The tracer diffusion coefficients of the elements as well as the integrated interdiffusion coefficients are determined for the Cu3Sn and Cu6Sn5 intermetallic compounds using incremental diffusion couples and Kirkendall marker shift measurements. The activation energies are determined for the former between 498 K and 623 K (225 A degrees C and 350 A degrees C) and for the latter between 423 K and 473 K (150 A degrees C and 200 A degrees C). Sn is found to be a slightly faster diffuser in Cu6Sn5, and Cu is found to be the faster diffuser in Cu3Sn. The results from the incremental couples are used to predict the behavior of a Cu/Sn couple where simultaneous growth of both intermetallics occurs. The waviness at the Cu3Sn/Cu6Sn5 interface and possible reasons for not finding Kirkendall markers in both intermetallics in the Cu/Sn couple are discussed.

A computerized non-linear-least-squares regression procedure to analyse the galvanostatic current-potential data for kinetically hindered reactions on porous gas-diffusion electrodes is reported. The simulated data fit well with the corresponding measured values. The analytical estimates of electrode-kinetic parameters and uncompensated resistance are found to be in good agreement with their respective values obtained from Tafel plots and the current-interrupter method. The procedure circumvents the need to collect the data in the limiting-current region where the polarization values are usually prone to errors. The polarization data for two typical cases, namely, methanol oxidation on a carbon-supported platinum-tin electrode and oxygen reduction on a Nafion-coated platinized carbon electrode, are successfully analysed.

FePS3 is a layered antiferromagnet (T N=123 K) with a marked Ising anisotropy in magnetic properties. The anisotropy arises from the combined effect of the trigonal distortion from octahedral symmetry and spin-orbit coupling on the orbitally degenerate5 T 2g ground state of the Fe2+ ion. The anisotropic paramagnetic susceptibilities are interpreted in terms of the zero field Hamiltonian, ?=?i [?(L iz 2 ?2)+|?|L i .S i ]?? ij J ij S i .S j . The crystal field trigonal distortion parameter ?, the spin-orbit coupling ? and the isotropic Heisenberg exchange,J ij, were evaluated from an analysis of the high temperature paramagnetic susceptibility data using the Correlated Effective Field (CEF) theory for many-body magnetism developed by Lines. Good agreement with experiment were obtained for ?/k=215.5 K; ?/k=166.5 K;J nn k=27.7 K; andJ nnn k=?2.3 K. Using these values of the crystal field and exchange parameters the CEF predicts aT N=122 K for FePS3, which is remarkably close to the observed value of theT N. The accuracy of the CEF approximation was also ascertained by comparing the calculated susceptibilities in the CEF with the experimental susceptibility for the isotropic Heisenberg layered antiferromagnet MnPS3, for which the high temperature series expansion susceptibility is available.

A successful protein-protein docking study culminates in identification of decoys at top ranks with near-native quaternary structures. However, this task remains enigmatic because no generalized scoring functions exist that effectively infer decoys according to the similarity to near-native quaternary structures. Difficulties arise because of the highly irregular nature of the protein surface and the significant variation of the nonbonding and solvation energies based on the chemical composition of the protein-protein interface. In this work, we describe a novel method combining an interface-size filter, a regression model for geometric compatibility (based on two correlated surface and packing parameters), and normalized interaction energy (calculated from correlated nonbonded and solvation energies), to effectively rank decoys from a set of 10,000 decoys. Tests on 30 unbound binary protein-protein complexes show that in 16 cases we can identify at least one decoy in top three ranks having <= 10 angstrom backbone root mean square deviation from true binding geometry. Comparisons with other state-of-art methods confirm the improved ranking power of our method without the use of any experiment-guided restraints, evolutionary information, statistical propensities, or modified interaction energy equations. Tests on 118 less-difficult bound binary protein-protein complexes with <= 35% sequence redundancy at the interface showed that in 77% cases, at least 1 in 10,000 decoys were identified with <= 5 angstrom backbone root mean square deviation from true geometry at first rank. The work will promote the use of new concepts where correlations among parameters provide more robust scoring models. It will facilitate studies involving molecular interactions, including modeling of large macromolecular assemblies and protein structure prediction. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1 Flowering and fruiting phenologies of a tropical dry forest in Mudumalai, southern India, were studied between April 1988 and August 1990. Two sites, a wetter site I receiving 1100mm and a drier site II receiving 600mm of rainfall annually, are compared. A total of 286 trees from 38 species at site I and 167 trees from 27 species at site II was marked for phenological observations. There were 11 species common to the two sites. Several hypotheses relating to the evolution of reproductive phenology are tested. 2 Frequency of species flowering attained a peak at site I during the dry season but at site II, where soil moisture may be limiting during the dry months, the peak was during the wet season. At both sites a majority of species flushed leaves and flowered simultaneously. Among various guilds, the bird-pollinated guild showed distinct dry season flowering, which may be related to better advertisement of large flowers to pollinators during the leafless dry phase. The wind-pollinated guild flowered mainly during the wet season, when wind speeds are highest and favourable for pollen transport. The insect-pollinated guild showed no seasonality in flowering in site I but a wet season flowering in site II. 3 Fruiting frequency attained a peak in site I during the late wet season extending into the early dry season; a time-lag correlation showed that fruiting followed rainfall with a lag of about two months. Site II showed a similar fruiting pattern but this was not statistically significant. The dispersal guilds (animal, wind, and explosive passively-dispersed) did not show any clear seasonality in fruiting, except for the animal-dispersed guild which showed wet season fruiting in site I. 4 Hurlbert's overlap index was also calculated in order to look at synchrony in flowering and fruiting irrespective of climatic (dry and wet month) seasonality. In general, overlap in flowering and fruiting guilds was high because of seasonal aggregation. Among the exceptions, at site II the wind-pollinated flowering guild did not show significant overlap between species although flowering aggregated in the wet season. This could be due to the need to avoid heterospecific pollen transfer. 5 Rarer species tended to flower earlier in the dry season and this again could be an adaptation to avoid the risk of heterospecific pollen transfer or competition for pollinators. The more abundant species flowered mainly during the wet season. Species which flower earlier have larger flowers and, having invested more energy in flowers, also have shorter flower to fruit durations.

The partial thermodynamic functions of the solvent component of a ternary system have been deduced in terms of the interaction parameters by integration of several series which emerge from the Maclaurin infinite series based on the integral property of the system and subjected to appropriate boundary conditions. The series integration shows that the resulting partial functions are suitable for interpreting the thermodynamic properties of the system and are independent of compositional paths. In the present analysis, the higher order terms of these series are found to make insignificant contributions.

The unfolding of the chicken egg white riboflavin carrier protein by disulfide reduction with dithiothreitol led to aggregation with concomitant loss of ligand binding characteristics and the capacity to interact with six monoclonal antibodies directed against surface-exposed discontinuous epitopes. The reduced protein could, however, bind to a monoclonal antibody recognizing sequential epitope. Under optimal conditions of protein refolding, the vitamin carrier protein regained its folded structure with high efficiency with simultaneous complete restoration of hydrophobic flavin binding site as well as the epitopic conformations exposed at the surface in a manner comparable to its native form.

Laser processing of structure sensitive hypereutectic ductile iron, a cast alloy employed for dynamically loaded automative components, was experimentally investigated over a wide range of process parameters: from power (0.5-2.5 kW) and scan rate (7.5-25 mm s(-1)) leading to solid state transformation, all the way through to melting followed by rapid quenching. Superfine dendritic (at 10(5) degrees C s(-1)) or feathery (at 10(4) degrees C s(-1)) ledeburite of 0.2-0.25 mu m lamellar space, gamma-austenite and carbide in the laser melted and martensite in the transformed zone or heat-affected zone were observed, depending on the process parameters. Depth of geometric profiles of laser transformed or melt zone structures, parameters such as dendrile arm spacing, volume fraction of carbide and surface hardness bear a direct relationship with the energy intensity P/UDb2, (10-100 J mm(-3)). There is a minimum energy intensity threshold for solid state transformation hardening (0.2 J mm(-3)) and similarly for the initiation of superficial melting (9 J mm(-3)) and full melting (15 J mm(-3)) in the case of ductile iron. Simulation, modeling and thermal analysis of laser processing as a three-dimensional quasi-steady moving heat source problem by a finite difference method, considering temperature dependent energy absorptivity of the material to laser radiation, thermal and physical properties (kappa, rho, c(p)) and freezing under non-equilibrium conditions employing Scheil's equation to compute the proportion of the solid enabled determination of the thermal history of the laser treated zone. This includes assessment of the peak temperature attained at the surface, temperature gradients, the freezing time and rates as well as the geometric profile of the melted, transformed or heat-affected zone. Computed geometric profiles or depth are in close agreement with the experimental data, validating the numerical scheme.

To evaluate the parameters in the two-parameter fracture model, i.e. the critical stress intensity factor and critical crack tip opening displacement for the fracture of plain concrete in Mode 1 for the given test configuration and geometry, considerable computational effort is necessary. A simple graphical method has been proposed using normalized fracture parameters for the three-point bend (3PB) notched specimen and the double-edged notched (DEN) specimen. A similar graphical method is proposed to compute the maximum load carrying capacity of a specimen, using the critical fracture parameters both for 3PB and DEN configurations.

Flexible cantilever pipes conveying fluids with high velocity are analysed for their dynamic response and stability behaviour. The Young's modulus and mass per unit length of the pipe material have a stochastic distribution. The stochastic fields, that model the fluctuations of Young's modulus and mass density are characterized through their respective means, variances and autocorrelation functions or their equivalent power spectral density functions. The stochastic non self-adjoint partial differential equation is solved for the moments of characteristic values, by treating the point fluctuations to be stochastic perturbations. The second-order statistics of vibration frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. The critical flow velocity is-first evaluated using the averaged eigenvalue equation. Through the eigenvalue equation, the statistics of vibration frequencies are transformed to yield critical flow velocity statistics. Expressions for the bounds of eigenvalues are obtained, which in turn yield the corresponding bounds for critical flow velocities.

Integral excess free energy of a quaternary system has been expressed in terms of the MacLaurin infinite series. The series is subjected to appropriate boundary conditions and each of the derivatives correlated to the corresponding interaction coefficients. The derivation of the partial functions involves extensive summation of various infinite series pertaining to the first order and quaternary parameters to remove any truncational error. The thermodynamic consistency of the derived partials has been established based on the Gibbs-Duhem relations. The equations are used to interpret the thermodynamic properties of the Fe-Cr-Ni-N system.

The present investigation analyses the thermodynamic behaviour of the surfaces and adsorption as a function of temperature and composition in the Fe-S-O melts based on the Butler's equations. The calculated-values of the surface tensions exhibit an elevation or depression depending on the type of the added solute at a concentration which coincides with that already present in the system. Generally, the desorption of the solutes as a function of temperature results in an initial increase followed by a decrease in the values of the surface tension. The observations are analyzed based on the surface interaction parameters which are derived in the present research.

Mulberry fiber (Bivoltine) and non-mulberry fiber (Tassar) were subjected to stress-strain studies and the corresponding samples were examined using wide angle X-ray scattering studies. Here we have two different characteristic stress-strain curves and this has been correlated with changes in crystallite shape ellipsoids in all the fibers. Exclusive crystal structure studies of Tassar fibers show interesting feature of transformation from antiparallel chains to parallel chains.

Vapour adsorption refrigeration systems (VAdS) have the advantage of scalability over a wide range of capacities ranging from a few watts to several kilowatts. In the first instance, the design of a system requires the characteristics of the adsorbate-adsorbent pair. Invariably, the void volume in the adsorbent reduces the throughput of the thermal compressor in a manner similar to the clearance volume in a reciprocating compressor. This paper presents a study of the activated carbon +HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) system as a possible pair for a typical refrigeration application. The aim of this study is to unfold the nexus between the adsorption parameters, achievable packing densities of charcoal and throughput of a thermal compressor. It is shown that for a thermal compressor, the adsorbent should not only have a high surface area, but should also be able to provide a high packing density. Given the adsorption characteristics of an adsorbent-adsorbate pair and the operating conditions, this paper discloses a method for the calculation of the minimum packing density necessary for an effective throughput of a thermal compressor. Guanylyl cyclase C (GC-C) is a membrane-associated form of guanylyl cyclase and serves as the receptor for the heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) peptide and endogenous ligands guanylin, uroguanylin, and lymphoguanylin. The major site of expression of GC-C is the intestinal epithelial cell, although GC-C is also expressed in extraintestinal tissue such as the kidney, airway epithelium, perinatal liver, stomach, brain, and adrenal glands. Binding of ligands to GC-C leads to accumulation of intracellular cGMP, the activation of protein kinases G and A, and phosphorylation of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a chloride channel that regulates salt and water secretion. We examined the expression of GC-C and its ligands in various tissues of the reproductive tract of the rat. Using reverse transcriptase and the polymerase chain reaction, we demonstrated the presence of GC-C, uroguanylin, and guanylin mRNA in both male and female reproductive organs. Western blot analysis using a monoclonal antibody to GC-C revealed the presence of differentially glycosylated forms of GC-C in the caput and cauda epididymis. Exogenous addition of uroguanylin to minced epididymal tissue resulted in cGMP accumulation, suggesting an autocrine or endocrine activation of GC-C in this tissue. Immunohistochemical analyses demonstrated expression of GC-C in the tubular epithelial cells of both the caput epididymis and cauda epididymis. Our results suggest that the GC-C signaling pathway could converge on CFTR in the epididymis and perhaps control fluid and ion balance for optimal sperm maturation and storage in this tissue.
