Mesozooplankton is collected by vertical tows within the Black sea water body mass layer in the NE Aegean, using a WP-2 200 µm net equipped with a large non-filtering cod-end (10 l). Macrozooplankton organisms are removed using a 2000 µm net. A few unsorted animals (approximately 100) are placed inside several glass beaker of 250 ml filled with GF/F or 0.2 µm Nucleopore filtered seawater and with a 100 µm net placed 1 cm above the beaker bottom. Beakers are then placed in an incubator at natural light and maintaining the in situ temperature. After 1 hour pellets are separated from animals and placed in separated flasks and preserved with formalin. Pellets are counted and measured using an inverted microscope. Animals are scanned and counted using an image analysis system. Carbon- Specific faecal pellet production is calculated from a) faecal pellet production, b) individual carbon: Animals are scanned and their body area is measured using an image analysis system. Body volume is then calculated as an ellipsoid using the major and minor axis of an ellipse of same area as the body. Individual carbon is calculated from a carbon- total body volume of organisms (relationship obtained for the Mediterranean Sea by Alcaraz et al. (2003) divided by the total number of individuals scanned and c) faecal pellet carbon: Faecal pellet length and width is measured using an inverted microscope. Faecal pellet volume is calculated from length and width assuming cylindrical shape. Conversion of faecal pellet volume to carbon is done using values obtained in the Mediterranean from: a) faecal pellet density 1,29 g cm**3 (or pg µm**3) from Komar et al. (1981); b) faecal pellet DW/WW=0,23 from Elder and Fowler (1977) and c) faecal pellet C%DW=25,5 Marty et al. (1994).

Se realizó un ensayo durante tres años consecutivos con el fin de monitorear la evolución del tamaño y del peso de los frutos de una plantación comercial de kiwi variedad Hayward ubicada en la provincia de Córdoba. El objetivo fue determinar la evolución del peso y del tamaño del fruto durante la etapa final de crecimiento. Se seleccionaron doce plantas representativas y se realizaron cosechas durante cuatro semanas en tres años sucesivos desde el 4/3 al 24/3, a partir de que los frutos alcanzaron 5° Brix. Las variables evaluadas fueron: peso del fruto, longitud del fruto, diámetro mayor y menor al momento de la cosecha y luego de seis días a temperatura ambiente. El peso del fruto se incrementó desde un valor mínimo de 83,71 g a 121,1 g. La pérdida de peso luego de seis días fue desde un mínimo de 3,11 g a un máximo de 6,01 g. La longitud pasó de 54,73 mm a 64,20 mm. El diámetro mayor pasó de 52,12 mm a 59,7 mm, presentando una disminución después de seis días de un mínimo de 0,27 mm a un máximo 7,12 mm. El diámetro menor pasó de 42 mm a 54,41 mm entre la primera y la cuarta cosecha. Todas las variables presentaron un incremento en la medida en que atrasaba la cosecha, lo que justifica una cosecha más tardía, en función del tamaño de los frutos.

Layered Fe-Mn crusts from the off-axis region of the first segment of the Central Indian Ridge north of the Rodrigues Triple Junction were studied geochemically and mineralogically. Vernadite (delta-MnO2) is the main mineral oxide phase. 230Thxs and Co concentrations suggest high growth rates of up to 29 mm/Myr and a maximum age of the basal crust layer of 1 Ma. Whereas most of the major and minor elements show concentrations which are typical of hydrogenetic formation, Co, Pb, Ni and Ti concentrations are strikingly lower. Concentrations and distribution of the strictly trivalent rare-earths and yttrium (REY) are typical of hydrogenetic ferromanganese oxide precipitates, but in marked contrast, the crusts are characterized by negative CeSN (shale normalized) anomalies and (Ce/Pr)SN ratios less than unity. Profiles through the crusts reveal only minor variations of the REY distribution and (Ce/Pr)SN ratios range from 0.45 to 0.68 (compared to ratios of up to 2 for typical hydrogenetic crusts from the Central Indian Basin). The apparent bulk partition coefficients between the crusts and seawater suggest that for the strictly trivalent REY the adsorption-desorption equilibrium has been reached. Positive Ce anomalies in the partition coefficient patterns reveal preferential uptake of Ce, but to a lesser extent than in normal hydrogenetic crusts. A new parameter (excess Ce, Cexs) to quantify the degree of decoupling of Ce from REY(III) is established on the basis of partition coefficients. Cexs/Cebulk ratios suggest that the CIR crusts formed by precipitation of Fe-Mn oxides from a hydrothermal plume and that in hydrothermal plumes and normal seawater the enrichment of Ce results from the same oxidative sorption process. The growth rates, calculated with 230Thxs data as well as with the Co formula, are inversely related to Cexs.

Las células presentadoras de antígenos profesionales como las células de Langerhans o las células dendríticas intersticiales del tejido conectivo, son las células capturadoras de antígenos más importantes del sistema inmune. En trabajos previos describimos variaciones numéricas y estructurales de las células dendríticas; con especial referencia a las células de Langerhans, en diversos epitelios del tracto digestivo. El propósito de este trabajo fue estudiar la distribución, en forma comparativa, de las células dendríticas en glándulas salivales mayores y menores de la mucosa oral. Material y métodos: para esta investigación se utilizaron muestras de glándulas salivales mayores y menores tomadas de ratas Wistar. Las muestras fueron procesadas utilizando técnicas de microscopía óptica convencional, electrónica e inmunohistoquímica. Los resultados muestran numerosas células dendríticas en los conductos salivares excretores (con epitelio estratificado) así como en el parénquima glandular. Aunque no detectamos diferencias estadísticas significativas entre los dos componentes glandulares analizados, nuestros hallazgos sugieren que, debido a su localización, estas células cumplen un rol fundamental en las defensas inmunes de la mucosa oral.

Leg 83 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project has deepened Hole 504B to over 1 km into basement, 1350 m below the seafloor (BSF). The hole previously extended through 274.5 m of sediment and 561.5 m of pillow basalts altered at low temperature (< 100°C), to 836 m BSF. Leg 83 drilling penetrated an additional 10 m of pillows, a 209-m transition zone, and 295 m into a sheeted dike complex. Leg 83 basalts (836-1350 m BSF) generally contain superimposed greenschist and zeolite-facies mineral parageneses. Alteration of pillows and dikes from 836 to 898 m BSF occurred under reducing conditions at low water/rock ratios, and at temperatures probably greater than 100°C. Evolution of fluid composition resulted in the formation of (1) clay minerals, followed by (2) zeolites, anhydrite, and calcite. Alteration of basalts in the transition zone and dike sections (898-1350 m BSF) occurred in three basic stages, defined by the opening of fractures and the formation of characteristic secondary minerals. (1) Chlorite, actinolite, pyrite, albite, sphene, and minor quartz formed in veins and host basalts from partially reacted seawater (Mg-bearing, locally metal-and Si-enriched) at temperatures of at least 200-250°C. (2) Quartz, epidote, and sulfides formed in veins at temperatures of up to 380°C, from more evolved (Mg-depleted, metal-, Si-, and 18O-enriched) fluids. (3) The last stage is characterized by zeolite formation: (a) analcite and stilbite formed locally, possibly at temperatures less than 200°C followed by (b) formation of laumontite, heulàndite, scolecite, calcite, and prehnite from solutions depleted in Mg and enriched in Ca and 18O, at temperatures of up to 250°C. The presence of small amounts of anhydrite locally may be due to ingress of relatively unaltered seawater into the system during Stage 3. Alteration was controlled by the permeability of the crust and is characterized by generally incomplete recrystallization and replacement reactions among secondary minerals. Secondary mineralogy in the host basalts is strongly controlled by primary mineralogy. The alteration of Leg 83 basalts can be interpreted in terms of an evolving hydrothermal system, with (a) changes in solution composition because of reaction of seawater fluids with basalts at high temperatures; (b) variations in permeability caused by several stages of sealing and reopening of cracks; and (c) a general cooling of the system, caused either by the cooling of a magma chamber beneath the spreading center and/or the movement of the crust away from the heat source. The relationship of the high-temperature alteration in the transition zone and dike sections to the low-temperature alteration in the overlying pillow section remains uncertain.

Major and minor (Mn, Sr, Ba, V, Cr, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu, Zr, Y, Sc) elements and mineralogic compositions were determined on bulk sediments collected during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 135. Three classes of sediment samples from holes drilled in the Lau Basin are discriminated by mineralogy and major element data. Samples labeled Class 1 are significantly enriched in biogenic calcite and occur predominantly in the northern part of the basin (Sites 834-835), whereas those of Class 3 are mostly enriched in volcanogenic material and are predominant in the central part of the basin (Sites 836-839). The minor element composition records the effects of the hydrothermal activity on the sediments. In the northern area of the basin (Sites 834-835), sedimentation is characterized by higher accumulation rates of the carbonate and hydrothermal fractions. These sediments are probably reworked predominantly, transported in the water column, and then settled locally. Thus, ponded sediments are probably responsible to this high accumulation rates. Diagenetic processes altered the volcanic material to a grade corresponding to the stability of phillipsite. In the central area of the basin (Sites 836-839), sedimentation is characterized by the action of bottom currents preferentially reworking the carbonate and hydrothermal fractions. Volcanogenic accumulation rates are greater at these sites than in the northern Lau Basin. Alteration of volcanic material is more important deeper in the holes and records authigenesis of clay rich in Fe-Mg, most likely smectite. Locally, clay minerals have apparently incorporated Cr and other ore-forming elements.

Sediment cores recovered from three holes drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 136 include volcaniclastics probably derived from the Hawaiian islands. The volcaniclastics shallower than 10 meters below seafloor are fresh and are composed of basaltic glass (sideromelane), basaltic fragments (mainly tachylite), plagioclase, olivine, pyroxene, and opaque minerals. Most of these glasses are probably products of hydrovolcanism. Visibly, some of these volcaniclastics are recognized as bedded ash layers having thicknesses that range from 5 to 10 cm. However, many volcaniclastics are disrupted by bioturbation to some degree, and are sometimes totally mixed with ambient brown clays. No visible correlative ash layer among these holes was found. It seems that many ash layers thinner than the bedded layers were disrupted by bioturbation because of the low sedimentation rate of volcaniclastics. The volcaniclastics were probably transported one of two ways: through air fall and pelagic settling or through turbidity-current transport. Other archipelagic apron volcaniclastic sediments of volcanic seamounts suggest that turbidite transport is the favored explanation of origin.

This paper presents materials on the chemical and mineralogical composition of Fe-Mn mineralization in island arcs (Kuril, Nampo, Mariana, New Britain, New Hebrides, and Kermadec) in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. The mineralization was proved to be of hydrothermal and/or hydrogenic genesis. The former is produced by hydrothermal Fe and Mn oxi-hydroxides that cement volcanic-terrigenous material in sediments. Some Fe oxyhydroxides can be derived via the halmyrolysis of volcaniclastic material. Crusts of this stage are characterized by fairly low concentrations of trace and rare elements, and their REE composition is inherited from the volcanic-terrigenous material. The minerals of the Mn oxyhydroxides are todorokite and "Ca-birnessite". The Mn/Fe ratio increases away from the discharge sites of the hydrothermal solutions. The hydrogenic Fe-Mn crusts are characterized by high concentrations of trace and minor elements of both the Mn group (Co, Ni, Tl, and Mo) and the Fe group (REE, Y, and Th). The hydrogenic crusts consist of Fe-vernadite and Mn-feroxyhyte. Some of the hydrothermal crusts originally had a hydrothermal genesis. The first data were obtained on crust B30-72-10 from the Macauley Seamount in the Kermadec island arc, which contained anomalously high concentrations of Co (2587 ppm) and other Mn-related trace elements in the absence of hydrogeneous Fe oxyhydroxides.

The Snake Pit active hydrothermal field was discovered at 23°22'N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge during ODP Leg 106. Among the ten holes drilled in the mound at the foot of an active chimney, only three (649B, 649F, and 649G) had substantial recovery, and produced cores of unconsolidated hydrothermal deposit made up of porous sulfide fragments with minor talc pellets and biological debris, and a few pieces of brassy massive sulfides. Eight representative samples from the 6.5-m-long core from Hole 649B were analyzed for bulk chemistry, both by XRF (major elements) and NAA (trace elements). Major elements average compositions show high Fe (36 wt%), S (37 wt%), and Cu (12 wt%) contents, and minor Zn (6.7 wt%), reflecting a mostly high-temperature deposit. Trace elements are characterized by a high Au content (600 ppb) which could express the maturity of the mound. Mineralogical assemblages show evidence of sequential precipitation, and absence of equilibrium. Major sulfide phases are pyrrhotite, pyrite, Fe, Cu sulfides, marcasite, and sphalerite. Three types of samples are distinguished on the basis of textures and mineral assemblages: type 1, rich in pyrrhotite, with approximately equivalent amounts of Cu, Fe sulfides, and sphalerite and minor pyrite; type 2, rich in Cu, Fe sulfides, which are cubic cubanite with exsolutions and rims of chalcopyrite; and type 3, essentially made up of sphalerite. Type 2 samples likely represent fragments of the inner chimney wall. The presence of talc intergrown with cubic cubanite/chalcopyrite in one big piece from Hole 649G is probably related to mixing of the hydrothermal fluid with seawater.

The SES_GR2-Mesozooplankton faecal pellet production rates dataset is based on samples taken during August and September 2008 in the Northern Libyan Sea, Southern Aegean Sea and the North-Eastern Aegean Sea. This paper reports the results of a preliminary palaeomagnetic investigation of the Admiralty Intrusives complex of northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. The samples were collected at Mt. Supernal and Inferno Peak, two pinions mainly formed of granodiorite and minor tonalite and emplaced at ab. 350 Ma at a high crustal level, as shown by amphibole geobarometric data and occurrence of miarolitic cavities. Microprobe and isothermal remanence analyses showed that magnetite. characterized by low coercivity and Curic point in the range 550-570 °C is the only primary ferromagnetic mineral. Stepwise thermaldemagnetization succeeded in isolatingamagnetization component. stable up to 530 °C. The virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs) of the two plutons are different. That of Inferno Peak is consistent with the Australian palaeopoles of late Devonian-early Carboniferous age, whereas the location of the Mt. Supernal VGP probably results from the tectonic activity which affected the Ross Sea region during the Cenozoic.

A geochemical analysis is conducted on hemipelagic sediments at ODP Leg 162, Site 907, North Atlantic. On the basis of major and minor element concentrations, the sequence is divided into five units. Geochemical data reveal that the sediments originated from two specific source areas, i.e., continental icerafted debris (IRD) and Icelandic basalt. In the upper part (lithological units I and II, 0 to 63.1 meters below sea floor (mbsf)), sediments were derived from continental IRD, whereas in the lower part, sediments (lithological units III, IV, and V, below 63.1 mbsf) comprise mixture of continental IRD and minor supply from the Icelandic basalt. The ratio of TiO2/Al2O3 to SiO2 content and the Th to Ti/Al molar ratio clearly provide a key to discriminate provenances. The change in source area is most likely related to the oceanographic and climatic evolution in the North Atlantic since the middle Miocene. Biogenic fossil-barren intervals (Units II and V) are considered as a consequence of dissolution caused by oceanic circulation. The timing of IRD initiation confers with that of geochemical analysis. Total organic carbon to total nitrogen (C/N) ratio shows a striking variation in the entire core. The C/N ratios exceed 10 below approximately 196 mbsf (lithological unit V) with a gradual downward increase. This suggests that terrigenous organic matters have been supplied from the neighboring continents. The total organic carbon to total sulfur (C/S) ratio also shows such possibility as well as diagenetic changes in Units IV and V. The carbonate-barren intervals presented in Units II and V, and intermittently in Units III and IV are interpreted as a consequence of dissolution effect related with climatic variation and deep-water circulation. Additional low surface productivity was considerable.
