Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF beta 1)-null mice die fro complications due to an early-onset multifocal inflammatory disorder. We show here that cardiac cells are hyperproliferative and that intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) is elevated. To determine which phenotypes are primarily caused by a deficiency in TGF beta 1 from those that are secondary to inflammation, we applied immunosuppressive therapy and genetic combination with the severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mutation to inhibit the inflammatory response. Treatment with antibodies to the leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 doubled longevity, reduced inflammation, and delayed heart cell proliferation. TGF beta 1-null SCID mice displayed no inflammation or cardiac cell proliferation, survived to adulthood, and exhibited normal major histocompatibility complex II (MHC II) and ICAM-1 levels. TGF beta 1-null pups born to a TGF beta 1-null SCID mother presented no gross congenital heart defects, indicating that TGF beta 1 alone does not play an essential role in heart development. These results indicate that lymphocytes are essential for the inflammatory response, cardiac cell proliferation, and elevated MHC II and ICAM-1 expression, revealing a vital role for TGF beta 1 in regulating lymphocyte proliferation and activation, which contribute to the maintenance of self tolerance.

Electronic transport at finite voltages in free-standing gold atomic chains of up to seven atoms in length is studied at low temperatures using a scanning tunneling microscope. The conductance vs voltage curves show that transport in these single-mode ballistic atomic wires is nondissipative up to a finite voltage threshold of the order of several mV. The onset of dissipation and resistance within the wire corresponds to the excitation of the atomic vibrations by the electrons traversing the wire and is very sensitive to strain.

We present an analysis of a 78 ks Chandra high-energy transmission gratings observation of the B0I star QV Nor, the massive donor of the wind-accreting pulsar 4U1538−52. The neutron star (NS) orbits its companion in a very close orbit (r < 1.4R*, in units of the stellar radii), thereby allowing probing of the innermost wind regions. The flux of the Fe Kα line during eclipse reduces to only ∼30% of the flux measured out of eclipse. This indicates that the majority of Fe fluorescence must be produced in regions close to the NS, at distances smaller than 1R* from its surface. The fact that the flux of the continuum decreases to only ∼3% during eclipse allows for a high contrast of the Fe Kα line fluorescence during eclipse. The line is not resolved and centered at 1.9368 0.0018 l = 0.0032 - + Å. From the inferred plasma speed limit of v < c l < 800 l D km s−1 and range of ionization parameters of log 1, 2 x = [- ], together with the stellar density profile, we constrain the location of the cold, dense material in the stellar wind of QV Nor using simple geometrical considerations. We then use the Fe Kα line fluorescence as a tracer of wind clumps and determine that these clumps in the stellar wind of QV Nor (B0I) must already be present at radii r < 1.25R*, close to the photosphere of the star.

Aim: Vascular disease such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, or retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy are common in diabetes. Maturity - onset diabetes of the young (MODY) describes a clinically heterogeneous group of familial diabetes characterized by monogenic, autosomal dominant inheritance that generally results from beta cell dysfunction. This study aims to assess the presence of vascular complications on Portuguese patients with a clinical diagnosis of MODY.

Subcortical volumetric brain abnormalities have been observed in mood disorders. However, it is unknown whether these reflect adverse effects predisposing to mood disorders or emerge at illness onset. Magnetic resonance imaging was conducted at baseline and after two years in 111 initially unaffected young adults at increased risk of mood disorders because of a close family history of bipolar disorder and 93 healthy controls (HC). During the follow-up, 20 high-risk subjects developed major depressive disorder (HR-MDD), with the others remaining well (HR-well). Volumes of the lateral ventricles, caudate, putamen, pallidum, thalamus, hippocampus and amygdala were extracted for each hemisphere. Using linear mixed-effects models, differences and longitudinal changes in subcortical volumes were investigated between groups (HC, HR-MDD, HR-well). There were no significant differences for any subcortical volume between groups controlling for multiple testing. Additionally, no significant differences emerged between groups over time. Our results indicate that volumetric subcortical brain abnormalities of these regions using the current method appear not to form familial trait markers for vulnerability to mood disorders in close relatives of bipolar disorder patients over the two-year time period studied. Moreover, they do not appear to reduce in response to illness onset at least for the time period studied.
