The effects of atomic oxygen (AO) and vacuum UV radiation simulating low Earth orbit conditions on two commercially available piezoelectric polymer films, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE), have been studied. Surface erosion and pattern development are significant for both polymers. Erosion yields were determined as 2.8 1024 cm3/atom for PVDF and 2.5 1024 cm3/atom for P(VDF-TrFE). The piezoelectric properties of the residual material of both polymers were largely unchanged after exposure, although a slight shift in the Curie transition of the P(VDF-TrFE) was observed. A lightly cross-linked network was formed in the copolymer presumably because of penetrating vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation, while the homopolymer remained uncross-linked. These differences were attributed to varying degrees of crystallinity and potentially greater absorption, and hence damage, of VUV radiation in P(VDFTrFE) compared with PVDF.

Capacity reduction programs in the form of buybacks or decommissioning programs have had relatively widespread application in fisheries in the US, Europe and Australia. A common criticism of such programs is that they remove the least efficient vessels first, resulting in an increase in average efficiency of the remaining fleet. The effective fishing power of the fleet, therefore, does not decrease in proportion to the number of vessels removed. Further, reduced crowding may increase efficiency of the remaining vessels. In this paper, the effects of a buyback program on average technical efficiency in Australia’s Northern Prawn Fishery are examined using a multi-output distance function approach with an explicit inefficiency model. The results indicate that average efficiency of the remaining vessels was greater than that of the removed vessels, and that average efficiency of remaining vessels also increased as a result of reduced crowding.

Improving efficiency and flexibility in pulsed power supply technologies are the most substantial concerns of pulsed power systems specifically for plasma generation. Recently, the improvement of pulsed power supply becomes of greater concern due to extension of pulsed power applications to environmental and industrial areas. A current source based topology is proposed in this paper which gives the possibility of power flow control. The main contribution in this configuration is utilization of low-medium voltage semiconductor switches for high voltage generation. A number of switch-diode-capacitor units are designated at the output of topology to exchange the current source energy into voltage form and generate a pulsed power with sufficient voltage magnitude and stress. Simulations have been carried out in Matlab/SIMULINK platform to verify the capability of this topology in performing desired duties. Being efficient and flexible are the main advantages of this topology.

Improving efficiency and flexibility in pulsed power supply technologies is the most substantial concern of pulsed power systems specifically with regard to plasma generation. Recently, the improvement of pulsed power supply has become of greater concern due to the extension of pulsed power applications to environmental and industrial areas. With this respect, a current source based topology is proposed in this paper as a pulsed power supply which gives the possibility of power flow control during load supplying mode. Simulations carried out in Matlab/SIMULINK platform as well as experimental tests on a prototype setup have verified the capability of this topology in performing desired duties. Introduction: Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight is a causative factor in the development of skin damage and skin cancer. Little research has been undertaken into assessing the sun exposure linking to skin damage inside buildings or behind window glass. This project directly addressed this issue by aiming to assess the role that UV exposure has on skin damage for indoor workers and drivers. Methods: Measurements of personal UV exposure using UV sensitive polymer dosimeters were undertaken of 41 indoor workers and 3 professional drivers. Physical measurements of skin characteristics including skin pigmentation and UV induced skin photoaging were also determined. In addition, demographic information along with phenotypic characteristics, sun exposure and sun protection practice history, and history of skin damage were assessed through a questionnaire. Results: Indoor workers typically received low doses of UV radiation. However, one driver received a high dose (13J/cm2 UVA and 4.99 MED UVB on the arm). Age and years residing in Australia had a positive correlation with UV induced skin pigmentation. The number of major sunburns before 18 years was a risk factor for skin damage in adults. Those participants with fair skin, non-black hair and blue/green /blue-grey eye were more likely to have skin damage related to sun exposure. Conclusions: A person’s age, years residing in Australia, numbers of major sunburn, skin colour, hair colour and eye colour are important factors associated with the development of sun-related skin damage in workers. ‘Real World’ implications: 1. The number of major sunburns before 18 years was a risk factor for skin damage in adults. This clearly confirms the importance of early prevention. To protect the skin from extensive sun exposure for your generation should have significance for further prevention of skin damage. 2. It is unsurprising that age and years residing in Australia were associated with skin damage related UV radiation. Therefore, the general public should reinforce their sun protective measures and check skin regularly. 3. Drivers should take sun protective measures during their working hours between sunrise and sunset.

Several key issues need to be resolved before an efficient and reproducible Agrobacterium-mediated sugarcane transformation method can be developed for a wider range of sugarcane cultivars. These include loss of morphogenetic potential in sugarcane cells after Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, effect of exposure to abiotic stresses during in vitro selection, and most importantly the hypersensitive cell death response of sugarcane (and other nonhost plants) to Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Eight sugarcane cultivars (Q117, Q151, Q177, Q200, Q208, KQ228, QS94-2329, and QS94-2174) were evaluated for loss of morphogenetic potential in response to the age of the culture, exposure to Agrobacterium strains, and exposure to abiotic stresses during selection. Corresponding changes in the polyamine profiles of these cultures were also assessed. Strategies were then designed to minimize the negative effects of these factors on the cell survival and callus proliferation following Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Some of these strategies, including the use of cell death protector genes and regulation of intracellular polyamine levels, will be discussed.

The heterogeneous photocatalytic water purification process has gained wide attention due to its effectiveness in degrading and mineralizing the recalcitrant organic compounds as well as the possibility of utilizing the solar UV and visible light spectrum. This paper aims to review and summarize the recently published works in the field of photocatalytic oxidation of toxic organic compounds such as phenols and dyes, predominant in waste water effluent. In this review, the effects of various operating parameters on the photocatalytic degradation of phenols and dyes are presented. Recent findings suggested that different parameters, such as type of photocatalyst and composition, light intensity, initial substrate concentration, amount of catalyst, pH of the reaction medium, ionic components in water, solvent types, oxidizing agents/electron acceptors, mode of catalyst application, and calcinations temperature can play an important role on the photocatlytic degradation of organic compounds in water environment. Extensive research has focused on the enhancement of photocatalysis by modification of TiO2 employing metal, non-metal and ion doping. Recent advances in TiO2 photocatalysis for the degradation of various phenols and dyes are also highlighted in this review.
