In this study, we examined genetic and environmental influences on covariation among two reading tests used in neuropsychological assessment (Cambridge Contextual Reading Test [CCRT], [Beardsall, L., and Huppert, F. A. ( 1994). J. Clin. Exp. Neuropsychol. 16: 232 - 242], Schonell Graded Word Reading Test [SGWRT], [ Schonell, F. J., and Schonell, P. E. ( 1960). Diagnostic and attainment testing. Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd.]) and among a selection of IQ subtests from the Multidimensional Aptitude Battery (MAB), [Jackson, D. N. (1984). Multidimensional aptitude battery, Ontario: Research Psychologists Press.] and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) [Wechsler, D. (1981). Manual for the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R). San Antonio: The Psychological Corporation]. Participants were 225 monozygotic and 275 dizygotic twin pairs aged from 15 years to 18 years ( mean, 16 years). For Verbal IQ subtests, phenotypic correlations with the reading tests ranged from 0.44 to 0.65. For Performance IQ subtests, phenotypic correlations with the reading tests ranged from 0.23 to 0.34. Results of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) supported a model with one genetic General factor and three genetic group factors ( Verbal, Performance, Reading). Reading performance was influenced by the genetic General factor ( accounting for 13% and 20% of the variance for the CCRT and SGWRT, respectively), the genetic Verbal factor ( explaining 17% and 19% of variance for the CCRT and SGWRT), and the genetic Reading factor ( explaining 21% of the variance for both the CCRT and SGWRT). A common environment factor accounted for 25% and 14% of the CCRT and SGWRT variance, respectively. Genetic influences accounted for more than half of the phenotypic covariance between the reading tests and each of the IQ subtests. The heritabilities of the CCRT and SGWRT were 0.54 and 0.65, respectively. Observable covariance between reading assessments used by neuropsychologists to estimate IQ and IQ subtests appears to be largely due to genetic effects.

Phytochemical exploration of a wood bark extract from Durio zibethinus afforded two new triterpenoids, namely, methyl 27-O-trans-caffeoylcylicodiscate (1) and methyl 27-O-cis-caffeoylcylicodiscate (2), a new phenolic, 1,2-diarylpropane-3- ol (3), and seven known compounds, fraxidin, eucryphin, boehmenan, threo-carolignan E, (-)-(3R, 4S)-4-hydroxymellein, methyl protocatechuate, and (+)-(R)-de-O-methyllasiodiplodin (4). In addition, chemical analysis of a wood bark extract from Durio kutejensis yielded the new triterpenes 3 beta-O-trans-caffeoyl-2R-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (5) and 3 beta-trans-caffeoyl-2R-hydroxytaraxest-12-en-28-oic acid (6) together with four known compounds, maslinic acid, arjunolic acid, 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone, and fraxidin. The structures of all compounds were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data.

Approaches to quantify the organic carbon accumulation on a global scale generally do not consider the small-scale variability of sedimentary and oceanographic boundary conditions along continental margins. In this study, we present a new approach to regionalize the total organic carbon (TOC) content in surface sediments (<5 cm sediment depth). It is based on a compilation of more than 5500 single measurements from various sources. Global TOC distribution was determined by the application of a combined qualitative and quantitative-geostatistical method. Overall, 33 benthic TOC-based provinces were defined and used to process the global distribution pattern of the TOC content in surface sediments in a 1°x1° grid resolution. Regional dependencies of data points within each single province are expressed by modeled semi-variograms. Measured and estimated TOC values show good correlation, emphasizing the reasonable applicability of the method. The accumulation of organic carbon in marine surface sediments is a key parameter in the control of mineralization processes and the material exchange between the sediment and the ocean water. Our approach will help to improve global budgets of nutrient and carbon cycles.

A compilation of chemical analyses of Pacific Ocean nodules using an x-ray fluorescence technique. The equipment used was a General Electric XRD-5 with a tungsten tube. Lithium fluoride was used as the diffraction element in assaying for all elements above calcium in the atomic table and EDDT was used in conjunction with a helium path for all elements with an atomic number less than calcium. Flow counters were used in conjunction with a pulse height analyzer to eliminate x-ray lines of different but integral orders in gathering count data. The stability of the equipment was found to be excellent by the author. The equipment was calibrated by the use of standard ores made from pure oxide forms of the elements in the nodules and carefully mixed in proportion to the amounts of these elements generally found in the manganese nodules. Chemically analyzed standards of the nodules themselves were also used. As a final check, a known amount of the element in question was added to selected samples of the nodules and careful counts were taken on these samples before and after the addition of the extra amount of the element. The method involved the determination and subsequent use of absorption and activation factors for the lines of the various elements. All the absorption and activation factors were carefully determined using the standard ores. The chemically analyzed samples of the nodules by these methods yielded an accuracy to at least three significant figures.

The skin is one of the largest organs of the human body and accounts for about 16% of body weight. The body protection against the external environment microorganisms is one of its most important functions, however is necessary that the skin remain intact for this function be exercised, so that when there is an injury on the skin, the process of restructuring needs to be starts, however this restructuration may also be compromised due to some diseases, justifying even more the need for the development of topical products that promote or accelerate the skin healing. Thus the aim of this study was to extract bullfrog oil and to develop a suitable topical emulsion. Two different oil samples were extracted by hot or organic solvent process. Titration techniques and gas chromatography- mass spectrometry were used to characterize the bullfrog oil. The required hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLBr) of bullfrog oil was determined and a pseudo-ternary phase diagram was constructed. The stability of the topical emulsion was evaluated. Then, cellular viability was determined by MTT assay using normal fibroblasts (3T3) and melanoma (B16F10) cells lines. The hot extraction yield was 60.6%. The major polyunsaturated compounds found were Eicosapentaenoic acid (17.6%) and Arachidonic acid (8.4%). HLBr study demonstrated the presence of stable systems with HLB ranging from 12.1 to 13.5 and the pseudo-ternary phase diagram showed mainly emulsion systems (62%). Topical emulsion showed 390 nm, polydispersity 0.05, zeta potential -25 mV and remained stable for ninety days. The bullfrog oil and topical emulsion did not showed citotoxicity in normal fibroblasts cells. However, these systems showed significantly inhibition of melanoma cells growth. In conclusion, the bullfrog oil presented desirable chemical characteristics required to be used for the development of a pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

Recent studies have stressed the role of high latitude nutrient levels and productivity in controlling the carbon isotopic composition of the deep sea and the CO2 content of the atmosphere. We undertook a study of the chemical composition of the polar planktonic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s., sinistral coiling) from 30 late Holocene samples and 49 down core records from the high-latitude North and South Atlantic Oceans to evaluate the history of sea surface chemical change from glacial to interglacial time. Stable isotopic analysis of coretop samples from the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern Oceans shows no significant correlation between the delta13C of N. pachyderma and either delta13C or PO4 in seawater. Conversely, Cd/Ca ratios in planktonic foraminifera are consistent with the PO4 content of surface waters. The level of maximum glaciation (18,000 yr B.P.), identified by CLIMAP and delta18O, was chosen for mapping. Isopleths of delta18O on N. pachyderma (s.) in the North Atlantic reveal a pattern largely influenced by sea surface temperature (S.S.T.) and generally support the S.S.T. reconstruction of CLIMAP. Differences between the two suggest significantly lower salinity in North Atlantic surface waters at high latitudes than in lower latitudes. Down core delta13C records of N. pachyderma confirm that low delta13C values occurred in the northeast Atlantic during the latest glacial maximum (Labeyrie and Duplessy, 1985, doi:10.1016/0031-0182(85)90069-0). However, a map of delta13C for the 18,000 yr B.P. level for a much larger region in the North Atlantic shows that minimum N. pachyderma delta13C occurred in temperate waters. N. pachyderma delta13C decreased toward the southwest, reaching a minimum of -1 per mil at 37°N. Despite the variability seen in delta13C records of N. pachyderma, none of our cores show significant temporal variability in Cd/Ca. From the combined Cd/Ca and delta13C data we can see no evidence for an upwelling gyre in the eastern North Atlantic during the latest glacial maximum, nor evidence that the southern and northern oceans had significantly different levels of preformed nutrients than today.
