The accidental discovery of a cell with haploid number of diplochromosomes in squashes of colchicine-treated root tips led to a search for haploid anaphases in treated roots allowed to recover in water. No haploid anaphases were seen. Apart from the divisional stages of diploid and tetraploid nuclei, cells with two pro-, meta- and ana-phases were observed. The formation of distinct cell boundaries by each nucleus of an originally multinucleate cell indicates their potentialities in this direction.

Experiments were conducted in cement cisterns to find out the effect of adding different dosages of activated sludge on fish growth and plankton production. Three dosages of sludge, viz., 62·5 gm., 125 gm. and 250 gm. per 240 litres of water were used. Fingerlings ofCyprinus carpio, Cirrhina mrigala andCatla catla responded positively,C. mrigala showing maximum growth. The results indicate that the sludge has a direct influence on increasing growth of fish and production of plankton due to the release of nutrients into the water. The increase in plankton content stops after about 30 days. When greater quantities of sludge were added in the cisterns, fish mortality took place.

The behaviour of the nucleoli from mitotic prophase till the end of telophase is illustrated. Since at prophase, the SAT-threads appear embedded in the nucleolar matrix, their orientation in the mass and the rate of dissolution of the latter would determine whether this relationship would continue till meta- or ana-phase. The persistence of the nucleoli-SAT association often till anaphase indicates that the movement of such nucleoli on the spindle is governed by that of the SAT-chromosomes.

The structure of the mitotic chromosomes of Allium cepa has been elucidated by controlling the temperature and time of exposure of fresh roots to stain fixatives. The details seen in material stained in N HCl-orcein for 8 min. at 60° C. and squashed after varying intervals of storage at room temperature were essentially similar to pictures obtained with 1% aceto-orcein and 1% aceto-orcein-N HCl (10:1) under identical conditions of handling. The chromosomes appear quadri-partite at metaphase and bi-partite at anaphase. A rare instance of the precocious assumption of a quadri-partite condition by two anaphase chromosomes is illustrated. Caduceus coiling of chromonemata was seen in chromosome bridges also. Chromosomes have material easily dissociable from the chromonemata and their removal does not affect the structural integrity of the chromosome.

A quartic profile in terms of the normal distance from the wall has been taken and coefficients are evaluated by satisfying one more boundary condition on the wall than the usual one. By doing so, the limitations about the Reynolds number of the quartic profile adopted by Lew (1949) has been removed. The Kármán (1921) Momentum Integral Equation has been used to evaluate the various characteristics of the flow. A comparative study of Lew's quartic profile and exponential profile together with the quartic profile of the present paper has been undertaken and the graphs for the various characteristics of the flow for a number of Mach numbers and suction coefficients have been drawn. At the end, certain conclusions of general nature about the velocity profiles have been recorded.

1. Anhydrous aluminium chloride reacts with phosphorus oxychloride to give a complex with a composition AlCl3.2 POCl3 which can be prepared in the form of a free flowing powder. 2. The phosphorus oxychloride-aluminium chloride complex in nitrobenzene dissociates into AlCl3.POCl3 and POCl3 as indicated by the cryoscopic measurements. 3. The solution of the complex in nitrobenzene has a higher specific conductivity than the corresponding electrical conductivities of individual components. Similar higher electrical conductance is observed when the two components are mixed in nitrobenzene in different proportions. 4.When a solution of anhydrous aluminium chloride in nitrobenzene is titrated conductometrically against a solution of phosphorus oxychloride in nitrobenzene, a limiting value in the conductivity is reached at point corresponding to the molecular composition, the components in the ratio of 1:2 AlCl3: POCl3 in solution. 5. The absorption maxima of the complex in nitrobenzene solution differ from the absorption maximum of the individual components.

A detailed investigation of the hydrolysis of nickel in the lower concentration range has been made. The results have been analysed on the basis of 'Core + links' theory and on the assumption of the formation of one predominant complex. Evidence is obtained for the formation of Ni2 (OH)62- and its stability constant is calculated to be 1038.78

In this paper we have discussed the boundary layer on a plate with suction. The problem is solved near the leading edge as well as far downstream. A linear suction law is assumed near the leading edge for simplicity, whereas no restriction is placed on the suction law in the region downstream. An explict expression for boundary layer thickness in terms of suction speed and distance from leading edge is derived. It is found that the thickness of the boundary layer depends on the derivative of the suction speed. The skin friction also has been evaluated. Though near the leading edge a linear law of suction is assumed, the method used in the paper can be easily generalised for any other power law, for example, we may use a power series expansion for the function defining the suction velocity.
