We report on the EPICA Dronning Maud Land (East Antarctica) deep drilling operation. Starting with the scientific questions that led to the outline of the EPICA project, we introduce the setting of sister drillings at NorthGRIP and EPICA Dome C within the European ice-coring community. The progress of the drilling operation is described within the context of three parallel, deep-drilling operations, the problems that occurred and the solutions we developed. Modified procedures are described, such as the monitoring of penetration rate via cable weight rather than motor torque, and modifications to the system (e.g. closing the openings at the lower end of the outer barrel to reduce the risk of immersing the drill in highly concentrated chip suspension). Parameters of the drilling (e.g. core-break force, cutter pitch, chips balance, liquid level, core production rate and piece number) are discussed. We also review the operational mode, particularly in the context of achieved core length and piece length, which have to be optimized for drilling efficiency and core quality respectively. We conclude with recommendations addressing the design of the chip-collection openings and strictly limiting the cable-load drop with respect to the load at the start of the run.

This paper reports results of an investigation of a representative collection of samples recovered by deep-sea drilling from the oceanic basement 10 miles west of the rift valley axis in the crest zone of the Mid- Atlantic Ridge at 15°44'N (Sites 1275B and 1275D). Drilling operations were carried out during Leg 209 of the Drilling Vessel JOIDES Resolution within the framework of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP). The oceanic crust was penetrated to depth of 108.7 m at Site 1275B and 209 m at Site 1275D. We reconstructed the following sequence of magmatic and metamorphic events resulting in the formation of a typical oceanic core complex of slow-spreading ridges: (1) formation of strongly fractionated (enriched in iron and titanium) tholeiitic magmatic melt parental to gabbroids under investigation in a large magma chamber located in a shallow mantle and operating for a long time under steady-state conditions; (2) transfer of the parental magmatic melt of the gabbroids to the base of the oceanic crust, its interaction with host mantle peridotites, and formation of troctolites and plagioclase peridotites; (3) intrusion of enriched trondhjemite melts as veins and dikes in the early formed plutonic complex, contact recrystallization of the gabbro, and development in the peridotite-gabbro complex of enriched geochemical signatures owing to influence of trondhjemite injections; (4) emplacement of dolerite dikes (transformed to diabases); (5) metamorphism of upper epidoteamphibolite facies with participation of marine fluids; and (6) rapid exhumation of the plutonic complex to the seafloor accompanied by greenschist-facies metamorphism. Distribution patterns of Sr and Nd isotopes and strongly incompatible elements in the rocks suggest contributions from two melt sources to the magmatic evolution of the MAR crest at 15°44'N: a depleted reservoir responsible for formation of the gabbros and diabases and an enriched reservoir, from which trondhjemites (granophyres) were derived.

El presente trabajo consiste en notas de una investigación en curso. Las mismas dan cuenta del dispositivo de escritura de Washington Cucurto en relación con la pija de oro del negro que se implanta el narrador/personaje Tyson Grande/ Washington Cucurto/Norberto Vega en Las aventuras del Señor Maíz (2005). Nos interesa pensar que esa prótesis quirúrgica y corporal exhibe fuerzas (en un sentido deleuziano) que rigen toda la producción de Cucurto/Vega: la social, la económica, la sexual y la cultural latinoamericana. La pija de oro es, entonces, una condensación poética que exhibe la máquina de escritura como una bestia melancólica en cuyo cuerpo se desequilibran fuerzas en disputa por la literatura

Seismic velocities have been measured at confining pressures of 100 MPa and 600 MPa for sheeted dike samples recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Legs 137 and 140. The compressional- and shear-wave velocities show an increase with depth at Hole 504B, which is in sharp contrast to the atmospheric pressure velocity measurements performed as part of the shipboard analyses. Rocks exposed to different types of alteration and fracture patterns show distinct changes in their physical properties. The seismic reflectors observed on the vertical seismic profile (VSP) experiment performed during Leg 111 may have been caused by low velocity zones resulting from alteration. The amount of fracturing and hydrothermal alteration in several zones also may have contributed to the acoustic impedance contrast necessary to produce the E5 reflector. Poisson's ratios calculated from laboratory velocity measurements show several low values at depths ranging from 1600 mbsf to 2000 mbsf, which tends to follow similar trends obtained from previous oceanic refraction experiments. A comparison of physical properties between samples recovered from Hole 504B and ophiolite studies in the Bay of Islands and Oman shows a good correlation with the Bay of Islands but significant differences from the measurements performed in the Oman complex.

Core samples of basalt collected from Hole 504B during Leg 137 were investigated regarding their mechanical behavior. The rock samples were measured for hardness, compression strength, and modulus of elasticity. Abrasion loss of weight and Shore sclerometer methods were used for determining hardness. Static and dynamic methods were used for calculating modulus of elasticity. Test results were compared with shipboard measurements of ultrasonic velocity and dry-bulk density. Test results were interpreted statistically to provide data not only on mechanical behavior changes of the rock but also on the precision of the methods used.

Primary chemical heterogeneity in the sheeted dike complex in Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 504B makes these rocks unsuitable for conventional mass balance calculations in determining element mobility associated with hydrothermal alteration. Due to the original heterogeneity and variable degrees of fractionation in the dikes, an appropriate reference sample on which calculations can be based is difficult to find. Therefore, the use of incompatible element ratios is developed to evaluate geochemical changes during alteration(s). For example, on a Zr/Yb-La/Yb plot, scatter along a straight line suggests tapping of a variably depleted mantle source and deviation from the line suggests element mobility (gain or loss). Using this method, our data indicates that the hydrothermal evolution of the sheeted dike complex was accompanied by significant loss of Cu, Zn, and Ti and some loss of La. The sheeted dike complex has low platinum group element (PGE) concentrations and steep PGE patterns, typical of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) on the global scale. We propose that the unusual PGE patterns of MORBs cannot be entirely generated by a partial melting and sulfide segregation model; instead, these patterns in part must have been inherited from their mantle source. The Au data show no evidence for mobilization during hydrothermal alteration of the dikes.

Quantitative analysis of the late Cenozoic planktonic foraminiferal record from western Arabian Sea Site 722 revealed long term trends in the history of oceanography and climate. The modern western Arabian Sea surface waters are highly influenced by the monsoonal wind system. Summer upwelling, a result of southwestern winds, occurs along the coast of Somalia which produces distinct foraminiferal assemblages which are dominated by G. bulloides d'Orbigny. Consequently, variations in the distribution record of G. bulloides through time monitor the upwelling history associated with monsoonal activities. G. bulloides was a minor constituent of the foraminiferal fauna from the bottom of the hole (~14.5 Ma) until about 8.6 Ma ago. Then a rapid shift occurred toward higher values, up to 53% at 7.4 Ma. We interpret this rapid increase as a major step in the evolution of the monsoonal history. It is either the establishment of the system or at least a strong intensification of the monsoonal winds. At 5.5 Ma a significant drop of the G. bulloides relative abundance occurred which may indicate less upwelling, or alternatively other biota may have been favored in this period. From 5.0 Ma to Recent the G. bulloides record indicates that upwelling has occurred with minor fluctuations.

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 176 built upon the work of ODP Leg 118 wherein the 500-m section that was sampled represented the most complete recovery of an intact portion of lower oceanic crust ever described. During Leg 176, we deepened Hole 735B to >1500 m below seafloor in an environment where gabbroic rocks have been tectonically exposed at the Southwest Indian Ridge. This new expedition extended the remarkable recovery (>85%) that allowed unprecedented investigations into the nature of the lower oceanic crust as a result of Leg 118. Sulfide mineral and bulk rock compositions were determined from samples in the 1000-m section of oceanic gabbros recovered during Leg 176. The sulfide assemblage of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pentlandite, and troilite is present throughout this section, as it is throughout the 500-m gabbroic section above that was sampled during Leg 118. Troilite is commonly present as lamellae, and the only interval where troilite was not observed is from the uppermost 150 m of the section sampled during Leg 118, which is intensely metamorphosed. The common presence of troilite indicates that much of the sulfide assemblage from Hole 735B precipitated from a magmatic system and subsequently underwent low-temperature reequilibration. Evaluation of geochemical trends in bulk rock and sulfides indicates that the combined effects of olivine accumulation in troctolites and high pentlandite to pyrrhotite ratios account for the sporadic bulk rock compositions high in Ni. Bulk rock and sulfide mineral geochemical indicators that are spatially coincident with structural and physical properties anomalies indicate a heretofore unrecognized lithologic unit boundary in this section. Platinum-group element (PGE) compositions were also determined for 36 samples from throughout the section that were recovered during Leg 176. Whereas most samples had low (<0.4 ppb) PGE concentrations, rare samples had elevated PGE values, but no unique common trend between these samples is evident.

During the late early Miocene to early middle Miocene, the Owen Ridge was uplifted to a sufficient height as to be above the realm of turbidite deposition. Monsoonal-induced upwelling appears to have been initiated during the Miocene. On the Oman Margin, the effect of upwelling on the microplankton was established by the middle Miocene. However, the effects of upwelling on the Owen Ridge region were not realized until later, in the early late Miocene. A transition in the upwelling regime took place between the Pliocene and Pleistocene. While the Miocene and Pliocene sediments are dominated by the siliceous component, the Pleistocene sediments seem to be dominated by the calcareous component.
