A spectral-filter method is numerically demonstrated to obtain sub-5 fs pulses by using femtosecond filamentation in fused silica. Instead of employing spectral phase compensation, by properly employing a high-pass filter to select the broadened high-frequency spectra that are located almost in phase in the tailing edge of the self-compressed pulses owing to self-steepening, as short as single-cycle pulses can be obtained. For instance, for an input pulse with a duration of 50 fs and energy 2.2 mu J, the minimum pulse duration can reach to similar to 4 fs (about 1.5 cycles) by applying a proper spectral filter. We propose a scheme for sub-half-wavelength atom localization in a four-level ladder-type atomic system, which is coupled by two classical standing-wave fields. We find that one of the standing-wave fields can help in enhancing the localization precision, and the other is of crucial importance in increasing the detecting probability and leading sub-half-wavelength localization.

We theoretically propose a method of generating a single sub-100 attosecond (as) pulse with a two-colour time-gating laser field. The field is synthesized by an 8 fs/800 nm (three optical cycles) pulse and a 24 fs/2400 nm (three optical cycles) pulse with an optimal time delay between them. In our simulation, we obtain a supercontinuum with an extremely broad spectrum of 150 eV and generate an isolated attosecond pulse with 96 as pulse duration without any dispersion compensation.

A pulse-compression scheme based on cascade of filamentation and hollow fiber has been demonstrated, Pulses with duration of sub-5 fs and energy of 0.2 mJ near 800 nm have been generated by compressing the similar to 40 fs pulses from a commercial laser system. This method is promising to generate near monocycle high energy pulses. The investigations on the fecundity of cod from different areas of the Baltic Sea started in 1992. The samples were collected in ICES Sub-divisions 25 (Bornholm Sea). 24 (Arkona Sea) and 22 (Mecklenburg and Kiel Bay). This article surnmarizes the results of 435 analysed gonads from females of age groups 1 to 8 with total length of 24 - 116 cm of the years 1992 to 1995. The gonads were prepared and analysed according to the methods which were deseribed in Bleil and Oeberst (1993). The aim of the investigations is to estimate the reproduction potential of cod for different areas and years. For this reason the absolute and relative fecundity were analysed for estimating the dependence on the total length, for age groups and the weight of females. These data were estimated for the populations Gadus morhua morhua and Gadus morhua callarias. Preliminary results have shown that the absolute fecundity (fabs) is dependent on whole weight of the females. The influence of sub-divisions (SD) and years to the fecundity are very low. Additional to this data was calculated the population fecundity for the western Baltic Sea stock (SD 22 and 24). The numbers of produced ripe eggs within the western Baltic were estimated with 4055.59 x 10(9) for 1993 and 6949.85 x 10(9) for 1994.

Samples of planktonic algae from major lakes in the English Lake District have been investigated over many years as part of a long-term monitoring programme set up by the Freshwater Biological Association and continued by the Institute For Ecology. Some lakes have been sampled regularly for long periods, others less frequently or only occasionally. Windermere north and south basins, and the neighbouring lakes Blelham Tarn and Esthwaite Water, have been under observation, mostly on a weekly basis, since the programme began in 1945. During this time diatoms have played a significant role in the population dynamics of these lakes.

Sigara dorsalis belongs to a very closely related group of six species forming the sub-genus Sigara sensu strictu. Each of the six species has a distinct allopatric geographical distribution in Europe. Studies were started on a series of populations in the north west Midlands of England. All the populations examined, except one, contained only males with the typical diagnostic features of S. dorsalis, albeit with considerable variation. One pond near Congleton, Cheshire situated in a permanent-ley pasture and apparently free from pollution contained typical S. dorsalis males but, in addition, many atypical individuals. From one sample of forty-six males, all possessed left parameres with the slight point on the dorsal surface characteristic of S. dorsalis. However, almost half possessed additional morphological features intermediate between S. dorsalis and S. striata.

The proposed EC Water Framework Directive (WFD) will require member states to monitor both biotic and abiotic components of lake environments. With adoption of the WFD some measurement of fish populations will also be required. This paper describes work carried out since 1971, and particularly since 1991, on the status of fish populations in Lower Lough Erne, Northern Ireland, with an emphasis on defining change over time due to human impacts on the lake. This offers a reasonable starting point from which to develop a monitoring programme suitable for the needs of the WFD in this lake. The implications for as yet unmonitored fish populations in lakes are also determined.

The influence upon the basic viscous flow about two axisymmetric bodies of (i) freestream turbulence level and (ii) the injection of small amounts of a drag-reducing polymer (Polyox WSR 301) into the test model boundary layer was investigated by the schlieren flow visualization technique. The changes in the type and occurrence of cavitation inception caused by the subsequent modifications in the viscous flow were studied. A nuclei counter using the holographic technique was built to monitor freestream nuclei populations and a few preliminary tests investigating the consequences of different populations on cavitation inception were carried out.
Both test models were observed to have a laminar separation over their respective test Reynolds number ranges. The separation on one test model was found to be insensitive to freestream turbulence levels of up to 3.75 percent. The second model was found to be very susceptible having its critical velocity reduced from 30 feet per second at a 0.04 percent turbulence level to 10 feet per second at a 3.75 percent turbulence level. Cavitation tests on both models at the lowest turbulence level showed the value of the incipient cavitation number and the type of cavitation were controlled by the presence of the laminar separation. Cavitation tests on the second model at 0.65 percent turbulence level showed no change in the inception index, but the appearance of the developed cavitation was altered.
The presence of Polyox in the boundary layer resulted in a cavitation suppression comparable to that found by other investigators. The elimination of the normally occurring laminar separation on these bodies by a polymer-induced instability in the laminar boundary layer was found to be responsible for the suppression of inception.
Freestream nuclei populations at test conditions were measured and it was found that if there were many freestream gas bubbles the normally present laminar separation was elminated and travelling bubble type cavitation occurred - the value of the inception index then depended upon the nuclei population. In cases where the laminar separation was present it was found that the value of the inception index was insensitive to the free stream nuclei populations.

根据双中心带输运模型,对(Ce,Cu)∶LiNbO3晶体双中心非挥发全息记录进行了理论研究与优化。推导了(Ce,Cu)∶LiNbO3晶体的微观参量,采用数值方法通过严格求解模拟双中心带输运方程来模拟全息记录过程。分析了记录过程中,记录与敏化光强、Ce和Cu掺杂浓度以及晶体微观参量对(Ce,Cu)∶LiNbO3晶体双中心全息记录的影响。发现(Ce,Cu)∶LiNbO3晶体非挥发全息记录中实现高衍射效率与固定效率的主导因素是深中心Cu,在记录过程中,深中心Cu建立起了很强的空间电荷场。数值模拟的结果经过实验验

采用双中心记录方案在双掺杂LiNbO3∶Fe∶Rh晶体中实现了近红外非挥发全息记录,研究了LiNbO3∶Fe∶Rh晶体在633 nm,752 nm,799 nm波长下的全息记录性能。结果表明,在使用近红外记录光时,其记录灵敏度随敏化光强的变化趋势与双中心短波长记录时的不同。通过和LiNbO3∶Fe∶Mn等传统双掺杂铌酸锂晶体的近红外波段记录效果对比,发现同时掺杂Fe和Rh可增强晶体对近红外光的吸收,获得更高的浅中心Fe光生伏特系数,从而能够在LiNbO3∶Fe∶Rh晶体中实现近红外波段的光折变全息记录。
