Deep-sea deposits, which resemble in nearly every respect the deep-sea oozes have been observed in many islands of the East-Indian Archipelago, notably the islands of Borneo, Rotti and Timor. Manganese nodules are found in equivalents of deeep-sea red clays on Timor and Rotti island. In this paper, those relative to red clay deposits dating from a Cretaceous ocean are analysed in detail in the vicinity of the town of Niki Niki in Western Timor.

One of the expected scientific results of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 167 was to reconstruct the Neogene history of biogenic calcium carbonate accumulation in the northeastern Pacific along the California margin (Lyle, Koizumi, Richter, et al., 1997). This aims to constrain inorganic carbon burial rates, deep-water hydrography in the North Pacific, and linkages between deep Atlantic and Pacific circulation and carbonate accumulation or dissolution patterns. Data are presented for four sites. Two of them are located in the California bight-East Cortez Basin (Site 1012: 32°16.970?N 118°23.024?W, 1773 m) and San Nicholas Basin (Site 1013: 32°48.040??, 118°53.992?W, 1564 m). The others are the dedicated Hole 1017E at Site 1017 (34°32.099?N, 121°6.430?W, 955 m) and Site 1019 in the Eel River Basin (41¢X40.972?N, 124°55.975?W, 977 m). Reconstruction of paleo-sea-surface temperatures (SST) by determining the alkenone unsaturation index of the extractable organic matter is an independent technique and helps to verify oxygen-isotope-based estimates. Results from the uppermost 600 cm of the dedicated Hole 1017E are expected to reveal the local temperature history of the last 30 k.y.

An integrated instrument package for measuring and understanding the surface radiation budget of sea ice is presented, along with results from its first deployment. The setup simultaneously measures broadband fluxes of upwelling and downwelling terrestrial and solar radiation (four components separately), spectral fluxes of incident and reflected solar radiation, and supporting data such as air temperature and humidity, surface temperature, and location (GPS), in addition to photographing the sky and observed surface during each measurement. The instruments are mounted on a small sled, allowing measurements of the radiation budget to be made at many locations in the study area to see the effect of small-scale surface processes on the large-scale radiation budget. Such observations have many applications, from calibration and validation of remote sensing products to improving our understanding of surface processes that affect atmosphere-snow-ice interactions and drive feedbacks, ultimately leading to the potential to improve climate modelling of ice-covered regions of the ocean. The photographs, spectral data, and other observations allow for improved analysis of the broadband data. An example of this is shown by using the observations made during a partly cloudy day, which show erratic variations due to passing clouds, and creating a careful estimate of what the radiation budget along the observed line would have been under uniform sky conditions, clear or overcast. Other data from the setup's first deployment, in June 2011 on fast ice near Point Barrow, Alaska, are also shown; these illustrate the rapid changes of the radiation budget during a cold period that led to refreezing and new snow well into the melt season.

Times of vein mineral deposition in the ocean crust have been determined both by Rb-Sr isochron ages of vein smectites and by comparison of 87Sr/86Sr ratios of vein calcites with the known variations of seawater 87Sr/86Sr ratio with time. Results from drilling sites 105, 332B and 418A, Atlantic Ocean, which have basement formation ages of 155 m.y., 3.5 m.y., and 110 m.y., respectively, show that vein deposition is essenrially complete within 5-10 m.y. after formation of the basaltic crust. This provids direct evidence that hydrothermal circulation of sea-water through the oceanic crust is an important process for only 5-10 m.y. after crust formation.

The causes for rising temperatures along the Antarctic Peninsula during the late Holocene have been debated, particularly in light of instrumental records of warming over the past decades (Russell and McGregor, 2010, doi:10.1007/s10584-009-9673-4). Suggested mechanisms range from upwelling of warm deep waters onto the continental shelf in response to variations in the westerly winds (Bentley et al., 2009, doi:10.1177/0959683608096603), to an influence of El Niño-Southern Oscillation on sea surface temperatures (Shevenell et al., 2011, doi:10.1038/nature09751). Here, we present a record of Holocene glacial ice discharge, derived from the oxygen isotope composition of marine diatoms from Palmer Deep along the west Antarctic Peninsula continental margin. We assess atmospheric versus oceanic influences on glacial discharge at this location, using analyses of diatom geochemistry to reconstruct atmospherically forced glacial ice discharge and diatom assemblage (Taylor and Sjunneskog, 2002, doi:10.1029/2000PA000564) ecology to investigate the oceanic environment. We show that two processes of atmospheric forcing-an increasing occurrence of La Niña events (Makou et al., 2010, doi:10.1130/G30366.1) and rising levels of summer insolation-had a stronger influence during the late Holocene than oceanic processes driven by southern westerly winds and upwelling of upper Circumpolar Deepwater. Given that the evolution of El Niño-Southern Oscillation under global warming is uncertain (Yeh et al., 2009, doi:10.1038/nature08316), its future impacts on the climatically sensitive system of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet remain to be established.
