Determination of the soil coverage by crop residues after ploughing is a fundamental element of Conservation Agriculture. This paper presents the application of genetic algorithms employed during the fine tuning of the segmentation process of a digital image with the aim of automatically quantifying the residue coverage. In other words, the objective is to achieve a segmentation that would permit the discrimination of the texture of the residue so that the output of the segmentation process is a binary image in which residue zones are isolated from the rest. The RGB images used come from a sample of images in which sections of terrain were photographed with a conventional camera positioned in zenith orientation atop a tripod. The images were taken outdoors under uncontrolled lighting conditions. Up to 92% similarity was achieved between the images obtained by the segmentation process proposed in this paper and the templates made by an elaborate manual tracing process. In addition to the proposed segmentation procedure and the fine tuning procedure that was developed, a global quantification of the soil coverage by residues for the sampled area was achieved that differed by only 0.85% from the quantification obtained using template images. Moreover, the proposed method does not depend on the type of residue present in the image. The study was conducted at the experimental farm “El Encín” in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid, Spain).

This paper presents a mapping method for wide row crop fields. The resulting map shows the crop rows and weeds present in the inter-row spacing. Because field videos are acquired with a camera mounted on top of an agricultural vehicle, a method for image sequence stabilization was needed and consequently designed and developed. The proposed stabilization method uses the centers of some crop rows in the image sequence as features to be tracked, which compensates for the lateral movement (sway) of the camera and leaves the pitch unchanged. A region of interest is selected using the tracked features, and an inverse perspective technique transforms the selected region into a bird’s-eye view that is centered on the image and that enables map generation. The algorithm developed has been tested on several video sequences of different fields recorded at different times and under different lighting conditions, with good initial results. Indeed, lateral displacements of up to 66% of the inter-row spacing were suppressed through the stabilization process, and crop rows in the resulting maps appear straight

This paper presents a computer vision system that successfully discriminates between weed patches and crop rows under uncontrolled lighting in real-time. The system consists of two independent subsystems, a fast image processing delivering results in real-time (Fast Image Processing, FIP), and a slower and more accurate processing (Robust Crop Row Detection, RCRD) that is used to correct the first subsystem's mistakes. This combination produces a system that achieves very good results under a wide variety of conditions. Tested on several maize videos taken of different fields and during different years, the system successfully detects an average of 95% of weeds and 80% of crops under different illumination, soil humidity and weed/crop growth conditions. Moreover, the system has been shown to produce acceptable results even under very difficult conditions, such as in the presence of dramatic sowing errors or abrupt camera movements. The computer vision system has been developed for integration into a treatment system because the ideal setup for any weed sprayer system would include a tool that could provide information on the weeds and crops present at each point in real-time, while the tractor mounting the spraying bar is moving

In October 2002, under the auspices of Spanish Cooperation, a pilot electrification project put into operation two centralised PV-diesel hybrid systems in two different Moroccan villages. These systems currently provide a full-time energy service and supply electricity to more than a hundred of families, six community buildings, street lighting and one running water system. The appearance of the electricity service is very similar to an urban one: one phase AC supply (230V/50Hz) distributed up to each dwelling using a low-voltage mini-grid, which has been designed to be fully compatible with a future arrival of the utility grid. The management of this electricity service is based on a “fee-for-service” scheme agreed between a local NGO, partner of the project, and electricity associations created in each village, which are in charge of, among other tasks, recording the daily energy production of systems and the monthly energy consumption of each house. This register of data allows a systematic evaluation of both the system performance and the energy consumption of users. Now, after four years of operation, this paper presents the experience of this pilot electrification project and draws lessons that can be useful for designing, managing and sizing this type of small village PV-hybrid system

The history of the construction of the Gothic cathedrals is the history of the search for light. This almost etaphysical statement reflects a reality accepted by all historians both of ancient architecture and other arts. Light in the Gothic period has been described under multiple approaches such as its symbolic, chromatic and even mystical character. However, in the study of the Gothic light, no references exist to it as a physical quantifiable and qualifiable reality and therefore, classifiable. This dissertation deals with the concept of Gothic light from a new perspective. With a new analytical method, it shows that Gothic lighting is quantifiable and can be classified regarding quality. To this end, a selection of 6 buildings light samples are analyzed; the cathedrals of Gerona, Toledo, Seville and León, the basilica of Santa María of the Sea and the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. "In situ" lighting data is collected and it is compared with lighting data obtained by a program of sunlight of the 3D simulation of various Gothic original projects. The comprehensive analysis of the samples and the data introduced in the analytical method described, allows determining, first, important qualities that identify the light of Gothic spaces according to new parameters such as intensity, expressiveness, trajectory, distortion and color. It also describes the determinant factors, which modulate each of the qualities and in what proportion they do it. Once the qualities and factors that define them have been established, in this doctoral dissertation the ranges regarding different qualities are set, which will make up the final classification according to "types of light quality". In addition, this work proposes an abbreviated procedure approach to the reality of the Gothic lighting through some mathematical formulae, relating the geometric factors identified and described in the study with the bright result of space regarding the two most important qualities of the light, intensity and expressiveness. Thanks to this method and to the abbreviated procedure, the classification can be applied to other Spanish and European Gothic cathedrals and opens up the way to new classifications of historic buildings from different eras, starting an exciting road ahead in the recovery of the "original light". This classification and its qualities may in turn be used as tools to know a determinant factor when describing any Gothic space. Its contribution is intended to be a new conditioning factor to keep in mind in the future, helping to understand and respect, in possible interventions on the architectural heritage, what was the main engine to start the architectural project and which today is not valued enough due to the lack knowledge: the light.

This paper proposes a way to quantify the emissions of mercury (Hg) and CO2 associated with the manufacture and operation of compact fluorescent lamps with integrated ballasts (CFLis), as well as the economic cost of using them under different operating cycles. The main purpose of this paper is to find simple criteria for reducing the polluting emissions under consideration and the economic cost of CFLi to a minimum. A lifetime model is proposed that allows the emissions and costs to be described as a function of degradation from turning CFLi on and their continuous operation. An idealized model of a CFLi is defined that combines characteristics stated by different manufacturers. In addition, two CFLi models representing poor-quality products are analyzed. It was found that the emissions and costs per unit of time of operation of the CFLi depend linearly on the number of times per unit of time it is turned on and the time of continuous operation. The optimal conditions (lowest emissions and costs) depend on the place of manufacture, the place of operation and the quality of the components of the lamp/ballast. Finally, it was also found that for each lamp, there are intervals when it is turned off during which emissions of pollutants and costs are identical regardless of how often the lamp is turned on or the time it remains on. For CO2 emissions, the lamp must be off up to 5 minutes; for the cost, up to 7 minutes and for Hg emissions, up to 43 minutes. It is advisable not to turn on a CFLi sooner than 43 minutes from the last time it was turned off.

ABSTRACT. ABSTRACT. This project consists on design and construction of a synthesizer which is based on chip 6581 Sound Interface Device (SID). This chip was used for sound generation on the Commodore 64, a home computer presented in 1982, and it was the first complex synthesizer built for computers. The chip is a three-voice synthesizer, each voice capable of generating four different waveforms. Each voice has independent control of several parameters, allowing a relatively wide variety of sounds and effects, very useful for its use on videogames. It also includes a programmable filter, allowing more timbre control via subtractive synthesis. The synthesizer has been built on Arduino, an open-source electronics prototyping platform that consists on a printed circuit board with a microcontroller, which is programmable with a computer to do several functions (lighting LEDs, controlling servomechanisms on robotics, data processing or transmission, etc.). The synthesizer is controlled via MIDI, in example, from a piano-type keyboard. It receives from MIDI information such as the notes that should be played or SID’s parameter values that modify the sound. It also can receive that information from a PC via USB connection. Two versions of the synthesizer have been built: a hardware one that uses the SID chip for sound generation, and a software one that replaces SID by an emulator, it is, a program that behaves (as far as possible) in the same way the SID would. The emulator is implemented on an Atmel’s Atmega 168 microcontroller, the same one that is used on Arduino.

ABSTRACT. This project results from the development for an application field of wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), applied to daily life. That application will consist of a system of street lighting management, through which it will seek a reduction in energy consumption and economic cost, and a real-time management of the operative of the street lighting. To do this, a system based on nodes installed in streetlights will be developed. These nodes will communicate with each other to operate in the most optimized way possible, complementing all with a Base-station, which will act as a link between the network and the components required for configuring the nodes and collecting data from them. This information will help a website to show the end user all the information needed to have a control on the current operating status of each of the streetlights, consumption control and troubleshooting. To this end, this project will describe the current technologies related to the field of WSN and sensors, presenting applications that are currently deployed. It will be also exposed a real proposal submitted to a city council to deploy a pilot project in many of its streets. Will be described the environment, both hardware and software, explaining the algorithms used for the associations between nodes, operating diagrams in the different phases of the nodes operation, and the coding of programs that are needed for proper system performance. Finally, because the field of WSN is in constant evolution, will be presented different ideas to implement various improvements which could be deployed in the future, extending the range of applications to provide to end-users.

ABSTRACT. Searching for more efficient, long lasting an low-maintenance devices in lighting world, LEDs appear. These small devices are gradually replacing traditional incandescent bulbs. LEDs are taking an increasingly important role between the light sources. At the begining they were only used as indicators and their first use were in screens calculators, appliances, etc., and later, with the development of new materials, were progressively used as lighting devices. Nowadays a great development has happened in LED lighting with the apparition of the POWER LED or high bright. Power LEDs are allowed to extend the use of these devices as lighting sources for example for homes, street lighting, and even coming to replace halogen headlights LED lighting in vehicles of some models. That's the reason the more their lighting power increases the more their use increases too. The aim of this project is to characterize these light sources and others that can be given different uses by analyzing its spectrum. Moreover, necessary instruments will also be analysed. This study involves both hardware and software spectrometer analysis itself by modifying its software according to the interests of the project. Furthermore, optical fiber and the driver to control LED power devices will be studied by measuring LEDs characteristics and comparing with those provided by the manufacturer.

ABSTRACT The hypothesis of this thesis is: "The optimization of windows considering energy and indoor environmental quality issues simultaneously (hydrothermal comfort, lighting comfort, and acoustic comfort) is compatible, provided that the synergies between these issues are known and considered from the early stages of design ". The implications of many of the decisions made on this item are currently unclear. So that savings can be made, an effective tool is needed to provide more information during the design process than the currently available, thus enabling optimization of the system according to the specific circumstances of each project. The initial phase deals with the study from an energy efficiency point of view, performing a qualitative and quantitative analysis of commercial, innovative and experimental windows. It is observed that sometimes, high-energy efficiency requirements may mean a reduction in the system's performance in relation to user comfort and health, that's why there is an interest in performing an integrated analysis of indoor environment aspects and energy efficiency. At this point a need for a comprehensive study incorporating the different aspects is detected, to evaluate the synergies that exist between the various benefits that meet the window. Moreover, from the analysis of experimental and innovative windows, a difficulty in establishing to what extent these solutions are efficient is observed; therefore, there is a need to generate a methodology for performing the analysis of the efficiency of the systems. Therefore, a second need arises, to generate an experimental methodology to perform characterization and analysis of the efficiency of innovative systems. To address this dual need, the optimization of windows by an integrated evaluation arises, considering energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality, combining theoretical and experimental research. In the theoretical field, simulations and calculations are performed; also information about the different aspects of indoor environment (acoustics, lighting, ventilation) is gathered independently. Despite having started with an integrative approach, this integration is difficult detecting lack available tools. In the experimental field, a methodology for evaluating energy efficiency and indoor environment quality is developed, to be implemented in innovative elements which are difficult to evaluate using a theoretical methodology This evaluation is an experimental comparative analysis between an innovative element and a standard element. To carry out this analysis, two equal spaces, called experimental cells, have been designed. These cells have been monitored, obtaining consumption, temperature, luminance and relative humidity data. Measurement has been performed during nine months and results have been analyzed and compared, obtaining results of actual system behavior. To advance this optimization, windows have been studied from the point of view of energy performance and performance in relation to user comfort and health: thermal comfort, acoustic comfort, lighting comfort and air quality; proposing the development of a methodology for an integrated analysis including energy efficiency and indoor environment quality. After theoretical and experimental analysis and as a result of the need to integrate existing knowledge, a comprehensive evaluation procedure for windows is proposed. This evaluation procedure is developed according to the UNE 171330 "Indoor Environmental Quality", also incorporating energy efficiency and cost as factors to evaluate. From the first part of the research process, outstanding parameters are chosen and reference values of these parameters are set. Finally, based on the parameters obtained, an indicator is proposed as windows product indicator. The indicator integrates all factors analyzed and is developed according to ISO 21929-1:2011"Sustainability in building construction. Sustainability indicators. Part 1: Framework for the development of indicators and a core set of indicators for buildings".

To observe the emission spectrum of each of the LED has been used optical spectrum analyzer (OSA), which has been explained in detail. The Arduino programming code has been explained in flowchart form for an easy understanding. It has developed a manual to facilitate the use of system to any user, which has introduced a complete example of operation.
