Inordinate expansion and hypermethylation of the fragile X DNA triplet repeat, (GGC)n.(GCC)n, are correlated with the ability of the individual G- and C-rich single strands to form hairpin structures. Two-dimensional NMR and gel electrophoresis studies show that both the G- and C-rich single strands form hairpins under physiological conditions. This propensity of hairpin formation is more pronounced for the C-rich strand than for the G-rich strand. This observation suggests that the C-rich strand is more likely to form hairpin or "slippage" structure and show asymmetric strand expansion during replication. NMR data also show that the hairpins formed by the C-rich strands fold in such a way that the cytosine at the CpG step of the stem is C.C paired. The presence of a C.C mismatch at the CpG site generates local flexibility, thereby providing analogs of the transition to the methyltransferase. In other words, the hairpins of the C-rich strand act as better substrates for the human methyltransferase than the Watson-Crick duplex or the G-rich strand. Therefore, hairpin formation could account for the specific methylation of the CpG island in the fragile X repeat that occurs during inactivation of the FMR1 gene during the onset of the disease.

This study evaluates the degree of segmentation of the market for agricultural machinery and equipment in the EU. We focus on agricultural tractors, the most common and biggest investment in machinery and equipment in the agricultural sector. By using country price data for individual tractor models, we test the law of one price, i.e. the existence of a common price for tractors across EU member states. We find that significant price differences exist, yet unlike most other studies we find that large price deviations are penalised within a short time. The study also shows that transport costs are an important source of price differences, as domestic production leads to lower prices on the domestic market and as price convergence is negatively correlated with distance. Finally, price differences should not solely be understood from a geographical perspective, as evidence supports the idea that farmers’ buying power is significant in explaining price differences within countries.

On February 18, 2011, Caterpillar Tractor Company, Inc. (CAT) was notified by the Woodford County Emergency Management Agency that residents along Ten Mile Creek had noticed a fuel odor. CAT personnel checked outfalls on the bluff below and the Proving Grounds fuel station and discovered some diesel fuel seeping into a ravine which continues to Ten Mile Creek. An initial investigation around the fueling facility revealed a diesel leak in an underground line that feeds the fuel dispensers. Diesel fuel is used on the Proving Grounds property to power the earth-moving equipment being tested there. At the time the leak was found, CAT began excavating to remove the source and to find the extend of the leak. The fuel had followed a down-hill slope to a ravine on CAT property, ran down the ravine and impacted Ten-Mile Creek (about one-half mile away) with a visible sheen of diesel fuel on top of the water.
