This study was conducted to investigate how visually impaired people perform distance estimation tasks by movement and navigation during deprivation of effective perceptual and proprioceptive information. For that they performed the task of walking three distances, being the first and second of 100 meters and the third of 140 meters (triangulation) from a point of origin in open field on a inverted L shaped trajectory and then returning to the origin. The first and second tasks were driven by means of a guide with GPS adapted to the study coordinates, and the third one was freeform with three sessions, the first without perceptual and proprioceptive restrictions, the second without auditory perception, and the third in a wheelchair, without proprioception. The objective of this study was to indicate the differences in distance reproduction in relation to accuracy and investigate the spatial representation of participants in a navigation task, in which there is active movement, but no effective perceptual and proprioceptive information. Results showed that the average participants underestimated distances producing average angles close to the value of 45°. And by means of the "t" students test no significant differences between subjects can be pointed out. To achieve these results we used remote monitoring by GPS and software TrackMaker.

Governament organizations has as challenge for their governance the requirement ro improve evaluation system that measure the acting of their mediations and profefer for society informations about achievements. The text analyze the challenges and advances of evaluation tools for produce guidelines that could be inserted at context of decision-making from public agents. Thereunto informations must be reliable and real-time, creating vectors of haste for modernization of informational capacity of State as a whole.

Orbital wall reconstruction with titanium mesh:Retrospective study of 24 patients

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of traumatic orbital defect reconstruction with titanium mesh. A retrospective study was made. Evaluations were made after a minimum postoperative follow-up of 12 months, looking for the main complications. Twenty-four patients were included in this evaluation; 19 were male (79.1%) and 5 (20.8%) were female. The main injury etiology was vehicle accidents (50%) followed by other causes. Fourteen patients (58.3%) presented orbital floor fractures, and 10 had more than one wall fractured (41.6%). Permanent infraorbital nerve hypoesthesia was observed in two patients (8.3%), enophthalmos occurred in five patients (20.8%), and exophthalmos was found in two patients (8.3%). Four patients (16.6%) still presented evidence of residual prolapsed intraorbital content, and one of those needed further surgical correction; sinusitis occurred in one patient (4.1%). Titanium mesh is a reliable option for orbital reconstruction, despite some complications found in this sample.

Gene expression of estrogen receptor-alpha in orbital fibroblasts in Graves’ ophthalmopathy

Graves’ ophthalmopathy (GO) is one of the most severe clinical manifestations of Graves’ disease (GD), and its treatment might involve high-dose glucocorticoid therapy. The higher incidence of GO among females, and the reported association between polymorphisms of estrogen receptor (ER) and GD susceptibility have led us to question the role of estrogen and its receptor in GO pathogenesis. We, thus, assessed estrogen receptor-alpha (ERA) gene expression in cultures of orbital fibroblasts from a patient with GO before (controls) and after treatment with 10 nM and 100 nM dexamethasone (DEX). Orbital fibroblasts showed ERA gene expression. In the cells treated with 10 nM and 100 nM DEX, ERA gene expression was, respectively, 85% higher and 74% lower, than in the control group. We concluded that ERA gene expression is found in the orbital fibroblasts of patient with GO, which may be affected by glucocorticoids in a dose-related manner. Diagnóstico parasitológico de horticultures no monitoramento da contaminação parasitária em ambientes rurais

The objective of this study was to detect possible carriers of parasites and/or commensals between the horticulturists of Fair of the Producer from Upper Paranaiba, Minas Gerais. A total of 30 horticulturists were instructed to collect three stool samples on alternate days during the months of August and September 2007. Horticulturists were positive 40% for one or more parasite and / or dinner, and found: Giardia lamblia (3.5%), Entamoeba histolytica / E. dispar (7%), Entamoeba coli (13%), Endolimax nana (13%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (3.5%). Stool of gardeners is of importance in monitoring parasite sanitary conditions of vegetables sold in urban environments.

Three adult cases of orbital hidrocystoma presenting with blepharoptosis

To report adult cases of superior orbital apocrine hidrocystoma. Retrospective case series of three patients with superior orbital apocrine hidrocystoma and blepharoptosis with review of the clinical aspects of each of the cases. All three cases presented with blepharoptosis. Two of the cases had occult hidrocystoma, and one was visibly subcutaneous at presentation. Although rare and more common along the eyelid margin, apocrine hidrocystomas may occur in the orbit leading to secondary blepharoptosis and should be included within the differential diagnosis of orbital cysts. Physicians should therefore be aware of this possibility.
