The Health Behavior in School-aged Children is a cross-national study collecting data on social and health indicators on adolescents in 43 countries. The study provides comparable data on health behaviors and health outcomes through the use of a common protocol, which have been a back bone of the study sine its initiation in 1983. Recent years, researchers within the study have noticed a questionable comparability on the widely used item on self-rated health. One of the four response categories to the item "Would you say your health is….?" showed particular variation, as the response category "Fair" varied from 20 % in Latvia and Moldova to 3-4 % in Bulgaria and Macedonia. A qualitative mini-survey of the back-translations showed that the response category "Fair" had a negative slant in 25 countries, a positive slant in 10 countries and was considered neutral in 9 countries. This finding indicates that there are what may be called semantic issues affecting comparability in international studies, since the same original word (in an English original) is interpreted differently across countries and cultures. The paper test and discuss a few possible explanations to this, however, only leaving to future studies to hold a cautious approach to international comparisons if working with the self-rated health item with four response categories.

IntroductionWe compared feces culturing in charcoal or vermiculite to obtain Strongyloides venezuelensis larvae.MethodsFeces (5g) from infected rats was mixed with vermiculite (10g) or coal (10g) in plastic cups and incubated at 28°C for 48h. Larvae were recovered using Baermann-Moraes method.ResultsSignificantly higher number of positive larval cultures were recovered from vermiculite than from charcoal (15/17 and 4/17, respectively; p < 0.001; 990.6 ± 307.5 and 215 ± 78.1 larvae, p = 0.027).ConclusionsVermiculite yields more larvae and provides cleaner pellets, improving larvae identification and facilitating their use for other purposes.

The purpose of the paper is to investigate the effectiveness of supply chain management (SCM) practices to increase a company’s performance based on a cross-border and cross-sector analysis. The paper follows a comparative case study approach which was achieved by interviewing supply chain management experts of three companies operating in different industries and positions in a supply chain. Practices that were mutually applied by the firms and their contribution to achieve quality, economic, cost, and time advantages were analyzed. The paper revealed practices, which contribute the most to increase specific performance areas.

The capacity to use geologic materials (soil and rock) that are available in the surrounding environment is inherent to the human civilization and has contributed to the evolution of societies throughout the course of history. The use of these materials in the construction of structures such as houses, roads, railways or dams, stirred the improvement of socioeconomic and environmental conditions. Several reports of structural problems on embankments can be found throughout history. A considerable number of those registers can be linked to inadequate compaction, demonstrating the importance of guaranteeing a suitable quality of soil compaction. Various methodologies and specifications of compaction quality control on site of earthworks, based on the fill moisture content and dry unit weight, were developed during the 20th century. Two widely known methodologies are the conventional and nuclear techniques. The conventional methods are based on the use of the field sand cone test (or similar) and sampling of material for laboratory-based testing to evaluate the fill dry unit weight and water content. The nuclear techniques measure both parameters in the field using a nuclear density gauge. A topic under discussion in the geotechnical community, namely in Portugal, is the comparison between the accuracy of the nuclear gauge and sand cone test results for assessing the compaction and density ratio of earth fills, particularly for dams. The main purpose of this dissertation is to compare both of them. The data used were acquired during the compaction quality control operations at the Coutada/Tamujais dam trial embankment and core construction. This is a 25 m high earth dam located in Vila Velha de Rodão, Portugal. To analyse the spatial distribution of the compaction parameters (water content and compaction ratio), a 3D model was also developed. The main results achieved are discussed and finally some considerations are put forward on the suitability of both techniques to ensure fill compaction quality and on additional research to complement the conclusions obtained.

Este trabalho procura verificar qual aplicação dos SIM - Sistemas de Informação de Marketing e do Geomarketing (através do recurso aos Sistemas de Informação Geográfica) nos vários níveis estratégicos em organizações no Brasil, mais precisamente na cidade de São Paulo. Outro objectivo é descortinar quais as principais vantagens reconhecidas pelas organizações no que toca à utilização do Geomarketing para apoio à tomada de decisão. São apresentadas várias definições para proporcionar um claro entendimento do tema, e destacam-se as seis actividades que segundo a literatura consultada concentram a maioria das aplicações do Geomarketing: segmentação do mercado, análise do potencial do mercado, organização e avaliação da força de vendas, localização do negócio, roteirização e programação de veículos, e, promoção de marketing. Em cada uma das actividades citadas, é feita referência a um case brasileiro para que o leitor possa familiarizar-se com o panorama deste país no que concerne à utilização do Geomarketing. Para alcançar os referidos objectivos, além de uma cuidada revisão bibliográfica, foi também desenhada uma pesquisa qualitativa que levou em conta o Modelo Conceitual de Goñi (2008) que integra os SIM - Sistemas de Informação de Marketing e os vários níveis estratégicos e apresenta as suas diferentes aplicações em cada um desses níveis: operacional, táctico e estratégico. O referido modelo foi já aplicado no México em 30 empresas de grande e médio porte, pelo que se buscou replicar essa pesquisa no Brasil, através de entrevistas em profundidade, numa amostra de 10 organizações de grande porte pertencentes a dois segmentos distintos (Segmento Comércio e Segmento Educação). Este estudo revelou que, tal como nas empresas mexicanas, os gestores e CEOs brasileiros, utilizam e reconhecem a importância dos Sistemas de Informação de Marketing, aos quais recorrem, na maioria das vezes, em todos os níveis estratégicos. O grau de utilização dos vários tipos de informações de marketing elencados no Modelo Conceitual de Goñi (49 tipos de informação de marketing diferentes) é superior nas organizações brasileiras pois a maioria afirmou recorrer à sua totalidade. Estas informações podem também ser fornecidas por vários SIM e utilizadas em vários níveis estratégicos, não existindo uma regra relativamente ao sistema de output da informação, ou layer estratégica em que é utilizada. O Segmento Comércio, composto essencialmente por empresas do ramo supermercadista recorre ao Geomarketing em 60% das actividades pesquisadas, já o Segmento Educação, composto por instituições de ensino superior, utiliza o Geomarketing em 49% das suas acções. Ambos os segmentos identificaram diversas iv vantagens na prática do Geomarketing como a possibilidade de cruzamento de várias variáveis em simultâneo, a disposição dessa informação em mapas ou o carácter intuitivo das interfaces gráficas dos softwares SIG. Tudo isso permite encontrar padrões nos dados que de outra forma não seriam facilmente identificados, uma maior rapidez e facilidade na análise dos dados, melhor percepção da informação, possibilidade de criação de novos indicadores, entre outros. Estas vantagens resultam numa tomada de decisão mais rápida e assertiva.

ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION:While no single factor is sufficient to guarantee the success of influenza vaccine programs, knowledge of the levels of immunity in local populations is critical. Here, we analyzed influenza immunity in a population from Southern Brazil, a region with weather conditions that are distinct from those in the rest of country, where influenza infections are endemic, and where greater than 50% of the population is vaccinated annually.METHODS:Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from 40 individuals. Of these, 20 had received the H1N1 vaccine, while the remaining 20 were unvaccinated against the disease. Cells were stimulated in vitro with the trivalent post-pandemic influenza vaccine or with conserved major histocompatibility complex I (MHC I) peptides derived from hemagglutinin and neuraminidase. Cell viability was then analyzed by [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide)]-based colorimetric assay (MTT), and culture supernatants were assayed for helper T type 1 (Th1) and Th2-specific cytokine levels.RESULTS:Peripheral blood lymphocytes from vaccinated, but not unvaccinated, individuals exhibited significant proliferation in vitro in the presence of a cognate influenza antigen. After culturing with vaccine antigens, cells from vaccinated individuals produced similar levels of interleukin (IL)-10 and interferon (IFN)-γ, while those from unvaccinated individuals produced higher levels of IFN-γ than of IL-10.CONCLUSIONS:Our data indicate that peripheral blood lymphocytes from vaccinated individuals are stimulated upon encountering a cognate antigen, but did not support the hypothesis that cross-reactive responses related to previous infections can ameliorate the immune response. Moreover, monitoring IL-10 production in vaccinated individuals could comprise a valuable tool for predicting disease evolution.

O aparecimento de soluções de software baseadas na Cloud vieram democratizar o acesso a aplicações de suporte à actividade empresarial, permitindo a micro e pequenas empresas aceder a ferramentas que outrora apenas as grandes empresas poderiam financiar, dada a introdução de novas formas de pagamento mensais com base em contratos flexíveis, acesso via internet e ausência de instalação de hardware específico ou compra de licenças por utilizador – a verdadeira utilização de software como um serviço, vulgo SaaS (Software as a Service). As aplicações de tipo SaaS aportam inúmeros benefícios para as empresas e mesmo vantagens competitivas importantes, estando disponíveis soluções em diversas áreas, nomeadamente para a Gestão de Projectos, como ferramentas de CRM (Customer Relationship Management) e CMS (Content Management System), entre outros. Assim, as empresas de Marketing e Comunicação, caso da empresa em que se centra este Projecto, têm hoje em dia acesso a um conjunto de aplicações SaaS, que pelo seu custo acessível e fácil acesso online, permitem às empresas mais pequenas serem rapidamente tão competitivas quanto as maiores, por norma com processos mais pesados e tradicionais. Adicionalmente, assistimos também ao fenómeno da consumerização das TI, em que os consumidores passam a querer ter o mesmo tipo de User Experience (UX) de que usufruem na utilização de aplicações fora do seu trabalho, aplicadas à vida empresarial. Este Projecto argumenta que a Usabilidade deve ser um dos elementos chave para a selecção correcta de uma aplicação online de Gestão de Projectos (do tipo SaaS), algo que deveria ser facilitado pela aplicação de uma metodologia de teste da Usabilidade, disponível numa plataforma online de acesso livre. A metodologia deverá ser eficaz e passível de ser utilizada por colaboradores de uma micro ou pequena empresa, apoiando o seu processo decisório de investimento, sendo eles especialistas ou não na matéria. A metodologia proposta neste projecto exploratório pressupõe uma complementaridade entre a avaliação Heurística de Usabilidade pelo método de Nielsen e o Método de Purdue - Purdue Usability Testing Questionnaire (PUTQ).

Participation in intensive sports activities leads to muscular specializations that may generate alterations in involved articular forces and cause static (posture) and dynamic changes (alterations of articular stability, coordination, etc.). Prevention of injury requires specific functional muscular evaluation in all athletes and for any kind of sport. OBJECTIVE: To dynamically evaluate, through isokinetic tests, the peak torque, total work, and average power of the knee flexor and extensor muscles of jumper and runner athletes and compare them to those of a non-athletic population, evaluating dominance and balance between agonistic and antagonistic muscle groups. RESULTS: In the non-athlete group, we noted a higher asymmetry between the dominant and nondominant members. The jumpers had the highest values of the evaluated parameters of all groups, whereas parameters for the runners were intermediate between non-athletes and jumpers.

PURPOSE: This study aims to characterize the peri-intraventricular hemorrhages in the neonatal period in very low birth weight newborns in 2 institutions that provide neonatal tertiary assistance. METHOD: This was a comparative and observational study in 2 neonatal intensive care units, the Maternity Hospital of Campinas and the "Centro de Atenção Integrada à Saúde da Mulher" of the State University of Campinas, from December 01, 1998 to November 30, 1999. We examined 187 newborns for peri-intraventricular hemorrhages, using transfontanel ultrasound (76 and 11 respectively at the first and second unit), and classified them into 4 grades. We observed their gender, intrauterine growth, weight, and gestational age at birth. RESULTS: We diagnosed 34 cases of peri-intraventricular hemorrhages (13 and 21, respectively), and both groups differed as to the birth weight and the adequacy of weight to the gestational age at birth. There was no difference in the prevalence or extent of peri-intraventricular hemorrhages among cases. There was a statistically significant occurrence of lower birth weight at gestational ages of less than 30 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of peri-intraventricular hemorrhages in our study was compared to that reported in the world literature. Although the cases of the second institution had a smaller mean birth weight, the prevalence of peri-intraventricular hemorrhages was similar to that at the first institution, probably because in the first one, 69% of the gestational ages of the neonates with hemorrhage were less than 30 weeks as compared to 48% in the second one. We stress the importance of the ultrasonographic method for diagnosing peri-intraventricular hemorrhages in very low birth weight newborns.

The paper studies the relationship between four differently rated bank’s financial profile and their standalone credit rating issued by Moody’s. The comparative analysis shows an example that despite their pricing power and geographical coverage, larger banks do not necessarily have better credit ratings. Instead, business model and risk appetite seem to be the defining factors of banks’ vulnerability to shocks, such as the Spanish real estate crisis. The risk-return relationship is also identified in the banks’ fundamentals meaning that while expansionary strategy in riskier asset classes enhances margins, it also potentially distorts the credit risk profile.
