No presente estudo foram utilizados 21 animais machos, sendo 10 ½ Somalis Brasileira ½ Crioula (SB-C) e 11 ½ Santa Inês ½ Crioula (SI-C), submetidos a duas dietas durante a amamentação: feno de capim-gramão + feno de leucena (D1) e feno de capim-gramão + feno de leucena + concentrado com 20% de proteína bruta (D2). Os resultados de pH da carne crua, assim como os da determinação de cor, perdas na cocção, força de cisalhamento e análise sensorial foram analisados num arranjo fatorial 2 ´ 2 (duas raças ´ 2 sistemas de alimentação). Não foi verificado efeito das cruzas nem dos sistemas de alimentação sobre os parâmetros de qualidade estudados. Na carne analisada, o pH variou de 5,62 a 5,65, as perdas na cocção de 21,45 a 23,90% e a força de cisalhamento de 4,46 a 4,85 kg-f. A cor das carnes variaram de 36,67 a 37,70 para o valor de L*, de 14,85 a 15,54 para o valor de a* e de 0,83 a 1,37 para o valor de b*. A análise sensorial indicou uma boa aceitação das carnes avaliadas, sem diferenças entre os fatores estudados. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, a carne de borregos proveniente de animais do Nordeste brasileiro, apresentou características satisfatórias, tanto nas medições objetivas como subjetivas, independente do genótipo ou da dieta utilizada.

É crescente a preocupação da população em ingerir dietas mais saudáveis, mantendo adequado o nível de colesterol plasmático, com conseqüente redução na incidência de doenças cardiovasculares. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a composição centesimal e o perfil de ácidos graxos da carne de novilho precoce de quatro grupos genéticos: Nelore (R1), Nelore x Canchin (R2), Nelore x Limousin (R3) e Nelore x Aberdeen Angus (R4), alimentados com dieta normal (D1) ou por outra constituída por lipídios protegidos (D2). Determinaram-se os teores de umidade, proteína, lipídios totais, resíduo mineral fixo e o perfil de ácidos graxos. Não foram encontradas diferenças para os teores de umidade, proteína, lipídios totais, Ácidos Graxos Saturados (AGS) e Ácidos Graxos Monoinsaturados (AGMI). A dieta protegida ocasionou aumento do teor total de Ácidos Graxos Poliinsaturados (AGPI), quando comparada à D1. Por sua vez, animais que receberam D1 apresentaram maior teor de AGPI w-3 que os da D2. Verificou-se que as técnicas de nutrição animal utilizadas neste estudo garantiram um produto com maior teor de AGPI, característica esta desejável na saúde humana. Fazem-se necessários novos estudos, utilizando-se modelos experimentais, para que sejam avaliados os efeitos da carne de novilho precoce na colesterolemia.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) population. CKD has been recognized as a significant public health problem and CKD patients are at increased risk of total and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. There are increasing epidemiological data suggesting that vitamin D deficiency may play a role in overall morbidity and mortality associated with CKD. The vitamin D hormonal system is classically implicated in the regulation of calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism but there is ample evidence to support the claim that extra renal conversion of 25(OH)D to 1.25(OH)2 has significant biological roles beyond those traditionally ascribed to vitamin D. Based on the current state of evidence this review intends to give an update on novel biological and clinical insights with relevance to the steroid hormone vitamin D specifically in patients with kidney disease.

Positron emission tomography imaging has both academic and applied uses in revealing the distribution and density of different molecular targets in the central nervous system. Following the significant progress made with the dopamine D2 receptor, advances have been made in developing PET tracers to allow analysis of receptor occupancy of many other receptor types as well as evaluating changes in endogenous synaptic transmitter concentrations of transmitters e.g. serotonin and noradrenaline. Noradrenergic receptors are divided into α1-, α2- and β-adrenoceptor subfamilies, in humans each of which is composed of three receptor subtypes. The α2-adrenoceptors have an important presynaptic auto-inhibitory function on noradrenaline release but they also have postsynaptic roles in modulating the release of other neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine. One of the subtypes, the α2C-adrenoceptor, has been detected at distinct locations in the central nervous system, most notably the dorsal striatum. Several serious neurological conditions causing dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease have been linked to disturbed noradrenergic signaling. Furthermore, altered noradrenergic signaling has also been implicated in conditions like ADHD, depression, anxiety and schizophrenia. In order to benefit future research into these central nervous system disorders as well as being useful in the clinical development of drugs affecting brain noradrenergic neurotransmission, validation work of a novel tracer for positron emission tomography studies in humans was performed. Altogether 85 PET imaging experiments were performed during four separate clinical trials. The repeatability of [11C]ORM-13070 binding was tested in healthy individuals, followed by a study to evaluate the dose-dependent displacement of [11C]ORM-13070 from α2C-adrenoceptors by a competing ligand, and the final two studies examined the sensitivity of [11C]ORM-13070 binding to reflect changes in endogenous noradrenaline levels. The repeatability of [11C]ORM-13070 binding was very high. The binding properties of the tracer allowed for a reliable estimation of α2C-AR occupancy by using the reference tissue ratio method with low test-retest variability. [11C]ORM-13070 was dose-dependently displaced from its specific binding sites by the subtype-nonselective α2-adrenoceptor antagonist atipamezole, and thus it proved suitable for use in clinical drug development of novel α2C-adrenoceptor ligands e.g. to determine the best doses and dosing intervals for clinical trials. Convincing experimental evidence was gained to support the suitability of [11C]ORM-13070 for detecting an increase in endogenous synaptic noradrenaline in the human brain. Tracer binding in the thalamus tended to increase in accordance with reduced activity of noradrenergic projections from the locus coeruleus, although statistical significance was not reached. Thus, the investigation was unable to fully validate [11C]ORM-13070 for the detection of pharmacologically evoked reductions in noradrenaline levels.
