By attacking plants, herbivorous mammals, insects, and belowground pathogens are known to play an important role in maintaining biodiversity in grasslands. Foliar fungal pathogens are ubiquitous in grassland ecosystems, but little is known about their role as drivers of community composition and diversity. Here we excluded foliar fungal pathogens from perennial grassland by using fungicide to determine the effect of natural levels of disease on an otherwise undisturbed plant community. Importantly, we excluded foliar fungal pathogens along with rabbits, insects, and mollusks in a full factorial design, which allowed a comparison of pathogen effects along with those of better studied plant enemies. This revealed that fungal pathogens substantially reduced aboveground plant biomass and promoted plant diversity and that this especially benefited legumes. The scale of pathogen effects on productivity and biodiversity was similar to that of rabbits and insects, but different plant species responded to the exclusion of the three plant enemies. These results suggest that theories of plant coexistence and management of biodiversity in grasslands should consider foliar fungal pathogens as potentially important drivers of community composition.

Fungicides were rarely used on hybrid corn prior to 2007, however, in the past few years, some farmers have included fungicides in their common crop production, particularly as the value of grain has increased. Fungicides are recommended for foliar disease management to protect yield potential. There also have been reports of increased yields in the absence of disease. A number of fungicides are registered for use on corn. The objectives of this project were to evaluate the yield response of hybrid corn to foliar fungicide application at various timings.

A number of fungicides are registered for use on corn. The objectives of this project were to 1) assess the effect of timing of application of fungicides on standability, 2) evaluate the yield response of hybrid corn to foliar fungicide application, and 3) to discern differences, if any, between fungicide products.

El objetivo fue generar un mapa bioclimático de la llanura de Mendoza que reflejara las diferencias climáticas expresadas por la actividad de la vegetación (fenología foliar) a escala regional. Se partió de la imagen digital del índice bioclimático de aridez P/ETP, generada en una etapa anterior a partir de una serie temporal de imágenes de índice verde (IVDN), y se recodificó en clases bioclimáticas. Se evaluó en cada clase la influencia antrópica y edáfica sobre las condiciones climáticas de aridez reflejadas por la vegetación. Se graficó la marcha fenológica anual media para cada bioclima a partir de una reconstrucción del IVDN. Las clases de clima húmedo y subhúmedo son de carácter edáfico debido al riego (oasis). Se proponen las clases: subdesértico (8,4%), árido inferior (15,3%), árido superior (24,2 %), semiárido inferior (25%) y semiárido superior (27,1%). Cada bioclima tiene una expresión vegetativa diferente en condiciones naturales. La marcha fenológica anual muestra que a mayor aridez menor es el contraste entre el IVDN mínimo y máximo, y que el momento de máxima cobertura vegetal varía de enero (semiárido) a abril (subdesértico). Esta propuesta permite extender y optimizar el conocimiento climático de las estaciones meteorológicas a través de toda la llanura mediante la expresión fenológica de la vegetación.

El sector del vino experimenta, en las últimas décadas, un vertiginoso proceso de cambio y nuevas dinámicas, que están afectando el desempeño y estrategias de las empresas del sector: internacionalización creciente, caída de los mercados internos de los países tradicionalmente productores, entrada de capital exógeno, etc. La pericia que muestre la organización para adecuarse a la nueva situación se reflejará en la rentabilidad, indicador básico para juzgar la eficiencia en la gestión empresarial. En este estudio, a partir de una muestra representativa de empresas de Castilla-La Mancha, región española con la mayor dimensión vinícola mundial, se ha planteado un modelo econométrico novedoso integrado por variables de desempeño, definidas con la técnica de componentes principales. De los resultados obtenidos se infiere que la rentabilidad de las empresas proviene de: a) su estructura societaria (mayor si son empresas capitalistas que sociedades cooperativas), b) de su tamaño (mejor desempeño a mayor tamaño, aprovechando economías de escala), y c) estructura financiera (mayor rentabilidad si en la composición de la misma priman los recursos propios y liquidez). Por el contrario, la falta de financiación permanente para hacer frente al activo fijo y una dinámica comercial más orientada hacia las ventas de vino a granel a bajo precio, reducen significativamente los ratios de rentabilidad.

La mezcla de fungicidas estrobilurina y triazol (E+T) se aplicó a 2 cultivares contrastantes en susceptibilidad a mancha ojo de rana (MOR) (DM3700 y DM3810) en los estadíos R3 o R3+R5; se incluyeron además 2 controles: enfermo y sano. Se avaluó incidencia y severidad de MOR, rendimiento, número de granos (NG), peso de granos (PG), aceite y proteína del grano. Se observaron distintos niveles de severidad entre tratamientos de DM3700 y ausencia de MOR en los tratamientos de DM3810. Se encontró correlación negativa entre severidad y rendimiento. En DM3700 los valores más elevados de severidad se correspondieron con rendimientos más bajos (2117 kg/ha). DM3810 exhibió rendimientos elevados y sin diferencias estadísticas entre tratamientos (3478 kg/ha). Aunque NG y PG disminuyeron en el testigo enfermo DM3700, las reducciones del NG fueron más pronunciadas. No hubo incrementos de rendimiento, NG y/o PG atribuidos a E+T en DM3810. La severidad máxima en el cultivar más susceptible no fue suficiente para disminuir significativamente aceite y proteína. MOR pudo ser controlada en el cultivar susceptible con una única aplicación de E+T en R3. El uso del cultivar resistente a MOR resultó efectivo para controlar la enfermedad y no manifestó beneficios adicionales en rendimiento debido a la aplicación de fungicidas. En este trabajo se concluyó que MOR no afectó la calidad industrial del grano.
