Fatigue crack initiation and propagation in duplex stainless steels are strongly affected by microstructure in both inert and aggressive environments. Fatigue crack growth rates in wrought Zeron 100 duplex stainless steel in air were found to vary with orientation depending on the frequency of crack tip retardation at ferrite/austenite grain boundaries. Fatigue crack propagation rates in 3.5% NaCl solution and high purity water are increased by hydrogen assisted transgranular cyclic cleavage of the ferrite. The corrosion fatigue results are interpreted using a model for the cyclic cleavage mechanism.

Zeron 100 duplex stainless steel is susceptible to embrittlement following ageing at temperatures between 350 °C and 450 °C. The embrittlement is associated with cleavage of the age-hardened ferrite phase, initiated by deformation twinning. This can result in order of magnitude increases in the fatigue crack propagation rate. The effects of ageing on the mechanisms of fatigue crack propagation in Zero 100 are investigated, and a quantitative model is developed, accounting for the effects of hardness, temperature, stress level and microstructure on the fatigue crack growth rate. © 1994.

In the temperature range 200-400 degree C the Ni-base superalloy, N901, develops marked dynamic strain ageing effects in its tensile behavior. These include inverse strain rate sensitivity, especially in UTS values, strongly serrated stress-strain curves and a heavily sheared failure mode at the higher test-temperatures. As for steels these effects seem to be due to interactions between the dislocations and the interstitial carbon atoms present. The results of tensile and fatigue threshold tests carried out between 20 degree C and 420 degree C are reported and the fatigue behavior is discussed in terms of the effects of surface roughness induced closure, temperature and strain aging interactions.

Hydrogen assisted subcritical cleavage of the ferrite matrix occurs during fatigue of a duplex stainless steel in gaseous hydrogen. The ferrite fails by a cyclic cleavage mechanism and fatigue crack growth rates are independent of frequency between 0.1 and 5 Hz. Macroscopic crack growth rates are controlled by the fraction of ferrite grains cleaving along the crack front, which can be related to the maximum stress intensity, Kmax. A superposition model is developed to predict simultaneously the effects of stress intensity range (ΔK) and K ratio (Kmin/Kmax). The effect of Kmax is rationalised by a local cleavage criterion which requires a critical tensile stress, normal to the {001} cleavage plane, acting over a critical distance within an embrittled zone at the crack tip. © 1991.

The effects of temperature on hydrogen assisted fatigue crack propagation are investigated in three steels in the low-to-medium strength range; a low alloy structural steel, a super duplex stainless steel, and a super ferritic stainless steel. Significant enhancement of crack growth rates is observed in hydrogen gas at atmospheric pressure in all three materials. Failure occurs via a mechanism of time independent, transgranular, cyclic cleavage over a frequency range of 0.1-5 Hz. Increasing the temperature in hydrogen up to 80°C markedly reduces the degree of embrittlement in the structural and super ferritic steels. No such effect is observed in the duplex stainless steel until the temperature exceeds 120°C. The temperature response may be understood by considering the interaction between absorbed hydrogen and micro-structural traps, which are generated in the zone of intense plastic deformation ahead of the fatigue crack tip. © 1992.

Fatigue crack propagation, tensile and fracture toughness data for four aeroengine bearing steels are reported. The steels involved are the through-hardened tool steels 18-4-1 (T1) and M50, and two similar carburized steels, RBD and Volvic. Crack growth data have been obtained at 20 °C and 280 °C to cover the range of oil temperatures experienced in aeroengine bearing operations. At 20 °C threshold ΔK values (ΔKth) ranged between 3.5 and 4.5 MPa √m with Paris exponents (m) of between 2.0 and 3.5. The lowest m-values were seen in the carburizing steels, which also exhibited lower Paris regime crack growth rates than M50 and 18-4-1. For all the steels, growth rates were higher at 280 °C,than 20 °C, although there was a slight tendency for ΔKth to increase, probably associated with oxide-induced closure at 280 °C. The effects of primary carbides, strength and toughness on fatigue crack growth behaviour are discussed, in relation to the importance of static-mode cracking. © 1990.

Fatigue crack propagation and threshold data for two Ni-base alloys, Astroloy and Nimonic 901, are reported. At room temperature the effect which altering the load ratio (R-ratio) has on fatigue behaviour is strongly dependent on grain size. In the coarse grained microstructures crack growth rates increase and threshold values decrease markedly as R rises from 0. 1 to 0. 8, whereas only small changes in behaviour occur in fine grained material. In Astroloy, when strength level and gamma grain size are kept constant, there is very little effect of processing route and gamma prime distribution on room temperature threshold and crack propagation results. The dominant microstructural effect on this type of fatigue behaviour is the matrix ( gamma ) grain size itself.

We report performance enhancements enabled by pre-dispersed spectral inversion equivalent to that of ideal back-propagation, with further x2 increase in reach from multi-channel compensation, with spectral inversion employed upto 400km (from mid-link) with <1dB penalties. © 2012 OSA.

The reactivity of Amberlite (IRA-67) base "heterogeneous" resin in Sonogashira cross-coupling of 8-bromoguanosine 1 with phenylacetylene 3 to give 2 has been examined. Both 1 and 2 coordinate to Pd and Cu ions, which explains why at equivalent catalyst loadings, the homogeneous reaction employing triethylamine base is poor yielding. X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to probe and quantify the active nitrogen base sites of the Amberlite resin, and postreaction Pd and Cu species. The Pd2Cl3(PPh)2 precatalyst and CuI cocatalyst degrade to give Amberlite-supported metal nanoparticles (average size ∼2.7 nm). The guanosine product 2 formed using the Amberlite Pd/Cu catalyst system is of higher purity than reactions using a homogeneous Pd precatalyst, a prerequisite for use in biological applications. This paper describes physics of nonlinear ultra‐short laser pulse propagation affected by plasma created by the pulse itself. Major applications are also discussed. Nonlinear propagation of the femtosecond laser pulses in gaseous and solid transparent dielectric media is a fundamental physical phenomenon in a wide range of important applications such as laser lidars, laser micro‐machining (ablation) and microfabrication etc. These applications require very high intensity of the laser field, typically 1013–1015 TW/cm2. Such high intensity leads to significant ionisation and creation of electron‐ion or electron‐hole plasma. The presence of plasma results into significant multiphoton and plasma absorption and plasma defocusing. Consequently, the propagation effects appear extremely complex and result from competitive counteraction of the above listed effects and Kerr effect, diffraction and dispersion. The theoretical models used for consistent description of laser‐plasma interaction during femtosecond laser pulse propagation are derived and discussed. It turns out that the strongly nonlinear effects such self‐focusing followed by the pulse splitting are essential. These phenomena feature extremely complex dynamics of both the electromagnetic field and plasma density with different spatio‐temporal structures evolving at the same time. Some numerical approaches capable to handle all these complications are also discussed.

Experimental observation of autosoliton propagation in a nonlinear switch-guided, dispersion-managed system operating at 80Gbit/s is reported for the first time. The system is based on a strong dispersion map and supports autosoliton propagation over 3,000km.

We describe the linear and nonlinear optical transfer characteristics of a multi-resonance device consisting of two optical ring resonators coupled one to the other and to an optical waveguide. The propagation effects displayed by the device are compared with those of a sequence of fundamental ring resonators coupled to a waveguide.

We provide a theoretical explanation of the results on the intensity distributions and correlation functions obtained from a random-beam speckle field in nonlinear bulk waveguides reported in the recent publication by Bromberg et al. [Nat. Photonics 4, 721 (2010) ].. We study both the focusing and defocusing cases and in the limit of small speckle size (short-correlated disordered beam) provide analytical asymptotes for the intensity probability distributions at the output facet. Additionally we provide a simple relation between the speckle sizes at the input and output of a focusing nonlinear waveguide. The results are of practical significance for nonlinear Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometry in both optical waveguides and Bose-Einstein condensates. © 2012 American Physical Society.

A novel kind of Airy-based pulse with an invariant propagation in lossy dispersive media is proposed. The basic principle is based on an optical energy trade-off between different parts of the pulse caused by the chromatic dispersion, which is used to compensate the attenuation losses of the propagation medium. Although the ideal concept of the proposed pulses implies infinite pulse energy, the numerical simulations show that practical finite energy pulses can be designed to obtain a partially invariant propagation over a finite distance of propagation.

We report the impact of longitudinal signal power profile on the transmission performance of coherently-detected 112 Gb/s m-ary polarization multiplexed quadrature amplitude modulation system after compensation of deterministic nonlinear fibre impairments. Performance improvements up to 0.6 dB (Q(eff)) are reported for a non-uniform transmission link power profile. Further investigation reveals that the evolution of the transmission performance with power profile management is fully consistent with the parametric amplification of the amplified spontaneous emission by the signal through four-wave mixing. In particular, for a non-dispersion managed system, a single-step increment of 4 dB in the amplifier gain, with respect to a uniform gain profile, at similar to 2/3(rd) of the total reach considerably improves the transmission performance for all the formats studied. In contrary a negative-step profile, emulating a failure (gain decrease or loss increase), significantly degrades the bit-error rate.
