Nanostructure and morphology and their development of poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) and poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) during the crystal-mesophase transition are investigated using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide angle X-ray diffraction and hot-stage atomic force microscopy. At room temperature, PDHS consists of stacks of lamellae separated by mesophase layers, which can be well accounted using an ideal two-phase model. During the crystal-mesophase transition, obvious morphological changes are observed due to the marked changes in main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase. In contrast to PDHS, the lamellae in PDBS barely show anisotropy in dimensions at room temperature. The nonperiodic structure and rather small electronic density fluctuation in PDBS lead to the much weak SAXS. The nonperiodic structure is preserved during the crystal-mesophase transition because of the similarity of main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase.

In this work, crystallization and melting behavior of metallocene ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that the crystallization and melting temperatures for all the samples were directly related to the long ethylene sequences instead of the average sequence length (ASL), whereas the crystallization enthalpy and crystallinity were directly related to ASL, that is, both parameters decreased with a decreasing ASL. Multiple melting peaks were analyzed by thermal analysis. Three phenomena contributed to the multiple melting behaviors after isothermal crystallization, that is, the melting of crystals formed during quenching, the melting-recrystallization process, and the coexistence of different crystal morphologies. Two types of crystal morphologies could coexist in samples having a high comonomer content after isothermal crystallization. They were the chain-folded lamellae formed by long ethylene sequences and the bundlelike crystals formed by short ethylene sequences. The coexistence phenomenon was further proved by the AFM morphological observation.

Conducting polyaniline-poly(ethylene oxide) blends were prepared from their aqueous solutions. The blends displayed an electrical conductivity percolation threshold as low as 1.83 wt % of polyaniline loading. As demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction studies, the conducting polyaniline took a fibrillar morphology in the blend, and it existed only in the amorphous phase of poly(ethylene oxide). A three-phase model combining morphological factors instead of a two-phase model was proposed to explain the low-conductivity percolation threshold.

Noncompatibilized and compatibilized ABS-nylon1010 blends were prepared by melt mixing. Polystyrene and glycidyl methacrylate (SG) copolymer was used as a compatibilizer to enhance the interfacial adhesion and to control the morphology. This SG copolymer contains reactive glycidyl groups that are able to react with PA1010 end groups (-NH2 or -COOH) under melt conditions to form SG-g-Nylon copolymer. Effects of the compatibilizer SG on the rheological, thermal, and morphological properties were investigated by capillary rheometer, DSC, and SEM techniques. The compatibilized ABS-PA1010 blend has higher viscosity, lower crystallinity, and smaller phase domain compared to the corresponding noncompatibilized blend. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The morphology and structure of the syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)/atactic polystyrene (aPS) blends with various compositions have been studied by means of DSC, optical microscopy, SAXS, and WAXD. The results show that aPS is miscible with amorphous region of sPS. There is no macroscopic evidence that aPS forms separated domains in the blends. The decrease in crystallinity of sPS in the blends implies segregation of the aPS to the interfibrillar regions of the spherulites of sPS. The constancy of interlamellar distance and melting points indicates that the fibrillar structural units of sPS is unchanged on addition of aPS to sPS, and the unchanging parameters of the sPS unit cells mean that aPS does not enter the unit cells of sPS.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the morphology of blends of PA1010 and polypropylene (PP) compatibilized with polypropylene grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (PP-g-GMA). It is found that the morphologies are dependent on the content of glycidyl methacrylate in PP-g-GMA and the mixing time. The size of the dispersed PP particles decreases as the content of GMA in the PP-g-GMA increases for binary blends of PA1010 and PP-g-GMA. Similar results are obtained for changing the mixing time. Ternary blends of PA1010, PP, and PP-g-GMA indicate that morphologies depend on the content of glycidyl metyacrylate in the PP-g-GMA and the miscibility of PP and PP-g-GMA. By changing the content of GMA in PP-g-GMA, it was possible to introduce significant changes of morphology. A matrix removal TEM method is used to investigate the interfacial structure of PA1010/PP blends containing PP-g-GMA as a compatibilizer. This technique shows the reaction product between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA to be located at interface as a surrounding layer around domain particles. SEM observation on the interface shows that the adhesion between PA1010 and pure PP is very weak and their interface boundary is sharp. For the samples of PA1010 and PP-g-GMA, it was found that the interface was not so obvious, and the reaction between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA strengthens the interface significantly. The modification of ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) has been accomplished by melt grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) molecules promoted by radical initiators. The resulting EPM-g-MAH and EPM have been used to obtain binary nylon 1010/EPM or nylon 1010/EPM-g-MAH blends by melt mixing. It was found that the EPM-g-MAH copolymer used as the second component has a profound effect upon the properties of the resulting blends. This behavior has been attributed to a series of chemical and physicochemical interactions taking place between the two components. The interactions are due to the presence of the anhydride functionality on the copolymer and do not occur when this functionality is absent. The interaction has been confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and scanning electron microscopic.

This work deals with the effect of compatibilizer on the morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of polypropylene/polycarbonate (PP/ PC) blends. The blends, containing between 0 to 30 vol % of polycarbonate and a compatibilizer, were prepared by means of a twin-screw extruder. The compatibilizer was produced by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene in the molten state. Blend morphologies were controlled by adding PP-g-GMA as compatibilizer during melt processing, thus changing dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the polycarbonate phase. With PP-g-GMA, volume fractions increased from 2.5 to 20, and much finer dispersions of discrete polycarbonate phase with average domain sizes decreased from 35 to 3 mu m were obtained. The WAXD spectra showed that the crystal structure of neat PP was different from that in blends. The DSC results suggested that the degree of crystallization of PP in blends decreased as PC content and compatibilizer increased. The mechanical properties significantly changed after addition of PP-g-GMA. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The morphology of a novel poly(aryl ether ketone) [PEDEKmK] was investigated via polarizing optical microscopy (POM), TEM, DSC, SAXS and electron diffraction (ED). A distinct change in lamellar thickness, orientation, and spherulitic morphology was observed due to crystal melting and recrystallization. However, the crystal packing mode is found to be identical before and after the recrystallization process.

Both MI and MII triploids were successfully produced by heat shock in Chinese shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis. The inducing conditions for MI and MII triploids were optimized. The highest inducing rate obtained for MI triploids reached more than 90%, and that for MII triploids reached nearly 100% at the nauplius stage as evaluated using flow cytometry. Comparisons of survival rates at larval stages between triploids and diploids or diploids experiencing treatment and diploids without treatment were performed. At larval stage from nauplii to postlarvae, heat shocks lowered survival at larval stages even if the ploidy was not changed. Ploidy did not affect shrimp larvae survival, and no significant difference was found in the survival of shrimp larvae between MI and MII triploids. Highly significant differences were observed in the morphology of triploids and diploids, and no apparent difference was found in the morphology of MI and MII triploids at the grow-out stages. Discriminating formulae for triploid and diploid shrimp at grow-out stage were developed and could be used to distinguish triploids from diploids based on morphological parameters. MI and MII triploids of shrimp have the potential to be used in aquaculture.

Background: Red algae are primitive photosynthetic eukaryotes, whose spores are ideal subjects for studies of photosynthesis and development. Although the development of red alga spores has received considerable research attention, few studies have focused on the detailed morphological and photosynthetic changes that occur during the early development of tetraspores of Gracilaria vermiculophylla (Ohmi) Papenfuss (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta). Herein, we documented these changes in this species of red algae. Results: In the tetraspores, we observed two types of division, cruciate and zonate, and both could develop into multicellular bodies (disks). During the first 84 hours, tetraspores divided several times, but the diameter of the disks changed very little; thereafter, the diameter increased significantly. Scanning electron microscopy observations and analysis of histological sections revealed that the natural shape of the disk remains tapered over time, and the erect frond grows from the central protrusion of the disk. Cultivation of tissue from excised disks demonstrated that the central protrusion of the disk is essential for initiation of the erect frond. Photosynthetic (i.e., PSII) activities were measured using chlorophyll fluorescence analysis. The results indicated that freshly released tetraspores retained limited PSII photosynthetic capabilities; when the tetraspores attached to a substrate, those capabilities increased significantly. In the disk, the PSII activity of both marginal and central cells was similar, although some degree of morphological polarity was present; the PSII photosynthetic capabilities in young germling exhibited an apico-basal gradient. Conclusions: Attachment of tetraspores to a substrate significantly enhanced their PSII photosynthetic capabilities, and triggered further development. The central protrusion of the disk is the growth point, may have transfer of nutritive material with the marginal cells. Within the young germling, the hetero-distribution of PSII photosynthetic capabilities might be due to the differences in cell functions.

Discovery and development of new pharmaceuticals from marine organisms are attracting increasing interest. Several agents derived from marine organisms are under preclinical and clinical evaluation as potential anticancer drugs. We extracted and purified a novel anti-tumor protein from the coelomic fluid of Meretrix meretrix Linnaeus by ammonium sulphate fractionation, ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The molecular weight of the highly purified protein, designated MML, was 40 kDa as determined by SDS-PAGE analysis. MML exhibited significant cytotoxicity to several cancer cell types, including human hepatoma BEL-7402, human breast cancer MCF-7 and human colon cancer HCT116 cells. However, no inhibitory effect was found when treating murine normal fibroblasts NIH3T3 and benign human breast MCF-10A cells with MML. The cell death induced by MML was characterized by cell morphological changes. The induction of apoptosis of BEL-7402 cells by MML was weak by DNA ladder assay. The possible mechanisms of its anti-tumor effect might be the changes in cell membrane permeability and inhibition of tubulin polymerization. MML may be developed as a novel, highly selective and effective anti-cancer drug.

Species in Liangzi Lake were clustered into four trophic groups: Hemiramphus kurumeus and Hemiculter bleekeri bleekeri fed predominantly on terrestrial insects; Carassius auratus auratus and Abbottina rivularis on non-animal food; Hypseleotris swinhonis, Ctenogobius giurinus, Pseudorasbora parva and Toxabramis swinhonis on cladocerans or copepods; Culterichthys erythropterus on decapod shrimps. Gut length, mouth width, mouth height, gill raker length and gill raker spacing, varied widely among species. With the exception of three species pairs (H. swinhonis, C. glurinus; C. erythropterus, H. kurumeus; T. swinhonis, H. bleekeri bleekeri), principal components analysis of morphological variables revealed over-dispersion of species. Canonical correspondence analysis of dietary and morphological data revealed five significant dietary-morphological correlations. The first three roots explained > 85% of the total variance. The first root reflected mainly the relationship of gut length to non-animal feud, with an increase in gut length associated with an increase in non-animal food. The second root was influenced strongly by the relationship of the gill raker spacing to consumption of copepods, with an increase in gill raker spacing associated positively with copepods in the diet. The third root was influenced by the relationship of mouth gape to consumption of fish and decapod shrimps, with an increase in mouth gape associated with more fish and decapod shrimps in the diet. These significant dietary-morphological relationships supported the eco-morphological hypotheses that fish morphology influence food use, and morphological variation is important in determining ecological segregation of co-existing fish species. A Gymnodinium-like species was studied with light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, the internal transcribed spacers (containing 5.8S rDNA) and large ribosomal subunit DNA (D1-D2) sequences were obtained by PCR amplification, and then sequenced to explore the relationships within our isolate, Gymnodinium and other Gymnodinium-like species, including Karenia, Gyrodinium, Karlodinium and Symbiodinium. The LM observation showed that the species was characterized by moving in a levorotatory direction, visible hypocone, epicone and transverse groove, all of which are typical for Gymnodinium. In addition, two flagella could be found under SEM. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolate grouped with Symbiodium, rather than other relevant dinoflagellates. All results showed our isolate belongs to Symbiodium. The strain was isolated from a red tide water sample, denoting that Symbiodium may be causative species for algal bloom.
