The synthesis and NMR analysis of seven new 4-(aryl)amino-5-carboethoxy-1,3-dimethyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4- b]pyridines (7-13) are described. The synthetic approach used involved the preparation of intermediates 5-aminopyrazol (4), the enamine derivative (5) and the 4-chloro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine (6). Compounds (7-13) were obtained by treatment of 6 with the desired aniline. The structures of new heterocyclic compounds and their precursors intermediates were assigned on the basis of spectral analysis including 1D and 2D NMR experiments [¹H; 13C{¹H} and DEPT; ¹H x ¹H - COSY; ¹H x13C - COSY, nJ CH, n = 1, 2 or 3 (HETECOR and COLOC)].

This paper describes a chromatographic method to fractionate volatile oils and to identify their sesquiterpenic constituents. The fractionation process includes flash chromatography over silica gel and chromatography over silica gel/AgNO3, utilising pentane, CH2Cl2 and/or acetone as eluents. GC chromatograms were obtained in order to get the relative percentage of each constituent in the volatile oils, to get the retention time value of them as well as to analyse and combine the fractions eluted from the columns. Such procedure afford mixtures of sesquiterpenes which are analysed by GC/MS, 13C and ¹H NMR.

The flowers of Stiffitia chrysantha Mikam(Asteraceae) contain eriodictiol, quercetin, luteolin and b-D-glycopyranosil-sitosterol. These compounds and its derivatives were identified by their 1H and 13C NMR, infra-red and mass spectra data. The heteronuclear 2D NMR were used to confirm the assignments of the proton and carbon chemical shifts, it was used to eliminate definitively the ambiguous correlation reported in the literature for C-5 and C-9 of quercetin and C-23 and C-25 of b-D-glycopyranosil-sitosterol.

A new approach for teaching in basic experimental organic chemistry is presented. Experimental work goes on parallel to theoretical lectures leading to an immediate application of theoretical concepts transmitted therein. One day/week is dedicated exclusively to the organic laboratory. Reactions are proposed as problems to be solved; the student has to deduce the structure of the product on the basis of his observations, the analytical data and his mechanistical knowledge. 70 different experiments, divided in 7 thematical chapters, are presented. All experiments require the analysis and discussion of 1H and 13C NMR, IR and UV spectra. Additional questions about each reaction have to be answered by the student in his written report. Laboratory safety is garanteed by the exclusion or substitution of hazardous and toxic reagents. Microscale preparations are adopted in most cases to lower the cost of materials and the amount of waste. Recycling of many reaction products as starting materials in other experiments reduces the need for commercial reagents and allows the execution of longer reaction sequences. Only unexpensive standard laboratory equipment and simple glassware are required. All experiments include instructions for the save treatment or disposal of chemical waste.

This work describes the syntheses of O-protected aminoglycosides as an important block building for the preparation of potential bioactive pseudodisaccharide. The new O-protected methyl 3-amino-3-deoxy-alpha-D-glycopyranoside 4 and methyl 2-amino-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glycopyranoside 5 were prepared, respectively, in five and four steps. All compounds were obtained in good yield and characterized by spectral data (¹H and 13C NMR, MS, IR) and elemental analysis.

Eight triterpenes, maniladiol, breine, ursa-9(11):12-dien-3beta-ol, oleana-9(11):12-dien-3beta-ol, 3alpha-hydroxy-tirucalla-8,24-dien-21-oic acid, 3alpha-hydroxy-tirucalla-7,24-dien-21-oic, alpha and beta amyrines were isolated as binary mixtures obtained from the chloroform extract of the oil-resin of Protium heptaphyllum March. The identification of the compounds was based mainly in 13C NMR data and mass spectra. The diene and the tetracyclic acid triterpenes were not reported before in the literature as constituents of the studied resin.

The phytochemical studies of the plant stem bark have led to the isolation of (22E)-stigmasta-7,22-dien-3beta-ol, 24alpha(S)-ethyl-5alpha-colesta-7,trans-22-dien-3-one, D-friedoolean-14-en-3beta-ol, D-friedoolean-14-en-3-one and D-friedoolean-14-en-3alpha-ol along with stigmasterol, alpha-amyrin, beta-amyrin, lupeol, 3alpha-hidroxi-lupeol and betulinic acid. The structures of these compounds were identified by IR, GC/MS, ¹H and 13C NMR spectral analysis and comparison with literature data.

Chalcone (1) and its fluorinated derivatives 2-4, as well as their cyclic analogues 5-10, were synthesized through an aldol condensation reaction between the corresponding ketone and aldehyde. These compounds were characterized by IR, EIMS and ¹H and 13C NMR spectral data. Modern NMR techniques allowed us to conclude that the compounds obtained show E configuration. These techniques were also employed to investigate the equilibrium involving the s-cis and s-trans conformations of 1-4, with this equilibrium being dependent on the fluorine substitution on both aromatic rings, A or B. IR studies indicated that the yield of the s-cis conformation in the fluorinated derivatives is 57.4±1.4; 88.1±0.4 and 66.4±0.7%, for 2, 3 and 4, respectively, based on previous ¹H NMR calculations for chalcone. Theoretical calculations, using the MMX method, were employed to justify the variation of chemical shifts for the fluorinated derivatives and cyclic analogues. These chemical shifts are consequence of the anisotropic effect showed by the carbonyl group on these compounds.

A monoterpene, 3beta,6beta-dihydroxy-p-menth-1-ene has been isolated from the seeds of Xylopia sericea along with four kaurane, one beyerene, one atisene and four trachylobane diterpenoids, including the trachyloban-18- and 19-methyl esters. The X-ray crystal structure of methyl ent-trachyloban-18-oate was determined in order to make an unambiguous distinction between the 18- and 19-esters. The 13C NMR data for ent-15alpha-hydroxy-trachyloban-19-oic acid has been revised.

From the hexane extract of leaves, stem and roots, of Vellozia aff. carunculares, fourteen cleistanthane diterpenoids were detected by HRGC-MS, through the analysis of their fragmentation patterns. Comparison of their MS spectra with those of authentic standards previously isolated from other species of the family Velloziaceae allowed the identification, with a high degree of confidence, of eigth known cleistanthane diterpenoids. Of these, four were isolated and identified from their MS, IR and ¹H and 13C NMR spectra, as the known cleistantha-8,11,13-trien-7-one, cleistantha-8,11,13-trien-3,7-dione, cleistantha-1,8,11,13-tetraen-3,7-dione and the first reported 6-alpha-hydroxy-cleistantha-8,11,13-trien-7-one. The triterpenoid beta-amyrin was also isolated.

Some aspects of the chemistry involved in the preparation and characterization of functionalized silicon oxide by sol-gel method are considered in this work. The synthesis was performed with different silicon alcoxide precursors and the influence of the acid and basic catalyst was investigated. Characterization was performed by infrared absorption spectroscopy, elemental analysis and 29Si NMR. Infrared data show Si-C and -CH2- vibrational modes at 1250 to 1280 and 2920 to 2940 cm-1, respectively. The elemental analysis confirmed the presence of organic groups in the inorganic silica network. 29Si NMR results show different hydrolisys depending on the acid or base catalysis.
