3`-Azido-3`-deoxythymidine (zidovudine, AZT), a synthetic analog of natural nucleoside thymidine, has been used extensively in AIDS treatments. We report here the synthesis. X-ray crystal and molecular structure, NMR, IR and Raman spectra and the thermal behavior of a novel carbonate of AZT [(AZT-O)(2)C=O], prepared by the reaction of zidovudine with carbonyldiimidazole. The carbonate compound, C(21)H(24)N(10)O(9), crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4(1)2(1)2 with a = b = 15.284(1), c = 21.695(1) angstrom, and Z = 8 molecules per unit cell. It consists of two AZT moieties of closely related conformations which are bridged by a carbonyl group to adopt a folded Z-like shape. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A robust, direct, rapid and non-destructive X-ray diffraction crystallography method to detect the polyprenylated benzophenones 7-epi-clusianone (1) and guttiferone A (2) in extracts from Garcinia brasiliensis is presented. Powder samples of benzophenones 1 and 2, dried hexane extracts from G. brasiliensis seeds and fruit`s pericarp, and the dried ethanolic extract from G. brasiliensis seeds were unambiguously characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry. The calculated X-ray diffraction peaks from crystal structures of analytes 1 and 2, previously determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique, were overlaid to those of the experimental powder diffractograms, providing a practical identification of these compounds in the analyzed material and confirming the pure contents of the powder samples. Using the X-ray diffraction crystallography method, the studied polyprenylated benzophenones were selectively and simultaneously detected in the extracts which were mounted directly on sample holder. In addition, reference materials of the analytes were not required for analyses since the crystal structures of the compounds are known. High performance liquid chromatography analyses also were comparatively carried out to quantify the analytes in the same plant extracts showing to be in agreement with X-ray diffraction crystallography method. Highly stable and crystalline V(2)O(5) nanoparticles with an average diameter of 15 nm have been easily prepared by thermal treatment of a bariandite-like vanadium oxide, V(10)O(24)center dot 9H(2)O. Their characterization was carried out by powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The fibrous and nanostructured film obtained by electrophoretic deposition of the V(2)O(5) nanoparticles showed good electroactivity when submitted to cyclic voltammetry in an ionic liquid-based electrolyte. The use of this film for the preparation of a nanostructured electrode led to an improvement of about 50% in discharge capacity values when compared with similar electrodes obtained by casting of a V(2)O(5) xerogel. The conformational features of three 2-sulphur-substituted cyclohexanone derivatives, which differ in the number of sulphur-bound oxygen atoms, i.e. zero (I), one (II) and two (III), were investigated by single crystal X-ray crystallography and geometry optimized structures determined using Hartree-Fock method. In each of (I)-(III) an intramolecular S center dot center dot center dot O(carbonyl) interaction is found with the magnitude correlated with the oxidation state of the sulphur atom, i.e. 2.838(3) angstrom in (I) to 2.924(2) angstrom in (II) to 3.0973(18) angstrom in (III). There is an inverse relationship between the strength of this interaction and the magnitude of the carbonyl bond. The supramolecular aggregation patterns are primarily determined by C-H center dot center dot center dot O contacts and are similarly influenced by the number of oxygen atoms in the molecular structures. Thus, a supramolecular chain is found in the crystal structure of (I). With an additional oxygen atom available to participate in C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions, as in (II), a two-dimensional array is found. Finally, a three-dimensional network is found for (III). Despite there being differences in conformations between the experimental structures and those calculated in the gas-phase, the S center dot center dot center dot O interactions persist. The presence of intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions involving the cyclohexanone-carbonyl group in the solid-state, disrupts the stabilising intramolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O interaction in the energetically-favoured conformation. The Mg-Ni metastable alloys (with amorphous or nanocrystalline structures) are promising candidates for anode application in nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries due to its large hydrogen absorbing capacity, low weight, availability, and relative low price. In spite of these interesting features, improvement on the cycle life performance must be achieved to allow its application in commercial products. In the present paper, the effect of mechanical coating of a Mg-50 at.% Ni alloy with Ni and Ni-5 at.% Al on the structure, powder morphology, and electrochemical properties is investigated. The coating additives, Mg-Ni alloy and resulting nanocomposites (i.e., Mg-Ni alloy + additive) were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The Mg-Ni alloy and nanocomposites were submitted to galvanostatic cycles of charge and discharge to evaluate their electrode performances. The mechanical coating with Ni and Ni-5% Al increased the maximum discharge capacity of the Mg-Ni alloy from of 221 to 257 and 273 mA h g(-1), respectively. Improvement on the cycle life performance was also achieved by mechanical coating.

The synthesis and characterization of some pyrazoline compounds of 1,3-diketones with hydrazine derivatives, namely, 1-(S-benzyldithiocarbazate)-3-methyl-5-phenyl-5-hydroxypyrazoline (1); 1-(2-thiophenecarboxylic)-3-methyl-5-phenyl-5-hydroxypyrazoline (2); 1-(2-thiophenecarboxylic)-3,5-dimethyl-5-hydroxypyrazoline (3); 1-(S-benzyldithiocarbazato)-3-methyl-5-phenylpyrazole (4); 1-(2-thiophenecarboxylic)-3-methyl-5-phenylpyrazole (5) and 1-(S-benzyldithiocarbazate)-3,5-dimethylpyrazole (6) are reported. Studies by IR, ((1)H, (13)C)-NMR spectroscopies and single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that compounds (1)(,) (2) and (3) are formed as pyrazoline, whereas (4) and (5) are formed as pyrazole derivatives only under acidic conditions. Compound (1) crystallizes in orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 6.38960(10) angstrom, b = 12.9176(3) angstrom, c = 21.2552(5) angstrom, (2) crystallizes in monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 11.3617(2) angstrom, b = 8.4988(2) angstrom, c = 92.8900(10)angstrom and beta = 92.8900(5)degrees, (3) crystallizes in monoclinic, C2/c, a = 15.9500(5) angstrom, b = 9.3766(3) angstrom, c = 16.6910(5)angstrom and beta = 113.825(2)degrees, (4) crystallizes in monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 15.228(4) angstrom, b = 5.5714(13) angstrom, c = 19.956(5)angstrom and beta = 91.575(7)degrees and (6) crystallizes in orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 5.3920(2) angstrom, b = 11.2074(5) angstrom, c = 21.885(1)angstrom . The (3) derivative represents the first pyrazoline compound prepared from 2,4-pentanedione and characterized crystallographically.

Detta arbete har syftet att undersöka varför det nationella ämnesprovet (Np) i skolår 5 genomförs. För att undersöka den frågan har vi tagit del av information och åsikter från Skolverket samt intervjuat 16 personer som arbetar i eller för skolan i en av Sveriges kommuner. Informationsinsamlandet består bland annat av två rapporter (böcker) från Skolverket. Intervjuerna är basen för denna undersökning då det finns lite skrivet om detta ämne. Av de resultat vi redovisar kring varför det nationella ämnesprovet i skolår 5 genomförs har vi valt att utförligare presentera de viktigaste av dem, vilka är; Information/Kommunikation, Likvärdighet, Lärarunderlag och Resursfördelning.Denna undersökning visar att nationella ämnesprovet i skolår 5 är väldigt uppskattat bland lärarna, provet hjälper läraren att finna kvaliteter och brister hos elever och det ger dem även ett bra underlag för att följa och dokumentera elevernas utveckling. Många lärare framhåller samtidigt att provet är krävande vad det gäller planering och genomförande. Av personal på skolor i den aktuella kommunen efterfrågades att det nationella ämnesprovet skall ligga till grund för resursfördelningen, vilket den inte gör, idag. Resultatet av denna undersökning visar på stora brister i information och kommunikation mellan de olika nivåerna i skolan. Det vill säga från Barn- och skolnämnd till lärare, via skolområdeschefer och rektorer. Vidare visar resultatet att många lärare väljer att plocka bort vissa delar ur det nationella ämnesprovet i skolår 5, vilket inte är tillåtet enligt den aktuella kommunens bestämmelser.

Syftet med studien är att få ökad kunskap om lärares erfarenheter av och uppfattningar om att använda den interaktiva skrivtavlan i matematikundervisning samt hur den påverkar elevers lärande i matematik. Studien visar att skrivtavlan används huvudsakligen som ett demonstrationsverktyg för läraren vid exempelvis genomgångar och repetition. Den tillhörande dokumentkameran används flitigt. Skrivtavlan används också för att visa film och TV-program och ibland för att söka på internet. Eleverna interagerar med skrivtavlan när de till exempel löser uppgifter i matematik. Detta sker både enskilt och i par. Interaktion mellan elev och skrivtavlan sker även då surfplattor kopplas upp mot skrivtavlan. Det är vanligt att eleverna redovisar arbeten med hjälp av skrivtavlan. De faktorer som skapar möjligheter till användning är skrivtavlans unika egenskaper och ”Det får igång eleverna”. Skrivtavlans unika egenskaper innebär till exempel funktionen som gör det enkelt att spara och plocka fram sparade dokument samt enkelheten i att snabbt byta aktivitet. Citatet ”Det får igång eleverna” avser skrivtavlans påverkan på elevers delaktighet och fokus, faktorer som upplevs öka när skrivtavlan involveras i undervisningen. De faktorer som upplevs som hinder är lärarens kunskap om verktyget och tekniska problem. Tiden är ett hinder för lärarnas egen kunskapsinhämtning men kan också verka som möjlighet då tid kan skapas för enskilda elever när skrivtavlan används i ett stationssystem i undervisningen.

Den svenska kursplanen i engelska är utformad utifrån en kommunikativ språksyn. Elever ska därför utveckla en allsidig kommunikativ förmåga genom att bland annat använda språket muntligt. Det finns dock forskning som visar att många elever upplever en rädsla inför att tala på målspråket, vilket försvårar det kommunikativa lärandet. Vad som motiverar elever till muntlig aktivitet är därmed en väsentlig fråga. Dessvärre finns det få svenska studier som berör ämnet. Syftet med denna studie var därför att undersöka vad som motiverar elever i årskurs 4-5 till att bli muntligt aktiva i engelskundervisningen. Forskningsfrågorna fokuserar på när elever visar en vilja respektive ovilja att kommunicera, vad som motiverar elever till muntlig aktivitet samt vad lärare gör för att motivera elever till muntlig aktivitet. Dessa frågor har besvarats genom elva elevers och två lärares deltagande i en kvalitativ intervjustudie. Vad som främst visat sig motivera elever till muntlig aktivitet är ett tryggt klimat och en språklig säkerhet. Elever vill känna sig säkra på vad de ska säga och inte behöva vara oroliga för att säga fel eller att andra elever ska skratta åt misstag. Resultatet visar även på olika aktiviteter som kan vara fördelaktiga för att främja detta, såsom aktiviteter i mindre grupper. Vidare kan motiverande feedback också anses vara viktigt för att främja motivationen, med hänsyn till att många elever söker stöd av läraren vid muntliga aktiviteter för att känna sig säker i sin kommunikation. Studiens resultat samstämmer väl med den tidigare forskning som presenteras i studiens bakgrund, men för att kunna dra generella slutsatser efterfrågas ytterligare forskning inom ämnet.

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) have been carried out to investigate the structure of the self-aggregates of two phenothiazine drugs, chlorpromazine (CPZ) and trifluoperazine (TFP), in aqueous solution. In the SAXS studies, drug solutions of 20 and 60 mM, at pH 4.0 and 7.0, were investigated and the best data fittings were achieved assuming several different particle form factors with a homogeneous electron density distribution in respect to the water environment. Because of the limitation of scattering intensity in the q range above 0.15 angstrom(-1), precise determination of the aggregate shape was not possible and all of the tested models for ellipsoids, cylinders, or parallelepipeds fitted the experimental data equally well. The SAXS data allows inferring, however, that CPZ molecules might self-assemble in a basis set of an orthorhombic cell, remaining as nanocrystallites in solution. Such nanocrystals are composed of a small number of unit cells (up to 10, in c-direction), with CPZ aggregation numbers of 60-80. EPR spectra of 5- and 16-doxyl stearic acids bound to the aggregates were analyzed through simulation, and the dynamic and magnetic parameters were obtained. The phenothiazine concentration in EPR experiments was in the range of 5-60 mM. Critical aggregation concentration of TFP is lower than that for CPZ, consistent with a higher hydrophobicity of TFP. At acidic pH 4.0 a significant residual motion of the nitroxide relative to the aggregate is observed, and the EPR spectra and corresponding parameters are similar to those reported for aqueous surfactant micelles. However, at pH 6.5 a significant motional restriction is observed, and the nitroxide rotational correlation times correlate very well with those estimated for the whole aggregated particle from SAXS data. This implies that the aggregate is densely packed at this pH and that the nitroxide is tightly bound to it producing a strongly immobilized EPR spectrum. Besides that, at pH 6.5 the differences in motional restriction observed between 5- and 16-DSA are small, which is different from that observed for aqueous surfactant micelles.

A duplicated nitrotienyl derivative was obtained as a by-product from the synthesis of a proposed molecular hybrid of a nitrotienyl derivative and isoniazid with an expected dual antimycobacteria mechanism. The structure was shown to be the 5,5'-dinitro-2(2,3-diaza-4-(2'-tienyl)buta-1,3-dienyl)tiophene by X-ray crystallography. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination of this compound proved to be promising against Mycobacterium pathogenic strains such as M. avium and M. kansasei, although it had a high level of mutagenicity, as observed in mutagenic activity tests. We present the structural, electronic structure and magnetic studies of Ni doped SmFeO3. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirm the single phase nature of the samples having orthorhombic Pbnm structure and the unit-cell volume is decreasing with the increase of Ni concentration. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies on O K. Fe L-3.2, Ni L-3.2 and Sm M-5.4 edges of SmFe1-xNixO3 (x <= 0.5) samples along with the reference compounds revealed the homo-valence state of Fe and Ni in these materials. From magnetization studies it has been observed the materials exhibit ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic sub-lattices, which are strongly dependent on the thermo-magnetic state of the system. The structural, electronic structure and magnetic properties of Ni doped GdFeO3 perovskite materials have been studied. A decreasing trend in volume with the increasing Ni concentration without any structural change is confirmed from X-ray diffraction studies. The electronic structural studies show that the competing ions within the ensemble have +3 oxidation states, which includes the Gd, Fe and Ni ions, and also confirms the octahedral symmetry of the Fe/Ni ions. The magnetic properties clearly depict that the Ni doping can tailor the phase transitions arising due to temperature/field dependence having a heavy impact on spin dynamics. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The catalytic cracking of triglycerides presents itself as a possible alternative to the production of biofuels with low emission of pollutants. In this work were synthesized the SAPO-5, the catalysts for the cracking reaction of soybean oil is presented. The solids were powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The analyses indicated that the synthesis method has employed to obtain materials with high surface area and high acid. The soybean oil thermal and thermal catalytic cracking, realized from the room temperature to 450 ºC in a simple distillation system, has allowed obtaining two liquid fractions, each consisting of two phases, one aqueous and another organic, organic liquid (OL). The OL obtained from first fractions has shown high acid index, even in the thermal catalytic process. The products obtained in the cracking of soybean oil were analyzed by distillation, acid number, infra-red spectroscopy, density, viscosity, carbon residue, cetane number determination and characterization. The analysis of the products obtained in the presence and in the absence of the SAPO-5 permitted to conclude that all the solids tested presented catalytic activity in the deoxygenation of final products only at the second step of the cracking process
