Declining biodiversity in agro-ecosystems, caused by intensification of production or expansion of monocultures, is associated with the emergence of agricultural pests. Understanding how land-use and management control crop-associated biodiversity is, therefore, one of the key steps towards the prediction and maintenance of natural pest-control. Here we report on relationships between land-use variables and arthropod community attributes (for example, species diversity, abundance and guild structure) across a diversification gradient in a rice-dominated landscape in the Mekong delta, Vietnam. We show that rice habitats contained the most diverse arthropod communities, compared with other uncultivated and cultivated land-use types. In addition, arthropod species density and Simpson's diversity in flower, vegetable and fruit habitats was positively related to rice cover in the local landscape. However, across the landscape as a whole, reduction in heterogeneity and the amount of uncultivated cover was associated, generally, with a loss of diversity. Furthermore, arthropod species density in tillering and flowering stages of rice was positively related to crop and vegetation richness, respectively, in the local landscape. Differential effects on feeding guilds were also observed in rice-associated communities with the proportional abundance of predators increasing and the proportional abundance of detritivores decreasing with increased landscape rice cover. Thus, we identify a range of rather complex, sometimes contradictory patterns concerning the impact of rice cover and landscape heterogeneity on arthropod community attributes. Importantly, we conclude that that land-use change associated with expansion of monoculture rice need not automatically impact diversity and functioning of the arthropod community.

We investigated patterns of bryophyte species richness and community structure, and their relation to roof variables, on thatched roofs of the Holnicote Estate, South Somerset. Thirty-two bryophyte species were recorded from 28 sampled roofs, including the globally rare and endangered thatch moss, Leptodontium gemmascens. Multiple regression analyses revealed that thatch age has a highly significant positive effect on the number of species present, accounting for nearly half the observed variation in species richness after removal of outliers. Aspect has a slight and marginally significant effect on species diversity (accounting for an additional 6% of variation), with north-facing samples having slightly more species. Age also has a significant impact on total bryophyte cover after removal of outlying observations. TWINSPAN analysis of bryophyte cover data suggests the existence of at least five discrete communities. Simple Discriminant Analyses indicate that these communities occupy different ecological subspaces as defined by the measured roof variables, with pitch, aspect and thatch age emerging as especially significant attributes. Contingency Analysis indicates that some communities are disfavoured by water reed as compared to wheat straw. The findings are significant for understanding the structure of bryophyte communities, for evaluating the effect of bryophyte cover on thatch performance, and for conservation of thatch communities, especially those harbouring rare species.

Reaction of fac-[ Mo( CO)(3)( NCMe)(3)] with three equivalents of NCCH2(C4H3S- 3) in acetonitrile gives the tris(thiophene- 3- acetonitrile) complex, fac-[Mo(CO)(3){NCCH2(C4H3S-3)}(3)] (1) in 7% yield. Complex 1 crystallizes out in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with a = 12.714( 17), b = 16.41( 2), c = 11.304(16) Angstrom, Z = 4. The structure has crystallographic m symmetry and the metal is in an almost perfect octahedral environment, with a facial arrangement of carbonyl and thiophene- 3- acetonitrile groups. The thiophene rings are disordered.

Treatment of [UO2(OTf)(2)] or [UO2I2(thf)(3)] with 1 equiv. of CyMe4BTBP in anhydrous acetonitrile led to the formation of [UO2(CyMe4BTBP)(OTf)(2)] (1) and [UO2(CyMe4BTBP)I-2] (2) which crystallized as the cationic forms [UO2(CyMe4BTBP)(py)][OTf](2) (3) and [UO2I(CyMe4BTBP)][I] (4) in pyridine and acetonitrile, respectively. These compounds are unique examples of structurally characterized actinide complexes with a BTBP molecule; this ligand adopts a planar conformation in the equatorial plane of the {UO2}(2+) ion. In pyridine, 1 is dissociated into [UO2(OTf)(2)(PY)(3)] and free CyMe4BTBP and the thermodynamic parameters (K, Delta H, Delta S) of this equilibrium have been determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The ethoxide derivative [UO2(OEt)(CyMe4BTBP)][OTf] (5) crystallized from a solution of I in a mixture of ethanol and acetone under air, and the dinuclear mu-oxo complex [{UO2(CyMe4BTBP)}(2)(mu-O)][I](2) (6) was obtained from [UO2I(thf)(2.7)] and CyMe4BTBP. The crystal structures of 6 and of the analogous derivatives [{UO2(py)(4)}(2)(mu-O)][I](2)(7) and [{UO2(TPTZ)(py)}(2)(mu-O)][I-3](2)(8) exhibit a flexible [{UO2}-O-{UO2}](2+) moiety.

Analysis of X-ray powder data for the melt-crystallisable aromatic poly(thioether thioether ketone) [-S-Ar-S-Ar-CO-Ar](n), ('PTTK', Ar= 1,4-phenylene), reveals that it adopts a crystal structure very different from that established for its ether-analogue PEEK. Molecular modelling and diffraction-simulation studies of PTTK show that the structure of this polymer is analogous to that of melt-crystallised poly(thioetherketone) [-SAr-CO-Ar](n) in which the carbonyl linkages in symmetry-related chains are aligned anti-parallel to one another. and that these bridging units are crystallographically interchangeable. The final model for the crystal structure of PTTK is thus disordered, in the monoclinic space group 121a (two chains per unit cell), with cell dimensions a = 7.83, b = 6.06, c = 10.35 angstrom, beta = 93.47 degrees. Reactivities of pyridylthioazophenols (1) with zinc(II) salts have been studied and the complexes isolated in pure form and characterized. Pyridylthioazophenols react with zinc( II)acetate in MeOH/EtOH at room temperature to give a series of pyridylsulfinylazophenols (2)but no zinc( II) complex. The sulfoxides (2) have been characterized by IR and NMR. One of the pyridylsulfinylazophenols (2a) has been subjected to single-crystal X-ray analysis in order to confirm details of its structure. A series of dimeric zinc( II) complexes of tetradentate NSNO pyridylthioazophenolates has been isolated through reaction of zinc nitrate in MeOH followed by in situ reaction with azide ion, which acts as a mu-(1,1) bridge. All complexes have been characterized spectroscopically. The detailed structure of one of the dinuclear zinc( II) complexes has been established by a single-crystal X-ray structure determination. In complex 3a two octahedrally coordinated zinc( II) ions are bridged by two end-on azide ions. No reactions of pyridylthioazophenols with zinc chloride in refluxing EtOH have been observed.

Two sets of nickel(11) complexes of a series of tetradentate NSNO ligands were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All these complexes, formulated as [Ni(L)Cl](2) and [Ni(L)(N-3)](2) [HL = pyridylthioazophenols], were characterized using physicochemical and spectroscopic tools. The solid-state structures of two complexes (1a and 2a) were established by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the nickel ion of the complexes is octahedral and the complexes are dimeric in nature. In 1, two Ni(II) ions are bridged by two Cl- anions while in 2 they are bridged by two azide ions in a mu-1,1-bridging fashion. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new 3-D zinc phosphate, [C5N2H14][Zn-2(PO3(OH))(3)], has been synthesised under solvothermal conditions in the presence of 1-methylpiperazine. The structure, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 293 K (RMM = 520.9, orthorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1); a = 10.0517(2) &ANGS;, b = 10.4293(2) &ANGS; and c = 14.9050(5) &ANGS;; V = 1562.52 &ANGS;(3); Z = 4; R(F) = 2.60%, wR(F) = 2.93%), consists of vertex linked ZnO4 and PO3(OH) tetrahedra assembled into (4.8) net sheets which in turn are linked through further PO3(OH) units to generate a 3-D framework. 1-Methylpiperazinium cations reside within the 3-D channel system, held in place by a strong network of hydrogen bonds. The (4.8) net sheets occur in a number of zeolite structures e.g. ABW and GIS and related zinc phosphate phases. © 2004 Academie des sciences. Published by Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

The adsorption of alanine on Cu {110} was studied by a combination of near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). Large chemical shifts in the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s XP spectra were found between the alanine multilayer and the chemisorbed and pseudo-(3 x 2) alaninate layers. From C, N, and O K-shell NEXAFS spectra the tilt angles of the carboxylate group (approximate to 26 degrees in plane with respect to [1 (1) over bar0] and approximate to 45 degrees out of plane) and the C-N bond angle with respect to [1 (1) over bar0] could be determined for the pseudo-(3 x 2) overlayer. Using this information three adsorption geometries could be eliminated from five p(3 x 2) structures which lead to almost identical heats of adsorption in the DFT calculations between 1.40 and 1.47 eV/molecule. Due to the small energy difference between the remaining two structures it is not unlikely that these coexist on the surface at room temperature. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three new mononuclear complexes of nitrogen-sulfur donor sets, formulated as (Fe-II(L)Cl-2] (1), [Co-II(L)Cl-2] (2) and [Ni-II(L)Cl-2] (3) where L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane, were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All the complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The solid state structures of complexes I and 3 have been established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structural analysis evidences isomorphous crystals with the metal ion in a distorted octahedral geometry that comprises NSSN ligand donors with trans located pyridine rings and chlorides in cis positions. In dimethylformamide solution, the complexes were found to exhibit Fe-II/Fe-III, co(II)/co(III) and Ni-II/Ni-III quasi-reversible redox couples in cyclic voltammograms with E-1/2 values (versus Ag/AgCl at 298 K) of +0.295, +0.795 and +0.745 V for 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Gas-phase rate coefficients for the atmospherically important reactions of NO3, OH and O-3 are predicted for 55 alpha,beta-unsaturated esters and ketones. The rate coefficients were calculated using a correlation described previously [Pfrang, C., King, M.D., C. E. Canosa-Mas, C.E., Wayne, R.P., 2006. Atmospheric Environment 40, 1170-1179]. These rate coefficients were used to extend structure-activity relations for predicting the rate coefficients for the reactions of NO3, OH or O-3 with alkenes to include alpha,beta-unsaturated esters and ketones. Conjugation of an alkene with an alpha,beta-keto or alpha,beta-ester group will reduce the value of a rate coefficient by a factor of similar to 110, similar to 2.5 and similar to 12 for reaction with NO3, OH or O-3, respectively. The actual identity of the alkyl group, R, in -C(O)R or -C(O)OR has only a small influence. An assessment of the reliability of the SAR is given that demonstrates that it is useful for reactions involving NO3 and OH, but less valuable for those of O-3 or peroxy nitrate esters. The new erbium(III) complex of picolinic acid (Hpic), ["Bu4N][Er(pic)(4)].5.5H(2)O, was synthesized and the crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound was further characterized using IR, Raman, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. The picolinate ligands (pic(-)) are coordinated through N,O-chelation to the erbium cations, as shown by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic results, leading to an eight coordinate complex. Photoluminescence measurements were performed for this compound which exhibits infrared emission. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
