A general transition criterion is proposed in order to locate the core-annular flow pattern in horizontal and vertical oil-water flows. It is based on a rigorous one-dimensional two-fluid model of liquid-liquid two-phase flow and considers the existence of critical interfacial wave numbers related to a non-negligible interfacial tension term to which the linear stability theory still applies. The viscous laminar-laminar flow problem is fully resolved and turbulence effects on the stability are analyzed through experimentally obtained shape factors. The proposed general transition criterion includes in its formulation the inviscid Kelvin-Helmholtz`s discriminator. If a theoretical maximum wavelength is considered as a necessary condition for stability, a stability criterion in terms of the Eotvos number is achieved. Effects of interfacial tension, viscosity ratio, density difference, and shape factors on the stability of core-annular flow are analyzed in detail. The more complete modeling allowed for the analysis of the neutral-stability wave number and the results strongly suggest that the interfacial tension term plays an indispensable role in the correct prediction of the stable region of core-annular flow pattern. The incorporation of a theoretical minimum wavelength into the transition model produced significantly better results. The criterion predictions were compared with recent data from the literature and the agreement is encouraging. (C) 2007 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Hybrid active-passive damping treatments combine the reliability, low cost and robustness of viscoelastic damping treatments and the high-performance, modal selective and adaptive piezoelectric active control. Numerous hybrid damping treatments have been reported in the literature. They differ mainly by the relative positions of viscoelastic treatments, sensors and piezoelectric actuators. In this work we present an experimental analysis of three active-passive damping design configurations applied to a cantilever beam. In particular, two design configurations based on the extension mode of piezoelectric actuators combined with viscoelastic constrained layer damping treatments and one design configuration with shear piezoelectric actuators embedded in a sandwich beam with viscoelastic core are analyzed. For comparison purposes, a purely active design configuration with an extension piezoelectric actuator bonded to an elastic beam is also analyzed. The active-passive damping performance of the four design configurations is compared. Results show that active-passive design configurations provide more reliable and wider-range damping performance than the purely active configuration.

This paper deals with analysis of multiple random crack propagation in two-dimensional domains using the boundary element method (BEM). BEM is known to be a robust and accurate numerical technique for analysing this type of problem. The formulation adopted in this work is based on the dual BEM, for which singular and hyper-singular integral equations are used. We propose an iterative scheme to predict the crack growth path and the crack length increment at each time step. The proposed scheme able us to simulate localisation and coalescence phenomena, which is the main contribution of this paper. Considering the fracture mechanics analysis, the displacement correlation technique is applied to evaluate the stress intensity factors. The propagation angle and the equivalent stress intensity factor are calculated using the theory of maximum circumferential stress. Examples of simple and multi-fractured domains, loaded up to the rupture, are considered to illustrate the applicability of the proposed scheme. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a physical non-linear formulation to deal with steel fiber reinforced concrete by the finite element method. The proposed formulation allows the consideration of short or long fibers placed arbitrarily inside a continuum domain (matrix). The most important feature of the formulation is that no additional degree of freedom is introduced in the pre-existent finite element numerical system to consider any distribution or quantity of fiber inclusions. In other words, the size of the system of equations used to solve a non-reinforced medium is the same as the one used to solve the reinforced counterpart. Another important characteristic of the formulation is the reduced work required by the user to introduce reinforcements, avoiding ""rebar"" elements, node by node geometrical definitions or even complex mesh generation. Bounded connection between long fibers and continuum is considered, for short fibers a simplified approach is proposed to consider splitting. Non-associative plasticity is adopted for the continuum and one dimensional plasticity is adopted to model fibers. Examples are presented in order to show the capabilities of the formulation.

This paper deals with the application of the lumped dissipation model in the analysis of reinforced concrete structures, emphasizing the nonlinear behaviour of the materials The presented model is based on the original models developed by Cipollina and Florez-Lopez (1995) [12]. Florez-Lopez (1995) [13] and Picon and Florez-Lopez (2000) [14] However, some modifications were introduced in the functions that control the damage evolution in order to improve the results obtained. The efficiency of the new approach is evaluated by means of a comparison with experimental results on reinforced concrete structures such as simply supported beams, plane frames and beam-to-column connections Finally, the adequacy of the numerical model representing the global behaviour of framed structures is investigated and the limits of the analysis are discussed (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

In this paper a new boundary element method formulation for elastoplastic analysis of plates with geometrical nonlinearities is presented. The von Mises criterion with linear isotropic hardening is considered to evaluate the plastic zone. Large deflections are assumed but within the context of small strain. To derive the boundary integral equations the von Karman`s hypothesis is taken into account. An initial stress field is applied to correct the true stresses according to the adopted criterion. Isoparametric linear elements are used to approximate the boundary unknown values while triangular internal cells with linear shape function are adopted to evaluate the domain value influences. The nonlinear system of equations is solved by using an implicit scheme together with the consistent tangent operator derived along the paper. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and the validity of the proposed formulation.

This paper presents a study of a specific type of beam-to-column connection for precast concrete structures. Furthermore, an analytical model to determine the strength and the stiffness of the connection, based on test results of two prototypes, is proposed. To evaluate the influence of the strength and stiffness of the connection on the behaviour of the structure, the results of numerical simulations of a typical multi-storey building with semi-rigid connections are also presented and compared with the results using pinned and rigid connections. The main conclusions are: (a) the proposed design model can reasonably evaluate the studied connection strength; (b) the evaluation of strength is more accurate than that of stiffness; (c) for a typical structure, it is possible to increase the number of storeys of the structure from two to four with lower horizontal displacement at the top, and only a small increase of the column base bending moment by replacing the pinned connections with semi-rigid ones; and (d) although there is significant uncertainty in the connection stiffness, the results show that the displacements at the top of the structure, and the column base moments present low susceptibility deviations to this parameter.

Due to manufacturing or damage process, brittle materials present a large number of micro-cracks which are randomly distributed. The lifetime of these materials is governed by crack propagation under the applied mechanical and thermal loadings. In order to deal with these kinds of materials, the present work develops a boundary element method (BEM) model allowing for the analysis of multiple random crack propagation in plane structures. The adopted formulation is based on the dual BEM, for which singular and hyper-singular integral equations are used. An iterative scheme to predict the crack growth path and crack length increment is proposed. This scheme enables us to simulate the localization and coalescence phenomena, which are the main contribution of this paper. Considering the fracture mechanics approach, the displacement correlation technique is applied to evaluate the stress intensity factors. The propagation angle and the equivalent stress intensity factor are calculated using the theory of maximum circumferential stress. Examples of multi-fractured domains, loaded up to rupture, are considered to illustrate the applicability of the proposed method. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a theoretical and experimental analysis of socket base connections of precast concrete structures with regard to the behavior of transverse walls. The experimental program included seven specimens, for which the type of interface in contact with cast-in-place concrete, the load eccentricities and the embedded lengths were all varied, A design model was proposed to calculate the reinforcements of the transverse walls. Based on the obtained results, some conclusions can be drawn: (a) The top of the transverse wall on the compression side of the smooth connections and the top of the two transverse walls of the rough connections are submitted to a bending-tension and this tension prevails on the bending; (b) The design model proposed for the calculation of the reinforcement of the transverse wall on the compression side provides the best prediction of the experimental results for all specimens when compared to the current design models; (c) For rough interfaces, the top of the transverse wall on the tension side is more requested than the top of transverse wall on the compression side; (d) The results of the proposed design model for the reinforcement of the transverse wall on the tension side of rough connections were in close agreement with the experimental results. The Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) is employed in this paper for the numerical analysis of three-dimensional solids tinder nonlinear behavior. A brief summary of the GFEM as well as a description of the formulation of the hexahedral element based oil the proposed enrichment strategy are initially presented. Next, in order to introduce the nonlinear analysis of solids, two constitutive models are briefly reviewed: Lemaitre`s model, in which damage and plasticity are coupled, and Mazars`s damage model suitable for concrete tinder increased loading. Both models are employed in the framework of a nonlocal approach to ensure solution objectivity. In the numerical analyses carried out, a selective enrichment of approximation at regions of concern in the domain (mainly those with high strain and damage gradients) is exploited. Such a possibility makes the three-dimensional analysis less expensive and practicable since re-meshing resources, characteristic of h-adaptivity, can be minimized. Moreover, a combination of three-dimensional analysis and the selective enrichment presents a valuable good tool for a better description of both damage and plastic strain scatterings.

In this paper, a formulation for representation of stiffeners in plane stress by the boundary elements method (BEM) in linear analysis is presented. The strategy is to adopt approximations for the displacements in the central line of the stiffener. With this simplification the Spurious oscillations in the stress along stiffeners with small thickness is prevented. Worked examples are analyzed to show the efficiency of these techniques, especially in the insertion of very narrow sub-regions, in which quasi-singular integrals are calculated, with stiffeners that are much stiffer than the main domain. The results obtained with this formulation are very close to those obtained with other formulations. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A way of coupling digital image correlation (to measure displacement fields) and boundary element method (to compute displacements and tractions along a crack surface) is presented herein. It allows for the identification of Young`s modulus and fracture parameters associated with a cohesive model. This procedure is illustrated to analyze the latter for an ordinary concrete in a three-point bend test on a notched beam. In view of measurement uncertainties, the results are deemed trustworthy thanks to the fact that numerous measurement points are accessible and used as entries to the identification procedure. Artificial neural networks have been used to analyze a number of engineering problems, including settlement caused by different tunneling methods in various types of ground mass. This paper focuses on settlement over shotcrete- supported tunnels on Sao Paulo subway line 2 (West Extension) that were excavated in Tertiary sediments using the sequential excavation method. The adjusted network is a good tool for predicting settlement above new tunnels to be excavated in similar conditions. The influence of network training parameters on the quality of results is also discussed. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The inclined plane test (IPT) is commonly performed to measure the interface shear strength between different materials as those used in cover systems of landfills. The test, when interpreted according to European test Standards provides the static interface friction angle, usually assumed for 50 mm displacement and denoted as phi(stat)(50). However, if interpreted considering the several phases of the sliding process, the test is capable of yielding more realistic information about the interface shear strength such as differentiating interfaces which exhibit the same value of phi(stat)(50) but different behavior for displacement less than 50 mm. In this paper, the IPT is used to evaluate the interface shear strength of some materials usually present in cover liner systems of landfill. The results of the tests were analyzed for both, the static and the dynamic phases of the sliding and were interpreted based on the static initial friction angle, phi(0), and the limit friction angle, phi(lim). It is shown that depending on the sliding behavior of the interfaces, phi(stat)(50), which is usually adopted as the designing parameter in stability analysis, can be larger than phi(0) and phi(lim). The development of efficient programs of incentive to voluntary conservation in private lands require an extensive knowledge on the motivations of land owners for conservation and their degree of acceptance on the benefits offered. Thus, this paper intended to evaluate the motivations for the establishment of PNHRs, the difficulties faced by their recognition and the incentives received for their establishment and management in Mato Grosso do Sul, and also to discuss some possibilities of widening the benefits offered. To this end, people responsible for 34 PNHRs were interviewed between March/2008 and March/2009. The results show that conservation is among the main reasons for the creation of these areas, in spite of economical and personal factors also being mentioned. The slowness and the red tape during the process of recognition were also emphasized as problems; on the other hand, several PNHRs received or receive support for their creation or management. Finally, some considerations are made on the benefits offered to owners of PNHRs and their possibilities of widening throughout the state.
