The structure and dynamics of silver ion conducting AgI-Ag2MoO4 glasses have been simulated by molecular dynamics simulation over a wide range of compositions. Formation of silver iodide like aggregates have been identified only in the AgI rich glasses. Increase in silver ion conductivity with an increase in AgI content in the glass is seen as in experiments. The dynamics of ion transport suggests that Ag+ ion transport occurs largely through paths connected by silver ion sites of mixed iodide-oxide coordination. The Van Hove correlation functions indicate that Ag+ ions prefer migration along the pathways formed with connected sites of similar coordination.

The formation of the metallic glass and crystalline phases and related microstructures and the decomposition behavior of rapidly solidified Ti75Ni25 alloys obtained under different processing conditions have been investigated in detail. The competition between glass transition and nucleation of beta-Ti during rapid solidification leads to the possibility of synthesizing the nanocomposites of beta-Ti and glass. Additionally, it is shown that the presence of a small amount of Si also promotes simultaneous nucleation of fine Ti2Ni intermetallic compound. Thermodynamic calculation of the metastable phase diagram indicates the presence of a metastable eutectic reaction between alpha-Ti and Ti2Ni. Evidence of this reaction at lower cooling rates has been presented. On heating, the glass decomposes through this reaction. Finally, on the basis of understanding of the microstructural evolution during decomposition, a new approach has been adopted to synthesize a nanodispersed composite of alpha-Ti in the crystalline Ti2Ni matrix with a narrow size distribution by controlling the devitrification heat treatment of the metallic glass.

We present experimental x-ray-absorption spectra at the oxygen and 3d transition-metal K edges of LaFeO3 and LaCoO3. We interpret the experimental results in terms of detailed theoretical calculations based on multiple-scattering theory. Along with providing an understanding of the origin of various experimental features, we investigate the effects of structural distortions and the core-hole potential in determining the experimental spectral shape. The results indicate that the core-hole potential as well as many-body effects within the valence electrons do not have any strong effect on the spectra suggesting that the spectral features can be directly interpreted in terms of the electronic structure of such compounds.

Electrical conductivity and dielectric relaxation studies with a wide range of compositions of lithium ion conducting glasses belonging to the ternary glass system Li2SO4-Li2O-B2-O3- have been carried out over the temperature range 150-450 K and between 10 - 10(7) Hz. DC conductivities exhibit two different activation regions. This seems to suggest the presence of a cluster tissue texture in these glasses with weakly ordered clusters of Li2SO4 and lithium berates being held together by a truly amorphous tissue of the same average composition as clusters. AC conductivity behaviour of these glasses has been analysed using both power law and stretched exponential relaxation functions. The variation of the power law exponent s and the stretched exponent beta with temperature seems to be consistent with the presence of a cluster tissue texture in these glasses.

We report results of statistical and dynamic analysis of the serrated stress-time curves obtained from compressive constant strain-rate tests on two metallic glass samples with different ductility levels in an effort to extract hidden information in the seemingly irregular serrations. Two distinct types of dynamics are detected in these two alloy samples. The stress-strain curve corresponding to the less ductile Zr65Cu15Ni10Al10 alloy is shown to exhibit a finite correlation dimension and a positive Lyapunov exponent, suggesting that the underlying dynamics is chaotic. In contrast, for the more ductile Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5 alloy, the distributions of stress drop magnitudes and their time durations obey a power-law scaling reminiscent of a self-organized critical state. The exponents also satisfy the scaling relation compatible with self-organized criticality. Possible physical mechanisms contributing to the two distinct dynamic regimes are discussed by drawing on the analogy with the serrated yielding of crystalline samples. The analysis, together with some physical reasoning, suggests that plasticity in the less ductile sample can be attributed to stick-slip of a single shear band, while that of the more ductile sample could be attributed to the simultaneous nucleation of a large number of shear bands and their mutual interactions. Dimeric or gemini surfactants consist of two hydrophobic chains and two hydrophilic head groups covalently connected by a hydrophobic or hydrophilic spacer. This paper reports the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements from aqueous micellar solutions of two different recently developed types of dimeric surfactants: (i) bis-anionic C16H33PO4--(CH2)(m)-PO4-C16H33,2Na(+) dimeric surfactants composed of phosphate head groups and a hydrophobic polymethylene spacer, referred to as 16-m-16,2Na(+), for spacer lengths m = 2, 4, 6, and 10, (ii) bis-cationic C16H33N+(CH3)(2)-CH2-(CH2-O-CH2)(p)-CH2-N+ (CH3)(2)C16H33,2Br(-) dimeric surfactants composed of dimethylammonium head groups and a wettable polyethylene oxide spacer, referred to as 16-CH2-p-CH2-16,2Br(-), for spacer lengths p = 1 - 3. The micellar structures of these surfactants are compared with the earlier studied bis-cationic C16H33N+ (CH3)(2)-(CH2)(m)-N+ (CH3)(2)C16H33,2Br(-) dimeric surfactants composed of dimethylammonium head groups and a hydrophobic polymethylene spacer, referred to as 16-m-16,2Br(-). It is found that 16-m-16,2Na(+), similar to 16-m-16,2Br(-), form various micellar structures depending on the spacer length. Micelles an disklike for rn = 2, rodlike for m = 4, and prolate ellipsoidal fur m = 6 and 10. The micelles of 16-CH2-p-CH2-16,2Br(-) are prolate ellipsoidal for all the values of p = 1 - 3. It is also found that micelles of 16-m-16,2Na(+) and 16-CH2-p-CH2-16,2Br(-) are large in comparison to those of 16-in-16,2Br(-) for similar spacer lengths. This is connected with the fact that both in 16-m-16,2Na(+) and 16-CH2-p-CH2-16,2Br(-), the head group or the spacer is more hydrated as compared to that in the 16-m-16,2Br(-). An increase in the hydration of the spacer or the head group increases the screening of the Coulomb repulsion between the charged head groups. This effect has been found to be more pronounced in the dimeric surfactants having wettable spacers. [S1063-651X(99)00303-7].

The design and development of nonresonant edge slot antenna for phased array applications has been presented. The radiating element is a slot cut on the narrow wall of rectangular waveguide (edge slot). The admittance characteristics of the edge slot have been rigorously studied using a novel hybrid method. Nonresonant arrays have been fabricated using the present slot characterization data and the earlier published data. The experimentally measured electrical characteristics of the antenna are presented which clearly brings out the accuracy of the present method.

Potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and its isomorphs have received enormous attention in the last 2 decades. In particular, KTP assumes importance due to its large nonlinear optic and electrooptic coefficients together with the broad thermal and angular acceptance for second harmonic generation. This article provides an overview of the material aspects, structural, physical, and chemical properties and device feasibility of the KTP family of crystals. Some of the current areas of research and development along with their significance in understanding the physical properties as well as device applications are addressed. Optical waveguide fabrication processes and characteristics with their relevance to the present-day technology are highlighted. Studies performed so far have enabled us to understand the fundamental aspects of these materials and what needs to be pursued vigorously is the exploitation of their device applications to the maximum extent.

Abstract: A wide range of compositions of grasses in the ternary Li2O-PbO-B2O3 glass system was prepared, and de and ac conductivity measurements were carried out on these glasses. The presence of lead leads to a decrease in de conductivities and an increase in the activation energies. This is likely to be due to the increase of the partial charges on the oxygen atoms and to the presence of the lone pair on the Pb atom; both of these factors impede lithium ion motion. The ac conductivity and dielectric behavior of these glasses support such a conjecture. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Marked ball grinding rests were carried out in the laboratory with a low grade phosphate ore under different experimental conditions. Two types of balls were used, namely high carbon low alloy (HCLA) cast steel and high chrome cast iron. Results of marked ball grinding tests indicated that ball wear increased with time and showed a sharp increase for wet grinding over dry grinding. Ball wear under wet grinding conditions was also influenced by the gaseous atmosphere in the mill. The grinding ball materials could be arranged in the following order with respect to their overall wear resistance: High chrome cast iron > HCLA cast steel balls Methods to minimize ball wear through control of mill atmosphere and addition of flotation reagents are discussed. Effect of grinding media and additions of flotation reagents during grinding on phosphate ore flotation are also discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thermal and spectroscopic investigations have been carried out on a number of glasses with a wide range of compositions in the pseudoternary glass system, Li2SO4-Li2O-B2O3, to understand the role of sulfate ions in modifying the borate glass structure. Both nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopic results indicate that four-coordinate boron atoms are retained in the glass structure to a greater extent in sulfate-containing glasses than in pure lithium borate glasses. There seems to be some evidence for the existence of sulfoborate-type units in Raman spectra in the region of 800-960 cm(-1). These conclusions are supported by the observed behavior of glass transition temperatures and molar volumes. The possibility of formation of sulfoborate-type units is discussed from bonding and thermodynamic points of view.

Ge10Te90-xSex (50 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 70) and Ge20Te80-xSex (x = 30, 50) glasses have been prepared by melt-quenching The thermal crystallization behaviour of these samples has been studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), in order to characterise these glasses for memory-threshold switching applications. It is found that Ge10Te90-xSex glasses have higher thermal stability and are more stable against devitrification. These samples may be suitable for threshold switching devices. Ge20Te80-xSex glasses, on the other hand, phase separate on heating and exhibit a double stage crystallization. Based on this, it can be expected that Ge20Te80-xSex samples will show memory behaviour. The activation energy for thermal crystallization of a representative Ge10Te40-xSe50 glass belonging to the Ge10Te90-xSex series has been found by the Kissinger's method to be 0.92 eV. The value of the activation energy obtained also indicates that Ge10Te90-xSex samples are less prone to devitrification and more suitable for threshold behaviour.

Glasses of the composition 2TeO(2)-V2O5 were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and the glassy nature of the as-quenched samples were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The glass transition and crystallization parameters were evaluated under non-isothermal conditions using DSC. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the presence of partially oriented crystallites in the heat-treated glasses. Kauzmann temperature (lower bound for the kinetically observed glass transition) was deduced from the heating rate dependent glass transition and crystallization temperatures.

Glasses in the system CaO-Bi2O3-B2O3 (in molar ratio) have been prepared using melt-quenching route. Ion transport characteristics were investigated for this glass using electric modulus, ac conductivity and impedance measurements. The ac conductivity was rationalized using Almond-West power law. Dielectric relaxation has been analyzed based on the behavior of electric modulus behavior. The activation energy associated with the electrical relaxation determined from the electric modulus spectra was found to be 1.76 eV, close to that the activation energy for dc conductivity (1.71 eV) indicating that the same species took part in both the processes. The stretched exponent beta (0.5-0.6) is invariant with temperature for the present glasses.
