This paper suggests the use of simple transformations like ÿ=kx, kx2 for second-order nonlinear differential equations to effect rapid plotting of the phase-plane trajectories. The method is particularly helpful in determining quickly the trajectory slopes along simple curves in any desired region of the phase plane. New planes such as the tÿ-x, tÿ2-x are considered for the study of some groups of nonlinear time-varying systems. Suggestions for solving certain higher-order nonlinear systems are also made.

In this Letter, we examine magnetization in double- and zero-quantum reservoirs of an ensemble of spin-1/2 nuclei and describe their role in determining the sensitivity of a class of separated local field NMR experiments based on Hartmann-Hahn cross-polarization. We observe that for the liquid crystal system studied, a large dilute spin-polarization, obtained initially by the use of adiabatic cross-polarization, can enhance the sensitivity of the above experiment. The signal enhancement factors, however, are found to vary and depend on the local dynamics. The experimental results have been utilized to obtain the local order-parameters of the system. The repeated or closely spaced eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of a matrix are usually very sensitive to a perturbation of the matrix, which makes capturing the behavior of these eigenpairs very difficult. Similar difficulty is encountered in solving the random eigenvalue problem when a matrix with random elements has a set of clustered eigenvalues in its mean. In addition, the methods to solve the random eigenvalue problem often differ in characterizing the problem, which leads to different interpretations of the solution. Thus, the solutions obtained from different methods become mathematically incomparable. These two issues, the difficulty of solving and the non-unique characterization, are addressed here. A different approach is used where instead of tracking a few individual eigenpairs, the corresponding invariant subspace is tracked. The spectral stochastic finite element method is used for analysis, where the polynomial chaos expansion is used to represent the random eigenvalues and eigenvectors. However, the main concept of tracking the invariant subspace remains mostly independent of any such representation. The approach is successfully implemented in response prediction of a system with repeated natural frequencies. It is found that tracking only an invariant subspace could be sufficient to build a modal-based reduced-order model of the system. Copyright (C) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Combustion instability events in lean premixed combustion systems can cause spatio-temporal variations in unburnt mixture fuel/air ratio. This provides a driving mechanism for heat-release oscillations when they interact with the flame. Several Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) approaches to predict the characteristics of these oscillations have been developed in the past. The present paper compares results for flame describing function characteristics determined from a ROM approach based on the level-set method, with corresponding results from detailed, fully compressible reacting flow computations for the same two dimensional slot flame configuration. The comparison between these results is seen to be sensitive to small geometric differences in the shape of the nominally steady flame used in the two computations. When the results are corrected to account for these differences, describing function magnitudes are well predicted for frequencies lesser than and greater than a lower and upper cutoff respectively due to amplification of flame surface wrinkling by the convective Darrieus-Landau (DL) instability. However, good agreement in describing function phase predictions is seen as the ROM captures the transit time of wrinkles through the flame correctly. Also, good agreement is seen for both magnitude and phase of the flame response, for large forcing amplitudes, at frequencies where the DL instability has a minimal influence. Thus, the present ROM can predict flame response as long as the DL instability, caused by gas expansion at the flame front, does not significantly alter flame front perturbation amplitudes as they traverse the flame. This paper proposes an algorithm for joint data detection and tracking of the dominant singular mode of a time varying channel at the transmitter and receiver of a time division duplex multiple input multiple output beamforming system. The method proposed is a modified expectation maximization algorithm which utilizes an initial estimate to track the dominant modes of the channel at the transmitter and the receiver blindly; and simultaneously detects the un known data. Furthermore, the estimates are constrained to be within a confidence interval of the previous estimate in order to improve the tracking performance and mitigate the effect of error propagation. Monte-Carlo simulation results of the symbol error rate and the mean square inner product between the estimated and the true singular vector are plotted to show the performance benefits offered by the proposed method compared to existing techniques.

We construct a hydrodynamic theory of noisy, apolar active smectics in bulk suspension or on a substrate. Unlike purely orientationally ordered active fluids, active apolar smectics can be dynamically stable in Stokesian bulk suspensions. Smectic order in these systems is quasilong ranged in dimension d = 2 and long ranged in d = 3. We predict reentrant Kosterlitz-Thouless melting to an active nematic in our simplest model in d = 2, a nonzero second-sound speed parallel to the layers in bulk suspensions, and that there are no giant number fluctuations in either case. We also briefly discuss possible instabilities in these systems. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.110.118102

Melting and freezing transitions in two dimensional (2D) systems are known to show highly unusual characteristics. Most of the earlier studies considered atomic systems: the melting of 2D molecular solids is still largely unexplored. In order to understand the role of anisotropy as well as multiple energy and length scales present in molecular systems, here we report computer simulation studies of melting of 2D molecular systems. We computed a limited portion of the solid-liquid phase diagram. We find that the interplay between the strength of isotropic and anisotropic interactions can give rise to rich phase diagram consisting of isotropic liquid and two crystalline phases-honeycomb and oblique. The nature of the transition depends on the relative strength of the anisotropic interaction and a strongly first order melting turns into a weakly first order transition on increasing the strength of the isotropic interaction. This crossover can be attributed to an increase in stiffness of the solid phase free energy minimum on increasing the strength of the anisotropic interaction. The defects involved in melting of molecular systems are quite different from those known for the atomic systems.

Interdiffusion studies become increasingly difficult to perform with the increasing number of elements in a system. It is rather easy to calculate the interdiffusion coefficients for all the compositions in the interdiffusion zone in a binary system. The intrinsic diffusion coefficients can be calculated for the composition of Kirkendall marker plane in a binary system. In a ternary system, however, the interdiffusion coefficients can only be calculated for the composition where composition profiles from two different diffusion couples intersect. Intrinsic diffusion coefficients are possible to calculate when the Kirkendall markers are also present at that composition, which is a condition that is generally difficult to satisfy. In a quaternary system, the composition profiles for three different diffusion couples must intersect at one particular composition to calculate the diffusion parameters, which is a condition that is almost impossible to satisfy. To avoid these complications in a multicomponent system, the average interdiffusion coefficients are calculated. I propose a method of calculating the intrinsic diffusion coefficients and the variation in the interdiffusion coefficients for multicomponent systems. This method can be used for a single diffusion couple in a multicomponent pseudobinary system. The compositions of the end members of a diffusion couple should be selected such that only two elements diffuse into the interdiffusion zone. A few hypothetical diffusion couples are considered in order to validate and explain our method. Various sources of error in the calculations are also discussed.

In this paper, the authors study the structure of a novel binaural sound with a certain phase and amplitude modulation and the response to this excitation when it is applied to natural rewarding circuit of human brain through auditory neural pathways. This novel excitation, also referred to as gyrosonic excitation in this work, has been found to have interesting effects such as stabilization effects on the left and right hemispheric brain signaling as captured by Galvanic Skin Resistance (GSR) measurements, control of cardiac rhythms (observed from ECG signals), mitigation of psychosomatic syndrome, and mitigation of migraine pain. Experimental data collected from human subjects are presented, and these data are examined to categorize the extent of systems disorder and reinforcement reward due to the gyrosonic stimulus. A multi-path reduced-order model has been developed to analyze the GSR signals. The filtered results are indicative of complicated reinforcing reward patterns due to the gyrosonic stimulation when it is used as a control input for patients with psychosomatic and cardiac disorders.

Systems biology is revealing multiple layers of regulatory networks that manifest spatiotemporal variations. Since genes and environment also influence the emergent property of a cell, the biological output requires dynamic understanding of various molecular circuitries. The metabolic networks continually adapt and evolve to cope with the changing milieu of the system, which could also include infection by another organism. Such perturbations of the functional networks can result in disease phenotypes, for instance tuberculosis and cancer. In order to develop effective therapeutics, it is important to determine the disease progression profiles of complex disorders that can reveal dynamic aspects and to develop mutitarget systemic therapies that can help overcome pathway adaptations and redundancy.

Similar quantum phase diagrams and transitions are found for three classes of one-dimensional models with equally spaced sites, singlet ground states (GS), inversion symmetry at sites and a bond order wave (BOW) phase in some sectors. The models are frustrated spin-1/2 chains with variable range exchange, half-filled Hubbard models with spin-independent interactions and modified Hubbard models with site energies for describing organic charge transfer salts. In some range of parameters, the models have a first order quantum transition at which the GS expectation value of the sublattice spin < S-A(2)> of odd or even-numbered sites is discontinuous. There is an intermediate BOW phase for other model parameters that lead to two continuous quantum transitions with continuous < S-A(2)>. Exact diagonalization of finite systems and symmetry arguments provide a unified picture of familiar 1D models that have appeared separately in widely different contexts.

Voltage source inverter (VSI) fed six-phase induction motor drives have high 6n +/- 1; n = odd order harmonic currents, due to absence of back emf for these currents. To suppress these harmonic currents, either bulky inductive harmonic filters or complex pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques have to be used. This paper proposes a simple harmonic elimination scheme using capacitor fed inverters, for an asymmetrical six-phase induction motor VSI fed drive. Two three phase inverters fed from a single capacitor is used on the open-end side of the motor, to suppress 6n +/- 1; n = odd order harmonics. A PWM scheme that can suppress the harmonics, as well as balance the capacitor voltage is also proposed. The capacitor fed inverters are switched so that the fundamental voltage is not affected. The proposed scheme is verified using MATLAB Simulink simulation at different speeds. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated by comparing the results with those obtained by disabling the capacitor fed inverters. Experimental results are also provided to validate the functionality of the proposed controller.

Lattice reduction (LR) aided detection algorithms are known to achieve the same diversity order as that of maximum-likelihood (ML) detection at low complexity. However, they suffer SNR loss compared to ML performance. The SNR loss is mainly due to imperfect orthogonalization and imperfect nearest neighbor quantization. In this paper, we propose an improved LR-aided (ILR) detection algorithm, where we specifically target to reduce the effects of both imperfect orthogonalization and imperfect nearest neighbor quantization. The proposed ILR detection algorithm is shown to achieve near-ML performance in large-MIMO systems and outperform other LR-aided detection algorithms in the literature. Specifically, the SNR loss incurred by the proposed ILR algorithm compared to ML performance is just 0.1 dB for 4-QAM and < 0.5 dB for 16-QAM in 16 x 16 V-BLAST MIMO system. This performance is superior compared to those of other LR-aided detection algorithms, whose SNR losses are in the 2 dB to 9 dB range.

The development of a viable adsorbed natural gas onboard fuel system involves synthesizing materials that meet specific storage target requirements. We assess the impact on natural gas storage due to intermediate processes involved in taking a laboratory powder sample to an onboard packed or adsorbent bed module. We illustrate that reporting the V/V (volume of gas/volume of container) capacities based on powder adsorption data without accounting for losses due to pelletization and bed porosity, grossly overestimates the working storage capacity for a given material. Using data typically found for adsorbent materials that are carbon and MOF based materials, we show that in order to meet the Department of Energy targets of 180 V/V (equivalent STP) loading at 3.5 MPa and 298 K at the onboard packed bed level, the volumetric capacity of the pelletized sample should be at least 245 V/V and the corresponding gravimetric loading varies from 0.175 to 0.38 kg/kg for pellet densities ranging from 461.5 to 1,000 . With recent revision of the DOE target to 263 V/V at the onboard packed bed level, the volumetric loadings for the pelletized sample should be about 373 V/V.
