Caranguejeiros e caranguejos: a captura do caranguejo-uçá, Ucides cordatus (LINNAEUS, 1763) (Crustacea, Ucididae), no município de Canaéia (SP)

A captura do caranguejo-uçá (U. cordatus) constitui uma das principais fontes de alimento e renda para muitas comunidades litorâneas, sendo considerada uma das atividades extrativistas estuarinas mais antigas no Brasil. O Município de Cananéia (SP) faz parte da Área de Proteção Ambiental de Cananéia-Iguape-Peruíbe (APA/CIP), possuindo 72 km² de manguezais, que a partir de 1990 passaram a receber uma maior pressão de explotação dessa espécie pela introdução da “redinha”, um petrecho de pesca proibido por lei nas regiões sudeste-sul brasileiras (Portaria IBAMA nº 52/2003). O presente estudo visa avaliar a produção do recurso caranguejo-uçá em Cananéia (SP), identificando seu padrão explotatório recente, com vistas à sustentabilidade futura das capturas. Na avaliação foram utilizadas planilhas de dados disponibilizadas pelo Instituto de Pesca (APTA/SAA-SP), referentes aos anos de 2009 e 2010, além do acompanhamento de uma das rotinas de coleta, com realização de biometria dos caranguejos capturados. Os dados evidenciam que o uso da “redinha” apresenta falha de recolhimento de 3,6%, num total de 86,4% de produtividade, que permanecem nos manguezais, podendo (ou não) ser recolhidas por outro catador. Os dados das planilhas do IP/APTA/SAA-SP foram avaliados segundo o modelo linear generalizado (GLM), com base em seis variáveis (unidade produtiva, mês de captura, ano, fase lunar, setor produtivo e período reprodutivo da espécie), das quais o conhecimento empírico dos catadores, ano da pescaria e o setor produtivo, foram as variáveis que mais influenciaram as mudanças observadas na captura por unidade de esforço (CPUE) da espécie. Além disso, foram verificadas produtividades diferenciadas na extração de caranguejos entre os cinco setores estabelecidos, que caracterizam o Estuário de Cananéia nos dois anos analisados. The Martha Thomas Fitzgerald Papers consist of biographical data, correspondence, minutes, newspaper clippings, memoranda, reports, and photographs (of particular interest are the many photographs of rural S.C. school houses in the 1920s). The collection pertains to Mrs. Fitzgerald’s work with the South Carolina Department of Education, the South Carolina House of Representatives, and her work with various civic organizations such as the Altrusa Club, the League of Women Voters, the Daughters of American Colonists, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPW), Delta Kappa Gamma, South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation, and the Salvation Army. There is also information on the Status of Women Commission Council on Aging, agriculture, Queens College, University of South Carolina, Winthrop University, Columbia University, public health, South Carolina history, City of Columbia, South Carolina, and Richland County, South Carolina. Correspondents include Strom Thurmond and three letters from John F. Kennedy when he was senator. Mrs. Fitzgerald was the first woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in a general election.

Dr. Edward (Ted) Elliot Eulogy

Kathy and Susie, members of the faculty, and staff of the School of Natural Resource Sciences, ladies and gentlemen. There are some things in this world that, try as we may, just cannot be adequately accomplished. One of those things, for me at least, is to express adequately what I feel about the passing of Dr. Edward (Ted) Elliot. Ted came to this University of Nebraska a few months before I arrived, and it was my distinct honor to count him among my friends at this great University. Ted was a man of exceptional scientific standing and wisdom, and his loss leaves a void in all of our lives that will not be readily filled.

Review of: Solving the Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls: New Light on the Bible, by Edward M. Cook

Edward M. Cook's new book makes an excellent addition to the growing list of "introductions" to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Aimed primarily at a Christian lay and clerical audience, it succeeds admirably in leading its readers through the labyrinthine world of Scroll scholarship and controversy. The book divides itself into two uneven parts. In the first part, chapters 1-4, Cook deals with the discovery of the Scrolls in 1947 and the subsequent history of their decipherment and (often delayed) publication. Cook's treatment of this controversial topic is the most fair and evenhanded I have ever read; he has done meticulous research, reading many accounts of the Scrolls, from Edmund Wilson's in the 1950's to the latest journal articles from 1993. The result is a highly readable account of the finding and purchase of the Scrolls, the appointment of an international team of scholars to decipher and publish them, the delays in publication (including the results of the Six Day War in 1967, when most of the Scroll fragments fell into Israeli hands), and the controversy surrounding then editor-in-chief John Strugnell and the release of the photographs in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Cook is objective and fair throughout, but particularly striking is his sympathetic portrayal of the original seven member editorial team.
