Infrared correlation functions, have been obtained from the analysis of band shapes of the 1400 cm−1 bending mode of NH4Cl, NH4Br and NH4I in both the Pm3m and Fm3m phases. The NH 4 + ion seems to undergo relatively free rotation in the high temperature Fm3m phases of these halides.

Dialkyl (3-aryl-l,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)phosphonate6sa -h have been obtained by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of arenenitrile oxides 5a-f to dialkyl phosphorocyanidates (4a and 4b) in yields ranging between 30% and 58%. A standardized method for obtaining cyanidates 4a and 4b has been established. The diethyl thiophosphorocyanidate (4c) is less reactive than 4a and 4b, only the 3-(4'-nitrophenyl) derivative 6i being obtainable. While the IR and NMFt spectra of 6a-i were unexceptional, their UV spectra showed evidence of conjugative interaction in high degrees between the phosphonate and heterocyclic moieties as well as a varying conjugative interaction between the heterocyclic and aryl moieties. The oxadiazoles 6a-h are thermally labile and yield trialkyl phosphates 7 as the only identifiable products. A mechanism based on the intermediacy of monomeric alkyl metaphosphate 11 in the formation of trialkyl phosphate was postulated, and supportive evidence in the form of trapping the metaphosphate with acetophenone has been obtained.

The binding of Ricinus communis (castor-bean) agglutinin 1 to saccharides was studied by equilibrium dialysis and fluorescence polarization by using the fluorescently labelled sugar 4-methylumbelliferyl beta-D-galactopyranoside. No appreciable change in ligand fluorescence of 4-methylumbelliferyl beta-D-galactopyranoside was considerably polarized on its binding to the lectin. The association constants obtained by Scatchard analysis of equilibrium-dialysis and fluorescence-polarization data do not differ much from each other, and at 25 degrees C, Ka = 2.4 (+/- 0.2) X 10(4)M-1. These values agree reasonably well with that reported in the literature for Ricinus agglutinin 1. The number of binding sites obtained by the different experimental procedures is 1.94 +/- 0.1 per molecule of 120 000 daltons and is equal to the reported value of 2. The consistency in the values of Ka and number of binding sites indicate the absence of additional subsites on Ricinus agglutinin 1 for its specific sugars. In addition, the excellent agreement between the binding parameters obtained by equilibrium dialysis and fluorescence polarization indicate the potential of ligand-fluorescence-polarization measurements in the investigation of lectin-sugar interactions.

Novel complexes of lanthanide perchlorates with 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (NQNO) and 5-nitroisoquinoline-2-oxide (NIQNO) have been prepared and characterized. The complexes have the general formulaeLn(NQNO)8(ClO4)3 (whereLn=La-Nd), Ln(NQNO)7(ClO4)3 (whereLn=Gd-Yb),Ln(NIQNO)9(ClO4)3 (whereLn=La-Nd), andLn(NIQNO)7(ClO4)3 (whereLn=Gd-Yb). The IR, proton NMR spectral data indicate the coordination of the N—O group of the ligands to he lanthanide ions.

The interactions of mesotetraphenyl porphyrin and its metallo derivatives with 2,4,5,7-tetra nitrofluorenone have been studied using spectroscopic methods. The association constants (K) for 1:1 complexes in Ch2Cl2Cl2 follow the order Pd+2>Co+2> Cu+2>VO+2>Ni+2>Zn+2. The values of K are accounted in terms of stereochemistry of MTPPs and the electronic configuration of the metal ions. The magnitude and direction of the proton NMR shifts of the acceptor and donor in the complexes and their ESR parameter furnish information as to the possible structures of these complexes in solution.

Petrifilm(R) (6410) was used directly on lamb carcasses to enumerate coliforms. 10 sites on 30 carcasses were sampled at each of 4 separate meat processing establishments (works). Coliform counts obtained by this technique were statistically analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) to select the optimum sampling sites on the carcass and to assess contamination of the carcass by gut flora at a particular establishment. There was a large variation between sites and between works. In general, works 3 and 4 produced cleaner carcasses than works 2, which in turn was cleaner than works 1. Works 1, 2 and 4 used conventional dressing techniques and works 3 used the inverted dressing method, therefore, the coliform counts found at works 3 and 4 are achievable regardless of dressing technique. Coliform bacteria were most concentrated around the posterior pelvic rim and less prevalent at the carcass extremities. The posterior pelvic rim (sites 3 and 4) had higher (P < 0.05) coliform counts than the exterior ventral flank area (sites 5, 6, 7 and 8), which in turn had higher (P < 0.05) counts than the proximal hind and proximal fore limbs (sites 1, 2, 9 and 10) across all works. With in-line routine testing it is recommended that the majority of carcasses sampled should give coliform counts of <50 cfu/20 cm2 for sites 4 and 8. The major cuticular hydrocarbons from the cane beetle species Antitrogus parvulus were deduced to be 4,6,8,10,16,18-hexa- and 4,6,8,10,16- pentamethyldocosanes 2 and 3, respectively. Isomers of 2,4,6,8-tetramethylundecanal 27, 36, and 37, derived from 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, were coupled with the phosphoranes 28 and 29 to furnish alkenes and, by reduction, diastereomers of 2 and 3. Chromatographic and spectroscopic comparisons confirmed 2 as either 6a or 6b and 3 as either 34a or 34b.

Spectral data were collected of intact and ground kernels using 3 instruments (using Si-PbS, Si, and InGaAs detectors), operating over different areas of the spectrum (between 400 and 2500 nm) and employing transmittance, interactance, and reflectance sample presentation strategies. Kernels were assessed on the basis of oil and water content, and with respect to the defect categories of insect damage, rancidity, discoloration, mould growth, germination, and decomposition. Predictive model performance statistics for oil content models were acceptable on all instruments (R2 > 0.98; RMSECV < 2.5%, which is similar to reference analysis error), although that for the instrument employing reflectance optics was inferior to models developed for the instruments employing transmission optics. The spectral positions for calibration coefficients were consistent with absorbance due to the third overtones of CH2 stretching. Calibration models for moisture content in ground samples were acceptable on all instruments (R2 > 0.97; RMSECV < 0.2%), whereas calibration models for intact kernels were relatively poor. Calibration coefficients were more highly weighted around 1360, 740 and 840 nm, consistent with absorbance due to overtones of O-H stretching and combination. Intact kernels with brown centres or rancidity could be discriminated from each other and from sound kernels using principal component analysis. Part kernels affected by insect damage, discoloration, mould growth, germination, and decomposition could be discriminated from sound kernels. However, discrimination among these defect categories was not distinct and could not be validated on an independent set. It is concluded that there is good potential for a low cost Si photodiode array instrument to be employed to identify some quality defects of intact macadamia kernels and to quantify oil and moisture content of kernels in the process laboratory and for oil content in-line. Further work is required to examine the robustness of predictive models across different populations, including growing districts, cultivars and times of harvest.

This paper reports an experiment undertaken to examine the impact of burning in spring together with reduced grazing pressure on the dynamics of H. contortus and Aristida spp. In H. contortus pasture in south-eastern Queensland. The overall results indicate that spring burning in combination with reduced grazing pressure had no marked effect on the density of either grass species. This was attributed to 2 factors. Firstly, extreme drought conditions restricted any increase in H. contortus seedling establishment despite the presence of an adequate soil seed bank prior to summer; and secondly, some differences occurred in the response to fire of the diverse taxonomic groupings in the species of Aristida spp. present at the study site. This study concluded that it is necessary to identify appropriate taxonomic units within the Aristida genus and that, where appropriate, burning in spring to manage pasture composition should be conducted under favorable rainfall conditions using seasonal forecasting indicators such as the Southern Oscillation Index

The second-harmonicgeneration (SHG) efficiency of this compound is only 1/10th of the urea standard. The observed low second-order nonlinear response may be attributed to the unfavourable packing of the molecules in the crystal lattice.

Final R = 5.8% for 614 significant reflections. The molecule, which does not possess a centre of symmetry, occupies a crystallographic centre of symmetry because of the statistical enantiomeric and rotational disorder. Latticeenergy calculations, based on van der Waals attractive and repulsive potentials, clearly show minima at the observed disordered positions.
