In recent years, several phenomenological dynamical models have been formulated that describe how perceptual variables are incorporated in the control of motor variables. We call these short-route models as they do not address how perception-action patterns might be constrained by the dynamical properties of the sensory, neural and musculoskeletal subsystems of the human action system. As an alternative, we advocate a long-route modelling approach in which the dynamics of these subsystems are explicitly addressed and integrated to reproduce interceptive actions. The approach is exemplified through a discussion of a recently developed model for interceptive actions consisting of a neural network architecture for the online generation of motor outflow commands, based on time-to-contact information and information about the relative positions and velocities of hand and ball. This network is shown to be consistent with both behavioural and neurophysiological data. Finally, some problems are discussed with regard to the question of how the motor outflow commands (i.e. the intended movement) might be modulated in view of the musculoskeletal dynamics.

We report the combined studies of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical in situ FTIR spectroscopy on surface oxidants and mechanisms of CO oxidation at the Ru(0001) electrodes. It is shown that CO can co-adsorb with both O and OH species at lower potential region where a low coverage of the (2 x 2)-O/OH adlayer formed; the oxidation of CO adsorbates takes place at higher potentials where a high coverage of the (1 x 1)-O/OH adlayer formed. Surface O species are not the active oxidants under all coverages studied, due to the high reaction barriers between CO and O (>1 eV). However, surface OH species with higher coverage are identified as the active oxidants, and CO oxidation takes place via a two-steps' mechanism of CO + 3OH -> COOH + 2OH -> CO2 + H2O + OH, in which three nearby OH species are involved in the CO2 formation: CO reacts with OH, forming COOH; COOH then transfers the H to a nearby OH to form H2O and CO2, at the same time, another H in the H2O transfers to a nearby OH to form a weak adsorbed H2O and a new OH. The reaction barrier of these processes is reduced significantly to around 0.50 eV. These new results not only provide an insight into surface active oxidants on Ru, which is directly relevant to fuel cell catalysis, but also reveals the extra complexity of catalytic reactions taking place at solid/liquid electrochemical interface in comparison to the relatively simpler ones at solid/gas phase.

The spatial distributions of marine fauna and of pollution are both highly structured, and thus the resulting high levels of autocorrelation may invalidate conclusions based on classical statistical approaches. Here we analyse the close correlation observed between proxies for the disturbance associated with gas extraction activities and amphipod distribution patterns around four hydrocarbon platforms. We quantified the amount of variation independently accounted for by natural environmental variables, proxies for the disturbance caused by platforms, and spatial autocorrelation. This allowed us to demonstrate how each of these three factors significantly affects the community structure of amphipods. Sophisticated statistical techniques are required when taking into account spatial autocorrelation: nevertheless our data demonstrate that this approach not only enables the formulation of robust statistical inferences but also provides a much deeper understanding of the subtle interactions between human disturbance and natural factors affecting the structure of marine invertebrates communities. The temporal analysis of products (TAP) technique was successfully applied for the first time to investigate the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction over a 2% Pt/CeO2 catalyst. The adsorption/desorption rate constants for CO2 and H-2 were determined in separate TAP pulse-response experiments, and the number of H-containing exchangeable species was determined using D-2 multipulse TAP experiments. This number is similar to the amount of active sites observed in previous SSITKA experiments. The CO production in the RWGS reaction was studied in a TAP experiment using separate (sequential) and simultaneous pulsing Of CO2 and H-2. A small yield of CO was observed when CO2 was pulsed alone over the reduced catalyst, whereas a much higher CO yield was observed when CO2 and H-2 were pulsed consecutively. The maximum CO yield was observed when the CO2 pulse was followed by a H-2 pulse with only a short (1 s) delay. Based on these findings, we conclude that an associative reaction mechanism dominates the RWGS reaction under these experimental conditions. The rate constants for several elementary steps can be determined from the TAP data. In addition, using a difference in the time scale of the separate reaction steps identified in the TAP experiments, it is possible to distinguish a number of possible reaction pathways. This paper reports the first observation, using in situ FTIR spectroscopy, of the oxidation of CO adsorbates on the Ru(0001) electrode to CO under open circuit (oc) conditions in both perchloric acid and sulphuric acid solution at 20 and 55 °C. While the significant oc oxidation of the adsorbed CO on the Ru(0001) electrode was observed in perchloric acid solution, much less oc oxidation took place in sulfuric acid solution due to the specific adsorption of bisulfate at the Ru surface which inhibits the surface oxidation and reduces the reactivity of the surface towards the oxidation of CO . The oc oxidation of the CO depends strongly on the oxygen concentration in the solution and the temperature. The data so obtained are compared to those observed at the gas|solid interface, as well as to those obtained from the electro-oxidation of CO , and possible new catalytic oxidation reaction mechanisms are discussed. In addition, it is shown that the C-O frequency of the adsorbed CO may be used as an effective probe of the open circuit potential. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The close proximity of short-period hot-Jupiters to their parent star means they are subject to extreme tidal forces. This has a profound effect on their structure and, as a result, density measurements that assume that the planet is spherical can be incorrect. We have simulated the tidally distorted surface for 34 known short-period hot-Jupiters, assuming surfaces of constant gravitational equipotential for the planet, and the resulting densities have been calculated based only on observed parameters of the exoplanet systems. Comparing these results to the density values, assuming the planets are spherical, shows that there is an appreciable change in the measured density for planets with very short periods (typically less than two days). For one of the shortest-period systems, WASP-19b, we determine a decrease in bulk density of 12% from the spherical case and, for the majority of systems in this study, this value is in the range of 1%-5%. On the other hand, we also find cases where the distortion is negligible (relative to the measurement errors on the planetary parameters) even in the cases of some very short period systems, depending on the mass ratio and planetary radius. For high-density gas planets requiring apparently anomalously large core masses, density corrections due to tidal deformation could become important for the shortest-period systems.

Although pumped hydro storage is seen as a strategic key asset by grid operators, financing it is complicated in new liberalised markets. It could be argued that the optimum generation portfolio is now determined by the economic viability of generators based on a short to medium term return on investment. This has meant that capital intensive projects such as pumped hydro storage are less attractive for wholesale electricity companies because the payback periods are too long. In tandem a significant amount of wind power has entered the generation mix, which has resulted in operating and planning integration issues due to wind's inherent uncertain, varying spatial and temporal nature. These integration issues can be overcome using fast acting gas peaking plant or energy storage. Most analysis of wind power integration using storage to date has used stochastic optimisation for power system balancing or arbitrage modelling to examine techno-economic viability. In this research a deterministic dynamic programming long term generation expansion model is employed to optimise the generation mix, total system costs and total carbon dioxide emissions, and unlike other studies calculates reserve to firm wind power. The key finding of this study is that the incentive to build capital-intensive pumped hydro storage to firm wind power is limited unless exogenous market costs come very strongly into play. Furthermore it was demonstrated that reserve increases with increasing wind power showing the importance of ancillary services in future power systems. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a novel analysis of the utilisation of small grid scale energy storage to mitigate negative system operational impacts due to high penetrations of wind power. This was investigated by artificially lowering the minimum stable generation level of a gas thermal generating unit coupled to a storage device over a five hour storage charging window using a unit commitment and economic dispatch model. The key findings of the analysis were a 0.18% reduction in wind curtailment, a 2.35 MW/min reduction in the ramping rate required to be met by all generators in the test system during a representative period and a total generation cost reduction of €6.5 million.

Increasing installed capacities of wind power in an effort to achieve sustainable power systems for future generations pose problems for system operators. Volatility in generation volumes due to the adoption of stochastic wind power is increasing. Storage has been shown to act as a buffer for these stochastic energy sources, facilitating the integration of renewable energy into a historically inflexible power system. This paper examines peak and off peak benefits realised by installing a short term discharge storage unit in a system with a high penetration of wind power in 2020. A fully representative unit commitment and economic dispatch model is used to analyse two scenarios, one ‘with storage’ and one ‘without storage’. Key findings of this preliminary study show that wind curtailment can be reduced in the storage scenario, with a larger reduction in peak time ramping of gas generators is realised.

RATIONALE: Anaerobic bacteria are present in large numbers in the airways of people with cystic fibrosis (PWCF). In the gut, anaerobes produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that modulate immune/inflammatory processes.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the capacity of anaerobes to contribute to CF airway pathogenesis via SCFAs.
METHODS: Samples from 109 PWCF were processed using anaerobic microbiological culture with bacteria present identified by 16S RNA sequencing. SCFAs levels in anaerobe supernatants and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were determined by gas chromatography. The mRNA and/or protein expression of SCFAs receptors, GPR41 and GPR43, in CF and non-CF bronchial brushings, and 16HBE14o- and CFBE41o- cells were evaluated using RT-PCR, western blot, laser scanning cytometry and confocal microscopy. SCFAs-induced IL-8 secretion was monitored by ELISA.
MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Fifty seven of 109 (52.3%) PWCF were anaerobe-positive. Prevalence increased with age, from 33.3% to 57.7% in PWCF under (n=24) and over 6 years (n=85). All evaluated anaerobes produced millimolar concentrations of SCFAs, including acetic, propionic and butyric acid. SCFAs levels were higher in BAL samples from adults than children. GPR41 levels were elevated in; CFBE41o- versus 16HBE14o- cells; CF versus non-CF bronchial brushings; 16HBE14o- cells after treatment with CFTR inhibitor CFTR(inh)-172, CF BAL, or inducers of endoplasmic reticulum stress. SCFAs induced a dose-dependent and pertussis toxin-sensitive IL-8 response in bronchial epithelial cells with a higher production of IL-8 in CFBE41o- than 16HBE14o- cells.
CONCLUSIONS: This study illustrates that SCFAs contribute to excessive production of IL-8 in CF airways colonized with anaerobes via upregulated GPR41.

Quasi-phase matching (QPM) can be used to increase the conversion efficiency of the high harmonic generation (HHG) process. We observed QPM with an improved dual-gas foil target with a 1 kHz, 10 mJ, 30 fs laser system. Phase tuning and enhancement were possible within a spectral range from 17 nm to 30 nm. Furthermore analytical calculations and numerical simulations were carried out to distinguish QPM from other effects, such as the influence of adjacent jets on each other or the laser gas interaction. The simulations were performed with a 3 dimensional code to investigate the phase matching of the short and long trajectories individually over a large spectral range.

An evaluation of existing 1-D vaneless diffuser design tools in the context of improving the off-design performance prediction of automotive turbocharger centrifugal compressors is described. A combination of extensive gas stand test data and single passage CFD simulations have been employed in order to permit evaluation of the different methods, allowing conclusions about the relative benefits and deficiencies of each of the different approaches to be determined. The vaneless diffuser itself has been isolated from the incumbent limitations in the accuracy of 1-D impeller modelling tools through development of a method to fully specify impeller exit conditions (in terms of mean quantities) using only standard test stand data with additional interstage static pressure measurements at the entrance to the diffuser. This method allowed a direct comparison between the test data and 1-D methods through sharing common inputs, thus achieving the aim of diffuser isolation.
Crucial to the accuracy of determining the performance of each of the vaneless diffuser configurations was the ability to quantify the presence and extent of the spanwise aerodynamic blockage present at the diffuser inlet section. A method to evaluate this critical parameter using CFD data is described herein, along with a correlation for blockage related to a new diffuser inlet flow parameter ⚡, equal to the quotient of the local flow coefficient and impeller tip speed Mach number. The resulting correlation permitted the variation of blockage with operating condition to be captured.
Modelling of Evaporator in Waste Heat Recovery System using Finite Volume Method and Fuzzy Technique
Resumo:
The evaporator is an important component in the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)-based Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system since the effective heat transfer of this device reflects on the efficiency of the system. When the WHR system operates under supercritical conditions, the heat transfer mechanism in the evaporator is unpredictable due to the change of thermo-physical properties of the fluid with temperature. Although the conventional finite volume model can successfully capture those changes in the evaporator of the WHR process, the computation time for this method is high. To reduce the computation time, this paper develops a new fuzzy based evaporator model and compares its performance with the finite volume method. The results show that the fuzzy technique can be applied to predict the output of the supercritical evaporator in the waste heat recovery system and can significantly reduce the required computation time. The proposed model, therefore, has the potential to be used in real time control applications.
