We have synthesized Dy3+-doped ZnO nanoparticles at room temperature through the sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscopic studies confirm the crystalline nature of the particles. Excitonic absorption of ZnO shows three different bands, and we observe that incorporation of Dy3+ results in the shifting and broadening of the n=1 absorption band of ZnO. Photoluminescence studies done at the excitation wavelength of 335 nm show broad emission containing five different bands. Open-aperture z-scan studies done at 532 nm using 5 ns laser pulses show an optical limiting behavior, which numerically fits to a three-photon type absorption process. The nonlinearity is essentially resonant, as it is found to increase consistently with Dy3+ concentration. This feature makes Dy3+-doped ZnO a flexible optical limiter for potential device applications.

Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies of poly2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) with varying conjugation, and polyethylene dioxythiophene complexed with polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT-PSS) in different solvents have shown the importance of the role of pi-electron conjugation and solvent-chain interactions in controlling the chain conformation and assembly. In MEH-PPV, by increasing the extent of conjugation from 30 to 100%, the persistence length (l(p)) increases from 20 to 66 angstrom. Moreover, a pronounced second peak in the pair distribution function has been observed in the fully conjugated chain, at larger length scales. This feature indicates that the chain segments tend to self-assemble as the conjugation along the chain increases. In the case of PEDOT-PSS, the chains undergo solvent induced expansion and enhanced chain organization. The clusters formed by chains are better correlated in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution than water, as observed in the scattered intensity profiles. The values of radius of gyration and the exponent (water: 2.6, DMSO: 2.31) of power-law decay, obtained from the unified scattering function (Beaucage) analysis, give evidence for chain expansion from compact (in water) to an extended coil in DMSO solutions, which is consistent with the Kratky plot analysis. The mechanism of this transition and the increase in dc conductivity of PEDOT-PSS in DMSO solution are discussed. The onset frequency for the increase in ac conduction, as well as its temperature dependence, probes the extent of the connectivity in the PEDOT-PSS system. The enhanced charge transport in PEDOT-PSS in DMSO is attributed to the extended chain conformation, as observed in the SAXS results.

In this work, we present a new monolithic strategy for solving fluid-structure interaction problems involving incompressible fluids, within the context of the finite element method. This strategy, similar to the continuum dynamics, conserves certain properties, and thus provides a rational basis for the design of the time-stepping strategy; detailed proofs of the conservation of these properties are provided. The proposed algorithm works with displacement and velocity variables for the structure and fluid, respectively, and introduces no new variables to enforce velocity or traction continuity. Any existing structural dynamics algorithm can be used without change in the proposed method. Use of the exact tangent stiffness matrix ensures that the algorithm converges quadratically within each time step. An analytical solution is presented for one of the benchmark problems used in the literature, namely, the piston problem. A number of benchmark problems including problems involving free surfaces such as sloshing and the breaking dam problem are used to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method. An enzyme which cleaves the benzene ring of 3,5-dichiorocatechol has been purified to homogeneity from Pseudomonas cepacia CSV90, grown with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as the sole carbon source. The enzyme was a nonheme ferric dioxygenase and catalyzed the intradiol cleavage of all the examined catechol derivatives, 3,5-dichlorocatechol having the highest specificity constant of 7.3 μM−1 s−1 in an air-saturated buffer. No extradiol-cleaving activity was observed. Thus, the enzyme was designated as 3,5-dichlorocatechol 1,2-dioxygenase. The molecular weight of the native enzyme was ascertained to be 56,000 by light scattering method, while the Mr value of the enzyme denatured with 6 M guanidine-HCl or sodium dodecyl sulfate was 29,000 or 31,600, respectively, suggesting that the enzyme was a homodimer. The iron content was estimated to be 0.89 mol per mole of enzyme. The enzyme was deep red and exhibited a broad absorption spectrum with a maximum at around 425 nm, which was bleached by sodium dithionite, and shifted to 515 nm upon anaerobic 3,5-dichlorocatechol binding. The catalytic constant and the Km values for 3,5-dichlorocatechol and oxygen were 34.7 s−1 and 4.4 and 652 μM, respectively, at pH 8 and 25°C. Some heavy metal ions, chelating agents and sulfhydryl reagents inhibited the activity. The NH2-terminal sequence was determined up to 44 amino acid residues and compared with those of the other catechol dioxygenases previously reported.

The subcutaneous administration of methyl isocyanate (MIC) in 1.0 LD50 dose in rats caused a significant effect on hepatic mitochondrial function only at complex I region of the respiratory chain. MIC administration at 1.0 LD50 dose also resulted in significant increases in malondialdehyde and ferrous ion concentration in liver mitochondria. It is suggested that the augmented lipid peroxidation in hepatic mitochondria, catalyzed by iron, possibly mobilized from intracellular stores leads to the inhibition of enzymes of mitochondrial respiration at complex I region, in vivo, in rats receiving a lethal dose of MIC subcutaneously.

The equivalent circuit parameters for a pentacene organic field-effect transistor are determined from low frequency impedance measurements in the dark as well as under light illumination. The source-drain channel impedance parameters are obtained from Bode plot analysis and the deviations at low frequency are mainly due to the contact impedance. The charge accumulation at organic semiconductor-metal interface and dielectric-semiconductor interface is monitored from the response to light as an additional parameter to find out the contributions arising from photovoltaic and photoconductive effects. The shift in threshold voltage is due to the accumulation of photogenerated carriers under source-drain electrodes and at dielectric-semiconductor interface, and also this dominates the carrier transport. The charge carrier trapping at various interfaces and in the semiconductor is estimated from the dc and ac impedance measurements under illumination. Electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of graphene flakes depend sensitively upon the type of edge atoms. We present a simple software tool for determining the type of edge atoms in a honeycomb lattice. The algorithm is based on nearest neighbor counting. Whether an edge atom is of armchair or zigzag type is decided by the unique pattern of its nearest neighbors. Particular attention is paid to the practical aspects of using the tool, as additional features such as extracting out the edges from the lattice could help in analyzing images from transmission microscopy or other experimental probes. Ultimately, the tool in combination with density-functional theory or tight-binding method can also be helpful in correlating the properties of graphene flakes with the different armchair-to-zigzag ratios. In 1984 Jutila [5] obtained a transformation formula for certain exponential sums involving the Fourier coefficients of a holomorphic cusp form for the full modular group SL(2, Z). With the help of the transformation formula he obtained good estimates for the distance between consecutive zeros on the critical line of the Dirichlet series associated with the cusp form and for the order of the Dirichlet series on the critical line, [7]. In this paper we follow Jutila to obtain a transformation formula for exponential sums involving the Fourier coefficients of either holomorphic cusp forms or certain Maass forms for congruence subgroups of SL(2, Z) and prove similar estimates for the corresponding Dirichlet series.

The present research work reports the eosin Y (EY) and fluorescein (FL) sensitized visible light degradation of phenol, 4-chlorophenol (CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) using combustion synthesized nano-TiO2 (CS TiO2). The rate of degradation of the phenolic compounds was higher in the presence of EY/CS TiO2 compared to FL/CS TiO2 system. A detailed mechanism of sensitized degradation was proposed and a mechanistic model for the rate of degradation of the phenolic compound was derived using the pyramidal network reduction technique. It was found that at low initial dye concentrations, the rate of degradation of the phenolic compound is first order in the concentration of the dye, while at high initial dye concentrations, the rate is first order in the concentration of the phenolic compound. The order of degradation of the different phenolic compounds follows: CP > TCP > DCP > phenol. The different phenolic and dye intermediates that were formed during the degradation were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and the most probable pathway of degradation is proposed. Single crystals (up to 1 cm size) of K, Rb and Cs periodates have been grown in silica gel. In general, good quality crystals were obtained in gel of specific gravity 1.04 and pH 4. The metal/iodine ratios were determined and compared with calculated values. Morphological studies were carried out using a bicircle optical goniometer. Other characterization methods include X-ray diffraction, optical absorption, differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. Microscopic examination of CsIO4 crystals in particular has revealed the existence of ferroelastic domains in the crystal. The structural basis for the occurence of ferroelasticity in this crystal is discussed and the high temperature space group is predicted.

The chloroplastic isoform of glutamine synthetase (GS(2), EC 6.3.1.2) from normal and water stressed safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L. cv.A-300) leaves has been purified to apparent electrophoretic homogeneity by a procedure involving anion-exchange, hydrophobic and size-exclusion chromatography followed by electroelution of the protein from preparative polyacrylamide gels. The observed molecular weight of the native protein varied from 305-330 kDa depending on the sizing column employed. The native protein is composed of 44 kDa subunits. Under conditions of saturating ammonium and at ATP levels of 0.1-10 mM, double-reciprocal plots with respect to glutamate are biphasic and concave downward at high concentrations of the varied substrate for normal enzyme but are linear for enzyme from water-stressed plants. Under subsaturating ATP levels, K-Glu is over 18-fold lower for enzyme from stressed leaves. The K-m, (ATP) varies with Mg2+ levels in the assay mixture. Double-reciprocal plots of initial velocity with respect to ATP at changing fixed levels of NH4+ are linear for normal enzyme but are curved upwards for enzyme from stressed leaves. Initial velocity data of 1/v vs. 1/ammonium for the enzyme from both the sources are non-linear (curved upwards) when ATP is saturating. At subsaturating ATP levels, the data are linear for normal enzyme but are still non-linear for the enzyme from stressed leaves. The results obtained suggest positively cooperative binding of NH4+ A V-max(/2) value of 3.6 mM for Mg2+ was obtained at 5 mM ATP. The isoelectric point of the native protein from normal and stressed leaves was determined to be, respectively, 5.6 and 6.1. The mixed competitive and competitive inhibitors, methionine sulfoximine and ADP and K-i values of 0.086 mM (0.017 for the enzyme from stressed leaves) and 2.15 mM (1.70 for the enzyme from stressed leaves), respectively. Enzyme from stressed leaves is not inhibited by 5 mM proline. The observed kinetic constants of GS(2) from normal and water stressed safflower seedlings are discussed in relation to the known water-stress tolerance of this crop plant.

The problem of structural system identification when measurements originate from multiple tests and multiple sensors is considered. An offline solution to this problem using bootstrap particle filtering is proposed. The central idea of the proposed method is the introduction of a dummy independent variable that allows for simultaneous assimilation of multiple measurements in a sequential manner. The method can treat linear/nonlinear structural models and allows for measurements on strains and displacements under static/dynamic loads. Illustrative examples consider measurement data from numerical models and also from laboratory experiments. The results from the proposed method are compared with those from a Kalman filter-based approach and the superior performance of the proposed method is demonstrated. Photocatalysis using semiconductor catalyst such as TiO2, in presence of UV light, is a promising technique for the inactivation of various microorganisms present in water. In the current study, the photocatalytic inactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria was studied with commercial Degussa Aeroxide TiO2 P25 (Aeroxide) and combustion synthesized TiO2 (CS TiO2) catalysts immobilized on glass slides in presence of UV irradiation. Thin films of the catalyst and polyelectrolytes, poly(allyl amine hydrochloride) and poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt), were deposited on glass slides by layer by layer (LbL) deposition method and characterized by SEM and AFM imaging. The effect of various parameters, namely, catalyst concentration, surface area and number of bilayers, on inactivation was studied. Maximum inactivation of 8-log reduction in the viable count was observed with 1.227 mg/cm(2) of catalyst loaded slides. With this loading, complete inactivation was observed within 90 min and 75 min of irradiation, for Aeroxide and CS TiO2, respectively. Further increase in the catalyst concentration or increasing number of bilayers had no significant effect on inactivation. The effect of surface area on the inactivation was studied by increasing the number of slides and the inactivation was observed to increase with increasing surface area. It was also observed that the immobilized catalyst slides can be used for several cycles leading to an economic process. The study shows potential application of TiO2, for the inactivation of bacteria, in its fixed form by a simple immobilization technique.

Pseudomonas putida CSV86, a soil bacterium, grows on 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene as the sole source of carbon and energy. In order to deduce the pathways for the biodegradation of 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene, metabolites were isolated from the spent medium and purified by thin layer chromatography. Emphasis has been placed on the structural characterisation of isolated intermediates by CC-MS, demonstration of enzyme activities in the cell free extracts and measurement of oxygen uptake by whole cells in the presence of various probable metabolic intermediates. The data obtained from such a study suggest the possibility of occurrence of multiple pathways in the degradation of 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene. We propose that, in one of the pathways, the aromatic ring adjacent to the one bearing the methyl moiety is oxidized leading to the formation of methylsalicylates and methylcatechols. In another pathway the methyl side chain is hydroxylated to -CH2-OH which is further converted to -CHO and -COOH resulting in the formation of naphthoic acid as the end product. In addition to this, 2-hydroxymethylnaphthalene formed by the hydroxylation of the methyl group of 2-methylnaphthalene undergoes aromatic ring hydroxylation. The resultant dihydrodiol is further oxidised by a series of enzyme catalysed reactions to form 4-hydroxymethyl catechol as the end product of the pathway.

The free vibration of strings with randomly varying mass and stiffness is considered. The joint probability density functions of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are characterized in terms of the solution of a pair of stochastic non-linear initial value problems. Analytical solutions of these equations based on the method of stochastic averaging are obtained. The effects of the mean and autocorrelation of the mass process are included in the analysis. Numerical results for the marginal probability density functions of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are obtained and are found to compare well with Monte Carlo simulation results. The random eigenvalues, when normalized with respect to their corresponding deterministic values, are observed to tend to become first order stochastically stationary with respect to the mode count.
