Ecological and Economic Impacts within the Environmental Input-Output Framework

The environmental input-output approach reveals the channels through which the environmental burdens of production activities are transmitted throughout the economy. This paper uses the input-output framework and analyses the changes in Spanish emission multipliers during the period 1995-2000. By decomposing the global changes in multipliers into different components, it is possible to evaluate separately the economic and ecological impacts captured by the environmental input-output model. Specifically, in this study we distinguish between the effects on multipliers caused by changes in emission coefficients (the ecological impacts) and the effects on multipliers caused by changes in technical coefficients (the economic impacts). Our results show a significant improvement in the ecological impacts of production activities, which contributed negatively to changes in emission multipliers. They also show a deterioration in the economic impacts, which contributed positively to changes in emission multipliers. Together, these two effects lead to a small reduction in global multipliers during the period of analysis. Our results also show significant differences in the individual behaviour of different sectors in terms of their contribution to multiplier changes. Since there are considerable differences in the way individual sectors affect the changes in emission levels, and in the intensity of these effects, this means that the final effects will basically depend on the activity considered. Ecological sustainability and urban form

One controversial idea present in the debate on urban sustainability is that urban sprawl is an ecological stressing problem. We have tested this popular assumption by measuring the ecological footprint of commuting and housing of the 163 municipalities of the Barcelona Metropolitan Region and by relating the estimated values with residential density and accessibility, the fundamental determinant of residential density according to the Monocentric City Model.

La información televisiva durante la crisis del Prestige. Anàlisis de contenido de los noticiarios de TVE1, TV3, Antena 3 y telecinco

La catàstrofe mediambiental generada per l’enfonsament del petroler Prestige enfront de les costes gallegues al 2002 ha estat un dels majors desastres ecològics a Espanya i les seves conseqüències es van estendre al terreny polític i social, generant una situació de crisi sense precedents al territori espanyol. Aquest treball de recerca inclou el marc teòric, la metodologia i els primers resultats de l’estudi de la informació televisiva emesa per quatre cadenes generalistes de televisió durant tota la crisi. A més d’una revisió crítica de les teories de la comunicació i els seus mètodes d’investigació, s’ofereix un estudi sobre el concepte i l’estructura del noticiari televisiu, així com unes notes introductòries sobre la cobertura de cada cadena.

Anàlisi socio-ambiental dels usos tradicionals, actuals i futurs de les bordes : prova pilot a la zona del Bosc de Virós (Pallars Sobirà)

El present projecte ha estat desenvolupat entre l’octubre de 2006 i el febrer de 2007 per un equip de llicenciades en Ciències Ambientals per la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. L’objecte d’estudi han estat les bordes, construccions agro-ramaderes utilitzades tradicionalment per a emmagatzemar l’herba i estabular-hi el bestiar. L’àmbit d’estudi seleccionat ha estat el Bosc de Virós, contingut dins el municipi d’Alins, a la comarca del Pallars Sobirà, Catalunya. Part de la superfície estudiada es troba sota la protecció del Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu. Per a dur a terme aquest estudi, s’ha desenvolupat una metodologia d’estudi de bordes amb dues vessants diferenciades que requereixen de tècniques metodològiques específiques. La vessant tècnica d’aquestes construccions s’ha materialitzat en un inventari de bordes, desenvolupat a partir de dades obtingudes durant l’observació al camp. La vessant etnològica s’ha obtingut a través de la realització d’entrevistes als propietaris, usuaris i gestors de la zona. A partir de l’anàlisi dels resultats, s’ha detectat una pèrdua de la funció tradicional d’aquestes construccions, derivant a una diversificació dels usos i un elevat grau d’abandonament d’aquestes. La diagnosi de l’estat d’aquests edificis i la seva influència sobre l’entorn és que els nous usos desenvolupats generen pressions sobre el medi i que el desús implica la degradació de l’estructura, amb la conseqüent pèrdua de patrimoni.

Between specialization and globalization. The marketing of agrarian products and its environmental impacts seen from a historical perspective: the province of Barcelona in the mid-nineteenth century

Ecological economics has five good reasons to consider that economic globalisation, spurred by commercial and financial fluxes, to be one of the main driving forces responsible for causing environmental degradation to our planet. The first, is the energy consumption and the socio-environmental impacts which long-distance haulage entails. The second, is the ever-increasing flow of goods to far-away destinations which renders their recycling practically impossible. This is particularly significant, because it prevents the metabolic lock of the nutrients present in food and other agrarian products from taking place. The third, is that the high degree of specialization attained in agriculture, forestry, cattle, mining and industry in each region, generates deleterious effects not only on the eco-landscape structure of the uses of the soil, but on the capability to provide habitat and environmental functions to maintain biodiversity as well

Diagnosis socioambiental y presupuesto para el Parque Nacional Los Quetzales (Costa Rica)

Se realiza una diagnosis socioambiental y un presupuesto para el Plan de Manejo del Parque Nacional Los Quetzales (PNLQ). El PNLQ ocupa una superficie de 4117 ha. Presenta un régimen hí­drico elevado favorecido por la topografí­a quebrada que permite la presencia de fajas de condensación. Estas condiciones favorecen la presencia del bosque nublado que como se ha observado es el hábitat de innumerables especies, algunas de las cuales presentan gran valor ecológico. El presupuesto para el Plan de Manejo refleja cómo los gastos superan en una proporción importante a los ingresos, por lo que se recomienda centrar los esfuerzos en la búsqueda de formas de financiación (pago por servicios ambientales, convenios, co-manejo y donaciones). También se hace precisa una aportación anual del Gobierno Central para la ejecución del Plan.

Challenge of transition in the socio-professional insertion of youngsters with neurodisabilities

Patients with neurodisabilities require early management, continuing into adulthood. Thus, transition services were implemented in hospitals. To have a better support when they enter into adult life, it is useful to know the problems that they could face. The aim of this study is to evaluate their activities and to assess their insertion problems in the professional world. It is based on medical records of patients, aged 16 to 25 years, followed in the transition clinic of young adults in the Neurorehabilitation services of a tertiary centre. From 387 patients of the paediatric consultation, there are 267 patients (69%), included 224 with neurodevelopmental diseases and 43 with neuromuscular diseases. Nearly half of them (46.8%) were in a protected environment, 37.08% studied and 3.4% worked. Paradoxically, only 29.2% reported work problems. These results highlight the need to increase the integration of young adults with neuromotor disorders in the labor market.

Esquistossomose mansônica: dinâmica da transmissão

The following remarks were addressed at the round table that discussed the alternative approaches to schistosomiasis control. The address begins with a short analysis of the progressive spread of the area of distribution of the disease, and of the difficulties faced by those in charge of control programs, conventional or otherwise. A model was sketched, taking into consideration the distinct classes of factors involved in the dynamics of transmission: biological, immunological, ecological, socio-cultural, and economical. The true significance and pertinence of such a model was analysed, and the relevant questions that must be answered before a true representative model can be constructed, were listed.

Contribució de les varietats locals a la conservació de l'agrobiodiversitat: cas d'estudi en horts d'alta muntanya al Pallars Jussà, Pirineu català

Durant les últimes dècades, el paper dels horts familiars en la conservació de la agrobiodiversitat ha adquirit cada vegada més importància a nivell mundial. Les varietats locals que es cultiven en aquests horts tenen propietats intrínseques que les fan superiors a les comercials en molts aspectes, com han demostrat alguns dels estudis sobre aquests agroecosistemes duts a terme als Tròpics, i que posen en evidència l'actual sistema agrícola, alhora que representen una oportunitat per al desenvolupament sostenible de l´agricultura. En aquest treball d'investigació, dut a terme a la Vall Fosca (Pirineus Català d'Espanya) s'ha estudiat el paper les varietats locals dels horts familiars com a mecanisme de millora i manteniment d'aquests agroecosistemes, analitzant quins són els possibles factors sociodemogràfics i ecològics que condicionen el desenvolupament d'aquestes varietats als horts familiars.

Declaración sobre la crisis económica global y su impacto en las compras consorciadas (19 de enero de 2009)

Redactada en nombre de los muchos consorcios de bibliotecas de todo el mundo que participan en ICOLC, esta declaración tiene dos propósitos. Tiene la intención de ayudar a los editores y otros proveedores de contenido con los cuales tenemos acceso a los recursos de información electrónica (de ahora en adelante simplemente llamados editores) a entender mejor cómo la actual crisis económica única afecta a la comunidad de la información de todo el mundo. El segundo propósito es sugerir un abanico de propuestas que creemos son de beneficio común para las bibliotecas y los proveedores de servicios de información.
