Evaluation of semen characteristics of the species Mazama americana in captivity

In recent years the concept of genomic resource banks has grown as a way of maintaining the genetic variability of populations, while the quality of cryopreservation of the gametes determines the effectiveness of such banks. However, the absence of basic knowledge regarding the physiology of species and their semen characteristics hampers the establishment of reproductive biotechnologies. Thus, this paper aimed to determine certain physicochemical (volume, colour, appearance, pH and osmolarity) and microscopic characteristics (mass movement, motility, vigour, concentration, and sperm morphology and morphometry) of semen of the species Mazama americana. To achieve this, five males of the species were used, and three semen samples per buck (electroejaculation) were collected at intervals of 2 weeks. The volume, pH and osmolarity of the ejaculate were 0.39 ± 0.14 mL, 6.90 ± 0.74 and 297.74 ± 19.10 mOsm/kg, respectively, while the values obtained for mass movement, motility, vigour and concentration were 3.33 ± 0.82; 69.6 ± 8.92%; 3.53 ± 0.50, and 244.07 ± 98.65 × 107/mL, respectively. Regarding the colour of the ejaculate, five samples were classified as ivory, two as yellowish, two as whitish and six as white. Regarding appearance, seven samples were considered creamy and eight, milky. Morphology was analysed in a humid chamber under phase contrast microscopy and 73.50 ± 5.57% of cells presented normal morphology, 8.37 ± 3.15% presented major defects and 18.13 ± 6.46% presented minor defects. To determine sperm morphometry, an optical microscope (Leica DM 5000B) and the Leica Qwin image analyser program were used, resulting in 8.09 ± 0.40, 4.65 ± 0.30, 2.81 ± 0.44 and 30.25 ± 3.02 m for length, largest width, smallest width and area, respectively. Loucura, saúde mental e reforma psiquiátrica são os temas centrais em questão neste livro, escrito em formato de ensaio-fílmico e dividido em três partes principais - pré-produção, produção e pós-produção, etapas da realização cinematográfica. O ensaio-fílmico é formado pela montagem de cenas obtidas a partir de algumas sessões de cinema e de produções de usuários de saúde mental do Centro de Atenção Psicossocial (Caps I) do município paulista de Santa Gertrudes. Mas diferentemente do cinema tradicional, no qual enredos, personagens e narrativas são lineares e previstos, no ensaio-fílmico proposto pelo autor esses elementos foram se concretizando ao longo do processo de pesquisa, de acordo com os acontecimentos que se sucediam nos encontros do pesquisador com os usuários e a coordenação do serviço do Caps. Os miniensaios que formam os chamados planos-fragmentos são constituídos por reflexões do autor acerca de conceitos relacionados a controle, loucura e saúde mental. Aqui, a discussão tem como suporte ideias de pensadores, como os franceses Felix Guattari, Giles Deleuze e Michel Foucault, assim como músicas, imagens e trechos de filmes em uma perspectiva de transversalidade e subversão à lógica de compartimentalização dos saberes e fazeres cinematográfico e do meio científico

This work deals with the development of a switched-mode power supply circuit based on a Buck topology converter with a Boost Rectifier One-Cycle Control with Power Factor Correction developing, thus, a source of direct current for a module of 50 power LEDs that will be used in a lamp for public street lightning. It is presented, at first, some aspects about the most common technologies used in lamps of public street lightning in Brazil and a comparison with the White LED high power, which is the one that presents itself as the most promising among the existing market. Then it is presented the detailed development of the static converter switched PWM, consisting of a Boost rectifier with power factor correction and methodology of control One-Cycle Control associated with a Buck converter controlled by a PI method that operates as a direct current source . At the end of the simulation results of the circuit through the PSIM software are presented to verify the design behavior

The purpose of this presentation is to gain new perspectives on pest control and related phenomena. Some will call it “blue sky.” I would claim it informal futuristics. Systems men call such efforts feedforward; others grandify it with “prognostics.” Some say prognostics is one of the leading challenges of the day. We must anticipate future developments and imagine or invent new alternatives as a background for rational choice. The activity can influence today’s decisions, modify our concepts of risks and probable payoffs, and can help those of us who ask: “What am I really doing; what should I be doing?”
