Introduction: Walking programmes are recommended as part of the initial treatment for intermittent claudication (IC). However, for many patients factors such as frailty, the severe leg discomfort associated with walking and safety concerns about exercising in public areas reduce compliance to such prescription. Thus, there is a need to identify a mode of exercise that provides the same benefits as regular walking while also offering convenience and comfort for these patients. The present study aims to provide evidence for the first time of the efficacy of a supervised cycle training programme compared with a conventional walking programme for the treatment of IC. Methods: Thus far 33 patients have been randomized to: a treadmill-training group (n = 12); a cycle-training group (n = 11); or a control group (n = 10). Training groups participated in three sessions of supervised training per week for a period of 6 weeks. Control patients received no experimental intervention. Maximal incremental treadmill testing was performed at baseline and after the 6 weeks of training. Measures included pain-free (PFWT) and maximal walking time (MWT), continuous heart rate and gas-analysis recording, and ankle-brachial index assessment. Results: In the treadmill trained group MWT increased significantly from 1016.7 523.7 to 1255.2 432.2 s (P < 0.05). MWT tended to increase with cycle training (848.72 333.18 to 939.54 350.35 s, P = 0.14), and remained unchanged in the control group (1555.1 683.23 to 1534.7 689.87 s). For PFWT, there was a non-significant increase in the treadmill-training group from 414.4 262.3 to 592.9 381.9 s, while both the cycle training and control groups displayed no significant change in this time (226.7 147.1 s to 192.3 56.8 and 499.4 503.7 s to 466.0 526.1 s, respectively). Conclusions: These preliminary results might suggest that, unlike treadmill walking, cycling has no clear effect on walking performance in patients with IC. Thus the current recommendations promoting walking based programmes appear appropriate. The present study was funded by the National Heart Foundation of Australia.

A inauguração de um olhar humano do índio tupinambá, eis o que encontramos em Jean de Léry (1534-1611), um teólogo e missionário huguenote que aporta em terras brasileiras no século XVI com o propósito de auxiliar na implantação de uma colônia francesa e de pregar o evangelho, tanto aos franceses que aqui estavam, quanto aos índios tupinambás. O viajante em sua obra História de uma Viagem feita à Terra do Brasil, também chamada América apresenta um olhar humano do Outro que, além disto, também se apresenta como uma possibilidade de compreensão do mesmo. Os motivos que constroem esta perspectiva é o que analisamos neste trabalho, a partir do conceito de heterologia proposto por Michel de Certeau. Nossa tese afirma que esta hermenêutica do Outro em Jean de Léry é determinada pelo sistema de pensamento teológico calvinista. A circularidade hermenêutica do viajante francês está condicionada a Escritura Sagrada, dela parte, a ela retorna. A heterologia proposta por Jean de Léry se constitui em uma ciência do Outro construída a partir do sistema de pensamento teológico calvinista.

This review provides an insight into the various opportunities for vaccine intervention, analysis of strategies for vaccine development, vaccine ability to modulate immune responses and resultant rational vaccine design. In addition, wider aspects are considered, such as biotechnological advances, advances in immunological understanding and host-pathogen interactions. The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set includes properties of seawater, particulate matter and dissolved matter from physical, optical and imaging sensors mounted on a vertical sampling system (Rosette) used during the 2009-2013 tara Oceans Expedition. It comprised 2 pairs of conductivity and temperature sensors (SEABIRD components), and a complete set of WEtLabs optical sensors, including chrorophyll and CDOM fluorometers, a 25 cm transmissiometer, and a one-wavelength backscatter meter. In addition, a SATLANTIC ISUS nitrate sensor and a Hydroptic Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) were mounted on the rosette. In the Arctic Ocean and Arctic Seas (2013), a second oxygen sensor (SBE43) and a four frequency Aquascat acoustic profiler were added. The system was powered on specific Li-Ion batteries and data were self-recorded at 24HZ. Sensors have all been factory calibrated before, during and after the four year program. Oxygen was validated using climatologies (WOA09). Nitrate and Fluorescence data were adjusted with discrete measurements from Niskin bottles mounted on the Rosette, and optical darks were performed monthly on board. A total of 839 quality checked vertical profiles were made during the tara Oceans expedition 2009-2013.
