Enzyme detergents used in the food industry contain proteinase as the major enzyme but amylase may be present, either by design or inadvertently. Three commercial enzyme detergents and 3 enzyme preparations used in detergents were assayed for alpha-amylase activity by the Ceralpha method using the Megazyme kits. The amylase activities of the detergents varied from 3.2x 10(-6) to 32x 10(-6) mumoles ml(-1) h(-1) while the enzyme preparations had much higher activities ranging from 0.05 to 8.06 mumoles ml(-1) h(-1). When added aseptically to a simulated dairy dessert (2% starch solution) and stored for 42 days, the enzyme detergents caused an increase in viscosity; enzyme preparations at low concentrations caused an initial increase in viscosity followed by a decrease; and enzyme preparations at high concentrations caused an immediate decrease in viscosity. The increase in viscosity corresponded to formation of a distinct network of starch granules while the decrease in viscosity was characterised by a marked decrease in size of the granules and little or no network of granules. Decreases in viscosity corresponded to increases in reducing sugars but samples which increased in viscosity showed no measurable reducing sugars. The amylase activity in all sources was destroyed by heating at 75degreesC for 15 min at pH 1.8.

Controversies In its present condition, rural Australia is characterised by a discourse of decline that sees country towns and regions as places of demoralisation and despair. From a Foucauldian governmentality perspective, those who live in these spaces are not so much 'powerless' to the demands of urban-based governments and global capital, as rendered governable according to the socio-political ambitions of late capitalism. While important insights have been derived from such analyses, it is argued in this paper that excessive attention is often paid to the power of the state with little concern for the various ways in which local people engage with, and transform the strategies and effects of state power. Rather than utilising the concept of resistance to make sense of these interactions, a sociology of translation is adopted from the Actor Network Theory literature. Applied to two case examples, it shows how governmental policies and programmes are frequently the outcome of the interactions and negotiations that take place between all those enrolled in the actor-network.

The radiation chemistry of PCTFE at different temperatures has been studied. The polymer was irradiated under vacuum to absorbed doses of up to 1500 kGy. Three irradiation temperatures were chosen. These included ambient temperature, a temperature well above the T, and a temperature above the crystalline melting temperature. These were 298, 423 and 493 K, respectively. The formation of new structures was identified by solid-state FTIR and F-19 NMR. No branching was observed below the melting temperature, but branches were observed above the melting temperature. G-values for chain-end formation were 1.5 and 2.4 at room temperature and 423 K, respectively and the G-value for the formation of double bonds was found to be < 0.1. For the irradiations at 493 K, the G-values for the formation of chain ends, double bonds and branching points were 3.6, 0.2 and 0.5, respectively. The presence of long-chain branches within the polymer structure could not be proven for radiolysis at 493 K, but scission predominates and network formation does not occur upon irradiation. DSC studies of the polymers irradiated at ambient temperature were consistent with chain scission leading to an increase in the percentage crystallinity, as observed for other fluoropolymers. The impact of basal ganglia dysfunction on semantic processing was investigated by comparing the performance of individuals with nonthalamic subcortical (NS) vascular lesions, Parkinson's disease (PD), cortical lesions, and matched controls on a semantic priming task. Unequibiased lexical ambiguity primes were used in auditory prime-target pairs comprising 4 critical conditions; dominant related (e.g., bank-money), subordinate related (e.g., bank-river), dominant unrelated (e.g.,foot-money) and subordinate unrelated (e.g., bat-river). Participants made speeded lexical decisions (word/nonword) on targets using a go-no-go response. When a short prime-target interstimulus interval (ISI) of 200 ins was employed, all groups demonstrated priming for dominant and subordinate conditions, indicating nonselective meaning facilitation and intact automatic lexical processing. Differences emerged at the long ISI (1250 ms), where control and cortical lesion participants evidenced selective facilitation of the dominant meaning, whereas NS and PD groups demonstrated a protracted period of nonselective meaning facilitation. This finding suggests a circumscribed deficit in the selective attentional engagement of the semantic network on the basis of meaning frequency, possibly implicating a disturbance of frontal-subcortical systems influencing inhibitory semantic mechanisms.

This article recommends a new way to improve Refugee Status Determination (RSD) procedures by proposing a network society communicative model based on active involvement and dialogue among all implementing partners. This model, named after proposals from Castells, Habermas, Apel, Chimni, and Betts, would be mediated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), whose role would be modeled after that of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) practice.

This paper analyzes People's Republic of China (PRC) economic and political ascendance in the 21st century focusing on the evolution of the sui generis economic development model and its significances of the evolution of relationship between China and the developing countries in the peripheral "Global South." The objective of this article is to analyze the relationship between China and the Global South (Africa and South America) in the 21st century, characterized as a new Center-periphery global network power based on trade and investment that we call as "Asian Consensus."

This work demonstrates that the theoretical framework of complex networks typically used to study systems such as social networks or the World Wide Web can be also applied to material science, allowing deeper understanding of fundamental physical relationships. In particular, through the application of the network theory to carbon nanotubes or vapour-grown carbon nanofiber composites, by mapping fillers to vertices and edges to the gap between fillers, the percolation threshold has been predicted and a formula that relates the composite conductance to the network disorder has been obtained. The theoretical arguments are validated by experimental results from the literature.

Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) make software easy to use by providing the user with visual controls. Therefore, correctness of GUI's code is essential to the correct execution of the overall software. Models can help in the evaluation of interactive applications by allowing designers to concentrate on its more important aspects. This paper presents a generic model for language-independent reverse engineering of graphical user interface based applications, and we explore the integration of model-based testing techniques in our approach, thus allowing us to perform fault detection. A prototype tool has been constructed, which is already capable of deriving and testing a user interface behavioral model of applications written in Java/Swing.

The interoperability of IP video equipment is a critical problem for surveillance systems and other video application developers. ONVIF is one of the two specifications addressing the standardization of networked devices interface, and it is based on SOAP. This paper addresses the development of an ONVIF library to develop clients of video cameras. This paper aims to cast some light on the dynamics of knowledge networks in developing countries by analyzing the scientific production of the largest university in the Northeast of Brazil and its influence on some of the remaining regional research institutions in the state of Bahia. Using a methodology test to be employed in a larger project, the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) (Federal University of Bahia), the Universidade do Estado da Bahia (Uneb) (State of Bahia University) and the Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz (Uesc)'s (Santa Cruz State University) scientific productions are discussed in one of their most traditionally expressive sectors in academic production - namely, the field of chemistry, using social network analysis of co-authorship networks to investigate the existence of small world phenomena and the importance of these phenomena in research performance in these three universities. The results already obtained through this research bring to light data of considerable interest concerning the scientific production in unconsolidated research universities. It shows the important participation of the UFBA network in the composition of the other two public universities research networks, indicating a possible occurrence of small world phenomena in the UFBA and Uesc networks, as well as the importance of individual researchers in consolidating research networks in peripheral universities. The article also hints that the methodology employed appears to be adequate insofar as scientific production may be used as a proxy for scientific knowledge.

In order to sustain their competitive advantage in the current increasingly globalized and turbulent context, more and more firms are competing globally in alliances and networks that oblige them to adopt new managerial paradigms and tools. However, their strategic analyses rarely take into account the strategic implications of these alliances and networks, considering their global relational characteristics, admittedly because of a lack of adequate tools to do so. This paper contributes to research that seeks to fill this gap by proposing the Global Strategic Network Analysis - SNA - framework. Its purpose is to help firms that compete globally in alliances and networks to carry out their strategic assessments and decision-making with a view to ensuring dynamic strategic fit from both a global and relational perspective.

As comunicações electrónicas são cada vez mais o meio de eleição para negócios entre entidades e para as relações entre os cidadãos e o Estado (e-government). Esta diversidade de transacções envolve, muitas vezes, informação sensível e com possível valor legal. Neste contexto, as assinaturas electrónicas são uma importante base de confiança, fornecendo garantias de integridade e autenticação entre os intervenientes. A produção de uma assinatura digital resulta não só no valor da assinatura propriamente dita, mas também num conjunto de informação adicional acerca da mesma, como o algoritmo de assinatura, o certificado de validação ou a hora e local de produção. Num cenário heterogéneo como o descrito anteriormente, torna-se necessária uma forma flexível e interoperável de descrever esse tipo de informação. A linguagem XML é uma forma adequada de representar uma assinatura neste contexto, não só pela sua natureza estruturada, mas principalmente por ser baseada em texto e ter suporte generalizado. A recomendação XML Signature Syntax and Processing (ou apenas XML Signature) foi o primeiro passo na representação de assinaturas em XML. Nela são definidas sintaxe e regras de processamento para criar, representar e validar assinaturas digitais. As assinaturas XML podem ser aplicadas a qualquer tipo de conteúdos digitais identificáveis por um URI, tanto no mesmo documento XML que a assinatura, como noutra qualquer localização. Além disso, a mesma assinatura XML pode englobar vários recursos, mesmo de tipos diferentes (texto livre, imagens, XML, etc.). À medida que as assinaturas electrónicas foram ganhando relevância tornou-se evidente que a especificação XML Signature não era suficiente, nomeadamente por não dar garantias de validade a longo prazo nem de não repudiação. Esta situação foi agravada pelo facto da especificação não cumprir os requisitos da directiva 1999/93/EC da União Europeia, onde é estabelecido um quadro legal para as assinaturas electrónicas a nível comunitário. No seguimento desta directiva da União Europeia foi desenvolvida a especificação XML Advanced Electronic Signatures que define formatos XML e regras de processamento para assinaturas electrónicas não repudiáveis e com validade verificável durante períodos de tempo extensos, em conformidade com a directiva. Esta especificação estende a recomendação XML Signature, definindo novos elementos que contêm informação adicional acerca da assinatura e dos recursos assinados (propriedades qualificadoras). A plataforma Java inclui, desde a versão 1.6, uma API de alto nível para serviços de assinaturas digitais em XML, de acordo com a recomendação XML Signature. Contudo, não existe suporte para assinaturas avançadas. Com este projecto pretende-se desenvolver uma biblioteca Java para a criação e validação de assinaturas XAdES, preenchendo assim a lacuna existente na plataforma. A biblioteca desenvolvida disponibiliza uma interface com alto nível de abstracção, não tendo o programador que lidar directamente com a estrutura XML da assinatura nem com os detalhes do conteúdo das propriedades qualificadoras. São definidos tipos que representam os principais conceitos da assinatura, nomeadamente as propriedades qualificadoras e os recursos assinados, sendo os aspectos estruturais resolvidos internamente. Neste trabalho, a informação que compõe uma assinatura XAdES é dividia em dois grupos: o primeiro é formado por características do signatário e da assinatura, tais como a chave e as propriedades qualificadoras da assinatura. O segundo grupo é composto pelos recursos assinados e as correspondentes propriedades qualificadoras. Quando um signatário produz várias assinaturas em determinado contexto, o primeiro grupo de características será semelhante entre elas. Definiu-se o conjunto invariante de características da assinatura e do signatário como perfil de assinatura. O conceito é estendido à verificação de assinaturas englobando, neste caso, a informação a usar nesse processo, como por exemplo os certificados raiz em que o verificador confia. Numa outra perspectiva, um perfil constitui uma configuração do serviço de assinatura correspondente. O desenho e implementação da biblioteca estão também baseados no conceito de fornecedor de serviços. Um fornecedor de serviços é uma entidade que disponibiliza determinada informação ou serviço necessários à produção e verificação de assinaturas, nomeadamente: selecção de chave/certificado de assinatura, validação de certificados, interacção com servidores de time-stamp e geração de XML. Em vez de depender directamente da informação em causa, um perfil — e, consequentemente, a operação correspondente — é configurado com fornecedores de serviços que são invocados quando necessário. Para cada tipo de fornecedor de serviços é definida um interface, podendo as correspondentes implementações ser configuradas de forma independente. A biblioteca inclui implementações de todos os fornecedores de serviços, sendo algumas delas usadas for omissão na produção e verificação de assinaturas. Uma vez que o foco do projecto é a especificação XAdES, o processamento e estrutura relativos ao formato básico são delegados internamente na biblioteca Apache XML Security, que disponibiliza uma implementação da recomendação XML Signature. Para validar o funcionamento da biblioteca, nomeadamente em termos de interoperabilidade, procede-se, entre outros, à verificação de um conjunto de assinaturas produzidas por Estados Membros da União Europeia, bem como por outra implementação da especificação XAdES.

Deuterium NMR was used to investigate the orientational order in a composite cellulosic formed by liquid crystalline acetoxypropylcellulose (A PC) and demented nematic 4'-penty1-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB-4 alpha d(2)) with the per centage of 85% A PC by weight Three forms of the composite including electro spun microfibers, thin film and bulk samples were analyzed The NMR results initially suggest two distinct scenarios, one whet e the 503-alpha d(2), is confined to small droplets with dimensions smaller than the magnetic coherence length and the other where the 503-alpha d(2) molecules arc aligned with the A PC network chains Polarized optical microscopy (POW from thin film samples along with all the NMR results show the presence of 5CB-alpha d(2) droplets in the composite systems with a nematic wetting layer at the APC-5CB-alpha d(2) interface that experiences and order disorder transition driven by the polymer network N-I transition The characterization of the APC network I-N transition shows a pronounced subcritical behavior within a heterogeneity scenario.
