Plutonium and Sr-90 are considered to be among the most radiotoxic nuclides produced by the nuclear fission process. In spite of numerous studies on mammals and humans there is still no general agreement on the retention half time of both radionuclides in the skeleton in the general population. Here we determined plutonium and Sr-90 in human vertebrae in individuals deceased between 1960 and 2004 in Switzerland. Plutonium was measured by sensitive SF-ICP-MS techniques and Sr-90 by radiometric methods. We compared our results to the ones obtained for other environmental compartments to reveal the retention half time of NBT fallout Pu-239 and Sr-90 in trabecular bones of the Swiss population. Results show that plutonium has a retention half time of 40 +/- 14 years. In contrast Sr-90 has a shorter retention half time of 13.5 +/- 1.0 years. Moreover Sr-90 retention half time in vertebrae is shown to be linked to the retention half time in food and other environmental compartments. These findings demonstrate that the renewal of the vertebrae through calcium homeostatic control is faster for Sr-90 excretion than for plutonium excretion. The precise determination of the retention half time of plutonium in the skeleton will improve the biokinetic model of plutonium metabolism in humans. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

La prévention primaire des maladies cardiovasculaires par les médecins s'effectue par une prise en charge individualisée des facteurs de risque. L'indication à un traitement par statines se base sur une estimation du risque de survenue d'une maladie cardiovasculaire et sur le taux de LDL-cholestérol. Trois scores de risque sont couramment utilisés: le score PROCAM, le score Framingham, et le SCORE européen. En Suisse, le Groupe Suisse Lipides et Athérosclérose (GSLA) recommande en première instance l'utilisation du score PROCAM avec une adaptation du niveau de risque pour la Suisse. Une enquête a aussi montré que c'est le score le plus utilisé en Suisse. Dans cet article, les particularités de ces scores et leurs applications pratiques en ce qui concerne la prescription de statines en prévention primaire sont discutées. Les conséquences et les bénéfices potentiels de l'application de ces scores en Suisse sont également abordés. [Abstract] Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease by physicians is achieved by management of individual risk factors. The eligibility for treatment with statins is based on both an estimate of the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and the LDL-cholesterol. Three risk scores are commonly used : the PROCAM score, the Framingham score, and the European score. In Switzerland, the Swiss Group Lipids and Atherosclerosis (GSLA) recommends to use the PROCAM score with an adjustment of the level of risk for Switzerland. A survey also showed that PROCAM is the most used in Switzerland. In this article, the differences of these scores and their practical applications regarding the prescription of statins in primary prevention are discussed. The consequences and potential benefits of applying these scores in Switzerland are also discussed.

A radiochemical procedure was developed for the sequential determination of Pu and Am radioisotopes in environmental samples. The radioisotope activities were then used to assess the origin and release date of the environmental plutonium. The radioanalytical procedure is based on the separation of Pu and Am on selective extraction chromatographic resins (Eichrom TEVA and DGA). Alpha sources were prepared by electrodeposition on stainless steel discs, and the alpha emitting radionuclides (238Pu, 239,240Pu and 241Am) were measured by alpha spectrometry. For the determination of the beta emitting 241Pu, the Pu alpha source was leached in hot concentrated nitric acid and the Pu fraction further purified by extraction chromatography on a small column of TEVA resin (100 μg of resin in a pipette tip). 241Pu is then measured by ultra low level liquid scintillation counting. Due to the lack of reference material for 241Pu, the proposed radiochemical method was nevertheless validated using four IAEA reference sediments with information values of 241Pu. The proposed method was then used to determine the 238Pu, 239,240Pu, 241Pu and 241Am activity concentrations in alpine soils of France and Switzerland. The soil is the primary receptor of the atmospheric radioactive fallout and, because of the strong binding interaction with soils particles, the isotopes are little fractionated. Therefore, the activity ratios 241Pu/239+240Pu and 238Pu/239,240Pu in soil samples were used to determine the origin (source) and date of the Pu contamination in the investigated alpine sites. The 241Pu/239,240Pu and 238Pu/239,240Pu activity ratios confirmed that the main origin of Pu in the alpine soils was the global fallout from the nuclear bomb tests (NBT) in the fifties and sixties. Furthermore, the 241Pu/241Am activity ratios were used to determine the age of the Pu contamination, which is also an important data for distinguishing the Pu sources. The estimation of the date of the contamination, by the 241Pu/241Am age-dating method, further confirmed the NBT as the Pu source. However, the 241Pu/241Am dating method was limited to samples where Pu-Am fractionation was insignificant. If any, the contribution of the Chernobyl accident in the studied sites is negligible.

Esta pesquisa teve como principal objetivo investigar a associação entre intimidação entre pares e violência intrafamiliar. Participaram do estudo 239 estudantes, com idades entre 11 e 15 anos, sendo que 34,7% eram meninos e 65,3%, meninas. Construiu-se um questionário baseado em outros instrumentos que continha: questões sobre variáveis sociodemográficas; itens que investigavam a exposição dos estudantes à violência interparental e questões que mediam a violência física e psicológica cometida por mães e pais contra os participantes. O envolvimento em bullying foi avaliado por meio de 26 itens, desenvolvidos especialmente para os propósitos do estudo, baseados em uma versão modificada do questionário de Olweus. Foram encontradas associações entre violência doméstica e bullying, com peculiaridades de acordo com o sexo dos participantes. Estar exposto à violência interparental esteve associado com ser alvo/autor de bullying na escola, especialmente para as meninas, mas não com ser vítima de intimidação. A violência parental direta, por sua vez, aumentou a probabilidade de os meninos relatarem envolvimento em bullying como vítima e também a chance de ser vítima-agressora. Entre as meninas, sofrer violência por parte dos pais mostrou-se um fator associado somente com atuar em intimidação como alvo/autor.

Alors que les politiques publiques de protection de l'environnement se sont développées de manière exponentielle ces dernières décennies, les problèmes posés par les pollutions, la surexploitation des ressources naturelles ou les impacts du changement climatique demeu-rent et se renouvellent sans cesse. C'est que l'adoption d'une règle ne constitue jamais une fin en soi. Encore faut-il, pour qu'elle produise ses effets, que les acteurs se l'approprient, la traduisent comme une prescription qui s'impose au niveau concret de l'action. Or, au même titre que l'adoption d'une politique publique, sa mise en oeuvre représente un processus hautement conflictuel et politique. Loin d'être mécanique ou linéaire, cette phase est assimi-lable à un véritable processus d'appropriation des règles, émaillé de rapports de force et d'arrangements entre acteurs, de stratégies complémentaires ou concurrentes déployées par un large éventail de protagonistes. Tous ne poursuivent dans ce cadre pas des objectifs de concrétisation, certains cherchant à contourner ou à instrumentaliser les règles, à atté-nuer leurs effets ou à favoriser la mise en place de solutions sur mesure. Il y a, clairement, une distance de la règle à l'action. La présente thèse se propose de mettre en lumière la dimension politique de ces processus d'appropriation en reconstituant les jeux d'acteurs qui les composent. L'idée qui sous-tend la réflexion consiste à démontrer, sur la base d'une littérature variée (analyse des politiques publiques, droit, sociologie) et d'études de cas construits autour des bisses valaisans, le ca-ractère central des stratégies d'activation du droit. Ces dernières sont, dans un premier temps, mises en perspective au sein d'une approche qui appréhende le rapport entre règles et acteurs sur un mode moins managérial que ne le fait habituellement l'analyse des poli-tiques publiques. Relevant autant de démarches de concrétisation que de logiques alterna-tives (passivité, détournement, contournement, innovation), ces stratégies sont placées au coeur du cadre conceptuel élaboré, où elles entrent en interaction avec d'autres variables telles que les relations de pouvoir ou le caractère structurant du contexte institutionnel. Le potentiel analytique de l'approche développée est, dans un second temps, illustré à travers sa confrontation à trois études de cas gravitant autour des bisses : protection d'un écosys-tème aquatique ; gestion des risques de débordement et d'inondation ; développement ter-ritorial d'un village de montagne. Au final, le propos vient souligner tout l'intérêt d'une approche plus politique de la mise en oeuvre. La notion de stratégies d'activation et le cadre conceptuel développé contribuent à mettre en évidence un répertoire très fin de jeux d'acteurs, permettant d'organiser et de systématiser une analyse actorielle souvent réduite au minimum en raison de la difficulté à en rendre compte. La thèse apporte en ce sens une véritable plus-value à l'analyse des poli-tiques publiques, démontrant la manière dont les acteurs cherchent constamment à refor-muler les modalités de l'action collective (politics never end).

New biostratigraphic data significantly improve the age assignment of the Ladinian succession of Monte San Giorgio (UNESCO World Heritage List site, Southern Alps, Switzerland), whose world-famous fossil marine vertebrate faunas are now dated to the substage and zone levels. High-resolution single-zircon U-Pb dating was performed using ID-TIMS and chemical abrasion (CA) pre-treatment technique on volcanic ash layers intercalated in the biostratigraphically-defined intervals of the Meride Limestone. It yielded ages of 241.07 +/- 0.13 Ma (Cava superiore beds, P. gredleri Zone), 240.63 +/- 0.13 Ma (Cassina beds, P gredleri/P. archelaus transition Zone) and 239.51 +/- 0.15 Ma (Lower Kalkschieferzone, P. archelaus Zone). Our results suggest that the time interval including the vertebrate-bearing Middle Triassic section spans around 4 Myr and is thus significantly shorter than so far assumed. The San Giorgio Dolomite and the Meride Limestone correlate with intervals of the Buchenstein Formation and the Wengen Formation in the reference section at Bagolino, where the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Ladinian was defined. The new radio-isotopic ages of the Meride Limestone are up to 2 Myr older than those published for the biostratigraphically-equivalent intervals at Bagolino but they are consistent with the recent re-dating of the underlying Besano Formation, also performed using the CA technique. Average sedimentation rates at Monte San Giorgio are by more than an order of magnitude higher compared to those assumed for the Buchenstein Formation, which formed under sediment-starved pelagic conditions, and reflect prevailing high subsidence and high carbonate mud supply from the adjoining Salvatore/Esino platforms. Finally, the high-resolution U-Pb ages allow a correlation of the vertebrate faunas of the Cava superiore/Cava inferiore beds with the marine vertebrate record of the Prosanto Formation (Upper Austroalpine), so far precluded by the poor biostratigraphic control of the latter.

BACKGROUND: Genotypes obtained with commercial SNP arrays have been extensively used in many large case-control or population-based cohorts for SNP-based genome-wide association studies for a multitude of traits. Yet, these genotypes capture only a small fraction of the variance of the studied traits. Genomic structural variants (GSV) such as Copy Number Variation (CNV) may account for part of the missing heritability, but their comprehensive detection requires either next-generation arrays or sequencing. Sophisticated algorithms that infer CNVs by combining the intensities from SNP-probes for the two alleles can already be used to extract a partial view of such GSV from existing data sets. RESULTS: Here we present several advances to facilitate the latter approach. First, we introduce a novel CNV detection method based on a Gaussian Mixture Model. Second, we propose a new algorithm, PCA merge, for combining copy-number profiles from many individuals into consensus regions. We applied both our new methods as well as existing ones to data from 5612 individuals from the CoLaus study who were genotyped on Affymetrix 500K arrays. We developed a number of procedures in order to evaluate the performance of the different methods. This includes comparison with previously published CNVs as well as using a replication sample of 239 individuals, genotyped with Illumina 550K arrays. We also established a new evaluation procedure that employs the fact that related individuals are expected to share their CNVs more frequently than randomly selected individuals. The ability to detect both rare and common CNVs provides a valuable resource that will facilitate association studies exploring potential phenotypic associations with CNVs. CONCLUSION: Our new methodologies for CNV detection and their evaluation will help in extracting additional information from the large amount of SNP-genotyping data on various cohorts and use this to explore structural variants and their impact on complex traits.

Heart failure and atrial fibrillation are the main problems in general cardiology. Our therapeutic reflections summarize new ideas in the treatment of theses pathologies but we will not forget importance of PCI. All these therapies have proven now the clinical benefit but also reduction in more morbidity and mortality. Cardiac resynchronisation therapy has shown promising results. The art of medicine to develop will be to better identify the patients benefiting from this therapy. Interventional cardiology is focusing on the acute coronary syndrome. Not only rapid intervention but also the stent technology allow significant modification of endothelial tissue reaction and therefore improve the general benefit for the patient.

Plutonium and americium are radionuclides particularly difficult to measure in environmental samples because they are alpha-emitters and therefore necessitate a careful separation before any measurement, either using radiometric methods or ICP-SMS. Recent developments in extraction chromatography resins such as Eichrom (R) TRU and TEVA have resolved many of the analytical problems but drawbacks such as low recovery and spectral interferences still occasionally occur. Here, we report on the use of the new Eichrom (R) DGA resin in association with TEVA resin and high pressure microwave acid leaching for the sequential determination of plutonium and americium in environmental samples. The method results in average recoveries of 83 +/- 15% for plutonium and 73 +/- 22% for americium (n = 60), and a less than 10% deviation from reference values of four IAEA reference materials and three samples from intercomparisons exercises. The method is also suitable for measuring Pu-239 in water samples at the mu Bq/l level, if ICP-SMS is used for the measurement.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are taking an increasing place in the market of domestic lighting because they produce light with low energy consumption. In the EU, by 2016, no traditional incandescent light sources will be available and LEDs may become the major domestic light sources. Due to specific spectral and energetic characteristics of white LEDs as compared to other domestic light sources, some concerns have been raised regarding their safety for human health and particularly potential harmful risks for the eye. To conduct a health risk assessment on systems using LEDs, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES), a public body reporting to the French Ministers for ecology, for health and for employment, has organized a task group. This group consisted physicists, lighting and metrology specialists, retinal biologist and ophthalmologist who have worked together for a year. Part of this work has comprised the evaluation of group risks of different white LEDs commercialized on the French market, according to the standards and found that some of these lights belonged to the group risk 1 or 2. This paper gives a comprehensive analysis of the potential risks of white LEDs, taking into account pre-clinical knowledge as well as epidemiologic studies and reports the French Agency's recommendations to avoid potential retinal hazards.
