purpose of this study was to investigate the role of brain al-adrenergic receptor binding in the rat model of pancreatic regeneration using 60-70% pancre:dectorny. The a, -adrenergic receptors kinetics was studied in the cerebral cor:cx and brain stem of sham operated . 72 It pan- crea(ectoinised and 7 days pancreatectomised rats. Scar chard analysis with I `I I lprazocin in cerebral cartes and brain stein showed a significant decrease (/' < 0.01). (P < 0.05) in maximal binding ( 1),,,,,) with it significant decrease (P < 0.001 ), ( P < 0.01) in the K,,in 72 It pancreatecto- raised rats compared with sham , respectively . Competition analysis in cerebral cortex and brain stem showed it shift in affinity during pancreatic regeneration . The sympathetic activity was decreased as indicated by the significantly de- increased norepinephrine level in the plasma (P < 0.001), cerebral cortex (P < 0.01) and brain stem (P < 0.001) of 72 h pancreatectomised rats compared to sham . Thus, from our results it is suggested that the central a, -adrenergic receptors have a functional role in the pancreatic regenera- Lion mediated through the sympathetic pathway.

Muscarinic M1 and M3 receptor changes in the brain stem during pancreatic regeneration were investigated. Brain stem acetylcholine esterase activity decreased at the time of regeneration . Sympathetic activity also decreased as indicated by the norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (EPI) content of adrenals and also in the plasma. Muscarinic Ml and M3 receptors showed reciprocal changes in the brain stem during regeneration. Muscairnic M1 receptor number decreased at time of regeneration without any change in the affinity. High affinity M3 receptors showed an increase in the number. The affinity did not show any change . The number of low affinity receptors decreased with decreased Kd at 72 hours after partial pancreatectomy. The Kd reversed to control value with a reversal of the number of receptors to near control value . Gene expression studies also showed a similar change in the mRNA level of Ml and M3 receptors . These alterations in the muscarinic receptors regulate sympathetic activity and maintain glucose level during pancreatic regeneration. Central muscarinic M1 and M3 receptor subtypes functional balance is suggested to regulate sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, which in turn control the islet cell proliferation and glucose homeostasis.

In the present study, serotonin 2C (5-HT2c) receptor binding parameters in the brainstem and cerebral cortex were investigated during liver generation after partial hepatectomy (PH) and N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) induced hepatic neoplasia in male Wistar rats. The serotonin content increased significantly (p<0.01) in the cerebral cortex after PH and in NDEA induced hepatic neoplasia. Brain stem serotonin content increased significantly (p<0.05) after PH and (p<0.001) in NDEA induced hepatic neoplasia. The number and affinity of the 5-HT2c receptors in the crude synaptic membrane preparations of the brain stem showed a significant (p<0.001) increase after PH and in NDEA induced hepatic neoplasia. The number and affinity of 5-HT2c receptors increased significantly (p<0.001) in NDEA induced hepatic neoplasia in the crude synaptic membrane preparations of the cerebral cortex. There was a significant (p<0.01) increase in plasma norepinephrine in PH and (p<0.001) in NDEA induced hepatic neoplasia, indicating sympathetic stimulation. Thus, our results suggest that during active hepatocyte proliferation 5-HT2c receptor in the brain stem and cerebral cortex are up-regulated which in turn induce hepatocyte proliferation mediated through sympathetic stimulation.

5-Hydroxytryptamine2A (5-HT2A) receptor kinetics was studied in cerebral cortex and brain stem of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Scatchard analysis with [3H] (±) 2,3dimethoxyphenyl-l-[2-(4-piperidine)-methanol] ([3H]MDL100907) in cerebral cortex showed no significant change in maximal binding (Bmax) in diabetic rats compared to controls. Dissociation constant (K) of diabetic rats showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in cerebral cortex, which was reversed to normal by insulin treatment. Competition studies of [3H]MDL100907 binding in cerebral cortex with ketanserin showed the appearance of an additional low affinity site for 5-HT2A receptors in diabetic state, which was reversed to control pattern by insulin treatment. In brain stem, scatchard analysis showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in Bmax accompanied by a significant increase (p < 0.05) in Kd. Competition analysis in brain stem also showed a shift in affinity towards a low affinity State for 5-HT2A receptors. All these parameters were reversed to control level by insulin treatment. These results show that in cerebral cortex there is an increase in affinity of 5-HT2A receptors without any change in its number and in the case of brain stem there is an increase in number of 5HT2A receptors accompanied by a decrease in its affinity during diabetes. Thus, from the results we suggest that the increase in affinity of 5-HT2A receptors in cerebral cortex and upregulation of 5-HT2A receptors in brain stem may lead to altered neuronal function in diabetes.

In this study, a novel improved technology could be developed to convert the recalcitrant coir pith into environmental friendly organic manure. The standard method of composting involves the substitution of urea with nitrogen fixing bacteria viz. Azotobacter vinelandii and Azospirillum brasilense leading to the development of an improved method of coir pith. The combined action of the microorganisms could enhance the biodegradation of coir pith. In the present study, Pleurotus sajor caju, an edible mushroom which has the ability to degrade coir pith, and the addition of nitrogen fixing bacteria like Azotobacter vinelandii and Azospirillum brasilense could accelerate the action of the fungi on coir pith. The use of these microorganisms brings about definite changes in the NPK, Ammonia, Organic Carbon and Lignin contents in coir pith. This study will encourage the use of biodegraded coir pith as organic manure for agri/horti purpose to get better yields and can serve as a better technology to solve the problem of accumulated coir pith in coir based industries

Rhizome rot disease caused by Erwinia spp. is emerging as a major problem in banana nurseries and young plantations worldwide. Management of the disease is possible only in the initial stages of development. Currently no method is available for rescuing plant material already infected with this pathogen. A total of 95 Nanjanagud Rasabale and 212 Elakki Bale suckers were collected from different growing regions of Karnataka, India. During nursery maintenance of these lines, severe Erwinia infection was noticed. We present a method to rescue infected plants and establish them under field conditions. Differences were noticed in infection severity amongst the varieties and their accessions. Field data revealed good establishment and growth of most rescued plants under field conditions. The discussed rescue protocol coupled with good field management practices resulted in 89.19 and 82.59 percent field establishment of previously infected var. Nanjanagud Rasabale and var. Elakki Bale plants, respectively.

The combined effects of shoot pruning (one or two stems) and inflorescence thinning (five or ten flowers per inflorescence) on greenhouse tomato yield and fruit quality were studied during the dry season (DS) and rainy season (RS) in Central Thailand. Poor fruit set, development of undersized (mostly parthenocarpic) fruits, as well as the physiological disorders blossom-end rot (BER) and fruit cracking (FC) turned out to be the prevailing causes deteriorating fruit yield and quality. The proportion of marketable fruits was less than 10% in the RS and around 65% in the DS. In both seasons, total yield was significantly increased when plants were cultivated with two stems, resulting in higher marketable yields only in the DS. While the fraction of undersized fruits was increased in both seasons when plants were grown with a secondary stem, the proportions of BER and FC were significantly reduced. Restricting the number of flowers per inflorescence invariably resulted in reduced total yield. However, in neither season did fruit load considerably affect quantity or proportion of the marketable yield fraction. Inflorescence thinning tended to promote BER and FC, an effect which was only significant for BER in the RS. In conclusion, for greenhouse tomato production under climate conditions as they are prevalent in Central Thailand, the cultivation with two stems appears to be highly recommendable whereas the measures to control fruit load tested in this study did not proof to be advisable.

We show that the prion protein (PrP) is expressed on the surface of bone marrow cell populations enriched in long-term repopulating hematopoietic stem cells. Affinity purification of the PrP-positive and PrP-negative fractions from these populations, followed by competitive reconstitution assays, show that all long-term repopulating hematopoietic stem cells express PrP. Hematopoietic stem cells from PrP null bone marrow exhibit impaired self-renewal in serial competitive transplantation experiments, and premature exhaustion when exposed to cell cycle-specific myelotoxic injury. Therefore, PrP is a novel marker for hematopoietic stem cells and regulates their self-renewal.

Blood tissue is composed approximately in 45% by cells and its derivatives, with a life span of around 120 days for erythrocytes and 3 years for certain type of lymphocytes. This lost is compensated with the hematopoietic system activity and the presence of an immature primitive cell population known as Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) which perform the hematopoiesis, a process that is active from the beginning of the fetal life and produces near to 2 x 1011 eritrocytes and 1010 white blood cells per day (1). Hematopoietic Stem Cells are capable of both self-renewal and differentiation into multiple lineages, are located in a particular niche and are identified by their own cell surface markers, as the CD34 antigen. Recently it has been possible to advance in the understanding of self-renewal, differentiation and proliferation processes and in the involvement of the signaling pathways Hedgehog, Notch and Wnt. Studying the influence of these mechanisms on in vivo and in vitro behavior and the basic biology of HSCs, has given valuable tools for the generation of alternative therapies for hematologic disorders as leukemias.

Conocer cómo resuelven los conflictos niños normales y niños con dificultades en el desarrollo de entre 4 a 6 años y qué características presentan los niños que tienen dificultades en el desarrollo. La muestra consta de 99 niños de entre 4 y 6 años,68 pertenecientes a escuelas de Cerdanyola y Ripollet y 31 niños que recibían asistencia psicológica en los centros de atención precoz (Dapsi) de Cerdanyola del Vallès y de Sant Cugat. Primero se presenta una recopilación de los principales autores clásicos sobre el tema del juego, partiendo desde el psicoanálisis, la teoría cognitiva, la escuela rusa y la terapia de juego no directiva, y posteriormente se presentan los instrumentos en los que el juego se ha utilizado como diagnóstico. Finalmente se exponen algunas de las bases para el análisis del lenguaje narrativo del niño. En la segunda parte, que corresponde a la investigación empírica, los niños fueron filmados durante la aplicación del MSSB y después se codificó cada respuesta entre dos tipos: las respuestas prosociales y las no sociales. También se registraron las consecuencias que mencionaban los niños cuando no respondían de una forma social. Finalmente se registró el tipo de juego y el nivel de ansiedad durante la aplicación del instrumento. MacArthur Story Stem Battery. Este instrumento utiliza los muñecos de la familia para la comprensión de las historias planteadas a los niños, quienes a través del lenguaje y de su narración completan y resuelven la historia planteada. Por lo tanto se analiza tanto el lenguaje del niño como su capacidad de juego. Los resultados muestran que los niños normales respondían de una forma prosocial más veces que los niños con retraso en el desarrollo. Cuando los niños respondían de una forma no social, la consecuencia más común era el castigo en igual porcentaje en ambos grupos. El personaje más frecuente fue la madre y su representación fue de tipo positivo en los dos grupos. El tipo de juego predominante fue el juego simple (juego en el que el niño representa acciones) seguido por el juego simbólico, y el juego de tipo exploratorio sólo se presentó en el grupo de niños con retraso en el desarrollo y se observó que estaba asociado a los niños que padecían déficit de atención. Finalmente el nivel de ansiedad fue mínimo en los niños normales, mientras que en el grupo de niños con retraso en el desarrollo se observaron varios casos de tensión e inhibición. La conclusión general es que los niños entre 4 y 6 años muestran distintas formas de afrontar y resolver los conflictos planteados dependiendo del grupo de estudio y de la presencia de uno o varios trastornos psicológicos. Los niños del grupo control muestran un mejor desarrollo de la moral y mejores relaciones familiares que los niños del grupo clínico.
