Dispersed organic matter of plant origin from three sites of the Middle America Trench transect was investigated by coal petrographic methods. Samples from the slope region are rich in lipoid and inert substances. Humic matter is predominant in the trench sediments. Reflectance measurements show that the rank of the organic matter is peat, independent of the tectonic position and age of the samples in question. A slow increase of coalification with depth is observed.

The Arkhangelsk area lies in the region that was reached by the northeastern flank of the Scandinavian ice sheet during the last glaciation. Investigations of Late Pleistocene sediments show interglacial terrestrial and marine conditions with sea level up to 52 m above the present level. An unconformity in the stratigraphy suggests a hiatus representing the Early Valdaian (Weichselian) and the beginning of the Middle Valdaian. This unconformity could be related to a low base level and isostatic depression of the area north of Arkhangelsk, either caused by ice masses advancing from the Kara and Barents ice sheets and/or to Scandinavian ice over the Kola Peninsula. During Middle Valdaian, from c. 66 ka BP, until the advance of the Late Valdaian glacier, c. 17-16 ka BP, peat formation, and northward fluvial sedimentation occurred coexisting with permafrost conditions in a later phase. Before the glacier advance, the base level rose and thick vertical accumulations of fluvial sediments were formed. Associated with this glacier advance from the north-northwest, ice damming occurred. Fluvial drainage was opposite to the present drainage pattern and deposition appeared in glaciolacustrine ponds in the area outside the limit of the glaciation. After the deglaciation that started c. 15 ka BP, permafrost conditions and downwasting of buried stagnant glacier ice prevailed until at least 10.7 ka BP.

There is a great similarity between pollen types which occur in the early Holocene NE Tibetan pollen spectra and those which are commonly considered to be typical for the Würm Late Glacial period in Central Europe and for the Würm Pleniglacial period in Southern Europe. Evidently, this similarity is due to a remarkable general conformity of plant taxa growing in cold-arid regions of the northern hemisphere. The improvement of the climate and the retreat of the glaciers that commenced at the end of the Würm period had already terminated definitely before 9500 BP. In addition, the climatic situation as well as the vegetation belts must have remained rather constant during the following 3000 yr, i.e. through most parts of the climatic optimum of the Holocene.

The reconstruction of the stable carbon isotope evolution in atmospheric CO2 (d13Catm ), as archived in Antarctic ice cores, bears the potential to disentangle the contributions of the different carbon cycle fluxes causing past CO2 variations. Here we present a new record of d13Catm before, during and after the Marine Isotope Stage 5.5 (155 000 to 105 000 years BP). The record was derived with a well established sublimation method using ice from the EPICA Dome C (EDC) and the Talos Dome ice cores in East Antarctica. We find a 0.4 permil shift to heavier values between the mean d13Catm level in the Penultimate (~ 140 000 years BP) and Last Glacial Maximum (~ 22 000 years BP), which can be explained by either (i) changes in the isotopic composition or (ii) intensity of the carbon input fluxes to the combined ocean/atmosphere carbon reservoir or (iii) by long-term peat buildup. Our isotopic data suggest that the carbon cycle evolution along Termination II and the subsequent interglacial was controlled by essentially the same processes as during the last 24 000 years, but with different phasing and magnitudes. Furthermore, a 5000 years lag in the CO2 decline relative to EDC temperatures is confirmed during the glacial inception at the end of MIS 5.5 (120 000 years BP). Based on our isotopic data this lag can be explained by terrestrial carbon release and carbonate compensation.

Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 320 recovered high-quality paleomagnetic records with over 800 dated reversals and decimeter-scale cyclic sediments which provide an outstanding framework to inter-calibrate major fossil groups and refine magnetic polarity chrons for the early Miocene, the entire Oligocene and the late Eocene Epoch. In order to reconstruct the climate history of the Equatorial Pacific one of the major objectives of the Pacific Equatorial Age Transect (PEAT) is the compilation of a Cenozoic Megasplice which integrates all available bio-, chemo-, and magnetostratigraphic data including key records from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199. Here we present extended post-cruise refinements of the shipboard composite depth scales and composite records of IODP Expedition 320 Sites U1331, U1332, U1333, U1334 as well as ODP Leg 199 Sites 1218, 1219 and 1220. The revised composite records were used to perform a site-to-site correlation and integration of Leg 199 and Exp. 320 sites. Based on this decimeter scale correlation a high resolution integrated paleomagnetic and biostratigraphic framework for the Equatorial Pacific is established covering the time from 20 to 40 Ma. This unprecedented sedimentary compendium from the Equatorial Pacific will be the backbone for paleoceanographic reconstructions for the late Paleogene.

Site details: The raised bog Fláje-Kiefern (50°429N, 13°329 E; 760 m a.s.l.; size ca. 500x500 m) lies in the Krusné Hory Mountains (Erzgebirge), Czech Republic, about 10 km from Georgenfelder Moor in Germany. Hejny and Slavík (1988) described the phytogeographic region of the Krusne Hory Mountains as 'a region of mountain flora and vegetation, with thermophilous species largely missing. In the natural forests, conifers, especially spruce (Picea excelsa) prevail. The deforested areas have been converted into meadows and pastures'. The climate is cool with annual average temperatures of about 5°C and annual precipitation of about 900 mm. The bedrock is Precambrian crystallinicum.
