We argue the importance both of developing simple sufficientconditions for the stability of general multiclass queueing networks and also of assessing such conditions under a range of assumptions on the weight of the traffic flowing between service stations. To achieve the former, we review a peak-rate stability condition and extend its range of application and for the latter, we introduce a generalisation of the Lu-Kumar network on which the stability condition may be tested for a range of traffic configurations. The peak-rate condition is close to exact when the between-station traffic is light, but degrades as this traffic increases.

Since the 70's, men in Switzerland have gathered in response to status changes and to social discourses and actions held by feminists. Either as a challenge or as a support of feminist ideas, men's movements have contributed to redefine, create and spread a wide range of representations regarding masculinity.

Stable isotopes of carbonates (delta(13)C(carb), delta(18)O(carb)), organic matter (delta(13)C(org), delta(15)N(org)) and major, trace and rare earth element (REE) compositions of marine carbonate rocks of Late Permian to Early Triassic age were used to establish the position of the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) at two continuous sections in the Velebit Mountain, Croatia. The chosen sections - Rizvanusa and Brezimenjaca - are composed of two lithostratigraphic units, the Upper Permian Transitional Dolomite and the overlying Sandy Dolomite. The contact between these units, characterized by the erosional features and sudden occurrence of ooids and siliciclastic grains, was previously considered as the chronostratigraphic PTB. The Sandy Dolomite is characterized by high content of non-carbonate material (up to similar to 30 wt.% insoluble residue), originated from erosion of the uplifted hinterland. A relatively rich assemblage of Permian fossils (including Geinitzina, Globivalvulina, Hemigordius, bioclasts of gastropods, ostracods and brachiopods) was found for the first time in Sandy Dolomite, 5 m above the lithologic boundary in the Rizvanusa section. A rather abrupt negative delta(13)C(carb) excursion in both sections appears in rocks showing no recognizable facies change within the Sandy Dolomite, -2 parts per thousand at Rizvanusa and -1.2 parts per thousand at Brezimenjaca, 11 m and 0.2 m above the lithologic contact, respectively. This level within the lower part of the Sandy Dolomite is proposed as the chemostratigraphic PTB. In the Rizvanusa section, the delta(13)C(org) values decline gradually from similar to-25 parts per thousand in the Upper Permian to similar to-29 parts per thousand in the Lower Triassic. The first negative delta(13)C(org) excursion occurs above the lithologic contact, within the uppermost Permian deposits, and appears to be related to the input of terrigenous material. The release of isotopically light microbial soil-biomass into the shallow-marine water may explain this sudden decrease of delta(13)C(org) values below the PTB. This would support the hypothesis that in the western Tethyan realm the land extinction, triggering a sudden drop of woody vegetation and related land erosion, preceded the marine extinction. The relatively low delta(15)N(org) values at the Permian-Triassic (P-Tr) transition level, close to approximate to 0 parts per thousand, and a secondary negative delta(13)C(org) excursion of -0.5 parts per thousand point to significant terrestrial input and primary contribution of cyanobacteria. The profiles of the concentrations of redox-sensitive elements (Ce, Mn, Fe, V), biogenic or biogenic-scavenged elements (P, Ba, Zn, V), Ce/Ce* values, and normalized trace elements, including Ba/Al, Ba/Fe, Ti/Al, Al/(Al + Fe + Mn) and Mn/Ti show clear excursions at the Transitional Dolomite-Sandy Dolomite lithologic boundary and the chemostratigraphic P-Tr boundary. The stratigraphic variations indicate a major regression phase marking the lithologic boundary, transgressive phases in the latest Permian and a gradual change into shallow/stagnant anoxic marine environment towards the P-Tr boundary level and during the earliest Triassic. - The diverse Τ cell repertoire needs to be tolerant to self-antigen to avoid the induction of autoimmunity. This is why autoreactive developing Τ cells are deleted in the thymus. The deletion of self-reactive Τ cells occurs through the process of negative selection. Most studies investigated high avidity Τ cells. These high avidity Τ cells are very sensitive and strongly react to a self-antigen. As a consequence, these cells induce the development of autoimmunity when they target organs which express the self-antigen. High avidity autoreactive CD8+ Τ cells are deleted in the thymus. However, several studies have shown Τ cells that weakly respond to tissue-restricted antigen, referred to as low avidity Τ cells, can bypass central and peripheral tolerance mechanisms. I used Rip-mOva mice that expressed Ovalbumin as a neo self-antigen in a tissue-restricted fashion. In these transgenic Rip-mOva mice low avidity CD8+ Τ cells survive negative selection. Upon stimulation in the periphery, these low avidity CD8+ Τ cells have the ability to infiltrate organs that express the self-antigen in the Rip-mOva mice and can also induce the destruction of the tissue. The major aim of my PhD project was to understand the phenotypic and functionality characteristics of these Τ cells in a steady-state condition and in a context of an infection. To study these cells in a well-defined mouse model, we generated OT-3 Τ cell receptor transgenic mice that express low avidity CD8+ Τ cells that are specific for the SIINFEKL epitope of the Ovalbumin antigen. We have been able to demonstrate that a large number of OT-3 CD8+ Τ cells survive negative selection in the thymus after encountering the self-antigen. Thus, low avidity OT-3 Τ cells are present in a window of selection comprised between positive and negative selection. This boundary defined as the affinity threshold is involved in the escape of some autoreactive low avidity OT-3 Τ cells. Once they circulate in the periphery, they are able to induce autoimmunity after stimulation during an infection, allowing us to allocate these cells as being non-tolerant and not in an anergic state in the periphery. We have also looked at the threshold of activation of low avidity OT-3 CD8+ Τ cells in the periphery and found that peptide ligands that are weaker than the native SIINFEKL epitope are able to activate OT-3 Τ cells during an infection and to differentiate them into effector and memory Τ cells. The data illustrate the impairment of negatively selecting low avidity autoreactive CD8+ Τ cells against a tissue-restricted antigen in the thymus and shows that these cells are fully competent upon an infection.

The handicap principle of sexual selection theory states that colourful phenotypic traits signal aspects of individual quality because only individuals in prime condition can afford to produce and bear conspicuous traits. Melanin-based pigments participate in the elaboration of many secondary sexual characters and, given their role in sexual selection, melanin-based coloration may therefore honestly reject individual quality. Although the expression of melanism is usually under genetic control, in some species it is condition dependent. However, the underlying physiological mechanism is yet unknown. Based on the negative feedback link between corticosterone and melanogenesis ( melanocortins, tyrosinase) in response to stressful environmental factors, we hypothesize that corticosterone mediates the condition-dependent component of melanism. This hypothesis predicts that stressful factors induce a rise in circulating corticosterone which inhibits the secretion of melanocortins and tyrosinase and in turn melanin production. We tested this prediction by manipulating the level of corticosterone at the time of melanin production in nestling barn owls, Tyto alba, a species showing heritable variation in the degree of phaeomelanism from reddish-brown to white. The finding that corticosterone-implanted nestlings produced feathers with less phaeomelanic coloration than placebo-implanted nestlings is consistent with the hypothesis that the environment-mediated reduction in the degree of melanism is, at least in part, caused by a rise in corticosterone. In species in which the expression of melanin-based coloration is condition dependent, we now need a test showing that individuals with less corticosterone and more melanin-based signals are individuals in better condition.
