The objective of this study was to investigate how seasonally fluctuating environmental conditions influence the diving performance of the highly aquatic, bimodally respiring turtle Rheodytes leukops in a natural setting. Over four consecutive seasons (Austral autumn 2000 to summer 2001), the diving behaviour of adult turtles was recorded via pressure-sensitive time-depth recorders within Marlborough Creek, central Queensland, Australia. Short surfacing intervals recorded for R. leukops in winter suggest that the species utilizes aquatic respiration as an overwintering strategy to prevent the development of a metabolic acidosis during the long inactive dives observed during the season. As water temperature increases and aquatic P-O 2 decreases, R. leukops switches from facultative to obligate air-breathing, presumably because of the increased metabolic cost associated with aquatic respiration under summer conditions. Increases in mean surfacing time from winter to spring and summer are attributed to seasonal changes in behaviour possibly associated with foraging rather than to the physiological state of the turtle, given that no difference in median surfacing time among seasons was observed.

The effect of heating and cooling on heart rate in the estuarine crocodile Crocodylus porosus was studied in response to different heat transfer mechanisms and heat loads. Three heating treatments were investigated. C. porosus were: (1) exposed to a radiant heat source under dry conditions; (2) heated via radiant energy while half-submerged in flowing water at 23degreesC and (3) heated via convective transfer by increasing water temperature from 23degreesC to 35degreesC. Cooling was achieved in all treatments by removing the heat source and with C. porosus half-submerged in flowing water at 23degreesC. In all treatments, the heart rate of C. porosus increased markedly in response to heating and decreased rapidly with the removal of the heat source. Heart rate during heating was significantly faster than during cooling at any given body temperature, i.e. there was a significant heart rate hysteresis. There were two identifiable responses to heating and cooling. During the initial stages of applying or removing the heat source, there was a dramatic increase or decrease in heart rate ('rapid response'), respectively, indicating a possible cardiac reflex. Pulmonary hypertension is associated with various alterations in 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) physiology. In this study in platelets from hypoxic pulmonary hypertensive rats (10% O-2; 1 week) and normoxic rats (room air), (i) initial rates of specific [H-3]5-HT uptake were measured and (ii) potentiation of collagen- and ADP-induced aggregation by 5-HT was quantified. The platelet count was almost halved in hypoxic rats. In uptake experiments, there was a decrease in 5-HT uptake in platelets from hypoxic compared with normoxic rats, due to a 36% reduction in the maximal initial rate of uptake. The aggregation experiments showed that 5-HT (1-100 muM) increased the magnitude of responses to collagen and the duration of responses to ADP, but there was no difference between hypoxic and normoxic rats. Abnormalities in platelet function may conceivably lead to increases in plasma 5-HT levels in hypoxic pulmonary hypertension, but are unlikely to aggravate pulmonary thromboembolism. Will chymase inhibitors be the next major development for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders?

Chymase is contained in the secretory granules of mast cells. In addition to the synthesis of angiotensin II, chymase is involved in transforming growth factor-beta activation and cleaves Type I procollagen to produce collagen. NK301 and BCEAB are orally-active inhibitors of chymase. NK301 was tested in a dog model of vascular intimal hyperplasia after balloon injury and shown to reduce the increased chymase activity in the injured arteries and prevent intimal thickening. In a hamster model of cardiac fibrosis associated with cardiomyopathy, BCEAB reduced the increased cardiac chymase activity in cardiomyopathy and reduced fibrosis. Chymase inhibitors may be an important development for the treatment of cardiovascular injury associated with mast cell degranulation.

The platelet inhibitory effects of the nitric oxide (NO) donor drug MAHMA NONOate ((Z-1-{N-methyl-N-[6-(N-methylammoniohexyl)amino] diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate) were examined in anaesthetised rats and compared with those of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO; an S-nitrosothiol). Bolus administration of the aggregating agent ADP dose-dependently reduced the number of circulating free platelets. Intravenous infusions of MAHMA NONOate (3-30 nmol/kg/min) dose-dependently inhibited the effect of 0.3 mumol/kg ADP. MAHMA NONOate was approximately 10-fold more potent than GSNO. MAHMA NONOate (0.3-10 nmol/kg/min) also reduced systemic artery pressure and was again 10-fold more potent than GSNO. Thus MAHMA NONOate has both platelet inhibitory and vasodepressor effects in vivo. The dose ranges for these two effects overlapped, although blood pressure was affected at slightly lower doses. The platelet inhibitory effects compared favourably with those of GSNO, even though NONOates generate free radical NO which, in theory, could have been scavenged by haemoglobin. Therefore platelet inhibition may be a useful therapeutic property of NONOates. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim was to determine whether uptake of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) by the 5-HT transporter (SERT) modulates contractile responses to 5-HT in rat pulmonary arteries and whether this modulation is altered by exposure of rats to chronic hypoxia (10% oxygen; 8 h/day; 5 days). The effects of the SERT inhibitor, citalopram (100 nM), on contractions to 5-HT were determined in isolated ring preparations of pulmonary artery (intralobar and main) and compared with data obtained in systemic arteries. In intralobar pulmonary arteries citalopram produced a potentiation (viz. an increase in potency, pEC(50)) of 5-HT. The potentiation was endothelium-dependent in preparations from normoxic rats but endothelium-independent in preparations from hypoxic rats. In main pulmonary artery endothelium-independent potentiation was seen in preparations from hypoxic rats but no potentiation occurred in preparations from normoxic rats. In systemic arteries, citalopram caused endothelium-independent potentiation in aorta but no potentiation in mesenteric arteries; there were no differences between hypoxic and normoxic rats. It is concluded that SERT can influence the concentration of 5-HT in the vicinity of the vasoconstrictor receptors in pulmonary arteries. The data suggest that in pulmonary arteries from hypoxic rats, unlike normoxic rats, the SERT responsible for this effect is not in the endothelium and, hence, is probably in the smooth muscle. The data are compatible with reports that, in the pulmonary circulation, hypoxia induces/up-regulates SERT, and hence increases 5-HT uptake, in vascular smooth muscle. The findings may have implications in relation to the suggested use of SERT inhibitors in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.

The effects of S-nitrosocaptopril (SNOcap), administered either intravenously or by oral gavage, on pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) were examined in anaesthetised normotensive rats and rats with hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (10% oxygen for 1 week). Mean PAP (MPAP) values in hypoxic and normoxic rats were (mmHg) 26 +/- 1.7 and 15 +/- 1.1, respectively. When given intravenously, 1 mg kg(-1) SNOcap reduced MPAP by 28 and 32% in hypoxic and normoxic rats, respectively. The effects of 2 mg kg(-1) were no greater than those of 1 mg kg(-1). Pulmonary vasoclepressor responses reached equilibrium in 1.7 +/- 0.18 min following intravenous administration. When given orally 30 min before the measurement of PAP, 30 mg kg(-1), but not 10 mg kg(-1), significantly reduced MPAP in hypoxic rats to 17 +/- 1.5 mmHg. These in-vivo data are consistent with previous in-vitro data showing that SNOcap has direct pulmonary vasorelaxant properties in both large and small pulmonary arteries and also show that SNOcap causes pulmonary vasodepression in the setting of pulmonary hypertension. Since SNOcap also inhibits pulmonary vascular angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) in pulmonary blood vessels (previous study), it would be an interesting drug with which to assess the benefits of direct pulmonary vasodilatation combined with ACE inhibition (which attentuates pulmonary vascular remodelling) in a long-term study in pulmonary hypertension.

We examined effects of body size and temperature on swimming performance in juvenile estuarine crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus, over the size range of 30-110 cm total body length. Swimming performance, expressed as maximum sustainable swimming speed, was measured in a temperature- and flow-controlled swimming flume. Absolute sustainable swimming speed increased with body length, but length-specific swimming performance decreased as body length increased. Sustained swimming speed increased with temperature between 15degreesC and 23degreesC, remained constant between 23degrees and 33degreesC, and decreased as temperature rose above 33degreesC. Q(10)-values of swimming speed were 2.60 (+/- 0.091 SE) between 18degreesC and 23degreesC, and there were no differences in Q(10) between crocodiles of different sizes. The broad plateau of thermal independence in swimming speed observed in C. porosus may be of adaptive significance by allowing dispersal of juvenile animals at suboptimal body temperatures.

The epidemic that is osteoporosis has led to an increasing interest in bone mineral, and the factors that influence the levels of bone mineral, in recent years. While it is unrealistic to try and turn back the clock, a return to an increased level of physical activity may be an important consideration in terms of skeletal health. Peak bone mass is largely determined by heredity, but lifestyle and dietary patterns also influence the level of bone mineral accrued during the growing years. In this review, we summarize the evidence that vigorous weight-bearing physical activity and adequate calcium intake represent the best possibility for enhancing the attainment of an optimal level of bone mineral, within genetic limits.

Este trabalho apresenta os conceitos de tradução de forma ampla, rompendo com a concepção de transformação de uma mensagem em um determinado código linguístico para outro, na qual busca-se apenas uma equivalência literal. Objetiva-se discutir a partir de teóricos em torno das teorias pós-coloniais e desconstrucionistas como Bhabha (2010), Hall (2006), Derrida (2006), Ottoni (2005), Orlandi (2008) e Niranjana (2011), a possibilidade de reposicionar a tradução, entendendo-a como ferramenta capaz de desconstruir paradigmas dominantes e, assim, recontar histórias, constituindo-se pontes plásticas. Assim, buscar-se-á pensar a tradução, na sua plasticidade, promovendo pontes que manifestam os cruzamentos existentes entre línguas, evidenciando o homem como cruzamento de diversos sujeitos. Como objeto empírico de análise, utilizaremos três verbetes presentes no site Wikipédia, nos quais traços da identidade brasileira estão envolvidos e investigar-se-á, a partir da leitura estereoscópica e da Teoria da Relevância proposta por Speber & Wilson (2001), os nuances nos processos tradutórios que podem contribuir para a forma como o Brasil é representado tanto pelas comunidades locais quanto estrangeiras, levando à constituição de estereótipos. A pesquisa aqui proposta se mostra relevante, uma vez que, objetiva estudar um corpus pouco explorado academicamente, mas em voga socialmente, já que o site Wikipédia se encontra entre os dez mais acessados da atualidade, com mais de 300 milhões de acessos únicos, além da importância de ser uma fonte de construção coletiva do pensamento, reinventando o conceito de enciclopédia. A pesquisa também se torna relevante sob a ótica dos estudos da tradução já que discorre sobre a importância do tradutor como ferramenta de formação de identidades sejam nacionais, culturais e sociais, além de propor o conceito híbrido de tradução-resenha, como uma tendência ao mundo multilingual contemporâneo

No artigo se realiza um exame crítico das relações entre a União Européia, América Latina e Caribe. O objetivo é explicitar a "associação estratégica" entre aqueles parceiros, proposta no Rio de Janeiro em 1999 e reiterada pela Cúpula de Viena em 2006. O texto pretende mostrar ainda por que estas reuniões não conseguiram uma aproximação efetiva.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a influência de bordadura com água e diferentes profundidades do nível de água dentro do evaporatório dos minievaporímetros UFV-1 e UFV-2 sobre a evaporação. Para analisar o efeito da bordadura e das profundidades dos níveis de água iguais a 30, 45, 60 e 75 mm da borda nos minievaporímetros, o experimento foi montado em esquema fatorial 4 x 2 (quatro níveis de água e dois tipos de minievaporímetros), no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com três repetições. De acordo com os resultados, a bordadura com água reduziu a evaporação no minievaporímetro UFV-2 em 1,10 mm d-1, em média, nas diferentes profundidades dos níveis de água estudados, comparativamente ao minievaporímetro UFV-1. À medida que se aumentou a profundidade do nível de água no evaporatório dos dois tipos de minievaporímetros, a evaporação diminuiu e se aproximou do valor obtido no tanque Classe A. O aumento na profundidade dos níveis de água nos minievaporímetros UFV-1 e UFV-2 de 30 para 75 mm reduziu a evaporação de 5,45 para 4,9 mm d-1 e de 4,29 para 3,81 mm d-1, respectivamente.
