A evolução da temática biblioteca virtual e biblioteca digital como assunto de artigos de periódicos brasileiros publicados de 1995 a 2000 é o objetivo deste trabalho. Analisa 33 artigos apresentando os aspectos metodológicos adotados para o planejamento e criação de bibliotecas virtuais e digitais, o desenvolvimento de coleções diante dessa nova realidade, o impacto causado nas unidades de informação e nos profissionais da informação, as estatísticas das bibliotecas na Internet e programas institucionais, além da produção bibliográfica sobre bibliotecas virtuais e digitais. Avalia a produção no período, a produtividade dos autores e tipo de autoria, número de referências bibliográficas por artigo, tipo de documentos e o idioma dos documentos citados. Aponta, como resultados, que não há convergência sobre o conceito de biblioteca eletrônica, polimídia, digital e virtual e, para a preocupação dos autores, centrados nos aspectos metodológicos visando à implantação de bibliotecas digitais e virtuais.

En este trabajo se presenta el análisis de los datos de temperatura, radiación global, radiación difusa y humedad relativa, simultáneos, registrados en la isla Livingston durante las campañas de verano de 1994-95 y 1995-96. Los datos corresponden a dos estaciones, una instalada en la Base Antártica Española Juan Carlos I y otra instalada sobre el Glaciar Johnsons. Se ha establecido la correlación de las variables medidas en la Base con las obtenidas en el glaciar. A su vez, los resultados obtenidos permiten calcular por regresión los correspondientes al glaciar, en las campañas donde no se obtuvieron datos in situ. También, se caracterizan las evoluciones medias diarias de la temperatura, radiación y humedad mediante modelos periódicos. Por último se estudian la relación de la temperatura y nubosidad con respecto a la velocidad y dirección del viento. Algunos de los resultados obtenidos se han comparado con éxito con los obtenidos a partir de los registros de la base antrática de Bellingshausen.

Este artigo analisou os depósitos das universidades públicas paulistas no Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial (Inpi) no período de 1995-2006, perfazendo 672 registros. Foram consideradas as seguintes: Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Universidade de São Paulo, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Universidade Federal de São Carlos e Universidade Federal de São Paulo. Com os resultados obtidos verificou-se um avanço, mesmo que instável, do número de depósitos de patentes advindas das universidades e o adiantamento da Unicamp em relação às demais na quantidade de patentes depositadas, responsável por 60% do total de registros. Como conclusão vale destacar que o fortalecimento das políticas internas das universidades relacionadas à propriedade industrial acarretará maior índice de proteção das invenções acadêmicas, garantindo os direitos sobre a invenção, incentivando a realização de novas pesquisas e, através de mecanismos efetivos, viabilizando a transferência da tecnologia produzida nas universidades para o setor produtivo.

This report presents the results of potential-scour assessments at 130 bridges and estimates of maximum scour at 10 bridges, in Iowa. All of the bridges evaluated in the study are constructed bridges (not culverts) that are sites of active or discontinued streamflow-gaging stations and peak-stage measurement sites. The period of the study was from October 1991 to September 1994. The potential-scour assessments were made using a potential-scour index developed by the U.S. Geological Survey for a study in Tennessee. Higher values of the index suggest a greater likelihood of scour-related problems occurring at a bridge. The estimates of maximum scour were made using scour equations recommended by the Federal Highway Administration. In this study, the long term aggradation or degradation that occurred during the period of streamflow data collection at each site was evaluated. Although the abutment-scour equation predicted deep scour holes at many of the sites, the only significant abutment scour that was measured was erosion of the embankment at the left abutment at one bridge after a flood.

The objective of phase one of this research was to assess the degree to which currently employed Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) employees would be affected by a more aggressive policy to recruit and retain women and minority engineers. The DOT's "Future Agenda" was used as a baseline to focus on efforts to update and implement a recruitment plan that would target underrepresented classes. The primary question that emerged out of phase one was how could the Iowa DOT strengthen its ties with Iowa State University (ISU) to produce increased numbers of in-state applicants for engineering positions. This introduced the objective of phase two, which was to identify problem areas resulting in unacceptably high attrition rates for women, minorities, and to a lesser degree, Caucasian men in the College of Engineering at ISU, particularly Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE). Past research has focused on (1) projected shortages of qualified civil engineers, (2) the obstacles confronting women in a traditionally male-oriented profession, and (3) minorities who are often unprepared to succeed in the rigors of an engineering curriculum because of a lack of academic preparedness. The researchers in this study, in contrast, chose to emphasize institutional reasons why women, minorities, and some Caucasian men often feel a sense of isolation in the engineering program. It was found that one of the key obstacles to student retention is the lack of visibility of the civil engineering profession. The visibility problem led to the hypothesis that many engineering students do not have a clear conception of what the practice of civil engineering entails. It was found that this may be a better predictor of attrition than the stereotypical assumption that a majority of students leave their engineering programs because they are not academically able to compete. Recommendations are offered to strengthen the ties between ISU's Department of CCE and the Iowa DOT in order to counter the visibility issue. It was concluded that this is a vital step because over the next 5-15 years 40% of DOT engineers currently employed will be phasing into retirement. If the DOT expects to draw sufficient numbers of engineers from within the state of Iowa and if increasing numbers of them are to be women and minorities, a university connection will help to produce the qualified applicants to fulfill this need.

Iowa's secondary road network contains nearly 15,000 bridges which are less than 12 m (40 ft) long. Many of these bridges were built several decades ago and need to be replaced. Box culvert construction has proven to be an adequate bridge replacement technique. An alternative to box culverts is the Air-O-Form method of arch culvert construction. The Air-O-Form method has several potential advantages over box culvert construction. The new technique uses inflated balloons as the interior form in the construction of an arch culvert. Concrete is then shotcreted onto the balloon form to complete the arch culvert. The objective of the research project was to construct an air formed arch culvert to determine its applicability as an alternative county bridge replacement technique. The project had the following results: (1) The Air-O-Form method can be used to construct a structurally sound arch culvert; and (2) The method must become more economical if it is to compete with box culverts.

Iowa counties have tried to rehabilitate deteriorating portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements with standard overlays, placement of engineering fabric, rock, open graded bituminous mixes and cracking and seating. While these methods prolong the life of the road, the cracks in the old pavement have eventually reflected to the surface. One possible alternative for rehabilitating severely deteriorated roads and preventing reflective cracking is the rubblization process. The objective of this research project was to rehabilitate and evaluate a severely deteriorated PCC roadway using a rubblization process. A 3.0 km (1.9 mi) section of L63 in Mills County was selected for this research. The road was divided into 16 sections. A resonate frequency vibration pavement breaker was used to rubblize the existing pavement. The variables of rubblization, drainage, and ACC overlay depths of 75 mm (3 in.), 100 mm (4 in.), and 125 mm (5 in.) were evaluated. The research on rubblized concrete pavement bases support the following conclusions: (1) The rubblization process prevents reflective cracking; (2) Edge drains improved the structural rating of the rubblized roadway; (3) An ACC overlay of 125 mm (5 in.) on a rubblized base provided an excellent roadway regardless of soil and drainage conditions; (4) An ACC overlay of 75 mm (3 in.) on a rubblized base can provide a good roadway if the soil structure below the rubblized base is stable and well drained; and (5) The Road Rater structural ratings of the rubblized test sections for this project are comparable to the nonrubblized test sections.
