The need for development of new materials is a natural process in the companies’ technological point of view, seeking improvements in materials and processes. Specifically, among the materials, ceramic exhibit valuable properties, especially the covalent ceramics which have excellent properties for applications which requires the abrasion resistance, hardness, high temperatures, resistence, etc. being a material that has applications in several areas. Most studies are related to improvement of properties, specially fracture toughness that allows the expansion of its application. Among the most promising ceramic materials are silicon nitride (Si3N4) which has excellent properties. The goal of this work was the development and caracterization of Si3N4-based ceramics, doped with yttrium oxide (Y2O3), rar earth concentrate (CTR2O3) and cerium oxide (CeO2) in the same proportion for the evaluation of properties. The powders' mixtures were homogenized, dried and compressed under pressure uniaxial and isostatic. Sintering was carried out in 1850 ⁰C under pressure of 0,1MPa N2 for 1 h with a heating rate of 25 ⁰C / min and cooling in the furnace inertia. The characterizations were performed using Archimedes principle to relative density, weight loss by measuring before and after sintering, phase analysis by X-ray diffraction, microstructure by scanning electron microscope (SEM), hardness and fracture toughness by the method Vickers indentation. The results obtained showed relative density of 97-98%, Vickers hardness 17 to 19 GPa, fracture toughness 5.6 to 6.8 MPa.m1/2, with phases varying from α-SiAlON and β-Si3N4 depending the types of additives used. The results are promising for tribological applications and can be defined according to the types of additives to be used

Backgroud: The influence of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) films on bacterial leakage through the interface between abutments and dental implants of external hexagon (EH) and internal hexagon (IH) was evaluated. Film deposition was performed by PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition). Sets of implants and abutments (N=180, n=30) were divided according to the connection design and the treatment of the abutment base: (1) no treatment (control); (2) DLC film deposition, and (3) Ag-DLC film deposition. Under sterile conditions, 1 µL of Enterococcus faecalis was inoculated inside the implants, and abutments were tightened. The sets were tested for immediate external contamination, suspended in test tubes containing sterile culture broth, and followed-up for five days. Turbidity of the broth indicated bacterial leakage. At the end of the period, the abutments were removed and the internal content of the implants was collected with paper points and plated in Petri dishes. They were incubated for 24 h for bacterial viability assessment and colony-forming unit (CFU) counting. Bacterial leakage was analyzed by Chi-square and Fisher exact tests (α=5%). The percentage of bacterial leakage was 16.09% for EH implants and 80.71% for IH implants (P<0.0001). The bacterial load was higher inside these implants (P=0.000). The type of implant significantly influenced the results (P=0.000), whereas the films did not (P=0.487). We concluded that: (1) IH implants showed a higher frequency of bacterial leakage and (2) the DLC and Ag-DLC films did not significantly reduce the frequency of bacterial leakage and bacteria load inside the implants.

Machining is one of the most commonly manufacturing processes used in the modern world, consuming millions of dollars annually. Because of this, it is crucial for the automotive industry to reduce costs on their heat-resistant alloy machining processes, such as compacted graphite iron (CGI), which has shown an increasing trend of its application in diesel engine blocks, brakes disks, among other applications, due to its superior mechanical properties to gray cast iron. Despite this advantage, its use is still limited due to its difficulty of machining, moreover, cutting tools are displayed as the main factor in increasing the machining cost. Seeking an alternative to a better machinability of CGI, this paper aims to study two types of ceramic tools developed in Brazil, and benchmark their performance by dry turning. For this, were used CGI class 450 and two tools: ceramic of silicon nitride (Si3N4) and alumina-based (Al2O3), with a cutting speed (Vc) of 300, 400 and 500 m / min; feed (f) of 0.2 mm / rev and depth of cut (ap) of 0.5 mm, using three replicates and starting with new cutting edges. The results showed that the Al2O3 tool had the best performance in Vc of 500 m / min, while the Si3N4 tool had the best results in Vc of 300 m / min. This can be explained by the tool of Si3N4 based include soft intergranular phase, called amorphous, while alumina has higher abrasion resistance due to its high refractoriness. The results make it clear that the tools have significant potential for machining of compacted graphite iron, being necessary a strict control of the cutting parameters used

We have explored the effects of atmospheric environment on Kelvin force microscopy (KFM) measurements of potential difference between different regions of test polycrystalline diamond surfaces. The diamond films were deposited by microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition, which naturally produces hydrogen terminations on the surface of the films formed. Selected regions were patterned by electron-beam lithography and chemical terminations of oxygen or fluorine were created by exposure to an oxygen or fluorine plasma source. For KFM imaging, the samples were mounted in a hood with a constant flow of helium gas. Successive images were taken over a 5-h period showing the effect of the environment on KFM imaging. We conclude that the helium flow removes water molecules adsorbed on the surface of the samples, resulting in differences in surface potential between adjacent regions. The degree of water removal is different for surfaces with different terminations. The results highlight the importance of taking into account the atmospheric environment when carrying out KFM analysis. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The kinetic resolution of (+/-)-mandelonitrile was carried out using lipase from Candida antarctica under conventional condition (orbital shaker) and microwave irradiation in toluene, producing the (S)-mandelonitrile acetate with high selectivity (up to >98% ee, enantiomeric excess). The unreacted (R)-mandelonitrile under microwave irradiation and conventional condition was partially converted into benzaldehyde by spontaneous chemical equilibrium. The (S)-mandelonitrile acetate under microwave irradiation was produced with 92% ee and 35% yield for 8 h of reaction. Conventional transesterification of (+/-)-mandelonitrile in an orbital shaker produced unreacted (R) -mandelonitrile (51% ee) and (S)-mandelonitrile acetate (98% ee) in accordance with Kazlauskas rule for 184 h of reaction.

We review symplectic nontwist maps that we have introduced to describe Lagrangian transport properties in magnetically confined plasmas in tokamaks. These nontwist maps are suitable to describe the formation and destruction of transport barriers in the shearless region (i.e., near the curve where the twist condition does not hold). The maps can be used to investigate two kinds of problems in plasmas with non-monotonic field profiles: the first is the chaotic magnetic field line transport in plasmas with external resonant perturbations. The second problem is the chaotic particle drift motion caused by electrostatic drift waves. The presented analytical maps, derived from plasma models with equilibrium field profiles and control parameters that are commonly measured in plasma discharges, can be used to investigate long-term transport properties. Gas-phase reactions of model carbosulfonium ions (CH3-S+?=?CH2; CH3CH2-S+?=?CH2 and Ph-S+?=?CH2) and an O-analogue carboxonium ion (CH3-O+?=?CH2) with acyclic (isoprene, 1,3-butadiene, methyl vinyl ketone) and cyclic (1,3-cyclohexadiene, thiophene, furan) conjugated dienes were systematically investigated by pentaquadrupole mass spectrometry. As corroborated by B3LYP/6-311?G(d,p) calculations, the carbosulfonium ions first react at large extents with the dienes forming adducts via simple addition. The nascent adducts, depending on their stability and internal energy, react further via two competitive channels: (1) in reactions with acyclic dienes via cyclization that yields formally [4?+?2+] cycloadducts, or (2) in reactions with the cyclic dienes via dissociation by HSR loss that yields methylenation (net CH+ transfer) products. In great contrast to its S-analogues, CH3-O+?=?CH2 (as well as C2H5-O+?=?CH2 and Ph-O+?=?CH2 in reactions with isoprene) forms little or no adduct and proton transfer is the dominant reaction channel. Isomerization to more acidic protonated aldehydes in the course of reaction seems to be the most plausible cause of the contrasting reactivity of carboxonium ions. The CH2?=?CH-O+?=?CH2 ion forms an abundant [4?+?2+] cycloadduct with isoprene, but similar to the behavior of such alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxonium ions in solution, seems to occur across the C?=?C bond.
