Study Design. Systematic Review. Objectives. To assess the effects of massage therapy for nonspecific low back pain. Summary of Background Data. Low back pain is one of the most common and costly musculoskeletal problems in modern society. Proponents of massage therapy claim it can minimize pain and disability, and speed return to normal function. Methods. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL from their beginning to May 2008. We also searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library 2006, issue 3), HealthSTAR and Dissertation abstracts up to 2006. There were no language restrictions. References in the included studies and in reviews of the literature were screened. The studies had to be randomized or quasi-randomized trials investigating the use of any type of massage (using the hands or a mechanical device) as a treatment for nonspecific low back pain. Two review authors selected the studies, assessed the risk of bias using the criteria recommended by the Cochrane Back Review Group, and extracted the data using standardized forms. Both qualitative and meta-analyses were performed. Results. Thirteen randomized trials were included. Eight had a high risk and 5 had a low risk of bias. One study was published in German and the rest in English. Massage was compared to an inert therapy (sham treatment) in 2 studies that showed that massage was superior for pain and function on both short- and long-term follow-ups. In 8 studies, massage was compared to other active treatments. They showed that massage was similar to exercises, and massage was superior to joint mobilization, relaxation therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture, and self-care education. One study showed that reflexology on the feet had no effect on pain and functioning. The beneficial effects of massage in patients with chronic low back pain lasted at least 1 year after the end of the treatment. Two studies compared 2 different techniques of massage. One concluded that acupuncture massage produces better results than classic (Swedish) massage and another concluded that Thai massage produces similar results to classic (Swedish) massage. Conclusion. Massage might be beneficial for patients with subacute and chronic nonspecific low back pain, especially when combined with exercises and education. The evidence suggests that acupuncture massage is more effective than classic massage, but this need confirmation. More studies are needed to confirm these conclusions, to assess the impact of massage on return-to-work, and to determine cost-effectiveness of massage as an intervention for low back pain.

Once delighted by the moving image advent as a new method of realistically presenting reality, the viewer has been reposition himself towards the audiovisual contents he consumes, as he is given the opportunity to create and share his own perspective of that reality. We are living in a new technological setting, governed mainly by factors of interactivity, digital systems and technological convergence. The research project that we will present in this paper focuses on the subject of participatory media and the way cultural institutions are increasingly facing the inevitability of a profound revision of their traditional parameters of unidirectional communication, given the increasing availability of tools for audiovisual production as well as the diversity of networked communication contexts. The Serralves Foundation with its Museum of Contemporary Art, in Porto, Portugal, was the subject of a fi rst study of an empirical nature: a series of audiovisual objects were developed, in order to generate material for analysis and proposition. In this new stage of the project, our aim is to identify new procedures and practices that may be effectively implemented within the institutional universe. We intend to propose effi cient audiovisual communication contexts, including the maximizing of the relationship between institutions and audiences regarding dimensions that are traditionally outside the institutional radar: identity, narrative and affection. The project is currently in the process of surveying and categorization, with the aim of producing a map of different vocations and positions of the various institutions in regards to the aforementioned issues, which require participatory communication.

Esta dissertação aborda sobre as "Políticas Educacionais e Gestão Escolar nos Anos Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental", na qual avaliamos a implementação da gestão democrática em escolas públicas estaduais, considerando a contribuição do PPP, do Conselho Escolar e do Caixa Escolar nos processos de participação, autonomia e descentralização da gestão escolar, em busca da construção de urna escola democrática. Quanto aos resultados da pesquisa, constatamos que, apesar das ações do Projeto Político-Pedagógico - PPP, do Caixa Escolar e do Conselho Escolar constituírem-se de um mecanismo de acesso à gestão democrática, evidenciam-se eminentes pontos fracos em suas sistemáticas devido à própria estrutura organizacional da política educacional neoliberal, que não conta com as condições curriculares, institucionais e financeiras necessárias para o êxito da gestão democrática escolar. Mediante a pesquisa, podemos entender que a operacionalização da política voltada para a gestão democrática escolar coaduna-se ao ideário da Reforma Educacional dos anos 90, articulada aos interesses neoliberais, que atribuiu à privatização, descentralização, desregulamentação e focalização dos princípios norteadores do sistema público de ensino e que não correspondem completamente aos propósitos de autonomia, participação e descentralização de qualidade social.

Com as várias reformulações do processo de avaliação de desempenho docente (ADD), passou-se de um processo de avaliação dos professores assente na autoavaliação do docente, para um sistema de heteroavaliação que visa a prestação de contas e a seleção, mas também a melhoria de práticas e o desenvolvimento profissional, através do acompanhamento supervisivo. No entanto, a conciliação entre estas duas perspetivas não é fácil e tem gerado perplexidades e inquietações entre os avaliadores e entre os avaliados. Com este estudo, pretendemos conhecer a perspetiva de avaliadores e avaliados sobre o papel que a Supervisão detém no processo de avaliação de desempenho do professor e o seu contributo para o desenvolvimento profissional do professor e melhoria das práticas. Assim desenhou-se um plano de estudo qualitativo, exploratório e descritivo procurando captar o ponto de vista dos principais intervenientes no processo. O principal meio de recolha de dados foi a entrevista semiestruturada a 4 professores avaliadores e 4 professores avaliados do Departamento de Matemática e Ciências Experimentais de um Agrupamento de Escolas. Os resultados mostram que os docentes discordam do modelo de ADD, mas que o processo vivenciado teve caraterísticas positivas, dando os avaliadores especial relevância à oportunidade de conhecer outros processos de trabalho, a partir da observação de aulas. Avaliadores e avaliados referem ainda o bom relacionamento estabelecido entre ambos, contradizendo as preocupações expressas quando se pronunciaram sobre os problemas do modelo de avaliação. No entanto, ambos os subgrupos focam a falta de formação e qualificação profissional dos avaliadores. Em termos gerais, é possível concluir que a maior parte das dificuldades atribuídas pelos docentes ao modelo de ADD não foi depois sentida na implementação prática. Por outro lado, na opinião dos docentes, o processo experienciado não teve verdadeiro impacto na melhoria das práticas ou no desenvolvimento profissional dos docentes envolvidos. - Abstract The several reformulations of the process of the teacher performance evaluation made the process of evaluating teachers, which was first based on a self-evaluation change into a straight assessment system, which aims not only accountability and selection, but also the improvement of the practice and professional development through the supervision of the teaching practice. However, the conciliation between these perspectives has not been easy and has generated anxieties and perplexities among evaluators and evaluated. With this study we intend to know the perspective of the evaluators and of the evaluated concerning the role supervision has hold in the process of evaluating a teacher’s performance and its contribution to the professional development of the teacher and to the improvement of his practices. Thus, a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study plan was drawn to get to know the viewpoint of the intervening ones in the process. The main means for data collection was based on a semi structured interview, targeting 4 teacher evaluators and 4 evaluated teachers of the Experimental Sciences and Mathematics Department of a group of Schools. The results show that teachers disagree with the teacher’s evaluation model, but the experienced process had positive characteristics. Besides, evaluators have given special relevance to the opportunity of getting to know other working methods thanks to the lessons’ observations. Evaluators and evaluated also refer the good relationship between both parts contradicting the fears they had when they first pronounced themselves about this evaluation model. However, both subgroups focus the lack of training and professional qualifications of the evaluators. So it’s possible to conclude that most worries mentioned by the teachers when referring to this model of teacher performance evaluation were not verified during its practical implementation. On the other hand, in the opinion of the involved teachers, the experienced process had no real impact on their practice improvement or on their professional development.

O objectivo deste projecto consiste em analisar o potencial eólico em ambiente edificado urbano, considerando a utilização de turbinas eólicas de eixo vertical para produção de energia nesse contexto. Pretende-se com este documento demonstrar que, embora os estudos sobre as turbinas de eixo vertical sejam ainda reduzidos quando comparados aos das de eixo horizontal, tal não implica que as mesmas não tenham características que, em determinados cenários, sejam superiores às turbinas de eixo horizontal. Para a análise da intensidade de vento em cenário edificado urbano, seleccionou-se como local de estudo desta tese o Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), mais concretamente, o edifício F e o edifício E. Foi escolhido o edifício F, pelo facto de a acessibilidade ao mesmo ser mais fácil e também pelo facto de nesse edifício se ter acesso à parte norte do mesmo, onde os ventos são de intensidade mais forte. O edifício E como já tinha um anemómetro colocado a recolher dados para a estação meteorológica do ISEP foi igualmente objecto de incorporação na tese e utilizado na avaliação geoestatística exemplificativa. Após a extensa recolha de dados nos locais anteriormente mencionados, procedeu-se à análise de diversas turbinas de eixo vertical em termos dos respectivos perfis de produção. De seguida, efectuou-se uma análise estatística e geoestatística de carácter exemplificativo, de modo a caracterizar a intensidade de vento presente na área compreendida entre o edifício E e o edifício F. De forma a finalizar o documento, é apresentada uma conclusão relativa ao potencial eólico para produção de energia eléctrica em ambiente edificado urbano por recurso a turbinas eólicas de eixo vertical.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the exploratory relationship between determinants of health, life satisfaction, locus of control, attitudes and behaviors and health related quality of life in an adult population. METHODS Observational study (analytical and cross-sectional) with a quantitative methodological basis. The sample was composed oy 1,214 inhabitants aged ≥ 35 in 31 civil parishes in the County of Coimbra, Portugal, 2011-2012. An anonymous and voluntary health survey was conducted, which collected the following information: demographic, clinical record, health and lifestyle behaviors; health related quality of life (Medical Outcomes Study, Short Form-36); health locus of control; survey of health attitudes and behavior, and quality of life index. Pearson’s Linear Correlation, t-Student, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney; One-way ANOVA; Brown-Forsythe’s F; Kruskal-Wallis; Multiple Comparisons: Tukey (HSD), Games-Howell and Conover were used in the statistical analysis. RESULTS Health related quality of life was shown to be lower in females, in older age groups, in obese/overweight individuals, widows, unassisted, those living alone, living in rural/suburban areas, those who did not work and with a medium-low socioeconomic level. Respondents with poor/very poor self-perceived health (p < 0.0001), with chronic disease (p < 0.0001), who consumed < 3 meals per day (p ≤ 0.01), who were sedentary, who slept ≤ 6 h/day and had smoked for several years revealed the worst health results. Health related quality of life was positively related with a bigger internal locus, with better health attitudes and behaviors (physical exercise, health and nutritional care, length of dependence) and with different areas of life satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS Better health related quality of life was associated with certain social, psychological, family and health characteristics, a satisfactory lifestyle, better socioeconomic conditions and a good internal locus of control over health attitudes and behaviors.
