Exploration of the visual system : Part 2. In vivo analysis methods : virtual-reality optomotor system, fundus examination and fluorescent angiography

The mouse has emerged as an animal model for many diseases. At IRO, we have used this animal to understand the development of many eye diseases and treatment of some of them. Precise evaluation of vision is a prerequisite for both these approaches. In this unit we describe three ways to measure vision: testing the optokinetic response, and evaluating the fundus by direct observation and by fluorescent angiography.

Gestió i desenvolupament d'un conjunt comprensiu de pràctiques per les assignatures de sistemes operatius

En aquest projecte s'ha desenvolupat un entorn repositori de pràctiques per a emmagatzemar i donar una eina de control del material docent que es disposa. El desenvolupament dels mòduls del sistema s'han realitzat després de contemplar els diferents rols que existeixen dintre dels membres del personal docent, sent aquest becaris o professors. Atès que el personal destinat a l'ensenyament està sotmès a un alt grau de rotacions aquest sistema intentarà ser un punt de trobada de totes les seves aportacions, ajudant així la tasca d'avaluació i explicació de les pràctiques. L'estudi d'un nou ventall de pràctiques ha permès conèixer un nou entorn de treball, que ofereix camps no tractats fins al moment a través de la implantació d'un sistema operatiu simulat per sobre del sistema operatiu Linux.

Una primera aproximació a la selecció d'un sistema automatitzat de biblioteques

Res no pot garantir que un procés de selecció d'un sistema automatitzat arribi a tenir èxit, però l'observació d'un conjunt de principis de sentit comú pot ajudar a assegurar l'èxit del resultat. El procés ha de centrar-se en el llarg termini i ha de tenir present el context institucional en el qual el sistema s'establirà. Els sistemes estan cada vegada més orientats als usuaris, i per tant el compromís dels usuaris en el procés de selecció és més i més important. Els components del procés de selecció poden ser previstos i combinats de moltes maneres diferents. El procediment usat per les Purdue University Libraries serveix per a il·lustrar una via en la realització pràctica d'un procés.

Integració de tècniques per a la comprovació eficient de restriccions d'integritat en la generació de programari per entorns web

Estudi elaborat a partir d’una estada al Politecnico de Milano, Itàlia, entre gener i juny del 2006. Un dels principals objectius de l’Enginyeria del Programari és automatitzar el màxim possible el procés de desenvolupament del programari, reduint costos mitjançant la generació automàtica del programari a partir de la seva especificació. Per assolir-ho, entre altres, cal resoldre el problema de la comprovació eficient de restriccions, que són una part fonamental de l’especificació del programari. Aquest és precisament l’àmbit en què s’està desenvolupant una tesi que presentarà un mètode que poden integrar totes les eines generadores de codi per tal d’assolir una implementació eficient de les restriccions d’integritat. En l’actual fase del projecte s’ha treballat per validar el mètode de la tesi, optimitzant-lo pel cas específic de les aplicacions web i estendre’l per poder tractar també aplicacions basades en workflows. Pel que fa a l’optimització del mètode per aplicacions web, s’han definit una sèrie de paràmetres que permeten configurar la implementació del mètode tenint en compte les necessitats específiques de rendiment de cada aplicació web en particular. Respecte als workflows (cada cop més populars i que s’usen com a definició d’alt nivell per a les aplicacions a desenvolupar) s’ha estudiat quins són els tipus de restriccions que impliquen i com després es pot aplicar el mètode de la tesi sobre aquestes restriccions per tal de generar de forma eficient també les aplicacions basades en workflows.

Influence de deux milieux séquentiels pour la culture d'embryons sur la production d'hormone gonadotrophine chorionique et de progestérone par des cellules JEG-3 et BeWo [Effects of different embryo development media on hCG and progesterone release by JEG-3 and BeWo cells]

Current in vitro fertilisation (IVF) practice requires synchronisation between the¦environment of cultured oocytes and embryos and the surroundings to what they would have¦been exposed to in vivo. Commercial, sequential media follow this requirement but their exact¦composition is not available. We have compared two widely used IVF culture media systems using¦the two choriocarcinoma cell lines JEG-3 and BeWo. The two hormones hCG and progesterone¦were determined in the culture supernatants as endpoints. In both cell lines, but in a more¦pronounced way in JEG-3, progesterone rather than hCG production was stimulated, and a¦higher hormone release was observed in the fertilisation than in the cleavage media. Differences¦between manufacturers were small and did not favour one system over the other. We conclude¦that both sequential media systems can be equally well used in current IVF laboratory practice.¦© 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

The identity type weak factorisation system

We show that the classifying category C(T)of a dependent type theory T with axioms for identity types admits a nontrivial weak factorisation system. After characterising this weak factorisation system explicitly, we relate it to the homotopy theory of groupoids.

System analysis of a Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand architecture: Kangaroo

Architectural design and deployment of Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand (P2PVoD) systems which support VCR functionalities is attracting the interest of an increasing number of research groups within the scientific community; especially due to the intrinsic characteristics of such systems and the benefits that peers could provide at reducing the server load. This work focuses on the performance analysis of a P2P-VoD system considering user behaviors obtained from real traces together with other synthetic user patterns. The experiments performed show that it is feasible to achieve a performance close to the best possible. Future work will consider monitoring the physical characteristics of the network in order to improve the design of different aspects of a VoD system.

The plasminogen system in microdissected colonic mucosa distant from an isolated adenoma.

In the colon, the urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), its receptor (uPAR), and plasminogen activator inhibitors, PAI-1 and PAI-2, are implicated in the transition from mucosa to adenoma and tumour progression. However, expression in the mucosa adjacent, or distant, to an adenoma has not yet been investigated. Three biopsies from mucosae adjacent (20 cm, ipsilateral) and distant (contralateral) to an isolated tubular adenoma were analysed in 14 patients and 8 controls. Laser microdissection isolated stromal and epithelial crypt components, and quantitative RT-PCR analyses of uPA, uPAR, PAI-1 and PAI-2 mRNA levels were performed. Among controls, no significant differences in the markers were noted. With left colon isolated tubular adenoma, uPA, uPAR, and PAI-2 mRNA levels were significantly increased in the adjacent mucosal stroma compared to epithelial crypt levels (p < 0.05). In right colon adenoma, the mRNA levels of these 3 molecular markers were significantly increased only in the adjacent mucosal stromal samples (p < 0.05). Isolated tubular adenoma in the colon increases significantly the mRNA levels of 3 proteolysis-associated molecular markers in the stromal, but not in the epithelial, components of adjacent mucosa. These results suggest the presence of regional and dynamic interactions in apparently non-involved mucosae.

Establishing an association between a peri-operative perfusion score system (PerfSCORE) and post-operative patient morbidity/mortality during CPB cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: To date, there is no quality assurance program that correlates patient outcome to perfusion service provided during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). A score was devised, incorporating objective parameters that would reflect the likelihood to influence patient outcome. The purpose was to create a new method for evaluating the quality of care the perfusionist provides during CPB procedures and to deduce whether it predicts patient morbidity and mortality. METHODS: We analysed 295 consecutive elective patients. We chose 10 parameters: fluid balance, blood transfused, Hct, ACT, PaO2, PaCO2, pH, BE, potassium and CPB time. Distribution analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilcoxon test. This made up the PerfSCORE and we tried to find a correlation to mortality rate, patient stay in the ICU and length of mechanical ventilation. Univariate analysis (UA) using linear regression was established for each parameter. Statistical significance was established when p < 0.05. Multivariate analysis (MA) was performed with the same parameters. RESULTS: The mean age was 63.8 +/- 12.6 years with 70% males. There were 180 CABG, 88 valves, and 27 combined CABG/valve procedures. The PerfSCORE of 6.6 +/- 2.4 (0-20), mortality of 2.7% (8/295), CPB time 100 +/- 41 min (19-313), ICU stay 52 +/- 62 hrs (7-564) and mechanical ventilation of 10.5 +/- 14.8 hrs (0-564) was calculated. CPB time, fluid balance, PaO2, PerfSCORE and blood transfused were significantly correlated to mortality (UA, p < 0.05). Also, CPB time, blood transfused and PaO2 were parameters predicting mortality (MA, p < 0.01). Only pH was significantly correlated for predicting ICU stay (UA). Ultrafiltration (UF) and CPB time were significantly correlated (UA, p < 0.01) while UF (p < 0.05) was the only parameter predicting mechanical ventilation duration (MA). CONCLUSIONS: CPB time, blood transfused and PaO2 are independent risk factors of mortality. Fluid balance, blood transfusion, PaO2, PerfSCORE and CPB time are independent parameters for predicting morbidity. PerfSCORE is a quality of perfusion measure that objectively quantifies perfusion performance.

Disseny d'un sistema HW/SW de control remot amb dispositius FPGA

El projecte que es presenta a continuació, té com a objectiu implementar un sistema HW/SW encastat en una FPGA, capaç d’executar funcions de control remot per infraroig en plataformes de televisió flexibles de Sony Corp. El disseny obtingut, s’incorporarà a un sistema més ampli de verificació i test de circuits impresos, dins del marc de producció SMD. La finalitat d’aquest projecte, és la realització d’un sistema flexible per a la implementació de comandaments de comunicació per infraroig amb circuits impresos. Prèviament, s’ha estudiat els conceptes bàsics referents a la implementació de sistemes amb FPGAs, la seva metodologia de desenvolupament i les principals característiques de la seva arquitectura. Com a especificacions, s’ha utilitzat l’estàndard de control remot per infraroig de Sony Corp SIRCS (Sony Infrared remote control system).

Avaluació i definició del desplegament de programari a un grup empresarial: procés de migració d'un entorn corporatiu

Aprofitant una migració de l’entorn corporatiu d’un gran grup empresarial, es pren la decisió de canviar el sistema de desplegament de programari. Aquest anàlisi compren l’estudi i la definició de l’empaquetat d’aplicacions, la posterior distribució a la xarxa corporativa i finalment la instal·lació a les màquines.

Endocrine response and perceived stress test during an experimental challenge task in adult survivors of a childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: Although long-term implications of cancer in childhood or adolescence with regard to medical conditions are well documented, the impact on mental health and on response to stress, which may be an indicator of psychological vulnerability, is not yet well understood. In this study, psychological and physiological responses to stress were examined.¦PROCEDURE: Fifty-three participants aged 18-39 years (n = 25 survivors of childhood or adolescence cancer, n = 28 controls) underwent an experimental stress test, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Participants were asked to provide repeated evaluations of perceived stress on visual-analogical scales and blood samples were collected before and after the TSST to measure plasma cortisol.¦RESULTS: The psychological perception of stress was not different between the two groups. However, the cancer survivors group showed a higher global plasma cortisol level as well as higher amplitude in the response to the TSST. The global cortisol level in cancer survivors was increased when depression symptoms were present. The subjective perception of stress and the plasma cortisol levels were only marginally correlated in both groups.¦CONCLUSIONS: It is suggested that the exposure to a life-threatening experience in childhood/adolescence increases the endocrine response to stress, and that the presence of depressive symptoms is associated with an elevation of plasma cortisol levels. A better knowledge of these mechanisms is important given that the dysregulations of the stress responses may cause psychological vulnerability. Disseny del servidor de control d'un sistema de vídeo sota demanda

El treball realitzat dóna una visió global sobre els sistemes de vídeo sota demanda i la problemàtica associada al seu desenvolupament. Es mostra quines solucions s'han adoptat per abordar aquesta problemàtica a l'hora de dissenyar un sistema de VoD i, en particular, el treball se centra en l'anàlisi i desenvolupament del corresponent servidor de control.
