ABSTRACT Particle density, gravimetric and volumetric water contents and porosity are important basic concepts to characterize porous systems such as soils. This paper presents a proposal of an experimental method to measure these physical properties, applicable in experimental physics classes, in porous media samples consisting of spheres with the same diameter (monodisperse medium) and with different diameters (polydisperse medium). Soil samples are not used given the difficulty of working with this porous medium in laboratories dedicated to teaching basic experimental physics. The paper describes the method to be followed and results of two case studies, one in monodisperse medium and the other in polydisperse medium. The particle density results were very close to theoretical values for lead spheres, whose relative deviation (RD) was -2.9 % and +0.1 % RD for the iron spheres. The RD of porosity was also low: -3.6 % for lead spheres and -1.2 % for iron spheres, in the comparison of procedures – using particle and porous medium densities and saturated volumetric water content – and monodisperse and polydisperse media.

Construction of portland cement concrete pavements is a complex process. A small fraction of the concrete pavements constructed in the United States over the last few decades have either failed prematurely or exhibited moderate to severe distress. In an effort to prevent future premature failures, 17 state transportation agencies pooled their resources, and a pooled fund research project, Material and Construction Optimization for Prevention of Premature Pavement Distress in PCC Pavements, was undertaken in 2003. Its purpose was to evaluate existing quality control tests, and then select and advance the state-of-the-practice of those tests most useful for optimizing concrete pavements during mix design, mix verification, and construction. This testing guide is one product of that project. The guide provides three recommended testing schemes (Levels A, B, and C, depending on a pavement’s design life and traffic volumes, etc.) that balance the costs of testing with the risk of failure for various project types. The recommended tests are all part of a comprehensive suite of tests described in detail in this guide.

For well over 100 years, the Working Stress Design (WSD) approach has been the traditional basis for geotechnical design with regard to settlements or failure conditions. However, considerable effort has been put forth over the past couple of decades in relation to the adoption of the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) approach into geotechnical design. With the goal of producing engineered designs with consistent levels of reliability, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued a policy memorandum on June 28, 2000, requiring all new bridges initiated after October 1, 2007, to be designed according to the LRFD approach. Likewise, regionally calibrated LRFD resistance factors were permitted by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) to improve the economy of bridge foundation elements. Thus, projects TR-573, TR-583 and TR-584 were undertaken by a research team at Iowa State University’s Bridge Engineering Center with the goal of developing resistance factors for pile design using available pile static load test data. To accomplish this goal, the available data were first analyzed for reliability and then placed in a newly designed relational database management system termed PIle LOad Tests (PILOT), to which this first volume of the final report for project TR-573 is dedicated. PILOT is an amalgamated, electronic source of information consisting of both static and dynamic data for pile load tests conducted in the State of Iowa. The database, which includes historical data on pile load tests dating back to 1966, is intended for use in the establishment of LRFD resistance factors for design and construction control of driven pile foundations in Iowa. Although a considerable amount of geotechnical and pile load test data is available in literature as well as in various State Department of Transportation files, PILOT is one of the first regional databases to be exclusively used in the development of LRFD resistance factors for the design and construction control of driven pile foundations. Currently providing an electronically organized assimilation of geotechnical and pile load test data for 274 piles of various types (e.g., steel H-shaped, timber, pipe, Monotube, and concrete), PILOT (http://srg.cce.iastate.edu/lrfd/) is on par with such familiar national databases used in the calibration of LRFD resistance factors for pile foundations as the FHWA’s Deep Foundation Load Test Database. By narrowing geographical boundaries while maintaining a high number of pile load tests, PILOT exemplifies a model for effective regional LRFD calibration procedures.

In response to the mandate on Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) implementations by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on all new bridge projects initiated after October 1, 2007, the Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB) sponsored these research projects to develop regional LRFD recommendations. The LRFD development was performed using the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Pile Load Test database (PILOT). To increase the data points for LRFD development, develop LRFD recommendations for dynamic methods, and validate the results ofLRFD calibration, 10 full-scale field tests on the most commonly used steel H-piles (e.g., HP 10 x 42) were conducted throughout Iowa. Detailed in situ soil investigations were carried out, push-in pressure cells were installed, and laboratory soil tests were performed. Pile responses during driving, at the end of driving (EOD), and at re-strikes were monitored using the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA), following with the CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP) analysis. The hammer blow counts were recorded for Wave Equation Analysis Program (WEAP) and dynamic formulas. Static load tests (SLTs) were performed and the pile capacities were determined based on the Davisson’s criteria. The extensive experimental research studies generated important data for analytical and computational investigations. The SLT measured loaddisplacements were compared with the simulated results obtained using a model of the TZPILE program and using the modified borehole shear test method. Two analytical pile setup quantification methods, in terms of soil properties, were developed and validated. A new calibration procedure was developed to incorporate pile setup into LRFD.

Introduction: Developments in technology, webbased teaching and whole slide imaging have broadened the teaching horizon in anatomic pathology. Creating online learning material including many types of media like radiologic images, videos, clinical and macroscopic photographs and whole slides imaging is now accessible to almost every university. Unfortunately, a major limiting factor to maintain and update the learning material is the amount of work, time and resources needed. In this perspective, a French national university network was initiated in 2011 to build mutualised online teaching pathology modules with clinical cases and tests. This network has been extended to an international level in 2012-2014 (Quebec, Switzerland and Ivory Coast). Method: One of the first steps of the international project was to build a learning module on inflammatory skin pathology intended for interns and residents of pathology and dermatology. A pathology resident from Quebec spent 6 weeks in France and Switzerland to develop the contents and build the module on an e-learning Moodle platform (http: //moodle.sorbonne-paris-cite.fr) under the supervision of two dermatopathologists (BV, MB). The learning module contains text, interactive clinical cases, tests with feedback, whole slides images (WSI), images and clinical photographs. For that module, the virtual slides are decentralized in 2 universities (Bordeaux and Paris 7). Each university is responsible of its own slide scanning, image storage and online display with virtual slide viewers. Results: The module on inflammatory skin pathology includes more than 50 web pages with French original content, tests and clinical cases, links to over 45 WSI and more than 50 micro and clinical photographs. The whole learning module is currently being revised by four dermatopathologists and two senior pathologists. It will be accessible to interns and residents in spring 2014. The experience and knowledge gained from that work will be transferred to the next international fellowship intern whose work will be aimed at creating lung and breast pathology learning modules. Conclusion: The challenges of sustaining a project of this scope are numerous. The technical aspect of whole-slide imaging and storage needs to be developed by each university or group. The content needs to be regularly updated, completed and its use and existence needs to be promoted by the different actors in pathology. Of the great benefits of that kind of project are the international partnerships and connections that have been established between numerous Frenchspeaking universities and pathologists with the common goals of promoting education in pathology and the use of technology including whole slide imaging. * The Moodle website is hosted by PRES Sorbonne Paris Cité, and financial supports for hardware have been obtained from UNF3S (http://www.unf3s.org/) and PRES Sorbonne Paris Cité. Postoperative care of major neurosurgical procedures is aimed at the prevention, detection and treatment of secondary brain injury. This consists of a series of pathological events (i.e. brain edema and intracranial hypertension, cerebral hypoxia/ischemia, brain energy dysfunction, non-convulsive seizures) that occur early after the initial insult and surgical intervention and may add further burden to primary brain injury and thus impact functional recovery. Management of secondary brain injury requires specialized neuroscience intensive care units (ICU) and continuous advanced monitoring of brain physiology. Monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) is a mainstay of care and is recommended by international guidelines. However, ICP monitoring alone may be insufficient to detect all episodes of secondary brain insults. Additional invasive (i.e. brain tissue PO2, cerebral microdialysis, regional cerebral blood flow) and non-invasive (i.e. transcranial doppler, near-infrared spectroscopy, EEG) brain monitoring devices might complement ICP monitoring and help clinicians to target therapeutic interventions (e.g. management of cerebral perfusion pressure, blood transfusion, glucose control) to patient-specific pathophysiology. Several independent studies demonstrate such multimodal approach may optimize patient care after major neurosurgical procedures. The aim of this review is to evaluate some of the available monitoring systems and summarize recent important data showing the clinical utility of multimodal neuromonitoring for the management of main acute neurosurgical conditions, including traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage and stroke.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how to most effectively deliver relevant information to patients scheduled for endoscopy. METHODS: To assess the effects of combined written and oral information, compared with oral information alone on the quality of information before endoscopy and the level of anxiety. We designed a prospective study in two Swiss teaching hospitals which enrolled consecutive patients scheduled for endoscopy over a three-month period. Patients were randomized either to receiving, along with the appointment notice, an explanatory leaflet about the upcoming examination, or to oral information delivered by each patient's doctor. Evaluation of quality of information was rated on scales between 0 (none received) and 5 (excellent). The analysis of outcome variables was performed on the basis of intention to treat-analysis. Multivariate analysis of predictors of information scores was performed by linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Of 718 eligible patients 577 (80%) returned their questionnaire. Patients who received written leaflets (N = 278) rated the quality of information they received higher than those informed verbally (N = 299), for all 8 quality-of-information items. Differences were significant regarding information about the risks of the procedure (3.24 versus 2.26, p < 0.001), how to prepare for the procedure (3.56 versus 3.23, p = 0.036), what to expect after the procedure (2.99 versus 2.59, p < 0.001), and the 8 quality-of-information items (3.35 versus 3.02, p = 0.002). The two groups reported similar levels of anxiety before procedure (p = 0.66), pain during procedure (p = 0.20), tolerability throughout the procedure (p = 0.76), problems after the procedure (p = 0.22), and overall rating of the procedure between poor and excellent (p = 0.82). CONCLUSION: Written information led to more favourable assessments of the quality of information and had no impact on patient anxiety nor on the overall assessment of the endoscopy. Because structured and comprehensive written information is perceived as beneficial by patients, gastroenterologists should clearly explain to their patients the risks, benefits and alternatives of endoscopic procedures. These By-laws and Operating Procedures are designed to guide the membership and work of the Iowa Autism Council. The Iowa Autism Council is a collaborative resource that envisions its role as an advocate for children and adults living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (autism and Asperger's and other conditions represented on the autism spectrum) and their families. As such, it is committed to representing individuals with diverse and changing educational needs. Iowa Autism Council (IAC) shall have, and will perform, functions and duties as specified by law. Responsibilities include offering advice, consultation, and recommendations to Governor Culver and the Iowa legislature regarding matters concerning the ASD population. The role of the Council members is to advise, not advocate, for an individual position. Advise means to inform, counsel, recommend, suggest or guide. To advocate means to plead for your case or position, to favor an individual case or argument. The advisory Council is to provide advice, based on facts and good judgment.

[cat] El projecte que s'ha dut a terme sota el nom "El portafoli electrònic com a procediment avaluador de l'aprenentatge per a la comprensió als centres de secundària de la Xarxa School +", s'ha desenvolupat a partir de tres eixos prioritaris que sintetitzen els objectius que ens havíem plantejat:1. Desenvolupar una experiència pedagògica que impliqués la perspectiva educativa delsprojectes de treball, i la utilització del sistema d¿ensenyament i aprenentatge virtualSchool+Microcosmos. 2. Afavorir una experiència de col·laboració entre el professorat de cada centre i entre elprofessorat dels diferents centres participants. 3. Realitzar una recerca sistemàtica, a partir de la utilització de diferents procediments de recollida d'evidències (observacions, entrevistes, anàlisis de materials, actes de reunió delgrup, informes finals,...) al voltant de les formes de comprensió que es poden produir per part dels estudiants, i com a camí per un replantejament de l'aprenentatge a l'educació secundària. La recerca desenvolupada ens ha mostrat com les possibilitats de promoure la comprensió des de la perspectiva educativa adoptada -els projectes de treball- són manifestes, però es troben limitades per les constriccions organitzatives -sobretot temporals i espacials- i curriculars que actualmentmediatitzen la capacitat innovadora dels centres de secundària. Aquest informe recull els processos i els resultats de la recerca i la innovació educativa realitzades, així com algunes de les seves conseqüències per a plantejar canvis en l'educació secundària.

Rapport de synthèse : Bien que les complications sévères de l'anesthésie soient actuellement rares, des informations contradictoires existent à propos du rôle et de l'importance de l'hypertension artérielle chronique sur la survenue de complications en cours d'anesthésie. En raison de la prévalence élevée de l'hypertension artérielle dans la population et du grand nombre d'anesthésies effectuées, il est important de clarifier cette relation. Le but de l'étude était d'évaluer si les personnes hypertendues étaient à risque accru de présenter des complications lors d'anesthésies à partir de données collectées de routine lors d'anesthésies usuelles réalisées en Suisse. Nous avons utilisé les données figurant dans le registre ADS (Anesthésie Données Suisse) correspondant à des anesthésies, générales ou locorégionales, réalisées pour chirurgie élective chez des adultes, entre 2000 et 2004 dans 24 hôpitaux suisses. L'attention était portée principalement sur les incidents cardio-vasculaires, mais les autres incidents relevés de routine ont aussi été évalués. La présence d'une hypertension artérielle chronique était définie par la présence d'un traitement antihypertenseur ou par l'anamnèse d'une hypertension artérielle, combinée à la mesure d'une pression artérielle élevée (systolique >160 mm Hg ou diastolique >100 mm Hg) lors de l'examen préopératoire de l'anesthésiste. Les incidents relevés en cours d'anesthésie ont été définis a priori et sont enregistrés de routine sur la feuille d'anesthésie et reportés dans une base de données centralisée. En raison de la structure des données, des analyses hiérarchiques ont été effectuées incluant des variables individuelles (niveau 1), liées aux groupes d'interventions chirurgicales (niveau 2) et à l'hôpital (niveau 3). Parmi les 124 939 interventions, 27 881 (22%) concernaient des patients connus pour une hypertension artérielle chronique. Au moins un incident est survenu dans 16,8% des interventions (95% Cl 16,6 -17,0%). Chez 7 549 patients, au moins un incident cardio- vasculaire est survenu, soit dans 6% des anesthésies (95% Cl 5.9-6.2%). Le rapport des cotes (odds ratio) moyen ajusté pour les incidents cardio-vasculaires chez les patients hypertendus était de 1.38 (95% Cl 1.27-1.49), indiquant une augmentation du risque chez les patients hypertendus. Cependant, l'hypertension n'était pas liée à un risque augmenté de survenue d'un autre incident. Les rapports de cotes ajustés de la survenue d'une complication cardiovasculaire en présence d'une hypertension artérielle variaient selon les hôpitaux entre 0.41 et 2.25. Ainsi, cette étude confirme la présence d'un risque accru de survenue d'une complication cardiovasculaire chez un patient hypertendu lors d'une anesthésie pour chirurgie élective. Il s'agissait le plus souvent d'une arythmie ou d'une perturbation hémodynamique. Cette augmentation du risque proche de 40% a aussi été trouvée dans une revue systématique avec méta-analyse. L'hétérogénéité des institutions -qui persiste même en tenant compte des ajustements pour le type d'intervention chirurgicale et des variables individuelles (case-mix) - suggère des différences de pratique de l'anesthésie selon l'hôpital.
