Crystal structure of a novel myotoxic Arg49 phospholipase A(2) homolog (zhaoermiatoxin) from Zhaoermia mangshanensis snake venom: Insights into Arg49 coordination and the role of Lys122 in the polarization of the C-terminus

The venom of Zhaoermia mangshanensis, encountered solely in Mt Mang in China's Hunan Province, exhibits coagulant, phosphodiesterase, L-amino acid oxidase, kallikrein, phospholipase A(2) and myotoxic activities. The catalytically inactive PLA(2) homolog referred to as zhaoermiatoxin is highly myotoxic and displays high myonecrotic and edema activities. Zhaoermiatoxin possesses a molecular weight of 13,972 Da, consists of 121 amino-acid residues crosslinked by seven disulfide bridges and shares high sequence homology with Lys49-PLA(2)s from the distantly related Asian pitvipers. However, zhaoermiatoxin possesses an arginine residue at position 49 instead of a lysine, thereby suggesting a secondary Lys49 -> Arg substitution which results in a catalytically inactive protein. We have determined the first crystal structure of zhaoermiatoxin, an Arg49-PLA(2), from Zhaoermia mangshanensis venom at 2.05 A resolution, which represents a novel member of phospholipase A(2) family. In this structure, unlike the Lys49 PLA(2)s, the C-terminus is well ordered and an unexpected non-polarized state of the putative calcium-binding loop due to the flip of Lys122 towards the bulk solvent is observed. The orientation of the Arg-49 side chain results in a similar binding mode to that observed in the Lys49 PLA(2)s; however, the guadinidium group is tri-coordinated by carbonyl oxygen atoms of the putative calcium-binding loop, whereas the N zeta atom of lysine is tetra-coordinated as a result of the different conformation adopted by the putative calcium-binding loop. Polarization in fermion scattering

The behaviour of the helicity of an initially left-handed beam of massive fermions first interacting with a Coulomb field and then with a charged scalar particle via a photon exchange is analysed. It is found that in both cases the massive fermions have their helicity flipped, while massless fermions seeem to be unaffected by the electromagnetic field as far as their helicity is concerned.

Discriminating new physics scenarios at the Next Linear Collider: The role of polarization

We explore the potential of the Next Linear Collider, operating in the e γ mode, to disentangle new physics scenarios in single W production. We study the effects related to the exchange of composite fermions in the reaction e γ→Wνe, and compare them with those arising from trilinear gauge boson anomalous couplings. We stress the role played by the initial state polarization to increase the reach of this machine and to discriminate the possible origin of the new phenomena.

Abelian vectors and self-dual tensors in six-dimensional supergravity

In this note we describe the most general coupling of abelian vector and tensor multiplets to six-dimensional (1,0) supergravity. As was recently pointed out, it is of interest to consider more general Chern-Simons couplings to abelian vectors of the type H(r) = dB(r) - 1/2 c(rab)AadAb, with c(r) matrices that may not be simultaneously diagonalized. We show that these couplings can be related to Green-Schwarz terms of the form B(r)c(r)/abFaFb, and how the complete local Lagrangian, that embodies factorized gauge and supersymmetry anomalies (to be disposed of by fermion loops) is uniquely determined by Wess-Zumino consistency conditions, aside from an arbitrary quartic coupling for the gauginos. The use of pulsed electric acoustic technique for measuring the polarization reversal in ferroelectric ceramic samples

The pulsed electric acoustic technique, PEA, has been usually applied to probe space charge profiles in polymers. Preliminary PEA results using a ferroelectric ceramic are presented. If the reverse applied electric field i of the order of the coercive field the switching polarization process occurs in a period larger than hundreds of seconds. Such a slow process allows one to use the PEA setup to follow the polarization switching dynamics and determine the electric field profile. The PEA signal obtained in the lead zirconate-titanate doped with niobium ceramic, PZTN, indicates that the polarization distribution and field are not uniform during the switching period. We were also able to observe that the acoustic wave velocity and attenuation depends on the stage of the polarization switching, which agrees with results obtained using the ultrasonic method.

Stable and metastable ferroelectric polarization analyzed by the ramp voltage technique

The study of the stable and the metastable ferroelectric polarization of poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, was performed using two successive equal sign ramp voltages, mediated by a short-circuit period. Rates from 10 V/s up to 0.7 MV/s were used. Results showed that they follow different formation kinetics; that the stable part decreases for higher ramp voltage rates and its apparent coercive field increases.

Polarization of Σ+ hyperons produced by 800 GeV/c protons on Cu and Be

We show that Σ+ hyperons produced by 800 GeV/c protons on targets of Be and Cu have significant polarizations (15-20%). These polarizations persist at values of pt = 2 GeV/c and a wide range of xF. The polarizations from the Cu target are consistently less than from Be. The average ratio of the Σ+ polarization from Cu to that from Be is 0.68 ± 0.08.

Evaluation of urban ants (hymenoptera: formicidae) as vectors of microorganisms in residential and industrial environments: II. Fungi

Collections in households and industrial kitchens were done aiming at evaluating the potential of urban ants in spreading fungi. The most abundant ant species in households were Tapinoma melanocephalum and Paratrechina longicornis. In industrial kitchens Paratrechina longicornis and Monomorium floricola were the most common. Tapinoma melanocephalum was the species that most carried fungi, followed by Paratrechina longicornis, Tetramorium sp., Monomorium pharaonis and Monomorium floricola. An aflatoxigenic strain of Aspergillus flavus was isolated.

Microwave switchable frequency selective surface with high quality factor resonance and low polarization sensitivity

We present a microwave switchable frequency selective surface with high quality factor transmission resonance. The high quality resonance is achieved by excitation of the trapped-mode in array with two concentric metal rings in a cell on a silicon substrate. Optical activation of the silicon substrate permits to switch off the transmission band.
