The K-user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) Gaussian symmetric interference channel where each transmitter has M antennas and each receiver has N antennas is studied from a generalized degrees of freedom (GDOF) perspective. An inner bound on the GDOF is derived using a combination of techniques such as treating interference as noise, zero forcing (ZF) at the receivers, interference alignment (IA), and extending the Han-Kobayashi (HK) scheme to K users, as a function of the number of antennas and the log INR/log SNR level. Several interesting conclusions are drawn from the derived bounds. It is shown that when K > N/M + 1, a combination of the HK and IA schemes performs the best among the schemes considered. When N/M < K <= N/M + 1, the HK-scheme outperforms other schemes and is found to be GDOF optimal in many cases. In addition, when the SNR and INR are at the same level, ZF-receiving and the HK-scheme have the same GDOF performance.

This paper derives outer bounds on the sum rate of the K-user MIMO Gaussian interference channel (GIC). Three outer bounds are derived, under different assumptions of cooperation and providing side information to receivers. The novelty in the derivation lies in the careful selection of side information, which results in the cancellation of the negative differential entropy terms containing signal components, leading to a tractable outer bound. The overall outer bound is obtained by taking the minimum of the three outer bounds. The derived bounds are simplified for the MIMO Gaussian symmetric IC to obtain outer bounds on the generalized degrees of freedom (GDOF). The relative performance of the bounds yields insight into the performance limits of multiuser MIMO GICs and the relative merits of different schemes for interference management. These insights are confirmed by establishing the optimality of the bounds in specific cases using an inner bound on the GDOF derived by the authors in a previous work. It is also shown that many of the existing results on the GDOF of the GIC can be obtained as special cases of the bounds, e. g., by setting K = 2 or the number of antennas at each user to 1.

In this study, fluoranthene-based derivatives with a high thermal stability were synthesized for applications in organic electroluminescent devices. The two derivatives synthesized in this study, bis(4-(7,9,10-triphenylfluoranthen-8-yl)phenyl)sulfane (TPFDPS) and 2,8-bis(7,9,10-triphenylfluoranthen-8-yl)dibenzob,d]thiophene (TPFDBT), were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TPFDPS exhibits a high T-g of 210 degrees C while TPFDBT is crystalline in nature. Both the derivatives are thermally stable up to 500 degrees C. The charge transport studies reveal predominant electron transport properties. Subsequently, we fabricated blue OLEDs with 2-tert-butyl-9,10-bis-(beta-naphthyl)-anthracene (TBADN) as the emitting layer to demonstrate the applications of these molecules as an electron transporting layer.

Cooperative relaying combined with selection exploits spatial diversity to significantly improve the performance of interference-constrained secondary users in an underlay cognitive radio (CR) network. However, unlike conventional relaying, the state of the links between the relay and the primary receiver affects the choice of the relay. Further, while the optimal amplify-and-forward (AF) relay selection rule for underlay CR is well understood for the peak interference-constraint, this is not so for the less conservative average interference constraint. For the latter, we present three novel AF relay selection (RS) rules, namely, symbol error probability (SEP)-optimal, inverse-of-affine (IOA), and linear rules. We analyze the SEPs of the IOA and linear rules and also develop a novel, accurate approximation technique for analyzing the performance of AF relays. Extensive numerical results show that all the three rules outperform several RS rules proposed in the literature and generalize the conventional AF RS rule.

Herein we report the synthesis, characterization, and potential application of his (4- (7,9,10-triphenylfluoranthen-8-yl)pheny)sulfone (TPFDPSO2) and 2,8-bis (7,9,10-triphenylfluoranthen-8-yl) dibenzo b, d]-thiophene 5,5-dioxide (TPFDBTO2) as electron transport as well as light-emitting materials. These fluoranthene derivatives were synthesized by oxidation of their corresponding parent sulfide compounds, which were prepared via Diels-Alder reaction. These materials exhibit deep blue fluorescence emission in both solution and thin film, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), thermal and electrochemical stability over a wide potential range. Hole- and electron-only devices were fabricated to study the charge transport characteristics, and predominant electron transport property comparable with that of a well-known electron transport material, Alq(3), was observed. Furthermore, bilayer electroluminescent devices were fabricated utilizing these fluoranthene derivatives as electron transport as well as emitting layer, and device performance was compared with that of their parent sulfide molecules. The electroluminescence (EL) devices fabricated with these molecules displayed bright sky blue color emission and 5-fold improvement in external quantum efficiency (EQE) with respect to their parent compounds.

The aim of this study was to develop heterogeneous visible light active photocatalysts using AgBr and Ag3PO4 using CeO2 nanoflakes as an efficient substrate. Ascorbic acid was employed as a fuel to synthesize fine ceria nanoflakes by a facile solution combustion process. AgBr and Ag3PO4 were decorated on ceria to prepare AgBr/Ag3PO4/ceria nanocomposites. The structure of the composite was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Novel flakelike morphology was revealed using electron microscopy techniques. The nanocomposites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light compared to pristine ceria nanoparticles. The nanocomposite catalyst particles degraded both anionic and cationic dyes. It also exhibited efficient antimicrobial activity under visible light. The AgBr/Ag3PO4/ceria nanocomposite was characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, BET surface area analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the reasons for enhanced photocatalytic activity were elucidated. The presence of silver based semiconductors on ceria has shown to decrease charge recombination through photoluminescence analysis that attributed for enhanced photocatalytic activity. The AgBr/Ag3PO4/ceria nanocomposite has shown a stable performance after many repeated cycles.

Novel BioBr/Cd(OH)(2) heterostructures were synthesized by a facile chemical bath method under ambient conditions. A series of BiOBr/Cd(OH)(2) heterostructures were obtained by tuning the Bi/Cd molar ratios. The obtained heterostructures were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Optical properties were studied by UV-visible spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). Photocatalytic studies on rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation showed that the heterostructures are very efficient photocatalysts in mild basic medium. Scavenger test studies confirmed that the photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals (O-2(center dot-)) are the main active species responsible for RhB degradation. Comparison of photoluminescence (PL) intensity suggested that an inhibited charge recombination is crucial for the degradation process over these photocatalysts. Moreover, relative positioning of the valence and conduction band edges of the semiconductors, O-2/O-2(center dot-) and (OH)-O-center dot/H2O redox potentials and HOMO-LUMO levels of RhB appear to be responsible for the hole-specificity of degradation. Photocatalytic recycling experiments indicated the high stability of the catalysts in the reaction medium without any significant loss of activity. This study hence concludes that the heterojunction constructed between Cd(OH)(2) and BiOBr interfaces play a crucial role in influencing the charge carrier dynamics and subsequent photocatalytic activity.

The discovery of a Higgs boson with a mass of 126 GeV at the LHC when combined with the non-observation of new physics both in direct and indirect searches imposes strong constraints on supersymmetric models and in particular on the top squark sector. The experiments for direct detection of dark matter have provided with yet more constraints on the neutralino LSP mass and its interactions. After imposing limits from the Higgs, flavour and dark matter sectors, we examine the feasibility for a light stop in the context of the pMSSM, in light of current results for stop and other SUSY searches at the LHC. We only require that the neutralino dark matter explains a fraction of the cosmologically measured dark matter abundance. We find that a stop with mass below similar to 500 GeV is still allowed. We further study various probes of the light stop scenario that could be performed at the LHC Run-II either through direct searches for the light and heavy stop, or SUSY searches not currently available in simplified model results. Moreover we study the characteristics of heavy Higgs for the points in the parameter space allowed by all the available constraints and illustrate the region with large cross sections to fermionic or electroweakino channels. Finally we show that nearly all scenarios with a small stop-LSP mass difference will be tested by Xenon1T provided the NLSP is a chargino, thus probing a region hard to access at the LHC.

Power densities required to operate active-matrix organic-light-emitting diode (AMOLED) based displays for high luminance applications, lead to temperature rise due to self heating. Temperature rise leads to significant degradation and consequent reduction in life time. In this work numerical techniques based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to determine the temperature rise and its distribution for an AMOLED based display for a given power density and size. Passive cooling option in form of protruded rectangular fins is implemented to reduce the display temperature.

Undoped and Cr (3% and 5%) doped CdS nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method. The synthesized nanocrystalline particles are characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL), Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Raman spectroscopy. XRD studies indicate that Cr doping in host CdS result a structural change from Cubic phase to mixed (cubic + hexagonal) phase. Due to quantum confinement effect, widening of the band gap is observed for undoped and Cr doped CdS nanoparticles compared to bulk CdS. The average particle size calculated from band gap values is in good agreement with the TEM study calculation and it is around 4-5 nm. A strong violet emission band consisting of two emission peaks is observed for undoped CdS nanoparticles, whereas for CdS:Cr nanoparticles, a broad emission band ranging from 420 nm to 730 nm with a maximum at similar to 587 nm is observed. The broad emission band is due to the overlapped emissions from variety of defects. EPR spectra of CdS:Cr samples reveal resonance signal at g = 2.143 corresponding to interacting Cr3+ ions. VSM studies indicate that the diamagnetic CdS nanoparticles are transform to ferromagnetic for 3% Cr3+ doping and the ferromagnetic nature is diminished with increasing the doping concentration to 5%. Photoactive metal complexes have emerged as potential candidates in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer. We present here the synthesis, characterization and visible light-triggered anticancer activity of two novel mixed-ligand oxo-bridged iron(III) complexes, viz., {Fe(L)(acac)}(2)(mu-O)](ClO4)(2) (1) and {Fe (L)(cur)}(2)(mu-O)](ClO4)(2) (2) where L is bis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-benzylamine, acac is acetylacetonate and cur is the monoanion of curcumin (bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-diene-3,5-dione). The crystal structure of complex 1 (as PF6 salt, 1a) shows distorted octahedral geometry of each iron(III) centre formed by the FeN3O3 core. The 1: 2 electrolytic complexes are stable in solution and retain their oxo-bridged identity in aqueous medium. Complex 2 has a strong absorption band in the visible region and shows promising photocytotoxicity in HeLa and MCF-7 cancer cells in visible light giving respective IC50 values of 3.1 +/- 0.4 lM and 4.9 +/- 0.5 lM while remains non-toxic in the dark (IC50 > 50 lM). The control complex 1 is inactive both in the light and dark. Complex 2 accumulates in cytoplasm of HeLa and MCF-7 cells as evidenced from fluorescence microscopy and triggers apoptotic cell death via light-assisted generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Taken together, complex 2 with its promising photocytotoxicity but negligible dark toxicity in cancer cells has significant photochemotherapeutic potential for applications in PDT. Engineering blend structure with tailor-made distribution of nanoparticles is the prime requisite to obtain materials with extraordinary properties. Herein, a unique strategy of distributing nanoparticles in different phases of a blend structure has resulted in >99% blocking of incoming electromagnetic (EM) radiation. This is accomplished by designing a ternary polymer blend structure using polycarbonate (PC), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to simultaneously improve the structural, electrical, and electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI). The blend structure was made conducting by preferentially localizing the multi-wall nanotubes (MWNTs) in the PVDF phase. By taking advantage of pp stacking MWNTs was noncovalently modified with an imidazolium based ionic liquid (IL). Interestingly, the enhanced dispersion of IL-MWNTs in PVDF improved the electrical conductivity of the blends significantly. While one key requisite to attenuate EM radiation (i.e., electrical conductivity) was achieved using MWNTs, the magnetic properties of the blend structure was tuned by introducing barium ferrite (BaFe) nanoparticles, which can interact with the incoming EM radiation. By suitably modifying the surface of BaFe nanoparticles, we can tailor their localization under the macroscopic processing condition. The precise localization of BaFe nanoparticles in the PC phase, due to nucleophilic substitution reaction, and the MWNTs in the PVDF phase not only improved the conductivity but also facilitated in absorption of the incoming microwave radiation due to synergetic effect from MWNT and BaFe. The shielding effectiveness (SE) was measured in X and K-u band, and an enhanced SE of -37 dB was noted at 18 GHz frequency. PMMA, which acted as an interfacial modifier in PC/PVDF blends further, resulting in a significant enhancement in the mechanical properties besides retaining high SE. This study opens a new avenue in designing mechanically strong microwave absorbers with a suitable combination of materials.

A ray tracing based path length calculation is investigated for polarized light transport in a pixel space. Tomographic imaging using polarized light transport is promising for applications in optical projection tomography of small animal imaging and turbid media with low scattering. Polarized light transport through a medium can have complex effects due to interactions such as optical rotation of linearly polarized light, birefringence, diattenuation and interior refraction. Here we investigate the effects of refraction of polarized light in a non-scattering medium. This step is used to obtain the initial absorption estimate. This estimate can be used as prior in Monte Carlo (MC) program that simulates the transport of polarized light through a scattering medium to assist in faster convergence of the final estimate. The reflectance for p-polarized (parallel) and s-polarized (perpendicular) are different and hence there is a difference in the intensities that reach the detector end. The algorithm computes the length of the ray in each pixel along the refracted path and this is used to build the weight matrix. This weight matrix with corrected ray path length and the resultant intensity reaching the detector for each ray is used in the algebraic reconstruction (ART) method. The proposed method is tested with numerical phantoms for various noise levels. The refraction errors due to regions of different refractive index are discussed, the difference in intensities with polarization is considered. The improvements in reconstruction using the correction so applied is presented. This is achieved by tracking the path of the ray as well as the intensity of the ray as it traverses through the medium.

Low temperature Raman spectroscopic measurements on silver nitroprusside (AgNP), Ag-2Fe(CN)(5)NO] powders display reversible features of a partially converted metastable state. The results are compared with similarly observed metastable state in case of sodium nitroprusside (NaNP) and the differences have been discussed in terms of possible resistance to metastable state formation offered by silver atoms on the basis of hard soft acid base (HSAB) theory.

In this study, we report synthesis of symmetrically and non-symmetrically functionalized fluoranthene-based blue fluorescent molecular materials for non-doped electroluminescent devices. The solid state structure of these fluorophores has been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Furthermore, a detailed experimental and theoretical study has been performed to understand the effect of substitution of symmetric and non-symmetric functional groups on optical, thermal and electrochemical properties of fluoranthene. These materials exhibit a deep blue emission and high PLQY in solution and solid state. The vacuum deposited, non-doped electroluminescent devices with the device structure ITO/NPD (15 nm)/CBP (15 nm)/EML (40 nm)/TPBI (30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al were fabricated and characterized. A systematic shift in the peak position of EL emission was observed from sky blue to bluish-green with EL maxima from 477 nm to 490 nm due to different functional groups on the periphery of fluoranthene. In addition, a high luminance of >= 2000 cd m(-2) and encouraging external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 1.1-1.4% were achieved. A correlation of the molecular structure with device performance has been established.
