A layer-wise theory with the analysis of face ply independent of lamination is used in the bending of symmetric laminates with anisotropic plies. More realistic and practical edge conditions as in Kirchhoff's theory are considered. An iterative procedure based on point-wise equilibrium equations is adapted. The necessity of a solution of an auxiliary problem in the interior plies is explained and used in the generation of proper sequence of two dimensional problems. Displacements are expanded in terms of polynomials in thickness coordinate such that continuity of transverse stresses across interfaces is assured. Solution of a fourth order system of a supplementary problem in the face ply is necessary to ensure the continuity of in-plane displacements across interfaces and to rectify inadequacies of these polynomial expansions in the interior distribution of approximate solutions. Vertical deflection does not play any role in obtaining all six stress components and two in-plane displacements. In overcoming lacuna in Kirchhoff's theory, widely used first order shear deformation theory and other sixth and higher order theories based on energy principles at laminate level in smeared laminate theories and at ply level in layer-wise theories are not useful in the generation of a proper sequence of 2-D problems converging to 3-D problems. Relevance of present analysis is demonstrated through solutions in a simple text book problem of simply supported square plate under doubly sinusoidal load.

Arterial walls have a regular and lamellar organization of elastin present as concentric fenestrated networks in the media. In contrast, elastin networks are longitudinally oriented in layers adjacent to the media. In a previous model exploring the biomechanics of arterial elastin, we had proposed a microstructurally motivated strain energy function modeled using orthotropic material symmetry. Using mechanical experiments, we showed that the neo-Hookean term had a dominant contribution to the overall form of the strain energy function. In contrast, invariants corresponding to the two fiber families had smaller contributions. To extend these investigations, we use biaxial force-controlled experiments to quantify regional variations in the anisotropy and nonlinearity of elastin isolated from bovine aortic tissues proximal and distal to the heart. Results from this study show that tissue nonlinearity significantly increases distal to the heart as compared to proximally located regions (). Distally located samples also have a trend for increased anisotropy (), with the circumferential direction stiffer than the longitudinal, as compared to an isotropic and relatively linear response for proximally located elastin samples. These results are consistent with the underlying tissue histology from proximally located samples that had higher optical density (), fiber thickness (), and trend for lower tortuosity () in elastin fibers as compared to the thinner and highly undulating elastin fibers isolated from distally located samples. Our studies suggest that it is important to consider elastin fiber orientations in investigations that use microstructure-based models to describe the contributions of elastin and collagen to arterial mechanics.

The problem of finding a satisfying assignment that minimizes the number of variables that are set to 1 is NP-complete even for a satisfiable 2-SAT formula. We call this problem MIN ONES 2-SAT. It generalizes the well-studied problem of finding the smallest vertex cover of a graph, which can be modeled using a 2-SAT formula with no negative literals. The natural parameterized version of the problem asks for a satisfying assignment of weight at most k. In this paper, we present a polynomial-time reduction from MIN ONES 2-SAT to VERTEX COVER without increasing the parameter and ensuring that the number of vertices in the reduced instance is equal to the number of variables of the input formula. Consequently, we conclude that this problem also has a simple 2-approximation algorithm and a 2k - c logk-variable kernel subsuming (or, in the case of kernels, improving) the results known earlier. Further, the problem admits algorithms for the parameterized and optimization versions whose runtimes will always match the runtimes of the best-known algorithms for the corresponding versions of vertex cover. Finally we show that the optimum value of the LP relaxation of the MIN ONES 2-SAT and that of the corresponding VERTEX COVER are the same. This implies that the (recent) results of VERTEX COVER version parameterized above the optimum value of the LP relaxation of VERTEX COVER carry over to the MIN ONES 2-SAT version parameterized above the optimum of the LP relaxation of MIN ONES 2-SAT. The use of algebraic techniques to solve combinatorial problems is studied in this paper. We formulate the rainbow connectivity problem as a system of polynomial equations. We first consider the case of two colors for which the problem is known to be hard and we then extend the approach to the general case. We also present a formulation of the rainbow connectivity problem as an ideal membership problem.

A computationally efficient Li-ion battery model has been proposed in this paper. The battery model utilizes the features of both analytical and electrical circuit modeling techniques. The model is simple as it does not involve a look-up table technique and fast as it does not include a polynomial function during computation. The internal voltage of the battery is modeled as a linear function of the state-of-charge of the battery. The internal resistance is experimentally determined and the optimal value of resistance is considered for modeling. Experimental and simulated data are compared to validate the accuracy of the model.

In this paper the cubic spline guidance law is presented for intercepting a stationary target at a desired impact angle. The guidance law is obtained from cubic spline curve based trajectory using an inverse method. The cubic spline t rajectory curve expresses the altitude as a cubic polynomial of the downrange. The guidance law is modified to achieve interception in the cases where impact angle is greater that or equal to 90◦. The guidance law is implemented in a feedback mode to maintain the desired impact angle and to reduce miss distance in the presence of lateral acceleration saturation and atmospheric distur- bances. The simulation results show that the guidance law fulfills all the requirements.

This paper presents a novel, soft computing based solution to a complex optimal control or dynamic optimization problem that requires the solution to be available in real-time. The complexities in this problem of optimal guidance of interceptors launched with high initial heading errors include the more involved physics of a three dimensional missile-target engagement, and those posed by the assumption of a realistic dynamic model such as time-varying missile speed, thrust, drag and mass, besides gravity, and upper bound on the lateral acceleration. The classic, pure proportional navigation law is augmented with a polynomial function of the heading error, and the values of the coefficients of the polynomial are determined using differential evolution (DE). The performance of the proposed DE enhanced guidance law is compared against the existing conventional laws in the literature, on the criteria of time and energy optimality, peak lateral acceleration demanded, terminal speed and robustness to unanticipated target maneuvers, to illustrate the superiority of the proposed law. In this paper, we study the free vibration of axially functionally graded (AFG) Timoshenko beams, with uniform cross-section and having fixed-fixed boundary condition. For certain polynomial variations of the material mass density, elastic modulus and shear modulus, along the length of the beam, there exists a fundamental closed form solution to the coupled second order governing differential equations with variable coefficients. It is found that there are an infinite number of non-homogeneous Timoshenko beams, with various material mass density, elastic modulus and shear modulus distributions having simple polynomial variations, which share the same fundamental frequency. The derived results can be used as benchmark solutions for testing approximate or numerical methods used for the vibration analysis of non-homogeneous Timoshenko beams. They can also be useful for designing fixed-fixed non-homogeneous Timoshenko beams which may be required to vibrate with a particular frequency. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Cubic Sieve Method for solving the Discrete Logarithm Problem in prime fields requires a nontrivial solution to the Cubic Sieve Congruence (CSC) x(3) equivalent to y(2)z (mod p), where p is a given prime number. A nontrivial solution must also satisfy x(3) not equal y(2)z and 1 <= x, y, z < p(alpha), where alpha is a given real number such that 1/3 < alpha <= 1/2. The CSC problem is to find an efficient algorithm to obtain a nontrivial solution to CSC. CSC can be parametrized as x equivalent to v(2)z (mod p) and y equivalent to v(3)z (mod p). In this paper, we give a deterministic polynomial-time (O(ln(3) p) bit-operations) algorithm to determine, for a given v, a nontrivial solution to CSC, if one exists. Previously it took (O) over tilde (p(alpha)) time in the worst case to determine this. We relate the CSC problem to the gap problem of fractional part sequences, where we need to determine the non-negative integers N satisfying the fractional part inequality {theta N} < phi (theta and phi are given real numbers). The correspondence between the CSC problem and the gap problem is that determining the parameter z in the former problem corresponds to determining N in the latter problem. We also show in the alpha = 1/2 case of CSC that for a certain class of primes the CSC problem can be solved deterministically in <(O)over tilde>(p(1/3)) time compared to the previous best of (O) over tilde (p(1/2)). It is empirically observed that about one out of three primes is covered by the above class. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We show that as n changes, the characteristic polynomial of the n x n random matrix with i.i.d. complex Gaussian entries can be described recursively through a process analogous to Polya's urn scheme. As a result, we get a random analytic function in the limit, which is given by a mixture of Gaussian analytic functions. This suggests another reason why the zeros of Gaussian analytic functions and the Ginibre ensemble exhibit similar local repulsion, but different global behavior. Our approach gives new explicit formulas for the limiting analytic function.

In this paper, we extend the characterization of Zx]/(f), where f is an element of Zx] to be a free Z-module to multivariate polynomial rings over any commutative Noetherian ring, A. The characterization allows us to extend the Grobner basis method of computing a k-vector space basis of residue class polynomial rings over a field k (Macaulay-Buchberger Basis Theorem) to rings, i.e. Ax(1), ... , x(n)]/a, where a subset of Ax(1), ... , x(n)] is an ideal. We give some insights into the characterization for two special cases, when A = Z and A = ktheta(1), ... , theta(m)]. As an application of this characterization, we show that the concept of Border bases can be extended to rings when the corresponding residue class ring is a finitely generated, free A-module. In this article, we analyse several discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the Stokes problem under minimal regularity on the solution. We assume that the velocity u belongs to H-0(1)(Omega)](d) and the pressure p is an element of L-0(2)(Omega). First, we analyse standard DG methods assuming that the right-hand side f belongs to H-1(Omega) boolean AND L-1(Omega)](d). A DG method that is well defined for f belonging to H-1(Omega)](d) is then investigated. The methods under study include stabilized DG methods using equal-order spaces and inf-sup stable ones where the pressure space is one polynomial degree less than the velocity space.

In this paper, the governing equations for free vibration of a non-homogeneous rotating Timoshenko beam, having uniform cross-section, is studied using an inverse problem approach, for both cantilever and pinned-free boundary conditions. The bending displacement and the rotation due to bending are assumed to be simple polynomials which satisfy all four boundary conditions. It is found that for certain polynomial variations of the material mass density, elastic modulus and shear modulus, along the length of the beam, the assumed polynomials serve as simple closed form solutions to the coupled second order governing differential equations with variable coefficients. It is found that there are an infinite number of analytical polynomial functions possible for material mass density, shear modulus and elastic modulus distributions, which share the same frequency and mode shape for a particular mode. The derived results are intended to serve as benchmark solutions for testing approximate or numerical methods used for the vibration analysis of rotating non-homogeneous Timoshenko beams.

The explicit description of homogeneous operators and localization of a Hilbert module naturally leads to the definition of a class of Cowen-Douglas operators possessing a flag structure. These operators are irreducible. We show that the flag structure is rigid in the sense that the unitary equivalence class of the operator and the flag structure determine each other. We obtain a complete set of unitary invariants which are somewhat more tractable than those of an arbitrary operator in the Cowen-Douglas class. (C) 2014 Academie des sciences.
