Care has come to dominate much feminist research on globalized migrations and the transfer of labor from the South to the North, while the older concept of reproduction had been pushed into the background but is now becoming the subject of debates on the commodification of care in the household and changes in welfare state policies. This article argues that we could achieve a better understanding of the different modalities and trajectories of care in the reproduction of individuals, families, and communities, both of migrant and nonmigrant populations by articulating the diverse circuits of migration, in particular that of labor and the family. In doing this, I go back to the earlier North American writing on racialized minorities and migrants and stratified social reproduction. I also explore insights from current Asian studies of gendered circuits of migration connecting labor and marriage migrations as well as the notion of global householding that highlights the gender politics of social reproduction operating within and beyond households in institutional and welfare architectures. In contrast to Asia, there has relatively been little exploration in European studies of the articulation of labor and family migrations through the lens of social reproduction. However, connecting the different types of migration enables us to achieve a more complex understanding of care trajectories and their contribution to social reproduction.

This is a book on general issues to do with assessment, not a statistics book, although it touches on statistical issues. Although it is intended for an international readership to include teachers, educationalists, policy makers and personnel managers and would be of interest to such groups it has been written mainly from the viewpoint of developed countries and is not obviously essential reading or an essential purchase for anyone. Short biographies of the 15 contributors are given at the start of the book and references from all the chapters are brought together at the end. The order of chapters appears to be arbitrary to some extent and there is little cross-referencing from one chapter to another.

The view that Gothic literature emerged as a reaction against the prominence of the Greek classics, and that, as a result, it bears no trace of their influence, is a commonplace in Gothic studies. This thesis re-examines this view, arguing that the Gothic and the Classical were not in opposition to one another, and that Greek tragic poetry and myth should be counted among the literary sources that inspired early Gothic writers. The discussion is organised in three parts. Part I focuses on evidence which suggests that the Gothic and the Hellenic were closely associated in the minds of several British literati both on a political and aesthetic level. As is shown, the coincidence of the Hellenic with the Gothic revival in the second half of the eighteenth century inspired them not only to trace common ground between the Greek and Gothic traditions, but also to look at Greek tragic poetry and myth through Gothic eyes, bringing to light an unruly, ‘Dionysian’ world that suited their taste. The particulars of this coincidence, which has not thus far been discussed in Gothic studies, as well as evidence which suggests that several early Gothic writers were influenced by Greek tragedy and myth, open up new avenues for research on the thematic and aesthetic heterogeneity of early Gothic literature. Parts II and III set out to explore this new ground and to support the main argument of this thesis by examining the influence of Greek tragic poetry and myth on the works of two early Gothic novelists and, in many ways, shapers of the genre, William Beckford and Matthew Gregory Lewis. Part II focuses on William Beckford’s Vathek and its indebtedness to Euripides’s Bacchae, and Part III on Matthew Gregory Lewis’s The Monk and its indebtedness to Sophocles’s Oedipus Tyrannus. As is discussed, Beckford and Lewis participated actively in both the Gothic and Hellenic revivals, producing highly imaginative works that blended material from the British and Greek literary traditions.

Introducción: El incremento de pacientes sintomáticos de rodilla y la osteoartrosis en jóvenes con limitadas posibilidades terapéuticas después de una meniscectomía, genera la búsqueda de alternativas terapéuticas. A pesar que es poco utilizado en Colombia, el trasplante meniscal es una propuesta para el manejo sintomático. Según cifras norteamericanas, se practican entre 700.000 a 1.500.000 artroscopias de rodilla anualmente, el 50% termina en meniscectomía y de este un 40% persisten sintomáticos. Métodos: Estudio de cohorte retrospectivo, con el objetivo de evaluar dolor (Escala Visual Análoga-EVA) y funcionalidad (Escala de Tegner y Lysholm) en los pacientes a quienes se les realizó trasplante meniscal o meniscectomía por segunda vez, entre los años 2007 a 2015. Resultados: A partir de los 6 meses la EVA mostró una tendencia a la mejoría en el grupo de trasplante meniscal, pasando de Moderado a Leve (p: <0.000). La Escala de Tegner y Lysholm cambió de Pobre a Bueno en el grupo de segunda meniscectomía (p= 0.008) y de Bueno a Excelente en el grupo trasplantado (p=0.225). La calificación promedio de la EVA en el grupo de trasplante presentó mejoría (p=<0.000), a diferencia del grupo de segunda meniscectomía (p=0.591). La escala de Tegner y Lysholm, mostró significancia estadística con tendencia a la mejoría en el grupo de segunda meniscectomía. Discusión: Los resultados muestran que con trasplante meniscal hay mejoría del dolor y la funcionalidad versus un segunda meniscectomía. Para fortalecer la evidencia de este tratamiento son necesarios estudios prospectivos complementarios.

“Aqui, todos são loucos. Eu sou louco. Tu és louca!”, diz o Gato de Cheshire empoleirado numa árvore, donde parece adquirir o ponto de vista abrangente de um esclarecido filósofo, em Alice no País das Maravilhas. Este iluminado pensamento, verbalizado por um animal conotado com a prática da reflexividade e da contemplação, revela-nos como Lewis Carroll usou o nonsense para nos dizer que este nos é muitas vezes imposto sem que se possa controlar nem escapar à perplexidade que nos causa. Todas as definições aprendidas para nos podermos orientar no mundo serão, assim, completamente arbitrárias, não tendo este afinal qualquer sentido a priori, exigindo que cada um lhe atribua o seu próprio sentido. Quando no capítulo VII, intitulado “Um Lanche Maluco”, Alice toma chá com a Lebre de Março e o Chapeleiro, este tenta definir a semelhança surreal entre um corvo e uma secretaria, interpretada por Alice como uma adivinha, mas não havendo para esta qualquer solução, como sem explicação ficarão muitas situações comuns vividas no nosso quotidiano.

This paper analyzes two works of the canadian writer Nancy Huston: Marcas de nascença and A espécie fabuladora. The main idea is to support the reading of the former work based on the reflections raised by the latter, especially regarding the aspect concerning issues such as the Meaning and the (re) invention of the self. The relevance of these concepts will be effective in an immersion in the universe of the four main characters of the novel Marcas de nascença: Sun, Randall, Sadie and Kristina. The paper focuses on seeking the essence of Meaning in the life of each one of these characters, always considering two vital and non-discernible ​​aspects: time and space in each of them. Therefore, literature and culture concepts will be considered such as the concept of Americanness as well as the Americanization, Identity, Fiction and Recognition. Thus, this assay is divided into two parts. The first one envisions the idea matter expressed by Huston in A espécie fabuladora - the ceaseless quest for Meaning culminating in identity shaping – in order to seek understanding from this point of view the occurrence of certain cultural phenomena of which some characters from Marcas de nascença are an expression. The second part observes each of the four main characters and strengthens the suggested initial idea (that the book's characters are constituent parts of a behavioral matrix vital to human existence), then filling the gaps of the two themes developed: the birthmarks transmitted throughout four generations and how these marks are recorded over fifty-six years of history.

RESUMEN: Este artículo presenta un acercamiento entre la obra de la escritora argentina Alejandra Pizarnik y los dos más conocidos libros de Lewis Carroll, Alicia en el país de las maravillas y Alicia a través del espejo. El jardín buscado por Alicia de Carroll fue una obsesión de Alejandra Pizarnik, quien declaró en una entrevista a Martha Isabel Moia su deseo de verlo. A partir de este deseo reiterado en su obra, intentamos recorrer nuevamente el trayecto de la Alicia de Carroll hacia el jardín, con el objetivo de acercarnos a esta niña que sufre la angustia de enfrentarse a dos espacios fantásticos que coinciden con los espacios enfrentados por el “yo” lírico de los poemas de Pizarnik. Así como Alicia quiere ver el jardín y sufre la dificultad de su acceso, también el sujeto lírico construido por Alejandra quiere entrar en este espacio de deseo que es a la vez terrorífico. En la segunda aventura con los espejos, Alicia, al final del trayecto, se convierte en reina, en un movimiento que se asemeja al “yo” lírico de Alejandra, que a lo largo de su obra evoluciona de la niña inocente a la Condesa Sangrienta. Por este trayecto, observaremos como el sujeto lírico construido por Pizarnik avanza por un camino de desajuste, sufriendo en este juego la pérdida de una identidad, mientras intenta recobrar el lugar del ensueño, la visión del jardín: el paraíso de la infancia, el lugar del deseo.
