Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. The research work presented here is based on an empirical study of the process of synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices. As a background to the work, the paper explores concepts of what mechanical device, state, single state and multiple state are, and in the context of the above observational studies, attempts to identify the outstanding issues for supporting multiple state synthesis of mechanical devices.

The term Structural Health Monitoring has gained wide acceptance in the recent pastas a means to monitor a structure and provide an early warning of an unsafe conditionusing real-time data. Utilization of structurally integrated, distributed sensors tomonitor the health of a structure through accurate interpretation of sensor signals andreal-time data processing can greatly reduce the inspection burden. The rapidimprovement of the Fiber Bragg Grating sensor technology for strain, vibration andacoustic emission measurements in recent times make them a feasible alternatives tothe traditional strain gauges transducers and conventional Piezoelectric sensors usedfor Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM).Optical fiber-based sensors offers advantages over conventional strain gauges, PVDFfilm and PZT devices in terms of size, ease of embedment, immunity fromelectromagnetic interference(EMI) and potential for multiplexing a number ofsensors. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of Fiber BraggGrating sensor and compare its utility with the conventional strain gauges and PVDFfilm sensors. For this purpose experiments are being carried out in the laboratory on acomposite wing of a mini air vehicle (MAV). In this paper, the results obtained fromthese preliminary experiments are discussed.

The present work is an attempt to study crack initiation in nuclear grade, 9Cr-1Mo ferritic steel using AE as an online NDE tool. Laboratory experiments were conducted on 5 heat treated Compact Tension (CT) specimens made out of nuclear grade 9Cr-1Mo ferritic steel by subjecting them to cyclic tensile load. The CT Specimens were of 12.5 mm thickness. The Acoustic emission test system was setup to acquire the data continuously during the test by mounting AE sensor on one of the surfaces of the specimen. This was done to characterize AE data pertaining to crack initiation and then discriminate the samples in terms of their heat treatment processes based on AE data. The AE signatures at crack initiation could conclusively bring to fore the heat treatment distinction on a sample to sample basis in a qualitative sense. Thus, the results obtained through these investigations establish a step forward in utilizing AE technique as an on-line measurement tool for accurate detection and understanding of crack initiation and its profile in 9Cr-1Mo nuclear grade steel subjected to different processes of heat treatment.

A detailed study on the removal of pollutants (NOx, aldehydes and CO) from the exhaust of a stationary diesel engine is carried out using barrier discharge hybrid plasma techniques. The objective of the study is to make a comparative analysis. For this purpose, the exhaust treatment was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, the exhaust was treated with plasma process and plasma-adsorbent hybrid process. The effectiveness of the two processes with regard to NOx removal and by-product reduction was discussed. In the second stage, the exhaust was treated by plasma and plasma-catalyst hybrid process. The effectiveness of the two processes with regard to pollutants (NOx, CO) removal and by-product reduction was analyzed. Finally, a comprehensive comparison of different techniques has been made and feasible plasma based hybrid techniques for stationary and non-stationary engine exhaust treatments were proposed.

Closed loop current sensors used in power electronics applications are expected to have high bandwidth and minimal measurement transients. In this paper, a closed loop compensated Hall-effect current sensor is modeled. The model is used to tune the sensor's compensator. Analytical expression of step response is used to evaluate the performance of the PI compensator in the current sensor. This analysis is used to devise a procedure to design parameters of the PI compensator for fast dynamic response and for small dynamic error. A prototype current sensor is built in the laboratory. Simulations using the model are compared with experimental results to validate the model and to study the variation in performance with compensator parameters. The performance of the designed PI compensator for the sensor is compared with a commercial current sensor. The measured bandwidth of the designed current sensor is above 200 kHz, which is comparable to commercial standards. Implementation issues of PI compensator using operational amplifiers are also addressed.

Simultaneous measurements of thickness and temperature profile of the lubricant film at chip-tool interface during machining have been studied in this experimental programme. Conventional techniques such as thermography can only provide temperature measurement under controlled environment in a laboratory and without the addition of lubricant. The present study builds on the capabilities of luminescent sensors in addition to direct image based observations of the chip-tool interface. A suite of experiments conducted using different types of sensors are reported in this paper, especially noteworthy are concomitant measures of thickness and temperature of the lubricant. The problem of determination of system reliability of randomly vibrating structures arises in many application areas of engineering. We discuss in this paper approaches based on Monte Carlo simulations and laboratory testing to tackle problems of time variant system reliability estimation. The strategy we adopt is based on the application of Girsanov's transformation to the governing stochastic differential equations which enables estimation of probability of failure with significantly reduced number of samples than what is needed in a direct simulation study. Notably, we show that the ideas from Girsanov's transformation based Monte Carlo simulations can be extended to conduct laboratory testing to assess system reliability of engineering structures with reduced number of samples and hence with reduced testing times. Illustrative examples include computational studies on a 10 degree of freedom nonlinear system model and laboratory/computational investigations on road load response of an automotive system tested on a four post Lest rig. The results of the laboratory investigation performed on clay beds reinforced with natural (bamboo) and commercial (geosynthetics) reinforcement materials are reported in this paper. To use bamboo effectively, three-dimensional cells (similar to geocells) and two-dimensional grids (similar to geogrids) are formed using bamboo (termed bamboo cells and bamboo grids, respectively). The performance of clay beds reinforced with bamboo cells and bamboo grids is compared with that of clay beds reinforced with geocells and geogrids. The bearing capacity of the clay bed increased by six times when a combination of geocell and geogrid was used. The ultimate bearing capacity of the clay bed reinforced with bamboo cell and bamboo grid was found to be 1.3 times more than that of clay bed reinforced with geocell and geogrid. In addition, substantial reduction in the footing settlement and the surface deformation was observed. The tensile strength and surface roughness of bamboo were found to be nine times and three times, respectively, higher than geocell materials. The bamboo was treated chemically to increase its durability. Although the performance of bamboo was reduced by 15-20% after the chemical treatment, its performance was better than its commercial counterparts. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

This paper presents the instrumentation and control architecture for a laboratory based two-stage 4-bed silica gel + water adsorption system. The system consists of primarily two fluids: refrigerant (water vapour) and heat transfer fluid (water) flowing through various components. Heat input to the system is simulated using multiple heaters and ambient air is used as the heat sink. The laboratory setup incorporates a real time National Instruments (NI) controller to control several digital and analog valves, heaters, pumps and fans along with simultaneous data acquisition from various flow, pressure and temperature sensors. The paper also presents in detail the various automated and manual tasks required for successful operation of the system. Finally the system pressure and temperature dynamics are reported and its performance evaluated for various cycle times. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
