Complexes of the type [PdX(PPh3)(1)]X [1 = 4-phenyl-3- thiosemicarbazide; X = Cl- (2), Br- (3), I- (4), and SCN- (5)] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and IR, UV/Vis, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of complex 4 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The binding of the complexes with a purine base (guanosine) was investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, which showed the complexes to coordinate to guanosine through N7. A gel electrophoresis assay demonstrated the ability of 2-5 to cleave DNA plasmid. All the complexes were tested in vitro by means of the MTT assay for their cytotoxicity against two murine cell lines, LM3 (mammary adenocarcinoma) and LP07 (lung adenocarcinoma), and compared with cisplatin. Complexes 2-5 exhibited good cytotoxicity that surpasses that of cisplatin in the case of LM3. A series of thiosemicarbazide/phosphane palladium(II) complexes have been synthesized and fully characterized. These complexes are able to cleave DNA plasmid and show cytotoxicity against adenocarcinoma (mammary LM3 and lung LP07), surpassing the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in the case of LM3. The marine environment offers both economic and scientific potential which are relatively untapped from a biotechnological point of view. These environments whilst harsh are ironically fragile and dependent on a harmonious life form balance. Exploitation of natural resources by exhaustive wild harvesting has obvious negative environmental consequences. From a European industry perspective marine organisms are a largely underutilised resource. This is not due to lack of interest but due to a lack of choice the industry faces for cost competitive, sustainable and environmentally conscientious product alternatives. Knowledge of the biotechnological potential of marine organisms together with the development of sustainable systems for their cultivation, processing and utilisation are essential. In 2010, the European Commission recognised this need and funded a collaborative RTD/SME project under the Framework 7-Knowledge Based Bio-Economy (KBBE) Theme 2 Programme 'Sustainable culture of marine microorganisms, algae and/or invertebrates for high value added products'. The scope of that project entitled 'Sustainable Production of Biologically Active Molecules of Marine Based Origin' (BAMMBO) is outlined. Although the Union is a global leader in many technologies, it faces increasing competition from traditional rivals and emerging economies alike and must therefore improve its innovation performance. For this reason innovation is placed at the heart of a European Horizon 2020 Strategy wherein the challenge is to connect economic performance to eco performance. This article provides a synopsis of the research activities of the BAMMBO project as they fit within the wider scope of sustainable environmentally conscientious marine resource exploitation for high-value biomolecules. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The biological activity of some new mixed silver-phosphane-thio-ligand complexes, with 1:1:2, 1:1:1 and 1:2:1 (Ag:phospine:ligand) compositions, have been examined. Ten compounds were prepared using a series of silver(I) salts [AgX, where X = NO3, ClO4, PF6 and Br], tertiary phosphines and the ligands thi-osemicarbazide, 2-(propan-2-ylidene) hydrazinecarbothioamide, and thiazolidine-2-thione. The syntheses were carried out under ambient conditions, and the ten complexes obtained were found to be light stable. All 10 compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy, whereas nine compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The anti-proliferative activities were evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC: lg/mL) in an aqueous suspension system and they all show promising potential activity against selective strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungous and Mycrobaterium tuberculosis H37Rv. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The microbiological responses of two bivalves species from Tagus estuary, Venerupis pullastra (native clam) and Ruditapes philippinarum (exotic clam) were investigated during 48h of depuration and subsequent simulated transport in semi-dry conditions at two temperatures (4 and 22°C) until reaching 50% lethal time (LT50). Regardless of temperature and species, the maintenance of clams in water for 48h (depuration period) did not affect LT50 during transport. R.philippinarum showed higher survival rates than V.pullastra, always reaching LT50 later, especially at 4°C. Significant differences between clams' species were found in almost all microbiological parameters. This can be related with clams' biological activity and habitat environmental conditions since both clams do not coexist in Tagus estuary. Depuration was efficient to reduce the bacterial load, particularly Escherichia coli, but not efficient to remove Vibrio spp. In both species, the growth of Vibrio spp. was inhibited at 4°C, whereas exponential growth occurred at 22°C. Total viable counts significantly increased in most treatments, while E.coli counts significantly decreased to undetected levels, except for non-depurated R.philippinarum simulated transported at 4°C. Thus, this study highlights the importance of clams depuration for at least 24h in polluted estuarine areas, followed by transport at low temperatures (4°C). © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
