the plastic deformation was established, based on the requirements of the upper-bound limit theorem. Both associated and nonassociated plastic flows were considered, and the bearing capacity was obtained by equating the rate of external plastic work to the rate of the internal energy dissipation for both smooth and rough base foundations. The results obtained from the analysis were compared with those available from the literature. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Application of high electric-field between two points in a thin metallic film results in liquefaction and subsequent flow of the liquid-film from one electrode to another in a radially symmetric fashion. Here, we report the transition of the flow kinetics driven by the liquid film thickness varying from 3 to 100 nm. The mechanism of the flow behavior is observed to be independent of the film thickness; however, the kinetics of the flow depends on the film thickness and the applied voltage. An analytical model, incorporating viscosity and varying electrical resistivity with film thickness, is developed to explain the experimental observations. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Flow cytometry is a benchmark technique used for basic research and clinical diagnosis of various diseases. Despite being a high-throughput technique, it fails in capturing the morphology of cells being analyzed. Imaging flow cytometry is a combination of flow-cytometry and digital microscopy, which offers advantages of both the techniques. In this paper, we report on the development of an indigenous Imaging Flow Cytometer, realized with the combination of Optics, Microfluidics, and High-speed imaging. A custom-made bright-field transmission microscope is used to capture images of cells flowing across the microfluidic device. High-throughput morphological analysis on suspension of yeast cells is presented.

We perform numerical experiments to study the shear dynamo problem where we look for the growth of a large-scale magnetic field due to non-helical stirring at small scales in a background linear shear flow in previously unexplored parameter regimes. We demonstrate the large-scale dynamo action in the limit where the fluid Reynolds number (Re) is below unity while the magnetic Reynolds number (Rm) is above unity; the exponential growth rate scales linearly with shear, which is consistent with earlier numerical works. The limit of low Re is particularly interesting, as seeing the dynamo action in this limit would provide enough motivation for further theoretical investigations, which may focus attention on this analytically more tractable limit of Re < 1 compared to the more formidable limit of Re > 1. We also perform simulations in the regimes where (i) both (Re, Rm) < 1, and (ii) Re > 1 and Rm < 1, and compute all of the components of the turbulent transport coefficients (alpha(ij) and alpha(ij)) using the test-field method. A reasonably good agreement is observed between our results and the results of earlier analytical works in similar parameter regimes.

Microfluidic/optofluidic microscopy is a versatile modality for imaging and analyzing properties of cells/particles while they are in flow. In this paper, we demonstrate the integration of fused silica microfluidics fabricated using femtosecond laser machining into optofluidic imaging systems. By using glass for the sample stage of our microscope, we have exploited its superior optical quality for imaging and bio-compatibility. By integrating these glass microfluidic devices into a custom-built bright field microscope, we have been able to image red blood cells in flow with high-throughputs and good fidelity. In addition, we also demonstrate imaging as well as detection of fluorescent beads with these microfluidic devices.
