A soluble-lead redox flow battery with corrugated-graphite sheet and reticulated-vitreous carbon as positive and negative current collectors is assembled and performance tested. In the cell, electrolyte comprising of 1 center dot 5 M lead (II) methanesulfonate and 0 center dot 9 M methanesulfonic acid with sodium salt of lignosulfonic acid as additive is circulated through the reaction chamber at a flow rate of 50 ml min (-aEuro parts per thousand 1). During the charge cycle, pure lead (Pb) and lead dioxide (PbO2) from the soluble lead (II) species are electrodeposited onto the surface of the negative and positive current collectors, respectively. Both the electrodeposited materials are characterized by XRD, XPS and SEM. Phase purity of synthesized lead (II) methanesulfonate is unequivocally established by single crystal X-ray diffraction followed by profile refinements using high resolution powder data. During the discharge cycle, electrodeposited Pb and PbO2 are dissolved back into the electrolyte. Since lead ions are produced during oxidation and reduction at the negative and positive plates, respectively there is no risk of crossover during discharge cycle, preventing the possibility of lowering the overall efficiency of the cell. As the cell employs a common electrolyte, the need of employing a membrane is averted. It has been possible to achieve a capacity value of 114 mAh g (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) at a load current-density of 20 mA cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 2) with the cell at a faradaic efficiency of 95%. The cell is tested for 200 cycles with little loss in its capacity and efficiency.

The main theme of this paper is to study the flammability suppression of hydrocarbons by blending with carbon dioxide, and to evaluate these mixtures as possible working fluids in organic Rankine cycle for medium temperature concentrated solar power applications. The analysis takes into account inevitable irreversibilities in the turbine, the pump, and heat exchangers. While the isopentane + CO2 mixture suffers from high irreversibility mainly in the regenerator owing to a large temperature glide, the propane + CO2 mixture performs more or less the same as pure propane albeit with high cycle pressures. In general, large temperature glides at condensing pressures extend the heat recovery into the two-phase dome, which is an advantage. However, at the same time, the shift of the pinch point towards the warm end of the regenerator is found to be a major cause of irreversibility. In fact, as the number of carbon atoms in alkanes decreases, their blend with CO2 moves the pinch point to the colder end of the regenerator. This results in lower entropy generation in the regenerator and improved cycle efficiency of propane + CO2 mixtures. With this mixture, real cycle efficiencies of 15-18% are achievable at a moderate source temperature of 573 K. Applicability for a wide range of source temperatures is found to be an added advantage of this mixture.

Sequential adsorption of CO and NO as well as equimolar NO + CO reaction with variation of temperature over Pd2+ ion-substituted CeO2 and Ce0.75Sn0.25O2 supports has been studied by DRIFTS technique. The results are compared with 2 at.% Pd/Al2O3 containing Pd-0. Both linear and bridging Pd-0-CO bands are observed over 2 at.% Pd/Al2O3. But, band positions are shifted to higher frequencies in Ce0.98Pd0.02O2-delta and Ce0.73Sn0.25Pd0.02O2-delta catalysts that could be associated with Pd delta+-CO species. In contrast, a Pd2+-CO band at 2160 cm(-1) is observed upon CO adsorption over Ce0.98Pd0.02O2-delta and Ce0.73Sn0.25Pd0.02O2-delta catalysts pre-adsorbed with NO and a Pd+-CO band at 2120 cm(-1) is slowly developed on Ce(0.73)Srl(0.25)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta) over time. An intense linear Pd-0-NO band at 1750 cm(-1) found upon NO exposure to CO pre-adsorbed 2 at.% Pd/Al2O3 indicates molecular adsorption of NO. On the other hand, a weak Pd2+-NO band at 1850 cm(-1) is noticed after NO exposure to Ce0.98Pd0.02O2-delta catalyst pre-adsorbed with CO indicating dissociative adsorption of NO which is crucial for NO reduction. Pd-0-NO band is initially formed over CO pre-adsorbed Ce0.73Sn0.25Pd0.02O2-delta which is red-shifted over time along with formation of Pd2+-NO band. Several intense bands related to nitrates and nitrites are observed after exposure of NO to fresh as well as CO pre-adsorbed Ce0.98Pd0.02O2-delta and Ce0.73Sn0.25Pd0.02O2-delta catalysts. Ramping the temperature in a DRIFTS cell upon NO and CO adsorption shows the formation of N2O and NCO surface species, and N2O-formation temperature is comparable with the reaction done in a reactor.

A highly regioselective alkenylation of indole at the C2-position has been achieved using the Ru(II) catalyst by employing a directing group strategy. This strategy offers rare selectivity for the alkenylation N-benzoylindole at the C-2 position in the presence of the more active C3- and C7-position of indole and the ortho-positions of the benzoyl protecting group. A simple deprotection of the benzoyl group has also been exemplified, and the resulting product serves as a useful synthon for natural product syntheses.

Formation of a 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran containing 14-membered macrocycle by sequential olefin cross metathesis and a highly regiospecific hetero Diels-Alder reaction was observed in the reaction of a hydroxydienone derived from tartaric acid with Grubbs' second generation catalyst. It was found that the free alcohol in the hydroxyenone led to the macrocycle formation, while protection of the hydroxy group formed the ring closing metathesis product. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Polyaniline/titaniurn dioxide nanocomposites were prepared using alpha-dextrose as surfactant and ammonium persulphate as an oxidant. The PANI/TiO2 nanocomposite is characterized by FTIR, XRD and TEM. The FTIR spectra revel that the presence of characteristic peaks of benzenoid, qunoide rings and metal-oxygen stretching. The XRD studies show the monoclinic structure of the nanocomposites. The TEM study shows that the size of TiO2 is in the order of 9 nm where as the composite size is of the order of 13 nm and further it was observed that the TiO2 particles are intercalated to form a core shell of PANI. The maximum sensing response for LPG is found to be 90% for 30 wt.% of PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites at 400 ppm whereas for Benzene and Toluene it is negligibly small (<= 20%) and for the cyclohexane sensing response it is around 30% for different wt.%.

The experimental solubilities of the mixture of nitrophenol (m- and p-) isomers were determined at 308, 318 and 328 K over a pressure range of 10-17.55 MPa. Compared to the binary solubilities, the ternary solubilities of m-nitrophenol increased at 308, 318 and 328 K. The ternary solubilities of p-nitrophenol increased at 308 K, while the ternary solubilities decreased at lower pressures and increased at higher pressure at 318 and 328 K. The solubilities of the solid mixtures in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) were correlated with solution models by incorporating the non-idealities using activity coefficient based models. The Wilson and NRTL activity coefficient models were applied to determine the nature of the interactions between the molecules. The equation developed by using the NRTL model has three parameters and correlates mixture solubilities of solid solutes in terms of temperature and cosolute composition. The equation derived from the Wilson model contains five parameters and correlates solubilities in terms of temperature, density and cosolute composition. These two new equations developed in this work were used to correlate the solubilities of 25 binary solid mixtures including the current data. The average AARDs of the model equations derived using the NRTL and Wilson models for the solid mixtures were found to be 7% and 4%, respectively. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ion implantation experiments were carried out on amorphous (30 K) and crystalline (80 K) solid CO2 using both reactive (D+, H+) and non-reactive (He+) ions, simulating different irradiation environments on satellite and dust grain surfaces. Such ion irradiation synthesized several new species in the ice including ozone (O-3), carbon trioxide (CO3), and carbon monoxide (CO) the main dissociation product of carbon dioxide. The yield of these products was found to be strongly dependent upon the ion used for irradiation and the sample temperature. Ion implantation changes the chemical composition of the ice with recorded infrared spectra clearly showing the coexistence of D-3h and C-2v isomers of CO3, for the first time, in ion irradiated CO2 ice. A new naphthalene carbohydrazone based dizinc(II) complex has been synthesized and investigated to act as a highly selective fluorescence and visual sensor for a pyrophosphate ion with a quite low detection limit of 155 ppb; this has also been used to detect the pyrophosphate ion released from polymerase-chain-reaction.

Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) is a prerequisite for electrochemical sensor-based detection of parasite DNA and other diagnostic applications. To achieve this detection, an asymmetric polymerase chain reaction method was optimised. This method facilitates amplification of ssDNA from the human lymphatic filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti. This procedure produced ssDNA fragments of 188 bp in a single step when primer pairs (forward and reverse) were used at a 100:1 molar ratio in the presence of double-stranded template DNA. The ssDNA thus produced was suitable for immobilisation as probe onto the surface of an Indium tin oxide electrode and hybridisation in a system for sequence-specific electrochemical detection of W. bancrofti. The hybridisation of the ssDNA probe and target ssDNA led to considerable decreases in both the anodic and the cathodic currents of the system's redox couple compared with the unhybridised DNA and could be detected via cyclic voltammetry. This method is reproducible and avoids many of the difficulties encountered by conventional methods of filarial parasite DNA detection; thus, it has potential in xenomonitoring.

Gene expression in living systems is inherently stochastic, and tends to produce varying numbers of proteins over repeated cycles of transcription and translation. In this paper, an expression is derived for the steady-state protein number distribution starting from a two-stage kinetic model of the gene expression process involving p proteins and r mRNAs. The derivation is based on an exact path integral evaluation of the joint distribution, P(p, r, t), of p and r at time t, which can be expressed in terms of the coupled Langevin equations for p and r that represent the two-stage model in continuum form. The steady-state distribution of p alone, P(p), is obtained from P(p, r, t) (a bivariate Gaussian) by integrating out the r degrees of freedom and taking the limit t -> infinity. P(p) is found to be proportional to the product of a Gaussian and a complementary error function. It provides a generally satisfactory fit to simulation data on the same two-stage process when the translational efficiency (a measure of intrinsic noise levels in the system) is relatively low; it is less successful as a model of the data when the translational efficiency (and noise levels) are high.

A catalytic enantioselective sulfa-Michael/Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction cascade has been developed, taking advantage of phosphonate as an electrophilic activator and a traceless binding site. Using a chiral bifunctional urea derivative as the catalyst, a variety of aryl and heteroaryl substituted thiochromenes was obtained in excellent yield with a high level of enantioselectivity.

Phosphorylation of amines, alcohols, and sulfoximines are accomplished using molecular iodine as a catalyst and H2O2 as the sole oxidant under mild reaction conditions. This method provides an easy route for synthesizing a variety of phosphoramidates, phosphorus triesters and sulfoximine-derived phosphoramidates which are of biological importance.

This study presents the synthesis, characterization, and kinetics of steam reforming of methane and water gas shift (WGS) reactions over highly active and coke resistant Zr0.93Ru0.05O2-delta. The catalyst showed high activity at low temperatures for both the reactions. For WGS reaction, 99% conversion of CO with 100% H-2 selectivity was observed below 290 degrees C. The detailed kinetic studies including influence of gas phase product species, effect of temperature and catalyst loading on the reaction rates have been investigated. For the reforming reaction, the rate of reaction is first order in CH4 concentration and independent of CO and H2O concentration. This indicates that the adsorptive dissociation of CH4 is the rate determining step. The catalyst also showed excellent coke resistance even under a stoichiometric steam/carbon ratio. A lack of CO methanation activity is an important finding of present study and this is attributed to the ionic nature of Ru species. The associative mechanism involving the surface formate as an intermediate was used to correlate experimental data. Copyright (C) 2013, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The industrial production and commercial applications of titanium dioxide nanoparticles have increased considerably in recent times, which has increased the probability of environmental contamination with these agents and their adverse effects on living systems. This study was designed to assess the genotoxicity potential of TiO2 NPs at high exposure concentrations, its bio-uptake, and the oxidative stress it generated, a recognised cause of genotoxicity. Allium cepa root tips were treated with TiO2 NP dispersions at four different concentrations (12.5, 25, 50, 100 mu g/mL). A dose dependant decrease in the mitotic index (69 to 21) and an increase in the number of distinctive chromosomal aberrations were observed. Optical, fluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed chromosomal aberrations, including chromosomal breaks and sticky, multipolar, and laggard chromosomes, and micronucleus formation. The chromosomal aberrations and DNA damage were also validated by the comet assay. The bio-uptake of TiO2 in particulate form was the key cause of reactive oxygen species generation, which in turn was probably the cause of the DNA aberrations and genotoxicity observed in this study.
